The HUAWEI Mate X2 Launched Still with Android Based EMUI 11

There has been plenty of rumours pointing toward HUAWEI moving toward their very own developed Harmony OS. They say 2021 is the year they will jump into their own Operating System (OS). According to the launch as well, we can expect to see the first smartphones with Harmony OS by April 2021.

But the launch is not about HUAEI’s upcoming smartphone interface. It is about a certain replacement for the elusive HUAWEI Mate Xs of 2020.  Welcome to the HUAWEI Mate X2.

The HUAWEI Mate X2, as you would have guessed, is the HUAWEI Mate Xs. Funnily enough, it does not look anything like a replacement for the HUAWEI Mate Xs. It resembles a certain foldable flagship from its competitor, to be fair.

Source: HUAWEI

That may not necessarily be a bad thing though. That sort of standardises a foldable smartphone format that everyone can agree on. While it does lack a little innovative flair, it also means that we know what to expect from a certain type of devices in the future.

The HUAWEI Mate X2 is now a dual display wielding device instead of a single foldable display beast. It makes a little bit more sense in terms of device handling as well with this type of inside-outside display layout. It also justifies the pricing a little bit better than before. You are now paying for two displays instead of one.

While the HUAWEI Mate X2 looks like a “Me Too” device, HUAWEI has made every inch of improvement they think a foldable smartphone like its type should have. For one, visually, the 6.45-inch display is a proper Full HD display at 2,700 pixels by 1,106 pixels. Inside, you get an 8-incher with 2,480 x 2,200 pixels on board, that’s more than 1440p and almost square.

Source: HUAWEI

But that is not all, the front display is a 90Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling display worthy of any games you throw at it. It is an actual usable display that is not too narrow to enjoy, or too tall to work with. It looks like a proper smartphone display you can enjoy. The internal display is a fast-moving 90Hz refresh rate display too with 180Hz in touch sampling for near instant response times.

The device is not even that thick to begin with. The HUAWEI Mate X2 is only 14.7mm thick at the thickest when it is folded. There also seems to be no gaps when you fold the device, it is a flush device and looks like it will feel like a single device. When you unfold it, it is 8.8mm at its thickest point. We say that because the device is designed as a wedge and to be heavier at the bottom plate of the device. That is also the only way for the device to be completely evenly squared when you fold it.

Powering the device is a HUAWEI Kirin 9000 System on a Chip (SoC). It is also the same one that we can find in a HUAWEI Mate 40 series. Alongside the powerful SoC you also get 8GB of RAM to work with.

Source: HUAWEI

Unlike its rival, the HUAWEI Mate X2 only packs two camera modules, both outside the device. This way, the 8-inch internal display remains undisturbed and full. Out the front display then is a 16-Megapixel selfie camera. But there is also a quad-camera set up at the back that fires at 50-Megapixel, 16-Megapixel, 12-Megapixel, and 8-Megapixel.

The 50-Megapixel main camera is the same ones you will find on the HUAWEI Mate 40 series as well, so you are not getting anything less than the best. You get a single ultra-wide camera with the 16-Megapixel. The two others are zoom lenses at 3x optical zoom factor (12MP) and a 10x optical zoom factor (8MP). As with any modern flagship you can record videos at 4K resolution.

To cap it all off, the EMUI 11 device runs on an internal 4,500 mAh battery. That battery charges at 55W at the maximum. That is good news considering that it also supports 5G and WiFi 6+. Of course, it charges via USB Type-C.

The biggest question is now, how expensive it will be. The HUAWEI Mate X2 will be available in China 25th February, 2021 onward and will come with a charger out-of-the-box. The get to choose between 256GB or 512GB variants at CN¥ 17,999 (MYR 11,270*) and CN¥ 18,999 (MYR 11,896*). There is no word yet on when the device will get to Malaysia. We are expecting them to mention the device’s local availability to be mentioned closer to the global launch of the HUAWEI P50 series. Still, keep watch of this space. For more information, you can head to HUAWEI.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Series Gets 128GB Version in Malaysia

A month after the introduction of their new flagship series: the Galaxy S21, Samsung is adding new options to their lineup. The Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra are getting an additional 128GB version on top of the 256GB and 512GB version already in the market. The new variants also come with lower prices starting at MYR3,499 (USD$865.67) for the Galaxy S21.

The new variants lower the barrier of ownership for the series. Bringing the S21 to a palatable price. However, keep in mind that the new S21 series doesn’t come with a microSD card slot; this means you’ll be stuck with only 128GB of memory. However, it’s very unlikely that you’ll be needing more. The new variants keep the RAM spec of the base models. The S21 and the S21+ will have 8GB of RAM while the S21 Ultra will have 12GB of RAM.

Purchases of the Galaxy S21 series will come with a few freebies including the Galaxy SmartTag, the Galaxy Fit2, and the Wireless Charger Trio during the introductory period. These freebies come with the purchase of any S21 series variant.

