They say that a way to a man’s hear is their bellies. We respectfully disagree. The way to any person’s heart is their bellies these days. Eating, in Malaysia at least, is a big part of our lives. Anywhere we go in Malaysia, the discussion of food never stops and is always something that anyone can chime in on.

But food is not just an important part of Malaysians, it is so for any families. Most of your family meeting or gathering happens in the kitchen or the dining room, which is right next to, or connected to your kitchen. There is one big thing in the kitchen too, to make it a kitchen; a fridge, which is what Family Hub is.

Regardless of the name, a fridge is truly a hub for the family. It is the one furniture that is shared within a household and used from day to night by every single person in the family. The Samsung Family Hub fridge lives up to that name and turns itself into a smart hub and assistant for your family. But it is more than just a fridge that is connected to your other electronics, it is a little more than just a fridge with a display too.

The Samsung Family Hub refrigerator is not technically a new product name. The product has existed for a while now. It was also one of the most interesting concept fridges when it launched. Especially, when they managed to fit a Harman Kardon speaker to the unit in 2019.

For 2020, The Samsung Family Hub got smarter in terms of software. Of course, it is a better fridge as well. But if you already have the older Family Hub, there is no need for you to go out to buy a new fridge. Still, new things are always nice; we know.

So Clever

Samsung says that this is the cleverest refrigerator that you will see. Then again, it might be the only fridge you see in your house. Why you need two large fridges in your home is beyond me.

Still, this is a very clever refrigerator with an intelligent screen and more within the screen. You can plan out your week’s worth of meals if you want to. It even helps you prepare meals with easy access to recipes that you can work with, according to what you have in the fridge.

Because it sort of knows what is in your fridge, you can even plan out what to buy in the groceries to ‘stock up’. If you forgot what to buy, you can always ‘View Inside’ the fridge to know what you have or not have inside the fridge, I know how many times I forgot to bring out my shopping list. Even when I do bring them out, I will have some missing things.

Family Center

As its name suggests, the Family Hub is meant to be the centrepiece of your family. Okay, maybe not a centrepiece sculpture, it is just a big storage box after all; how good can it look? It is where your family gathers.

We stick everything on the fridge too. You might stick your kid’s drawing, your shopping lists, your notes for your mother, your notes for your father, your notes for your kids, your husband, your wife, you name it. That will kind of clutter your fridge though. What if your fridge magnet decided not to be a fridge magnet anymore? You lose your notes.

With Family Board though on the display of the Family Hub fridge though, you will not lose your notes to the bottom of the fridge. It even has a built-in calendar to put on the screen for good measure. This means that you only need to pin whatever notes you need to put on the Family Board and it still stay there until you take it down or whoever it was intended has seen it. You can even take a family photo on your smartphone and load it to the fridge to pin it on Family Board.

Fun for the Whole Family

There is still a speaker on this new Family Hub though. With Connected Living, the Family Hub with its speakers is even better. It is a Tizen device after all.

The Family Hub can access your favourite music apps still. You can access Spotify, or Deezer, or Joox, or whatever your favourite music streaming app is and start playing music when you are preparing your meals. If you prefer to keep yourself updated with the latest trends in Malaysia, you can access the radio stations too, or open your favourite news aggregator to do more reading while preparing breakfast.

What if you want to catch up on your daily shows on Netflix? Oh yes, you can do that too, thanks to the brilliant display. You can even go on YouTube to get your short video fix if you really want.

SmartThings with Bixby

The Samsung Family Hub is a Samsung device with Tizen OS anyway, which also means that it has built-in assistant. Well, it is Bixby.

But thanks to Samsung’s SmartThings, the Samsung Family Hub is even cleverer. You can control the rest of your home with the fridge now. You can turn on your TV, your air conditioning, air purifier, your washing machine, and your vacuum cleaner too; all from your fridge. Provided, they are all Samsung devices too. You can even answer your calls from your fridge too if you need to.

The Samsung Family Hub starts from MYR 8,999. It is quite a large refrigerator though for that price. Do make sure that the fridge can fit your kitchen or design your kitchen around your fridge. It is now available from Samsung’s authorised retailers from across Malaysia.

