Colombian Government selects Vitalpass, Co-created by Auna Ideas and Built on Algorand Blockchain, as the Nation’s Official Digital Vaccination Passport

This blockchain-based certificate is free and secure, as it leverages a technological process highly reliable for user data accuracy and privacy.

Vitalpass will record and certify the vaccination status of Colombian citizens and connect with other vaccination passports globally.

BOGOTA, Colombia, Sept. 11, 2021 — Vitalpass, the COVID-19 digital vaccination passport co-created by Auna Ideas Foundation and Koibanx and developed leveraging Algorand’s blockchain, has been chosen by the Colombian government as its official immunization certificate. Colombia is the first country in Latin America to adopt this technology, joining the ranks of others already doing this, including Singapore, Japan, South Korea and New York City .

This initiative has been made possible thanks to Auna’s commitment to vaccination in Colombia and Peru, and through partnerships with local and national governments. A milestone in Colombia and Latin America, Vitalpass has been co-designed by the Innovation and HealthTech division of Auna Ideas as part of their commitment to provide comprehensive health solutions. This digital vaccination passport is free and cannot be falsified, since it creates a permanent and inalterable record on Algorand Blockchain, which is a public, decentralized network that was purpose-built for global applications that can scale to mass adoption.

Vitalpass was developed with the technological support of Koibanx, a LATAM company with more than 6 years of experience implementing blockchain-based asset tokenization and transactional solutions for the financial and government sectors.

"The use of blockchain technology makes this digital passport one of the safest and most reliable tools to guarantee the transparent process of vaccination in Colombia, because the information cannot be changed, erased or manipulated, thus ensuring the validity of the certificate against cases of forgery, double vaccination, or others," said Dr. Andrés Vásquez, Director of Biomedical Innovation and Health-Tech at Auna Ideas.

Auna Ideas Foundation has granted the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Colombia free and perpetual rights to deploy VitalPass as the country’s tool to certify its citizens’ COVID-19 vaccination before any national or international agency. Similar agreements are expected to be signed with other governments in Latin America.

Vitalpass is part of the Commontrust Network, where multiple organizations worldwide joined efforts to give patients digital access to their health data using open, interoperable and verifiable standards. In addition, negotiations are underway to connect with GreenPass, the European Union’s COVID-19 digital immunization certification system.

With this initiative, Auna, through the Auna Ideas Foundation, reaffirms its commitment to fight COVID-19 and to leverage innovation to transform the healthcare experience of an increasing number of families in Latin America.

CGTN: China leads global vaccine cooperation as BRICS enters the 15th year

BEIJING, Sept. 11, 2021 — Entering its 15th year, the emerging-market bloc BRICS that groups Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa once again demonstrated that the member states can always come together to build up new consensus for more dynamic cooperation.

Under the theme of "Intra-BRICS cooperation for continuity, consolidation and consensus," the 13th summit via video link on Thursday comes at a time when the world is facing a pandemic, an increasingly uneven global economic recovery, as well as a torrent of rising non-conventional global security challenges.

China, which has continued to inject impetus into BRICS cooperation and will take over the BRICS chairmanship in 2022, set a good example for international vaccine cooperation at Thursday’s summit by announcing to donate 100 million more COVID-19 vaccines to developing countries.

BRICS to fight against the pandemic

In the face of the pandemic, BRICS countries have actively maintained information exchange and cooperation and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who attended and delivered a speech at the BRICS summit for the ninth consecutive year, restressed the significance of vaccine cooperation.

Noting that China has promised to provide 2 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses to the world throughout this year and offer $100 million to COVAX, Xi called on the BRICS members to contribute to promoting fair and equitable distribution of vaccines worldwide.

Since Xi announced making China’s COVID-19 vaccines a public good at the 73rd session of the World Health Assembly last May, the country has delivered about 800 million vaccine doses to more than 100 nations as of August. They are mostly developing countries, according to data from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

He also highlighted the practical cooperation in joint vaccine research and development, joint production and mutual recognition of COVID-19 vaccinations, as well as launching the BRICS Vaccine Research and Development Center online as soon as possible.

