The Pebble Smartwatch is Coming Back as RePebble

Pebble, a name synonymous with early smartwatches, is stirring back to life. After its acquisition by Fitbit and subsequent fading from the market, the brand is poised for a potential comeback, driven by its founder and fueled by the open sourcing of its software. This resurgence centres around a new e-ink wearable project and a renewed focus on the core principles that made Pebble popular in the first place.

why were bringing pebble back 1 pebble lineup
Source: Repebble.com

For those unfamiliar with the brand’s history, Pebble was a pioneer in the smartwatch space. Its focus on simplicity, long battery life thanks to e-ink displays, and a user-friendly interface resonated with many users. Pebble smartwatches were known for their ability to deliver notifications, track basic fitness metrics, and offer a degree of customizability. However, the company struggled to compete with the rise of more feature-rich smartwatches from established tech giants and was eventually acquired by Fitbit in 2016.

Now, several years later, Pebble’s founder, Eric Migicovsky, is embarking on a new venture centred around e-ink wearables. While details remain somewhat scarce, the project aims to recapture the essence of Pebble’s original appeal: long battery life, clear displays, and a focus on core smartwatch functionalities. This new project – RePebble – isn’t a direct revival of the Pebble brand, but it carries the spirit of Pebble’s design philosophy forward. The use of e-ink technology is a clear nod to Pebble’s legacy and a recognition of the enduring appeal of this display technology for wearables.

Source: Wikipedia.org | The Original Pebble Watch

Adding another layer to this narrative, Google has recently open-sourced PebbleOS’s source code. Migicovsky notes in the RePebble blog post that this development was due to his request to Google. This is a significant development, as it allows developers and enthusiasts to explore the inner workings of Pebble’s software and potentially contribute to its further development. While the open-sourced code may not be directly tied to Migicovsky’s new project, it provides a valuable resource for anyone interested in building upon Pebble’s legacy. The availability of this code could lead to the creation of custom firmware, new apps, and potentially even community-driven hardware projects.

The timing of these developments – the new e-ink wearable project and the open-sourcing of Pebble’s code – has reignited interest in the brand and its potential. While the smartwatch market has evolved significantly since Pebble’s heyday, there remains a segment of users who appreciate the simplicity and long battery life that e-ink wearables offer. Migicovsky’s new project, combined with the open-sourced code, could tap into this market and potentially revive the spirit of Pebble.

It’s important to note that the future of RePebble, or rather, the spirit of Pebble, remains uncertain. Migicovsky’s new project is still in its early stages, and there’s no guarantee of its success. However, the combination of his experience, the open-sourced code, and the enduring appeal of e-ink wearables creates a compelling narrative. Whether this leads to a full-fledged Pebble revival or simply inspires a new generation of e-ink devices remains to be seen. Regardless, it’s clear that Pebble’s legacy continues to resonate, and its influence on the smartwatch market may not be over just yet.

[CES 2025] Ultrahuman Rare Intertwines Luxury and Health Tracking

Ultrahuman, known for its innovative approach to wearable technology, has unveiled its latest offering: the Ultrahuman Rare, a smart ring positioned as the world’s first luxury smart ring. Debuting at CES 2025, Rare aims to blend the artistry of fine jewelry with the precision of advanced health tracking.

1. UH Rare Desert Snow

The Ultrahuman Rare launches with the “Desert Collection,” comprising three distinct pieces: Desert Rose, Dune, and Desert Snow. Each ring’s design draws inspiration from natural desert phenomena. The fluid lines and intricate details aim to capture the beauty and resilience of these arid landscapes. The materials chosen for each ring reflect this focus on luxury and quality.

The Dune and Desert Rose rings are crafted from 18K gold sourced from London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) approved refineries and hallmarked by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Both LBMA and BIS adhere to international standards, ensuring the authenticity and quality of the precious metals used. The Desert Snow ring is made from pt950 platinum, a material composed of 95% platinum, representing one of the highest standards in the jewelry industry and signifying exceptional purity and durability.

The Ultrahuman Rare will use photoplethysmography (PPG) and 6-axis motion sensors for health tracking. These technologies enable the ring to monitor several key health indicators: sleep stages, duration, and quality; activity levels, steps taken, and calories burned; heart rate throughout the day and during workouts; heart rate variability (HRV), a key indicator of stress and recovery; estimated stress levels based on physiological data; and changes in skin temperature, which can be an indicator of overall health.

The design details of each ring further emphasize the desert theme. The outer shell of each ring features sleek, brushed strokes and shimmering details, intended to mimic the interplay of light and texture found in desert landscapes. The Desert Rose, inspired by the crystal formations found in arid sandy conditions, symbolizes the harmony of nature and technology, with a brushed texture that uniquely reflects light. It is crafted from 18K rose gold. The Dune design captures the essence of shifting desert sands, featuring finely crafted grooves that flow around the band, resembling wind patterns on a dune, with a brushed finish enhancing the tactile experience. It is crafted from 18K gold. The Desert Snow ring pays homage to the rare sight of snow in the desert, featuring a frosted finish that evokes the delicate beauty of snowflakes. Subtle shimmering elements aim to mimic the sparkle of snow under the sun, crafted from pt950 platinum.

The Ultrahuman Rare distinguishes itself from other smart rings through its focus on luxury and craftsmanship. While other smart rings often prioritize functionality and affordability, the Rare aims to appeal to a different market segment: those who value high-end materials, exquisite design, and a seamless blend of technology and jewelry. By partnering with high-end retailers like Selfridges London and Printemps Paris, Ultrahuman is further solidifying the Rare’s position as a luxury item, placing it not just in competition with other smart rings but also within the broader landscape of luxury wearables.