SEOUL, South Korea, Aug. 18, 2020 — The service that allows delivery robots to come and go outdoor between restaurants and apartments to deliver food has become a reality for the first time in Korea. Woowa Brothers Corp. (CEO Bomjun Kim), the mother company that runs "Baedal Minjok" (hereinafter Baemin) stated on August 18 that the company has started a delivery service using self-driving outdoor delivery robot, "Dilly Drive," at "Gwanggyo Alley Way," a multipurpose housing complex in Gwanggyo, Suwon city.

The outdoor delivery robot service newly introduced to Gwanggyo Alley Way can be used by anyone, including residents and visitors. 1,100 residents of apartments and studio flats in Gwanggyo Alley Way can choose the menu and make orders from the restaurants and cafes within the apartment complex by just opening their Baemin applications and scanning QR codes in their houses. Orders can also be made at the plaza within the complex, using QR codes placed on outdoor tables.

When there’s an order, the five Dilly drives at Gwanggyo Alley Way go from the station to the restaurant on its own. And once the restaurant staff places the food in Dilly Drive and press ‘go’ button, the robot starts the delivery. Customers can check the current location of Dilly Drive via Baemin application and get notifications 100m before and upon arrival. Customers can receive food either on the first floor of the building or at the designated outdoor table in the plaza.

The Dilly Drive at Gwanggyo Alley Way has evolved with a newly added remote control function, which the Dilly Drive used at the Konkuk University campus did not have. With its 6 wheels, Dilly Drive walks in the speed of 4~5 km per hour, which is the speed of a person walking. Once charged, it can run for more than 8 hours, and with its headlights, it can deliver at night as well. Dilly Drive can carry about 6 lunch boxes or 12 cups of beverages per delivery.

Woowa Brothers has prepared various safety measures to guarantee the safe driving of Dilly Drive. The company has thoroughly examined the road condition and travel route of the people in the complex, and set Dilly Drive to go slowly in parts where there usually are a lot of people or children. At crosswalks with a lot of cars, Dilly Drive comes to a stop, and its safety has been enhanced with the real time control via the video surveillance system installed at the apartment complex. For the first month of service, Dilly Drive will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the weekdays, and its hours of operation will gradually be extended.

It is a first time in Korea and not very common worldwide for a delivery robot to receive food from restaurants and deliver outdoors. There is a higher technological barrier for outdoor self-driving robots than for indoor robots. Outdoor self-driving robots have to detect the subtle movements of not only cars and bicycles but also children and companion animals, and can only be commercialized when they operate stably even on bumpy roads and ever-changing weather conditions.

In November 2019, Woowa Brothers has conducted a month-long pilot test in Konkuk University campus to commercialize Dilly Drive. At the time, Dilly Drive has carried out more than 2,000 deliveries and improved its service quality. And from last June, Woowa Brothers has been working together with SK Telecom to conduct tests to build the control system crucial to outdoor delivery robot service.

The outdoor delivery robot service via Dilly Drive is going to be a new source of income for restaurant and café owners. Until now, customers were reluctant to make close-range deliveries due to delivery fees. Since robots carry out close-range deliveries at half the existing delivery fee, owners can now expect new sales revenue.

Woowa Brothers plans to keep enhancing the technological standard of outdoor delivery robot. For now, Dilly Drive can self drive from the restaurant to the first floor of an apartment, but it will be able to deliver right to the door in the first half of 2021.

Joseph Kim, Head of Robot Business Development at Woowa Brother said, "Outdoor delivery robot service includes a lot more obstacles that interrupt the robot’s drive, such as the road surface, obstacles, the weather, unexpected events, and so on. It can be commercialized when sophisticated technology and service know-hows come together." He also added that "Woowa Brothers will continue the development of delivery robot service for advanced delivery ecosystem."

Woowa Brothers operate South Korea’s most favored food delivery platform, "Baedal Minjok." SEMI Launches World’s First Flexible Hybrid Electronics Standards Technical Committee to Promote Industry Growth

HSINCHU, Taiwan, Aug. 18, 2020 — SEMI today announced the formation of a new standards committee that aims to develop global standards for flexible hybrid electronics (FHE) spanning design, materials, manufacturing, packaging and systems and to drive industry growth. Unanimously endorsed by members of the SEMI North America Regional Standards Committee (NARSC) and approved by the SEMI International Standards Committee (ISC), the technical committee is the world’s first to focus on flexible hybrid electronics standards. The SEMI Standards Flexible Hybrid Electronics Global Technical Committee has established its first chapter in Taiwan.

