GSMA Heralds a new era of Connected Impact as MWC Shanghai returns as a hybrid event

China continues its rapid uptake of 5G with 200m additional connections in the last year

SHANGHAI, Feb. 23, 2021 — GSMA is celebrating a return to in-person events with the launch of MWC Shanghai 2021, which opens today. This first-of-its-kind experience combines unique in-person and virtual elements, heralding a new era of connectivity and collaboration for the mobile industry.

MWC Shangai 2021
MWC Shangai 2021

Around 20,000 visitors are expected to gain first-hand insights into the mobile industry through unique content and debates hosted at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. They will be joined by thousands more who will log onto My MWCS Online from over a hundred countries. There will be plenty of opportunities to gain new industry information and make important business contacts.

"Today marks an important milestone for Asia’s mobile industry and the wider region’s economy. MWC Shanghai 2021 is the first hybrid event of its kind bringing innovations and ideas to attendees in-person and online," said John Hoffman, CEO GSMA Ltd. "Sadly, I cannot be there in person but will connect as a virtual attendee to join the debate and witness technology innovations that are already shaping our future. I’m looking forward to engaging with you during the proceedings and hearing your thoughts after its close."

Exciting thought leadership and world-class exhibits

MWC Shanghai 2021 was inaugurated by a keynote address from Mats Granryd, Director General GSMA. Presentations from organisations like China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Huawei, Lenovo, Nokia, Verizon and ZTE, combined with a host of other thought leaders and exhibits from over 200 companies, such as Nokia Shanghai Bell, Qualcomm, and Samsung make this a not-to-be-missed experience, in-person or online.

The theme of MWC Shanghai 2021 is ‘Connected Impact’, and the agenda showcases how the digital ecosystem supports global recovery and transforms lives. Sessions on 5G Connectivity, Connected Industry, AI and Start-up Innovation with other exciting features like the 5G Innovation Zone and the Digital Leaders Programme are highly anticipated.

China continues to be one of the world’s leading markets for 5G technology, according to ‘The Mobile Economy China 2021 Report’ from GSMA Intelligence, which is being launched at the event. Key findings include the scale of 5G uptake in China: during 2020 there were more than 200 million new connections. By 2025 it is estimated that there will be more than 800 million 5G connections across the country, driving a range of products and services for both individual consumers and the wider economy.

Supporting the post-pandemic recovery

Investment in 5G is also helping the global economy overcome the effects of Covid-19 and transition to a post-pandemic economic recovery. By 2030, upgrades to 5G will add more than $600 billion annually to the global economy, according to GSMA research. That’s approximately 2.1% of the income growth expected in the coming decade, across all industries and sectors.

"It’s been a tough 12 months but a path to a post-pandemic world is starting to emerge. Importantly, 5G and mobile communications sit at the heart of that recovery," said Mats Granryd. "We’re already planning for the return of MWC Barcelona this summer. The momentum created in Shanghai will be carried on to the Barcelona event, which will mark the next step forward for our industry."

Industry professionals wanting to discover more about the latest developments in 5G should attend MWC Shanghai 2021.

WhatsApp’s New Policies Are Coming into Effect, Here’s What Will Happen If You Haven’t Accepted

WhatsApp was in the middle of a media firestorm in early January thanks to the announcement of a controversial change to their Data Sharing Policy. The company, which was acquired by Facebook back in 2014, is requiring users to accept the new terms to continue using the application. The app will now be sharing a slew of data including your phone contact lists, app logs, diagnostic data, and status messages with its parent company. WhatsApp did send a prompt to users to accept the changes to continue using the app, however, it seems like there is a vocal portion of their users who have opted to look at its competitors: Signal and Telegram.

With the deadline for users to accept the new agreement looming, the company has published a new FAQ regarding the issue. The effective date of the new agreement has been extended to May 15, 2021, from the initial February 8, 2021. They have also indicated what would happen if users are still reluctant to accept their new terms – and to be frank, they seem to be coercing users into the new terms.

