HONOR should not be an unfamiliar name to smartphone users today. They made some of the best valued devices and they have been doing so for some years now. Most of their devices have been built around that philosophy anyway.
That is mostly since they have a vastly different target market in the industry. They mostly target the younger demographics. Their target demographics generally put more emphasis on delivered value than perceived value and branding.
Today is all about that as well with the HONOR 9A. In a way, the HONOR 9A is a little bit like an answer to Xiaomi’s Redmi devices and realme’s range of offerings. It may also be an answer to their bigger sister brand’s HUAWEI Nova and Y series really.
It does not pack the famous Kirin platform. Instead it is packing a MediaTek Helio P22 System on a Chip (SoC) to make it as affordable as possible. It is part of the reason that the HONOR could let you have one for just MYR 549. It does not come with one of those gimmicky, expensive AMOLED displays with no edges or notches as well.
It comes with a plain ol’ 6.3-inch dew-drop display with a small notch in its forehead and a lip that might look like a large tape compared to the svelte lines of flagship devices. That is okay though, it is still a Full HD display. They have done something to the speakers too to make it louder, a lot louder and better.
Of course, you cannot have everything with a lower price point. So at that price point you are looking at only up to 3GB of RAM and 64GB in storage. Still, it is not like you are being limited to just using your internal storage though. You can fit up to 512GB in MicroSD form.
You are not being compromised in terms of camera though. You still get a triple camera set up out the back with 13-Megapixel main shooter backed with a 5-Megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 2-Megapixel depth sensor. That is not all you are getting back in value though.
The biggest thing that you are getting within this device is a large battery. At 5,000 mAh, it is large enough to be your power bank for other smartphones. That is also why you can use it to reverse charge other devices. 5,000 mAh is still quite a big deal these days.
The HONOR 9A runs on Android 10 OS still, which means you are still getting a good Android experience from HONOR’s MagicUI 3.1. There is a small caveat of not having Google Apps on it or even Google Play Store. You do get AppGallery on it though, a good alternative if you do not mind some of the missing apps.
The HONOR 9A will be available in stores starting 6th July 2020. It will be up for pre-order online on the 26th June 2020 onward to 5th June 2020 though. If you do pre-order your HONOR 9A, you get up to MYR 218 worth of free gifts including an HONOR backpack and 15GB of HUAWEI Cloud subscription. As stated, price for the HONOR 9A is MYR 549. For more information on HONOR 9A you can visit their website.
Well, I wanted to put the title as “you can simply throw it anywhere you want”. While that is technically correct, we do not want to encourage violent behaviours or anyone trying to throw their notebooks at other people’s heads. Hence, the slightly tamer title. Still, we may not prevent golf sticks from landing on top of one. We do not condone that too.
Now we got over that, let us look at what Acer has launched here – the Acer Enduro series. No they are not bikes, they are still PCs. Notebook PCs to be specific and are made to take on the harshest of environments today. This sort of reminds us of the highly rugged notebook PCs that we saw a few years ago from Acer as well.
Still, this is an all-new line-up from Acer that is built for a highly underserved market segment. The devices in this series all gets MIL-810G certification and up to IP65 dust and water resistance rating. Now you see why I would say you can throw the device on anything.
In the series line-up you get form factors from as small as a tablet, to an all-day working powerhouse that is the N7. That is where we will start too, the top-of-the-line, made for front-line use Acer Enduro N7.
Acer Enduro N7
There is a problem that is largely unsolved in places that are dusty, humid, dry, hot, and cold in the extreme sense. I mean, when you go to the quarry, you hardly see computers outside their office, or within an enclosed cabin of a rig. There is a good reason for that.
While we have been able to send man to space, make electric cars go 500km on a single charge, and make LED patches as bright as the sun, we have not been able to make PCs more durable than our own skin. Yes, we are saying that PC parts, no matter how powerful, are fragile. You cannot put water on them unless you have a special coating, dust will amass more heat for parts, and anything out of place might short the board and kill everything. Yes, they are that fragile.
Which is why Acer answered with the Acer Enduro N7. The Acer Enduro N7, while sounding like the name of an adventure ready bike, is a small powerhouse you can take to Antarctica and conduct research freely even outside the base and research camps. It offers portability like no others.
Under bright sunlight is no issue for its 700-nits bright screen. You can still see details and comfortably work around under the harshest, coldest conditions from its 14-inch Full HD display. That, or watch a good movie if you have strong enough internet connection.