The introduction of the new variants comes after Samsung revised the pricing for their Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy S20 FE smartphones. The smartphones get a pretty significant repricing with the Galaxy Z Flip getting over MYR1,000 in reduction. It is now available at MYR3,999 (USD$989.28) from the original MYR5,888 (USD$1456.58). The Galaxy S20 FE gets an MYR400 reduction for both the 5G and 4G LTE variants. Their prices are now reduced to MYR2,999 and MYR2,299 respectively.

Color Star Technology Co., Ltd. (NASDAQ: CSCW) Announces $26 Million Private Placement for Upgrade to Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality Technologies

NEW YORK, Feb. 23, 2021 — Color Star Technology Co., Ltd. (NASDAQ: CSCW) (hereinafter referred to as "Color Star" or the"Company"), today announced a private placement of $26 million at price of $1.30 per share. The proceeds from this placement will be used toward the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies to create virtual communities for the Company’s software application (hereinafter referred to as the "Color Star APP").

Since its launch in September 2020, the Color Star APP has already acquired a registered user base exceeding 1 million and growing, and is also the first online software that focuses on interactions with celebrities. The Company is currently collaborating with Silicon Valley software engineers and a Chinese technology R&D company to create AI with blockchain technology. Specifically, the collaboration will focus on the development and application of 3D virtual reality (VR) technology to online concerts, in the hope of recreating these concerts as "live" concerts, and resolving the solitary and non-interactive nature of online concerts. The Company’s goal is to transform the experience of an online concert to that comparable to watching it in-person. Towards this end, the company has also invested heavily in MR, which is an extension of VR and AR. The creation of MR scenes gives the audience, who are sitting in front of their screens at home, a similar experience to being at a live concert, where they are immersed in 3D scenes with their senses activated. At the same time, they can communicate with other participants from around the world through virtual communications, and interact with celebrities in real time. MR technology also allows other benefits, such as allowing for real-time on-site seat selection, so that there will no longer be a single ticket price for online concerts, but different seats reflecting different viewing angles and price levels, which creates an overall more customized and realistic experience.

Because the Company’s existing 2D products are unable to resolve the issue of dizziness for the audience, it will launch a more futuristic naked-eye 3D vision technology, allowing audiences to nearly replicate the experiences of live scenes. The Company also plans to develop a wireless Bluetooth headset technology that allows for real-time, high-quality, surround-sound to complement and enhance the virtual experience.

The CEO of Color Star, Mr. Luke Lu, commented: "The upgrade and development of AI and AR technology will be a revolution for the Company. We are collaborating with many top research institutions and technical professionals to create an AI that is unique to Color Star which combines AR and MR technologies. This integration of AR and MR will create a realistic virtual world, and demonstrates that Color Star is not only an internet company but also a high-technology company. The Company has plans to establish a center in Silicon Valley that focuses on the research and development of VR, which will be integrated into the Company’s various businesses, including offline and online concerts, celebrity education, and peripheral product sales, so that users are not only viewinga web page on 2D, but actually merging parts of VR with reality."

"Color Star’s upgrade and development in AI and AR is expected to be a breakthrough in the field of technological development. The application of VR is expected to be inevitable for many industries, including the future of online video, communication, and entertainment. We hope this time the VR we develop and create will bring our users an unprecedented experience. I believe with the development and application of more advanced AI and AR technologies, there will be more reasons for users to experience the Color Star APP, and our user base will grow rapidly. In the meantime, the application of multiple scenes will soon be reflected in the Companys upcoming online concerts. With the entertainment revolution driven by the development and upgrade of new technology, the Company expects to attract more audiences worldwide. In addition, blockchain technology can be used in various applications in the near future, such as helping the Company in the development of its copyright platform, celebrity interaction platform, peripheral product sales, and concert ticket sales businesses," concluded Mr. Lu.

Samsung Ups Its Commitment to Security with 4 Years of Support for Devices

Let’s be frank, Samsung’s track record when it comes to device support hasn’t been the best. However, in recent years, the company has shown a vested interest in demonstrating its commitment to providing more secure devices. One of the ways in which they have done this is by decreasing their rollout times for updates across the board.

However, it seems like they are looking to up the ante with new policies. Just recently, in August, the company announced that it would provide three major updates to all its Android-powered devices at the launch of the Note20 series. Today, Samsung announced that, in addition to the three major updates, they would be providing four years of security patches. This promise extends to devices released since 2019 – i.e the Galaxy S10 series onward. The commitment doesn’t only cover flagships though, Samsung is committing to support all their major line ups including the Galaxy S, Galaxy A, Galaxy Note, Galaxy XCover, and Galaxy Tab line ups.

In its announcement, Samsung listed the complete list of Galaxy Devices eligible for this new commitment.

