Philips S1301 Shaver Review – A Close Shave

When it comes to personal hygiene, facial hair – or the lack thereof, can play a huge role in how you feel about yourself. That’s why we were pretty excited when we got ahold of the Philips S1301 Shaver for review. Philips has been one of the biggest names when it comes to personal health and hygiene and getting up close and personal with one of their offerings proved to be an interesting experience.

Shaving is a very personal thing for men, especially when it comes to how close it is or even how the final look ends up. Most men are either going for a more manly, rugged look nowadays which usually translates to having a semblance of a stubble. That said, a good percentage of us still default to being clean-shaven. That’s where a shaver – electric or otherwise comes into play.

Packed with Technology

The Philips S1301 shaver is definitely a candidate for a good shaver. It ticks most of the boxes that we would personally look at when it comes to an electric shaver. The first is, like most other electronics – the design. The Philip S1301 shaver is definitely designed well. It feels natural in the hand. It’s ergonomic as well; you won’t be straining your wrist while using it.

It’s also compact, allowing you to simply pack it along with your other toiletries in your bag. However, the one thing that threw us off with the design is the exposed charging port at the bottom. This charging port is also not a standard USB port, instead it’s a proprietary port that requires its own charger – so you’ll need to remember to pack it as well. Speaking of charging, the battery level is indicated by the power button albeit a little counterintuitively. Aside from that, the shaver is sleek and pretty much ticks all the boxes in terms of design.

That said, the true worth of a shaver lies in how well it carries out its function. When it comes to technology, the Philips Series 1000 isn’t lacking much. It’s packed with 27 self-sharpening, mini-blades which Philips guarantees won’t dull for up to 2 years. It has IPX7 certification for use in both wet and dry conditions. This also means that you’ll be able to clean it quickly by simply running water over it.

A Close, Irritating Shave

So the big question is – how does this technology translate when it comes to performance? The gist of it? Not too bad. The small blades are housed within floating heads. These floating heads allow the blades to conform to the contours of your face for a closer shave.

However, when it came to the shaving process, the Series 1000 ended up causing quite a bit of irritation when I used it. It was later pointed out that to get the best experience from the shaver, you needed to use a circular motion. This helped a little bit when it came to irritation. Nonetheless, if your facial hair is on the longer side of things, you may want to avoid doing a dry shave. In my experience using it, it felt as if my facial hair was being plucked more than cut.

Using the Philips S1301 for a wet shave minimised a lot of the irritation I experienced with the dry shave. It seems like the foam provided some much needed lubrication and protection to my skin. That said, the Series 1000 does provide a pretty close shave – something I really appreciated.

A Good Shaver – But We Expected More

With all that in mind, it makes you consider the overall package. The Philips Series 1000 is definitely one of the better, more affordable shavers in the market right now. However, to be very honest, being Philips product, I had higher expectations for the price. This is exacerbated by the options from other brands that come with the same features at a much lower price point.

That said, the Philips Series 1000 shaver is not a bad buy. It’s a shaver which you can travel with and it does what it’s meant to well. You may need to take some extra steps to prevent skin irritation, particularly if you have sensitive skin. However, the Philips S1301 gives you one of the closest shaves that you can get from a shaver in its category. It’s also easy to use out of the box and you can get enough battery life for a shave with just 5 minutes of charging.

All in all, I’d say if you were looking for an affordable shaver with a recognised brand name – you pretty much have it lock, stock and barrel with the Philips Series 1000.

Fitbit Unlocks Health Metrics to More Users

Fitbit is bringing a limited version of their Health Metrics dashboard to more users free. The feature was initially made available for Versa 3 and Sense users with the purchase of the new smartwatch last year. Now, it’s being offered to users of the Versa 2, Inspire 2 and Charge 4.

The Fitbit Health Metrics dashboard is a feature in the Fitbit companion app which allows users to get valuable insights from some of the metrics collected. Data like skin temperature, blood oxygenation, heart rate variability and a few more are analyzed and plotted to give deeper insights into health. Medical professionals are able to use these insights to create plans for action to help improve the users overall health.

With the change, users of the Versa 2, Versa 3, Sense, Charge 4 and Inspire 2 are able to access the Health Metrics dashboard. However, the version that they have access to limits their trends and data to only 1 week. The data available in the dashboard will vary based on the features of the fitness tracker used. That said, the 1 week of data could be more than enough for some.

While it seems like a no-brainer for Fitbit to include this feature in their app, the Health Metrics dashboard has been placed behind the Fitbit Premium paywall. The new update brings a crucial function of fitness trackers to the forefront. This comes in light of research that the company has recently published study which found that critical trend data such as this can help diagnose COVID-19. In addition, Fitbit has begun rolling out the ECG feature in the Sense in more countries.