It packs a 10th Generation Intel Core i5 (up to) to really wring out everything out of whatever you might want to throw at it though, since you might need the computing power in these working conditions. Acer also managed to add some of their own security measures on both hardware and software level to protect any sensitive or important information you might put into it. Of course, a fingerprint sensor keeps everything inaccessible to the wrong people.
What is more amazing though is its battery. It has a big battery that is good for 10-hours of continuous use. Of course, that 10-hours is highly dependent on moisture, temperature, and requirements. If that is not enough, you can swap out the battery anytime. It is hot-swappable, which is something we have not seen for a long time, and also means that you can bring a couple of batteries with you for a long research trip. Built-in bridge battery also means that you can swap your battery without the device dying on you.
Acer Enduro N3
The Acer Enduro N3 is the one you take with you when you work plenty outdoors. It is made to really last your use case. They say event managers might want this. I would say that the MIL-STD 810G and IP53 dust and water resistance on this thing will allow even the most clumsy of people can appreciate it.
It is not too heavy and big too at just below 25mm and just below 2kg. That is quite amazing considering that you have a Corning Gorilla Glass protecting the Full HD display. The rugged notebook is no slouch though. It still packs up to a 10th Generation Intel Core i7, up to 32GB of RAM, and even up to an NVIDIA GeForce MX230 GPU and 512GB of SSD.
No, it is not made for rugged gaming in the harshest conditions, but why put yourselves through that for gaming? This is made to be outdoors. This is made to last 13-hours is stressful work conditions where accidents involving dropping your PCs or other hardware is highly possible and a less painful situation.
Acer Enduro T5 Tablet
When even more portability is required, nothing beats a light, touch-sensitive display on your hands. That is the Acer Enduro T5 Windows tablet. The 10-incher packs a powerful 7th Generation Core m3 processor that might be needed in managing a production line effectively and efficiently. Of course, this still needs to be tough. That is why it is built to MIL-STD 810G standards and IP65 dust and water resistant rated.
Attach it to the endless accessory option on Acer’s long list and you have yourselves the ultimate productivity machine that can take on anything in your factory. Please do not throw one in one of those heavy-duty shredders though. We are not going to be responsible for any destroyed machineries or hardware.
Acer Enduro T1
The Acer Enduro T1 comes in two sizes, a 10.1-inch tablet will bring Windows 10 experience from a touch screen to a notebook form factor in a single move. It still has the MIL-STD 810G and IP54 rating to make it a versatile and durable workhorse. Its power comes from an Intel Celeron processor paired with a 64GB storage to make it a quite work-around in any situation.
The 8-inch option is an Android tablet that can take on the world. When we say that, we mean it has MIL-STD 810G certification still along with IP54 rating. But it is made to be in all kinds of uncomfortable situations, including retail. In these day and age, you need to work with gloves, and so this thing also works with gloves. That also means it could be perfect in a hospital environment.
Prices and Availability
The Acer Enduro N3 will be available in North America region in August with prices starting at US$ 899. The EMEA markets will get it sooner in June or early July at prices going from EU€ 999. No word on Malaysia specifically just yet. But would you need that though?
The Acer Enduro N7, T5, and T1’s prices are yet to be revealed. There are also still no confirmation on when they will be available to the market, but we can safely say that they will be available within 2020. Information on the Acer Enduro series is available on their website though.

Dell’s gaming laptops have been the company’s offering for those who want gaming level performance but can’t jump for the Alienware line up. The Dell G line up has inherited many of the award winning designs that have made Dell laptops a force to be reckoned with.
The new Dell G7 Gaming laptops are pushing the boundaries when it comes to aesthestics as Dell continues to refine the chassis of the G7. This year, the G7 sheds its pounds for a more thin, svelte silhouette completed by a customizable RGB strip. The once thick laptop comes in at only 18.3mm thin. Aside from the thinner silhouette, the Dell G7 Gaming comes with a Mineral Black finish with iridescent silver accents that allows you to go from gamer to corporate professional without batting an eye.
The refreshed gaming laptop is going to be packing a punch when it comes to performance. Packing the 10th Generation Intel Core i processors ranging all the way up to the i9, the G7 is built for performance both in gaming and heavy workloads. On the graphics side, it’s equipped with NVIDIA’s GeForce graphics cards ranging from the GTX1650 Ti to the RTX2070 with Max-Q design.