In May, China announced the establishment of a national center as part of the center. Boosting the vaccine R&D among BRICS nations, the center reinforces cooperation on R&D and the trial of the vaccines, factory construction, and cooperation on vaccine production, authorization and recognition among the five countries.

BRICS to promote common development in economy

Economic and trade cooperation is one of the major topics for BRICS countries. According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, BRICS countries account for 42 percent of the world’s population, 24 percent of the global economy, 18 percent of global trade in goods, 13 percent of global trade in services and 25 percent of global foreign investment.

In this regard, China proposed to host a high-level BRICS meeting on climate change and a BRICS forum on big data for sustainable development.

Xi also stressed the significance of the New Development Bank and the BRICS Partnership on the New Industrial Revolution innovation center.

The center was launched in Xiamen in December last year. At the center’s inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, 28 projects with a total investment of over 13.4 billion yuan (about 2.07 billion U.S. dollars) were inked by BRICS enterprises.

BRICS to uphold true multilateralism, justice and fairness

Regional peace and stability, biosecurity and counter-terrorism and cyber security have also been the keywords in BRICS cooperation during recent years.

"We need to make good use of BRICS mechanisms such as the meeting of foreign ministers and the meeting of high representatives for security, better coordinate our position on major international and regional issues, and send out an even bigger, collective voice of BRICS countries," Xi said at the summit.

At the BRICS Meeting of National Security Advisors held last month, the member countries reached the counter-terrorism action plan, and in July, they agreed to contribute more to the international fight against terrorism at the 6th virtual meeting of the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group.

A declaration was adopted at the meeting, reiterating the BRICS commitment to enhancing cooperation under political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

The Exclusive Partnership between HungryPanda and Caocao Mobility Paris

The surge in the number of students also brings new problems for the start of the school season. Many of the new students are leaving the country for the first time and coming to France to study. But with the impact of the pandemic, everything is much more complicated than before. In addition to preparing a ton of administrative documents, Chinese students have to get tested, get vaccinated, and keep an eye on the ever-changing entry policies.

After solving all those questions and landing in Paris, students face another problem, which is transport. Most Chinese would carry at least two big suitcases, preventing them to transfer by train, metro or bus. The awaiting taxi also has conflicting fame for their prices for foreigners.

HungryPanda, the leading Asian food delivery company, partners with Caocao Mobility Paris to provide the airport transfer service with a comfortable and safe experience. The airport transfer service will last to 25 September as the first step of the cooperation between these two companies. All Caocao cars prepare drivers who can speak Mandarin for more convenient communication. All drivers have been vaccinated and provide an ultimate experience for Chinese customers.

Caocao Mobility Paris is a new mobility platform offering elegant and spacious vehicles in Paris and its region, accessible to people with reduced mobility and eco-friendly. The company is a French start-up supported by the automotive group Geely and have served more than 30 million passengers.

Through the airport transfer service, HungryPanda aims to provide a one-stop service for overseas Chinese, from transport to food delivery. The exclusive partnership is also a whole new attempt for HungryPanda to expand with more business models. HungryPanda is dedicated to seeking new opportunities to provide premium lifestyle services for overseas Chinese, and establishing a leading platform to support the development of overseas Chinese communities.

Evo successfully responds to e-commerce growth with Kӧrber and Locus Robotics

Sports retailer increases picking speed by 157% by deploying AMRs in just 53 days

HAMBURG, Germany and WILMINGTON, Mass., Sept. 10, 2021 — Körber and long-time strategic partner Locus Robotics, the global leader in warehouse robotics, together are enabling evo to dramatically improve ecommerce order fulfillment and productivity by deploying Locus’s autonomous mobile robot (AMR) solution alongside Kӧrber’s warehouse management system (WMS).

A LocusBot assisting one of evo's warehouse workers.
A LocusBot assisting one of evo’s warehouse workers.