Samsung’s Quick Share Coming to Windows 10

If there’s been one feature that Apple has had that gives it an edge over Android and Windows users – it would be the seamless connectivity between its mobile and computing ecosystems. However, it looks like that is about to change – at least for Samsung Galaxy users. Samsung has been working with Microsoft to bring its Quick Share feature to Windows 10.

Samsung originally introduced Quick Share with its flagship Galaxy S20 line up last year. The feature created a more unified experience between the Galaxy Tab S7 series and the smartphone allowing users to seamlessly transfer files between the two devices. It does this using a peer-to-peer WiFi network which allows quick transfers even for large files.

Quick Share is apparently making its way to Windows 10 devices and soon. Screencaps of the app have already surfaced online. However, there is no indication when the app will be ready for prime time.

Microsoft and Samsung have been making strides in better integrating their devices for a more seamless user experience since. Just recently, the two titans introduced new features to the Link to Windows feature which allows users to use Android apps natively on their Windows PCs if they have a compatible device.

The inclusion of the feature comes as the latest integration of Samsung’s Galaxy ecosystem into Microsoft’s fold. Galaxy devices have been launching with “Link to Windows” which integrates the smartphone to the laptop via Microsoft’s “Your Phone” app since the introduction of the Galaxy S10 series.

This news also comes on the heels of Samsung’s latest flagship – the Galaxy S21 series getting support for Wireless DeX on Windows devices. Samsung’s Desktop Experience (DeX) gives users access to their smartphone’s content in a more familiar desktop environment. Wireless DeX removes the required USB connection to the laptop. The feature has been available for Samsung displays for a while now.

Revolut Junior: The Financial App for Children Parents Didn’t Know They Needed

SINGAPORE, Feb. 15, 2021 — The average child in Singapore starts receiving pocket money at 7 years old. This is the perfect age for parents to begin engaging their children in conversations about money. Enter Revolut Junior ("Junior") the financial app designed for kids but controlled by a parent or a legal guardian.

Revolut Junior––already launched in more than 30 markets globally––is now available to Revolut customers and their children/wards in Singapore.

A customer who holds an account with Revolut Singapore ("Revolut") can set up a Junior account for free. Revolut Standard customers can set up 1 complimentary Junior account, Revolut Premium customers can set up 2 complimentary Junior accounts, and Revolut Metal customers can set up 5 complimentary Junior accounts. They will also be able to order a specially designed Revolut Junior Visa debit card for their child/ward.

So, just what is it about Revolut Junior that makes it a must-have for both parents and children?

1. It gives parents a great opportunity to talk to their children about money

As society becomes increasingly cashless, children may become less aware of the role that money plays in their everyday lives. Is money a purely digital concept? An infinite resource?

Parents can draw parallels between the money deposited in their child’s Junior account and their own salary credits, to educate their children on the importance of earning and managing money, and demonstrate the concept of opportunity cost.

2. It helps children understand the difference between a Need and a Want

Revolut’s popular digital money tools have been adapted to make learning fun for youngsters. Revolut Premium and Metal customers will have access to additional features on the Revolut app, such as "Tasks" and "Goals", to inspire their children to work towards and save up for a goal. Using this feature, parents can assign a task (and corresponding e-money reward) to their child. When the child checks off the task as "complete" on their Revolut Junior app, parents simply have to acknowledge this on their own Revolut app and the promised reward is transferred to the Junior account. Seeing their account balance go up is a great way to reinforce a child’s habit-reward loop.

If the youngster desires a big ticket item, e.g., an electric guitar, parents/guardians can agree to meet them halfway and have them save up a portion of the cost as a Goal. Revolut Junior empowers children to make independent financial decisions while giving parents a way to track and manage security settings remotely.

3. It gives your child visibility about their money

Children signed up with a Junior account will have the option of downloading the Revolut Junior app on a smartphone. They will be able to access this and personally observe their account balance go up and down. Unlike more traditional offerings, the Revolut Junior app is designed with children in mind for easy and tactile use!

The parent’s Revolut app should ideally be used in tandem with the Revolut Junior app. Children can track, "earn", and manage their allowances while their parents will be able to add and withdraw money, utilise security features (such as the ability to freeze/unfreeze the Junior card), and appoint a Co-Parent to give another adult the ability to control the Junior account.

For more information about Revolut Junior and the applicable terms and conditions, please visit https://www.revolut.com/en-SG/legal/revolut-junior . Revolut Junior is available to all Revolut customers in Singapore, please ensure your app is updated to the latest version.