Like all things Dell, the G7 comes with options for it’s display which include a UHD 4K OLED display with 60Hz refresh rate, a FHD 1080p antiglare LED display with 300Hz and a FHD 1080p antiglare LED display with 60Hz refresh. It supports up to 32GB of RAM with options of 8GB and 16GB out of the box. Storage options range from 128GB to 1TB. Of course, these are PCIe M.2 SSDs.
Connectivity wise, the Dell G7 gaming supports HDMI 2.0, USB 3.2 Gen 1, PowerShare and more. It has support for up to Bluetooth 5.0 and WiFi 6 with Killer Wireless. All of these beefed out specs will be powered by either a 56WHr batter or a 86WHr battery.
Pricing & Availability
The Dell G7 Gaming Laptop will be available starting June 29, 2020 with prices starting at USD$1,429.99 (MYR 6,113.62) worldwide. There are two models that will be released: Dell G7 15 and Dell G7 17. The main difference between the two is the size of the display.
Malaysia will be getting the Dell G7 15 (7500) starting 14 July 2020 for MYR6,499.
Acer’s Swift series has always been one of the forerunners of the thin and light segment of laptop. The Swift 5 has become Acer’s top selling model in the series and the one that Acer has been putting their muscle behind. Just last year, the Swift 5 was refreshed with a new, thinner design; this year, the company is raising the bar with even more features and design tweaks that make the laptop even sleeker and more appealing; coming in at less than 1kg and under 15mm in thickness.
The new Swift 5 comes with a few design tweaks that give the laptop some thoughtful improvements. While the over all design hearkens back to the Swift 5 of last year, the new refresh comes with a new hinge design which lifts the laptop ever so slightly to increase the airflow. The increased airflow allows the components to be cooled more efficiently as more heat is able to be dissipated. The display on the new Swift is a 14-inch, Full HD IPS panel with a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels. The screen is touch enabled and also comes with options for an antimicrobial coating and Corning Gorilla Glass. The bezels of the Swift 5 are slim which allows the display to cover a whopping 90% of the upper clam of the laptop.
The biggest change with the Swift 5 is the inclusion of Intel’s brand new generation of processors with their new Xe architecture. The new Xe architecture ups the ante when it comes to performance and power efficiency. It has a new 7nm process which allows the processors to draw more performance with less power. Of particular interest, is the increase in graphical performance from the integrated graphics component of the processor. However, if you need even more graphical prowess, the Swift 5 also comes with versions with a discreet NVIDIA GeForce MX350 graphics processor.
The refreshed Swift 5 comes with the same all day battery life that Acer has been touting since last year. However, this year, you’ll be able to get up to 4 hours of use with 30 minutes of charge. The increased power efficiency of the next generation Intel cores also allows it a slightly longer battery life, allowing it to be a trusty companion when it comes to working on the go.
Pricing & Availability
The new Swift 5 will be available starting in October 2020 with prices starting at USD$999 (MYR4,271.30) in North America, EUR 1,099 (MYR5,323.54) in Europe, Middle East and Asia (EMEA); and RMB 6,999 (MYR4,238.50) in China.
Specification will vary according to region. The Swift 5 will be available in Mist Green and Safari Gold.

Fitness is a journey of a thousand steps and it usually begins with the first one. If you’re like me, that journey usually gets started and then quickly falls by the sidelines when visible results begin to plateau. I was pretty adamant in losing weight this round and then came a little angel who told me to try using the new Fitbit Charge 4 and passed me one for review.
The Fitbit Charge 4 was released not too long ago and comes with a very minor, but significant update to the Charge 3 – GPS tracking. This isn’t the first time I was using fitness bands or smartwatches; in fact, I use a Galaxy Watch daily and was using the Charge 3 before. But after a while, they became watches more than fitness trackers; a problem I’m pretty sure many others face. That brings up the question – why not buy a regular analogue watch? So, this time, I decided to pay closer attention to the features that the Fitbit Charge 4 offers and figure out how to effectively use them to help achieve my goals.
Setting up the Fitbit Charge 4 & Making Sense of Metrics
As always, the first thing you do with a new fitness tracker is to pair it with your phone. Like all other Fitbit devices, I plugged in the Charge 4 to get things powered up and started. I was pleasantly greeted by a smile and a prompt to continue the setup process on my smartphone – a Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. The setup process was pretty straight forward but I was more impressed with the ease of setup. In the past, with the Charge 3 and even the Versa before, the setup process was rather painful with the devices not being detected and even disconnecting midway. The Charge 4 was a breeze, no issues at all.