"The automation solution from Locus Robotics and Körber was one of the first technologies that I have seen come into the warehouse where the team was excited from the get-go," said Chris Christiansen, Outbound Manager, evo. "The improvement of speed and efficiency is impressive, allowing us to boost productivity and efficiency ahead of the 2020 holiday season while keeping our workers safe amid COVID-19 concerns. We are also well equipped with the flexibility to scale up and down on a Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) principle."

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, evo faced serious challenges navigating rapid growth in demand at their warehouse as well as peak seasons – pushing the company to the limits of its capacity. Due to hard-to-find temporary and seasonal workers, as well as a desire for improved productivity in its fulfillment operations, evo specifically struggled to keep up with e-commerce orders. Additionally, evo had to consider COVID-related safety and social distancing guidelines while designing their work processes.

evo turned to Körber, their trusted supply chain partner since 2014. Körber had already delivered the warehouse management system (WMS) and would now provide a multi-bot warehouse automation solution with Locus that allowed the required flexibility and efficiency.

Körber and Locus implemented the AMR solution in just 53 days. This allowed evo to be ready to meet and exceed growing order volumes with zero downtime or disruption. The project started with ten robots that move independently through the warehouse, collaboratively supporting pickers by eliminating unproductive walking time and physical labor. Further, the visual imaging of the product to be picked helped accelerate pick rates.  To support peak season, evo added seven additional robots for expected higher volumes at the facility, using Locus’s innovative RaaS model. This is managed via Kӧrber’s WMS.

The deployment has resulted in a significant increase to workers’ picking speeds up from an average of 35 units per hour (UPH) with manual carts to 90 UPH with LocusBots. Some workers topped 125 UPH, an increase of more than 157 percent.

Rick Faulk, Chief Executive Officer, Locus Robotics, adds: "We are proud to partner with Körber to deploy our powerful and efficient multi-bot solution to support evo’s warehouse operations. Our purpose-built robotics solution has seamlessly addressed the needs of evo’s high-growth warehouse, now and into the future. We look forward to continuing to work with them to drive operational efficiencies and growth."

"The supply chain industry is dealing with multiple challenges, especially in times of disruption," says Bill Ryan, CEO Software North America, Körber Business Area Supply Chain. "In today’s world with increasing complexity, we’re looking to technology to solve these problems. With the new AMR solution which we were able to deploy with our partner in record time, evo is able to increase performance while providing a safe and smart working environment for the staff."

China.org.cn: Regulating algorithms to protect your interests

BEIJING, Sept. 10, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on China’s recent draft regulations on algorithm recommendation:

Here are some scenarios that most people are familiar with: Searching for products on a shopping app leads to relevant ads "magically appearing" on your social media. Or when watching short videos on your phone, you may find that they are just to your taste and you just cannot stop.

The recommendation algorithms that can "read your mind" actually expose acute problems such as privacy leaks and data security. In response, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) released the draft Regulations on the Management of Internet Information Service Recommendation Algorithms to solicit opinions from the public. The regulations include 30 points, covering rules such as those to protect minors and provide users the option to turn off recommendation services.

Nowadays, science and technology provides people with an unprecedented wealth of information and experiences. However, its unchecked and chaotic development could cause great harm. A majority of recommendations are harmless enough. But people often hear news about teenagers, who lack a mature worldview and outlook on life and values, getting injured while imitating what they see in popular short videos. If content containing smoking and drinking, violence, and distorted values are repeatedly recommended, then copied by minors, it will also result in particularly adverse consequences.

Interest-based recommendation algorithms can easily lead to users being "cocooned" and limiting their access to other information. Therefore, it’s vital to give users more choice. Lots of recommendation algorithms can induce users with a variety of content in diverse forms, ranging from product advertisements to material influencing people’s political opinions. For instance, Facebook and Google were previously accused of intensifying political polarization. If algorithms are used for improper competition, what people see and think will become presumptions of the "manipulators", which runs counter to the ideals of fairness and justice.