If you still don’t accept the new policy, you’ll essentially lose access to your messages and data in the app. The new FAQ states that WhatsApp will not delete your account. Instead, it will limit the capabilities of the application. In fact, you’ll be relegated to calls and notifications “for a short time”. The company hasn’t clarified what it means by “a short time” but during this period, users will not be able to access any of their messages.

While this is a less than ideal way of handling their faux pax, the company seems adamant to lose its user base and continue on with its plans to adopt the new changes. We even had Acronis’ Chief Information Security Officer, Kevin Reed weigh in on the issue in our Tech & Tonic Podcast. In the immediate fallout from the abrupt and poorly managed announcement, users have been flocking to other competitors with Telegram and Signal in the forefront.

HiFi, Clips & Better Podcast Discovery Coming to Spotify

Spotify took center stage at their StreamOn event and, Boy!… did they have a lot to announce.

The streaming service is gaining even more momentum internationally with a rollout to an additional 80 countries. This comes on the tail of their recent launch in South Korea. The countries joining the Spotify fold include a large number of those in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America including countries such as Bangladesh, Cameroon, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mongolia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka; reaching over a billion potential users. With the new additions, Spotify is now available in over 170 countries putting it on par with competitors like Apple Music and YouTube Premium.

Spotify HiFi: CD Quality, Lossless Streaming

https://youtu.be/W07MvWbuWkI

In addition to this, Spotify also announced “Spotify HiFi”. The new HiFi offering brings CD quality, lossless audio to the music streaming platform. This will make Spotify more appealing to the audiophiles out there as they will be able to get better, more detailed sound via the app. The new service ups the bit rate available on Spotify from the current 320kbps to about 1,400kbps. This means that the more nuanced attributes of songs are able to better come through when streamed. The company did trial the service in the U.S. back in 2017 for a USD$7.50 (MYR30.32) premium on top of its subscription. However, aside from noting that the new Spotify HiFi will be coming to select markets, they have not revealed much.

Artist-Audience Interaction with Spotify Clips

If HiFi streaming wasn’t enough, Spotify also officially announced its Clips feature. The new feature functions in a similar fashion to Instagram Stories or Snaps on Snapchat. They allow artists to interact directly with their audience on Spotify by sharing clips akin to their social media. If this sounds familiar, it’s cause the company was testing the feature out over the past Christmas holidays in the U.S. However, with this announcement, the feature will see a more widespread release. Clips will appear on playlists to allow users to get a glimpse into personal moments from the artists.

Podcasts: Better Discovery, New Experiences

Spotify didn’t leave any stone unturned during its StreamOn event. The app has become one of the largest Podcast distribution platforms since it introduced the feature. Keeping that in mind, the company is looking at making Podcast discoverability easier for creators. In a nutshell, the company is looking to serve podcast episodes to listeners based on their preferences. It will also employ A.I. and machine learning to help users search for podcasts better.

In addition, the company is also working on creating new experiences when it comes to podcasts. Spotify is working with WordPress to create podcasts from written content. Creators will also be able to engage with audiences more directly with interactive Q&As, polls, and even video. The company is also making its Ad Studio available for podcast creators to help monetize their podcasts better.

Netflix Take Content Discovery On-The-Go with “Downloads for You”

Being on-the-go with spotty internet can be a very irritating predicament; even more so when you’re trying to play catch up with your new binge-worthy show. Three years ago, Netflix addressed that with Smart Downloads which automatically downloaded the next episode of your show. This allowed you to seamlessly enjoy your show without any interruptions.

This year, they’re taking it one step further with Downloads For You. The new feature automatically downloads shows or movies that Netflix thinks you’d like. Rest assured, you won’t be dealing with terabytes of data being downloaded into your device – unless that’s what you want. Users will be able to control how much space the new feature takes up.

Managing the feature is as easy as going to the downloads tab and toggling the Downloads For You option. After which users will be able to select how much data the feature should take up – 1GB, 3GB, or 5GB. Of course, the more data you allow it to take up, the more content you get.