Once it was setup, I glanced through the app looking at the many features which come in the Charge 4. You’ve got everything from the basic tracking of steps to sleep tracking and even GPS tracking. Fitbit has put a lot into making sure that you have everything you need to quantify your fitness journey in the Charge 4. However, it was quite daunting to be facing metric after metric after metric after metric. It wouldn’t be too farfetched to say that many people wouldn’t be able to make heads or tail of the many metrics that the Charge 4 can track. After some research and looking into the metrics, I realised that the biggest challenge any fitness newbie would face is the eventual plateau which I mentioned in the beginning. So, looking at the metrics that the Charge 4 could give me, I decided that the best thing to do is work towards overcoming that plateau.
The Charge 4 is able to track sleep, steps taken, distance travelled while walking, heart rate, calories burnt and a new metric called the Active Zone minutes. Other metrics such as weight, calories consumed, and hydration can also be measured but involve manually inputting the data into the app. With all of these available, I looked into creating a baseline for myself before I decide to make changes. After monitoring my metrics for about three days, I realised that I may not need to use all the metrics available – at least not initially. I looked at which areas I need to improve and realised that, for me at least, I needed to start looking into getting better sleep, being less sedentary and getting enough hydration.
The Fitbit App’s heart rate monitor screen helps you monitor your fitness level with you resting heart rate
Fitbit’s new Active Zone minutes feature allows you to set how many active minutes you want to cover a day
The Fitbit App also gives you weekly summaries and suggestions which can help you do better
This narrowed down my focus to three main metrics: sleep, steps taken or active zone and hydration. With my main focus set, I had the trusty Charge 4 to help me make small changes that can help me with my fitness.
Using the Charge 4 to Make Small, Meaningful Changes for Better Health
Using the Fitbit Charge 4 to track your steps, sleep and active zone is pretty straight forward – just wear the Fitbit. So, wear the Charge 4 I did. Keeping up with the metrics is a lot of work. You have to open the app to check up on yourself on a daily basis. However, the array of widgets that the Fitbit app helps ever so much in helping you keep track and making changes.
Setting Goals within the app will help with making meaningful changes to help you achieve your fitness goals

For me, because one of my goals was to get enough sleep, the daily reminders and nudges to prepare for bed were a godsend. It has allowed me to get into a wind-down routine and put away my tech when the nudges come. This has actually translated into better sleep overall. However, – and this is a BIG one – the sleep tracking has been hit or miss for me. So, I’ve been using my smartwatch to get a more accurate picture of how I’ve been sleeping on a daily basis.
The Fitbit Charge 4 has also been breaking up my daily 10,000 steps into smaller, more achievable goals throughout the day. To help me achieve this goal, it nudges me every hour to get up and get some steps in. Believe it or not? This small adjustment also helps me get more productive throughout the day. I’ve been able to get more done in a day than before without feeling drained midway.
Fitbit’s sleep monitoring screen gives you a lot of useful information when it works. Otherwise it’s just a missed opportunity
Monitoring is easy with the overview the app gives you but you have to open the app to get it.
The hardest adjustment for me is the monitoring of my water intake. Since it’s done manually, I have to remember to turn on the phone and record the amount of water I’m consuming. As you can tell, this also means that I might miss recording a few glasses of water here and there. But, more hydration is a good thing.
Fitness Isn’t Just about the Aesthetics
Overall, my first week with the Charge 4 has thought me one big lesson – fitness isn’t just about looking good. It’s about the small changes that eventually lead to being more “fit” overall; aesthetics is just a result of you feeling better about yourself and overall, your body coping better with the stresses you face on a day to day basis. As the Malay saying goes, “sikit-sikit, lama-lama menjadi bukit” ; roughly translated: bit by bit, over time it will become a hill.
While the Charge 4 isn’t a magically genie that grants wishes, it’s given a health-science degree holding, obese person a new, quantifiable approach to dealing with the extra kilos. If you’re looking at the scale continuously, you’ll get demotivated over time especially when the reading starts to nag the same digits over and over again. Start with small changes like getting enough sleep and drinking enough water – the rest will come naturally. Getting the Charge 4 or something similar that fits your needs and budget will also help you get there.