Eligible Galaxy Devices Include:

SeriesModels
Galaxy Foldable devicesFold, Z Fold2 5G, Z Flip, Z Flip 5G
Galaxy SS10, S10+, S10e, S10 5G, S10 Lite, S20 5G, S20+ 5G, S20 Ultra 5G, S20 FE 5G, S21 5G, S21+ 5G, S21 Ultra 5G
Galaxy NoteNote10, Note10+, Note10+ 5G, Note20 5G, Note20 Ultra 5G
Galaxy AA10e, A20, A50, A11, A21, A51, A51 5G, A71 5G
Galaxy XCoverXCover FieldPro, XCover Pro
Galaxy TabTab Active Pro, Tab Active3, Tab A 8 (2019), Tab A with S Pen, Tab A 8.4 (2020), Tab A7, Tab S5e, Tab S6, Tab S6 5G, Tab S6 Lite, Tab S7, Tab S7+

That said, Samsung also highlights in the footnotes that the availability of security patches and updates is subject to market and device. This could mean that lower priority regions may still be stuck getting lagging updates if any at all. So far, Samsung has kept to its word in Malaysia and countries like the U.S. and U.K.

Samsung’s move to provide these updates go above the minimum requirement that Google has set for its Andoird OEMs. Let’s be honest, it doesn’t seem like the company has been enforcing the requirement. However, Samsung’s move to champion the updates under their security umbrella brings a little bit more reliability and longevity to the Android Ecosystem.

5G development accelerates, driving 5G networks to improve performance

A new communication technology generally dominates for a decade, evolving to provide stronger capabilities, before being superseded by the next generation. In the past year, 5G has been evolving at a faster rate, showing its massive potential. The continuous improvement of experience in customer connections and enrichment of Internet of Things (IoT) services raise the requirements on connection capabilities. "The ever-increasing demand for wireless connections is the fundamental driving force to continuously advance mobile technologies," said Dr. Tong.

Therefore, 5G must constantly improve its capabilities. Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services are driving a significant upsurge in data demand, requiring 5G networks to increase capacity to guarantee premium experience. With the introduction of reduced capability (REDCAP), massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC) services will be available on more terminals to fulfill the massive diverse IoT requirements. Ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) services require networks to reduce transmission latency and provide latency-guaranteed connection services so as to meet the high-quality connection requirements of remote and programmable logic controller (PLC) control.

5G must expand its boundary of capabilities to open up a new space of business

As new applications keep emerging in the market, the three use cases originally defined in 5G need enhancement to meet diverse IoT service requirements. The boundary of 5G capabilities must be expanded to open up a new space of business.

Immersive interaction services are rapidly developing. 5G AR/VR has enabled superior virtual experience. With the rise of lightweight XR devices, 5G XR will also become a reality. This requires 5G to be further enhanced to deliver premium immersive experiences. 5G networks will be required to increase its average speed from 120 Mbps to 2 Gbps as high definition improves from 4K to 16K. To ensure real-time interaction in the virtual world, 5G must also further reduce transmission latency from the current 20 ms to 5 ms.

Uplink-centric networks are accelerating industrial digitalization. Currently, 5G applications are growing at an unprecedented rate, raising the requirements on uplink speeds. Various consumer AR/XR services require high-definition images and videos to be sent from local devices to clouds for further rendering. Remote control and machine vision in industrial applications also require real-time transfer of 4K and 8K videos. This will lead to a considerable increase in the proportion of uplink traffic over 5G networks to above 40%. To deal with such a huge amount of uplink traffic, 5G uplink capabilities must be improved by at least 10 times.

In addition, 5G must provide sensing capabilities to empower remote control, vehicle-road synergy, unmanned transportation, and smart logistics. For example, by introducing cellular Massive MIMO’s beam sweeping to sensing technologies, both sensing and communication, and even indoor high-precision positioning services, can be implemented through wireless technologies.

5.5G will become an engine of all-industry digitalization

Based on its abundant practices while helping realize the prospects in the mobile industry, Huawei has proposed 5.5G to contribute to exploring new applications, including uplink centric broadband communication (UCBC), real-time broadband communication (RTBC), and harmonized communication and sensing (HCS), with the aim to build an engine of all-industry digitalization.

"Both technology and business are essential to stimulate and promote the development of an industry. The mobile industry, the world’s largest wireless connection market, reaches trillions of US dollars every year," said Dr. Tong. "The accelerating integration of 5G with various industries will create a new market space worth more than US$10 trillion." Due to the lack of collaboration between the connection technologies of industrial services, the applications are often limited to just a single or several applications, far from a scaled effect. As a result, the market is worth just billions of US dollars. The continuous evolution of 5G will improve network capabilities and expand service scenarios, adding extra support for achieving the integration while reducing the cost of connections. This will help unleash the potential business opportunities worth over US$100 billion in the IoT industry.

"The innovation of technologies and applications will open up infinite possibilities for 5G evolution in the next decade," Dr. Tong concluded. "The wireless communications industry cannot achieve success without unified standards and industrial collaboration. Together, we should define 5G evolution and promote industrial collaboration to accelerate the maturity of technology and build a sustainable future with 5G."