The feature is now available to Netflix users with an Android device. Netflix is working to get the feature on their iOS app soon.

Carpet Cleaning Innovator Zerorez Atlanta Cleans Up Their Customer Experience while Drastically Cutting Frustration of Remote Agents with Bright Pattern Contact Center

Zerorez Atlanta, a fast-growing carpet cleaning company, deploys Bright Pattern Cloud Contact Center to support customers over traditional and digital channels with a 100% remote workforce

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Feb. 22, 2021 — Bright Pattern, a leading provider of AI-powered cloud contact center software, has been deployed by Zerorez Atlanta to provide a personalized customer experience over inbound and outbound voice, chat, and text message channels. Zerorez Atlanta performed extensive research to determine the optimal omnichannel cloud contact center vendor that they could recommend to all Zerorez franchises across 60 U.S. cities and found the perfect partner in Bright Pattern.

Read Full Success Story

Zerorez Atlanta experienced outages lasting as long as five hours every couple of months with its existing cloud contact center provider, and they lacked remote functionality for their fully remote workforce. The company also experienced problems integrating the contact center platform to its proprietary CRM. After evaluating multiple vendors, Zerorez Atlanta chose to partner with Bright Pattern because of its flexible integrations, ease-of-use, modern technology and features, and significantly lower setup costs.

With Bright Pattern’s platform, Zerorez Atlanta saw a massive decrease in agent frustration, with complaints from agents dropping by 75% in the first month alone. Zerorez Atlanta has also seen almost no downtime, allowing the company to provide better customer service without the frequent outages experienced with its prior cloud contact center provider. Zerorez Atlanta has also seen cost savings and fast ROI due to a combination of lower deployment costs and the elimination of lengthy, frequent downtime. Zerorez Atlanta has already saved an average of 30 to 40 dollars per agent per month while also reducing average call handling times by at least 30 seconds per call since moving to Bright Pattern. Furthermore, Bright Pattern’s software was able to automatically diagnose connectivity issues for remote workers and notify Zerorez Atlanta agents when connectivity issues were caused by the agent’s internet connection.

“When we implemented Bright Pattern’s platform, agent frustration dropped dramatically,” exclaimed Brandon Colton, Customer Care Operations Manager at Zerorez Atlanta. “Rather than spending all day fighting the software, agents are now helping customers. Bright Pattern has made being a 100% remote workforce easy and reliable. From the moment we partnered with Bright Pattern, the process couldn’t have been smoother.”

Zerorez Atlanta plans to integrate more technology with Bright Pattern’s platform to make the customer and agent experience even better and more tailored for their use cases. In the upcoming months, Zerorez Atlanta plans to implement AI into their CX operations through chatbots and live chat on their website.

Companies of all sizes select Bright Pattern to support their customer care organizations because of its simplified – yet robust – omnichannel platform, offering traditional channels; emerging channels like Facebook Messenger; in-app customer support; enterprise functionality; cloud-first architecture; and the ability to modify without the use of outside services. Bright Pattern was recently recognized by Ovum as a Market Challenger, by Omdia for best platform functionality, by Frost & Sullivan as a top-performing vendor, and by Gartner as a leader in the Call Center FrontRunners Quadrant.

About Bright Pattern
Bright Pattern provides the simplest and most powerful AI-powered omnichannel contact center software for innovative midsize and enterprise companies. To make customer service brighter, easier, and faster than ever before, Bright Pattern offers the only true omnichannel cloud platform with embedded AI that can be deployed quickly and nimbly by business users-without costly professional services. Bright Pattern allows companies to offer an effortless and personal customer experience across channels like voice, text, chat, email, video, messengers, and bots. Bright Pattern also allows companies to measure and act on every interaction on every channel with embedded AI omnichannel quality management. Samsung Smartwatches Joining the Wear OS Family?