"The SEMI Standards Flexible Hybrid Electronics Global Technical Committee sets out to clear development bottlenecks facing the industry and establish unified measurement standards for flexible smart textile, automotive, Internet of Things (IoT) and related devices," said Terry Tsao, SEMI Chief Marketing Officer and president of SEMI Taiwan. "The Taiwan chapter looks forward to kicking off the development of international industry standards that help Taiwan’s FHE sector promote industry growth by reducing costs and increasing competition."

Initial work of the SEMI Standards Flexible Hybrid Electronics Global Technical Committee will include establishing working groups to draft measurement standards; building industry consensus on the need for materials, equipment and manufacturing standards; and developing standards to accelerate the introduction of related FHE technologies into diverse consumer end markets.

At the end of Q2 in 2020, Hytera has officially released its latest broadband products for emergency communication, and consolidated its leadership in professional communication in further. "The latest intelligent products were built on smart phone SoC with the advantages of high integration, super capacity, small form factor and low power consumption etc.," Dr. Guan explained "We insisted on the 4G and 5G mainstream technology directions on the waveform design even though it’s more complicated. Under the 3GPP specification, we developed the industry-leading cognitive mesh technology, which significantly improved the anti-jam ability, and the radio link became more robust and stable. The PNE380 is featured with small form factor, and the weight of 288g is almost the lightest mesh radio in the industry. PNE380 is designed as a brand-new handheld radio that is capable of offering voice, data and video multimedia service, and similar to the traditional DMR radios in dimensions, appearance as well as usage mode. 

According to Dr. Guan, the PNE380 performs great despite its small size and low weight. Firstly, the PNE380 can flexibly switch between the cellular mode and the mesh mode on customers’ demands, which enriches the application scenarios of the radio. Secondly, with dual-band design, the PNE380 can work over both U and L band, and supports auto frequency scanning and selection, thus offering much better anti-jamming performance than the traditional single-band radio. Thanks to the superior signal processing capability of SoC chipset as well as the advanced technology of 4G and 5G, the PNE380 offers outstanding demodulation performance. Despite 0.5 watt transmit power, the single-hop distance with HD video service on the ground approaches to 1.5 Km with typical antenna, even longer than the distance of some backpacked mesh radio with high transmit power.

The PNE380 is powered with ARM cores and multimedia accelerators, and supports Android OS and customized Apps on actual demands.

Also, it provides rich peripheral interfaces for the flexible functionality extension.

In addition to high definition video services, the PNE380 radio can also offer various voice services through the Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) software, such as trunking group call, multi-party conference and more. Dr. Guan said that Hytera will launch more smart mesh radios to further enrich product forms and improve the performance of the overall solution.

Dome Camera over Mesh Network

The dome cameras are widely used in fire, public security, energy and other industries to capture videos in emergencies. At present, dome cameras feed live video over public networks. However, in many emergency situations, public networks might be unavailable or congested, resulting in video backhaul failures. This adversely affects decision making for emergency.

To solve the problem, Hytera together with its partners embeds the mesh module into the pedestal of the dome camera. Therefore, when public networks are congested, the dome camera can backhaul video to the command center over mesh network, which significantly improves situational awareness and facilitates decision making.

The cost-effective and integrated pedestal can be easily installed and connected to PNE380, manpack radios, mobile radio, and other mesh products, which brings a more practical solution.

Adhesive Communication Box

The devices, no matter manpack, handheld, or wearable, will increase the burden on the first responders. As the first responders move or improperly carry the devices, the communication performance might be affected. Considering the emergency situations on the site, Hytera along with its partners has proposed the creative concept of adhesive communication box.

Dr. Guan showed an upcoming adhesive communication box that weights over 400 g. The box is easy to be recycled and pasted to the wall, light pole and other facilities by reusable universal pastes. Thus, customers give the box a vivid nickname "chewing gum". Featuring rich peripheral interfaces, the box also can be integrated with the AI edge computing module or Internet of Things (IoT) module, which further improves process capabilities and makes the box suitable for more scenarios.

5G technologies facilitate the development of the device-to-device (D2D) technologies, which have been widely applied to sectors such as the Internet of Vehicles (IOV) and Internet of unmanned intelligent devices. Dr. Guan pointed out, with the 5G-driven evolution of 3GPP-based mesh network technologies, Hytera will adhere to mainstream mesh network technologies and constantly upgrade mesh products. Based on unmanned drones and vehicles, 5G technologies shows great potential in the development of emergency communications toward the air-ground integration and man-machine coordination.