[CES 2025] Samsung TVs Embrace Eclipsa Audio

Get ready for a revolution in how you experience sound on your TV. At CES 2025, Samsung unveiled Eclipsa Audio, a groundbreaking 3D audio technology co-developed with Google. This isn’t just about adding a few extra speakers; Eclipsa Audio promises to completely transform the way we hear audio content on our TVs. Let’s dive into what Eclipsa Audio is, why its integration into Samsung TVs is a significant development, and how it could change the way you watch movies, TV shows, and even play games.

Samsung TVs and Displays CES 2025 Samsung Vision AI and Display Lineups dl2

What is Eclipsa Audio?

Imagine a world where sound doesn’t just come from your TV speakers, but surrounds you, creating a truly immersive experience. That’s the core idea behind Eclipsa Audio. This technology utilizes advanced object-based audio techniques to manipulate the location, intensity, and spatial effects of sounds. Here’s what that means in practical terms:

  • Precise Sound Positioning: Eclipsa Audio lets creators pinpoint the exact location of sounds within a 3D space. Imagine the roar of a jet fighter moving across the screen, or the pitter-patter of rain falling all around you. This level of detail aims to create a more realistic and engaging audio experience.
  • Enhanced Sound Intensity: Eclipsa Audio allows for dynamic control of sound intensity. A whisper at the back of the room can be made audible, while a character’s booming voice can have real impact. This creates a more nuanced and impactful soundscape.
  • Spatial Effects: Eclipsa Audio goes beyond just positioning and intensity. It allows creators to introduce subtle spatial effects that enhance the atmosphere of a scene. Imagine the hushed ambiance of a crowded marketplace or the echo of footsteps in a vast cathedral. These effects can create a more immersive and believable soundscape.

Why is Eclipsa Audio a Big Deal?

Current surround sound systems, like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, do a great job of creating a sense of immersion. However, they rely on pre-defined speaker layouts and channels. Eclipsa Audio, on the other hand, is more flexible. It can adapt to any speaker configuration, including traditional setups and even soundbars. This makes it a potentially more accessible format for a wider range of viewers.

Another key advantage of Eclipsa Audio is its focus on creator control. With this technology, content creators have more tools to sculpt the soundscape of their vision. Think about the difference between watching a movie in a standard theater versus a high-end Dolby Atmos theater. Eclipsa Audio aims to give directors and sound designers that same level of creative control, ultimately leading to a potentially richer and more immersive audio experience for viewers.

Samsung & Google Partner to Bring Eclipsa Audio to Your Living Room

The real magic of Eclipsa Audio lies not just in the technology itself, but in Samsung’s commitment to integrating it into their 2025 TV lineup. This includes everything from the Crystal UHD models to the flagship Neo QLED 8K models. This broad inclusion ensures that a wide range of Samsung TVs, regardless of price point, will have the capability to deliver Eclipsa Audio content.

Furthermore, Samsung isn’t going it alone. Their partnership with Google signifies a broader push toward making Eclipsa Audio an industry standard. Google is integrating Eclipsa Audio support into YouTube, one of the world’s largest streaming platforms. This means that starting in 2025, creators uploading content to YouTube will have the option to utilize Eclipsa Audio tracks alongside their videos. This ensures a ready source of Eclipsa Audio-compatible content for viewers who own Samsung TVs with the technology.

The integration of Eclipsa Audio into Samsung TVs represents a significant leap forward in home entertainment technology. Here’s a glimpse into what this could mean for you:

  • Accessibility Matters: Eclipsa Audio doesn’t require elaborate speaker setups. Even with traditional soundbars or TV speakers, Eclipsa Audio can potentially deliver a more immersive listening experience.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Eclipsa Audio

While Eclipsa Audio is a significant step forward, it’s important to remember that it’s still a new technology. The success of Eclipsa Audio will depend on several factors, including content creation, the hardware ecosystem and overall consumer adoption.

The availability of Eclipsa Audio content will be crucial for its widespread adoption. Google’s integration of Eclipsa Audio into YouTube is a promising start, but wider adoption by other streaming services and content creators will be essential. While Eclipsa Audio is designed to be flexible with different speaker configurations, dedicated Eclipsa Audio sound systems or soundbars could further enhance the experience. It remains to be seen how manufacturers will develop products specifically designed to take full advantage of this technology.

Ultimately, the success of Eclipsa Audio will depend on consumer adoption. If viewers embrace the enhanced audio experience, it could become a new standard in home entertainment.

The Bigger Picture: Sound as a Key Component of Immersive Experiences

Samsung’s integration of Eclipsa Audio highlights a growing trend in the entertainment industry: the increasing importance of sound as a key component of immersive experiences. For years, advancements in display technology have taken center stage, with higher resolutions, better color accuracy, and improved contrast. Now, it seems that audio is finally catching up.

Eclipsa Audio isn’t just about adding more bass or creating a wider soundstage; it’s about creating a more realistic and engaging audio environment that complements the visuals on screen. This shift towards more immersive soundscapes could have a profound impact on how we experience all forms of media, from movies and TV shows to video games and even virtual reality.

A New Era of Home Entertainment?

Samsung’s embrace of Eclipsa Audio, in partnership with Google, is a significant move that could potentially reshape the landscape of home entertainment audio. By giving content creators more control over sound design and making immersive audio more accessible to consumers, Eclipsa Audio has the potential to become a new standard in the industry.

While it’s still early days, the potential of Eclipsa Audio is undeniable. It represents a move beyond traditional channel-based audio, offering a more nuanced, realistic, and immersive sound experience. If content creators embrace the technology and the hardware ecosystem develops accordingly, we could be on the cusp of a new era in home entertainment audio.