Aussie Women Less Likely than Men to Celebrate Valentines Day ‘Out of Home’ in 2021; UserTesting Survey

SYDNEY, Feb. 13, 2021 — UserTesting, a leading on-demand Human Insight platform, conducted a survey capturing the responses of Australian men and women around Valentine’s 2021. Study revealed that a majority of women in Australia have made peace with the unprecedented times, choosing to stay indoors on this day. Women also expressed that they would like to spend a quiet evening watching movies, exchanging gifts, and cooking meals with their partners. Whereas a majority of men are looking for romantic getaways on the beaches and planning hiking/other outdoor activities.

Other findings from the study were:

Men are more excited about Valentine’s Day than women in 2021
In the past year, couples have experienced unexpected restrictions on usual dating activities while following stay-at-home norms, social distancing and working from home. So, when respondents were asked how excited they are to, ranging from Not Excited to Extremely (scale of 1-5), a majority of women (70%) were only somewhat excited (3 ratings) while a majority of males (70%) were considerably excited (4 ratings).

Bottle of wine, champagne, spirits – popular gift choices in women
The survey showed a wide gap in genders’ perspectives regarding their gift expectations. 70% of women expressed their likeness for flowers and beverages including bottle of wine, champagne, spirits etc. as their perfect valentine gift. While remaining said Jewelry (necklace, ring, watch) and candles/home accessories. However, with men, there weren’t any popular choices. Chocolates/candies, flowers/plants, gift cards, and beverages were 25% each.

Over-the-top fairy tale romantic ideas to surprise your partner is a faded concept
The survey found that 70% of men said that planning a valentine’s date is a mutual affair with their significant other compared to only 40% of women who said the same. Another 40% of women and 20% of men stated that they were solely responsible for planning activities and 10% of men stated activities were planned solely by their partner.

Cupid arrowing retail over romance?

The survey revealed that romance is losing its sheen to retail as the majority (60%) of women wanted to shop on the holiday and (40%) of men shared the same thoughts. While (30%) of men & women still believe in celebrating love. Remaining (10%) of women and (30%) of men admitted they only celebrate it to make their partner happy.

Safer medical devices with Picosun’s antimicrobial ALD coatings

ESPOO, Finland, Feb. 13, 2021 — Picosun Group, the leading provider of AGILE ALD® (Atomic Layer Deposition) thin film coating technology and solutions, reports excellent aseptic properties measured from its ALD materials.

Numerous ALD oxide coatings deposited with Picosun’s processes showed remarkable reduction of microbial growth and had low values of bacterial endotoxin contamination(*). The coatings were characterized by an independent third party laboratory according to ISO 22196:2011 antimicrobial standard and ANSI/AAMI ST72:2019 bacterial endotoxin standards. These results, along with the earlier tests validating the non-cytotoxicity of Picosun’s ALD films, prove the safety and aseptic benefits of these materials in medical devices, both implanted and external ones.

Millions of people worldwide live with medical implants and the trend is towards even more complex solutions that combine highly advanced microelectronics with miniaturized devices embedded into sensitive areas of the body such as brain, spine, eyes, and heart. Protecting these devices from the corrosive environment of the human body, and vice versa, is of utmost importance considering the safety, correct operation, and lifetime of the implant.

Picosun is the trailblazer in providing medical ALD solutions to device manufacturers. Picosun’s ultra-thin, biocompatible ALD coatings guarantee hermetic encapsulation of the implanted device, with a fraction of film thickness compared to other coating methods and with superior film uniformity and conformality, ensuring pinhole-free coverage over even the smallest details of the device. Extended lifetime and operational reliability of the implant reduces the need for corrective or replacement surgeries, thus saving expensive hospital stays and improving the patient’s quality of life. For manufacturers, hermetic protective coating enables use of more common base materials, e.g. stainless steels instead of precious metals, which in turn makes the manufacturing process easier and saves costs.

"The aseptic properties of our ALD films are so excellent that they surpass even the strictest requirements of the medical implant industry. We are excited to bring our new, advanced medical ALD solutions to the market and help our customers keep spearheading their industries with safer, longer-lasting and user-friendly products," states Juhani Taskinen, Head of Medical Business Area of Picosun Group.

Picosun provides the most advanced AGILE ALD® (Atomic Layer Deposition) thin film coating solutions for global industries. Picosun’s ALD solutions enable technological leap into the future, with turn-key production processes and unmatched, pioneering expertise in the field – dating back to the invention of the technology itself. Today, PICOSUN® ALD equipment are in daily manufacturing use in numerous leading industries around the world. Picosun is based in Finland, with subsidiaries in Germany, USA, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, China mainland and Taiwan, offices in India and France, and a world-wide sales and support network.