Nowadays, information and data security affect every aspect of everyday lives and are essential to everyone. Thus, it’s imperative that these algorithms are regulated, as is the case in every other country. On Sept. 1, the Data Security Law officially came into effect in China, aiming to better safeguard data security as well as the legal rights and interests of citizens and organizations.

In the internet age, privacy and data security issues know no borders, and so China has taken steps to explore the protection of data security. There are enough reasons to believe that a safer and more objective cyberspace can be created through the consultation and cooperation between China and the rest of the world.

This is a preeminent research event to discuss and disseminate advancements in the field of natural language generation (NLG). The conference will be hosted in Aberdeen, Scotland from 20 to 24 September. Participants will present their research in virtual meetings.

In addition to world-class research presentations, this year’s conference will include workshops, tutorials, talks by invited experts, and a discussion panel: What users want from real-world NLG. The panel discussion will be led by academics currently working in industry on machine learning, NLG, and cognitive AI assistants.

While natural language generation has been established for more than 30 years, the adoption curve for NLG has accelerated. It is now seen as a foundational technology for business by analyst firms such as Gartner, who have recently recognized NLG as a core capability.

The INLG conference, which got its start in the late 1980s, has grown from being a niche academic group to a much grander scope academically and commercially.

Arria CEO Sharon Daniels said, "At Arria, we’re fortunate to have our chief scientists who keep us connected regularly to the global NLG community and its work. But this annual conference allows us to engage directly with academics on the forefront of exciting research, exploration, and innovation. We wouldn’t miss the chance to take part in INLG 2021."

Arria and its people have enjoyed being involved in INLG since the beginning. The company has sponsored the conference numerous times in the past decade, while Arria’s founders have been regular attendees for much longer.

Arria CPO Ross Turner said: "It’s exciting to see the cutting-edge research at an event such as this, and both an honour and a privilege to be able to participate. As a company building NLG products, it’s essential to keep in close contact with the wider research community. There is tremendous insight to be gained from these gatherings. It’s important for us as a company to stay in touch and keep up with what everyone is working on in order to help move the field of natural language generation forward."

For the Generation Challenges part of the conference, in which participants conduct research to answer predetermined questions regarding evaluation of NLG systems, Professor Reiter will present a paper he wrote with Craig Thomson titled Generation Challenges: Results of the Accuracy Evaluation of Shared Tasks. Reiter and Thomson will announce the results of their shared task, which took place between April and July.

You can register for the conference on the conference website.

vivo Announces the X70 Series with Even Better Cameras

Here is a trivia; which manufacturer brought the under-display fingerprint sensor technology to the masses? Here is another; which manufacturer brought the gimbal technology into smartphones? If you know your tech, you will quickly know that the answer to both question is vivo.

While Samsung jumped on the bandwagon of making under-display fingerprint sensors a thing, they were not the first who went to market with it. To be fair, the power button integrated fingerprint sensor was not a Samsung-first technology too. That was Sony.

vivo though is a manufacturer that is plenty known for its innovations for the smartphone industry. They were one of the earliest adopters in pop-up front-facing cameras too, if you have not known yet. They like introducing their new innovations in their flagships too.

The X70 series that was just announced though, may not seem like they are about pushing new technologies. Rather, they are pushing the current boundaries of current technologies for flagship devices. In the grander scheme of things, vivo announced three new devices in the X70 series – the vivo X70, X70 Pro, and the X70 Pro+.

We have to start with the Zeiss camera, because we just have to. It will still be the biggest draw for the vivo flagship class. The vivo X70 Pro+ is also the flagship of flagships for vivo. That also means you get an unparalleled Zeiss camera experience.

Fronting the camera array is a 50-Megapixel shooter. Alongside the main sensor is a gimbal-stabilised 48-Megapixel ultra-wide sensor that is becoming a staple for smartphone cameras. You also get a 12-Megapixel portrait lens and an 8-Megapixel periscope telephoto. Zeiss also made some effort in making the cameras extra special here with SLR-grade glass lenses for the main camera. Of course, the rest of the sensors gets Zeiss optics and Zeiss T* coating.