Samsung’s wearables have been one of the company’s many boons when it comes to software and functionality. If you’ve been following the wearables market, Samsung’s Tizen OS has quickly become one of the more functionally stable operating systems in the market. However, there’s always been a looming cloud over Tizen as Samsung’s own Galaxy devices come equipped with Google’s Android OS.

Twitter user and prolific leaker, @UniverseIce tweeted on Friday that Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Watch would be replacing its well thought out Tizen OS with Google’s Wear OS. If true, the switch would seem to benefit Google’s floundering Wear OS more than Samsung’s Galaxy Wearables lineup. It would also make Samsung one of the biggest names behind the OS aside from FOSSIL, Casio, and Skagen.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch series has seen much success in previous years thanks to its design and impressively thought-out software. This change seems to be rather uncharacteristic for Samsung given the popularity of the devices and also the company’s recent thrust for its SmartThings platform. That said, Samsung’s move to embrace Google’s services isn’t anything new. We’ve seen it in recent years with Bixby slowly taking a backseat to Google Assistant in the company’s OneUI.

That said, Samsung could very well be looking at offering a whole new series of smartwatches built for Wear OS. The other possibility is the company introducing a Wear OS version of the upcoming Galaxy Watch. This would bolster the number of the devices in Samsung’s Galaxy Ecosystem and create a new offering for those who have shied away from Samsung’s wearables for so long.

While highly unlikely, this could be an indication that Wear OS has finally reached a point where Samsung is comfortable putting it on their devices. There have been many limitations when it came to both Tizen and Wear OS. However, the former has consistently been able to keep up with new features and better customizability.

Is Fitbit Working on a New Premium Plan?

Fitbit’s health-centric devices have been some of the best fitness devices on the market to date. The company has successfully developed sensors and an intuitive interface that allows users to not only collect data but view them in a way that is easy to understand. However, in 2019, Fitbit saw the opportunity to bring even more insights to their users at a premium.

Fitbit Premium has been up and running since late 2019. It provides deeper insights into the data that is already collected by your Fitbit device – some of which could even be used to detect COVID-19 without the PCR test. Just recently, the company extended the availability of a limited version of Fitbit Premium available to users of the Versa 3 and Inspire 2. Now, it seems like that may be more behind that.

Source: Fitbit

Fitbit has recently sent out a customer survey which asks users to consider an cheaper tier of their Fitbit Premium service. According to Android Central, the theoretical new tier would be priced at USD$2.99 (MYR12.09); less than half the price of the current plan at USD$9.99 (MYR40.38). However, it seems like the offerings would be significantly less than the current Premium plan which offers not only user data but also guided workouts and more. The new plan would allow users to “see your activity, sleep, stress, and health metrics for the last month, year, forever with unlimited historical data.”

It seems like this may be Google gauging users’ valuation of the data and insights they get from Fitbit devices. This comes as no surprise as the sale of Fitbit to Google essentially limited what Google could do with the data collected from Fitbit devices. Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, Rick Osterloh, mentions the issue of data privacy and Google’s acquisition of Fitbit stating that the acquisition was about hardware and never the data.

PR asset of Fitbit Premium on Android, showing Today screen with insights. For placement into renders or lifestyle imagery only.

This deal has always been about devices, not data, and we’ve been clear since the beginning that we will protect Fitbit users’ privacy. We worked with global regulators on an approach which safeguards consumers’ privacy expectations, including a series of binding commitments that confirm Fitbit users’ health and wellness data won’t be used for Google ads and this data will be separated from other Google ads data.

Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President, Devices & Services at Google

However, Google being a data company understands that there is an inherent value to all the data being collected. Hence, this straw poll to see if users are willing to spend to get access to their data and insights is just an exercise of how much value users place in the data collected by their Fitbits.

That said, we have always been in the camp where users should be given access to their data regardless of a “Premium” fee – the other goodies in the premium subscription are definitely worth the investment, if you see the need or want to make better sense of the data that’s being collected.