Additionally, vivo recently developed its own imaging chip they call the V1 imaging chip. The V1 chip is technically a completely separate AI processor just for the vivo X70 Pro+’s camera array that is supposed to perform better in reducing noise and in low-light videos. A separate imaging chip also means that the vivo X70 Pro+ can deal with photos and videos better.

Just special cameras do not make a flagship device though. It has to come with flagship class processor too. That special processor is Qualcomm’s latest and most powerful Snapdragon ever. The vivo X70 Pro+ is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ System on a Chip (SoC), the same one you will find on the ASUS ROG Phone 5S. because it does not have to handle its camera’s operations, the one of the vivo X70 Pro+ is freed to focus on other SoC demanding jobs like gaming even.

To match the power of the SoC, you get ample 12GB of RAM to deal with any tasks you can throw at the vivo X70 Pro+ simultaneously. 512GB of storage should also be ample enough to house all the high-resolution photos and videos from the cameras. You can record videos at 8K resolution, by the way.

Covering a large 4,500mAh battery alongside all the powerful internals is an expansive 6.78-inch AMOLED display. It offers WQHD 1,440p resolution that matches the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. At up to 120Hz in refresh rate and 240Hz in sampling rate, you are not going to be wanting for more in a modern flagship. The display is interrupted by a single punch hole on top of its display though. The punch hole houses a 32-Megapixel sensor for great looking selfie cameras.

The Funtouch OS 12 Android 11 device should be able to last you an entire day and more with the 4,500mAh battery. If not, you can fully charge the device within two hours with 55W charging via USB Type-C. If you prefer the convenience of wireless charging, it charges at 50W too. Of course, for an extra peace of mind, the entire package is IP68 certified.

Sitting below the sophisticated X70 Pro+ is the X70 Pro that also comes with quad camera set-up. You may not be getting the same sophisticated lens treatment from the X70 Pro+, nor the dedicated V1 imaging chip, but you are still getting a capable smartphone for photography when you need it. You still have a 50-Megapixel main sensor that is flanked by a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. There is also a 12-megapixel portrait sensor and another 8-Megapixel telephoto sensor you can work with for various shoot conditions. The front-facing camera is still a 32-Megapixel unit as well.

It is a smaller device compared to its more premium brother. The display only measures in at 6.56-inch, which is still nowhere near small. The AMOLED display only features Full HD+ in resolution though. You still get up to 120Hz in refresh rate and 240Hz sampling rate when you need it.

You find more differences internally too starting with a battery that is a smidge smaller than the X70 Pro+. You get a 4,450mAh unit powering up a potent MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC. You can still opt for a 12GB RAM and 512GB storage combination if you really want with the X70 Pro. There is no wireless charging option here, but you can charge the X70 Pro at 44W via its USB Type-C.

Then there is the Vanilla, Plain Jane X70. It is the least powerful variant of the vivo flagship series. It is still no slouch though.

You get one less lens compared to its more premium brothers. Instead of the 50-Megapixel, you have a 40-Megapixel shooter at hand. That is also supported by a 12-Megapixel ultra-wide shooter and a 12-Megapixel telephoto sensor. Those are still very good camera set-up in the modern smartphone market though.

You get the same display that you find on the X70 Pro too at 6.56-inch. Underneath the display is the same MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC that is the beating heart of the X70. You will not be able to opt for a 512GB storage though. At the same time you get a slightly smaller battery too at 4,400mAh. The smaller battery should not affect its battery life performance though. You can still charge it at 44W as well.

Availability

For now, the device has only launched in China. We can safely confirm though that the vivo X70 sereis is coming to Malaysia at the end of September 2021. Specifically, you can expect to see the vivo X70 coming to Malaysia 22nd September 2021 onward. There is no confirmed pricing just yet. vivo is yet to disclose the full colour options for the vivo X70 series too. All we can say for now is; stay tuned.
