Automated Farming: XAG Introduces Rice Seeding Drone to Mitigate Labour Shortage

GUANGZHOU, China, May 27, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — With the farming population decreasing and growing older, the global food system now faces great uncertainty especially when the covid-19 pandemic exacerbates labour shortages. Its potential havoc can somehow be avoided by the integration of automation technologies. To overhaul the labour-intensive rice farming industry, XAG is scaling up drone applications in China that enable night-time seeding at peak period.

Drones Sowing Seeds for Aging Farmers

On 13 April 2020, XAG organised the world’s first-ever rice direct seeding demonstration on the comparison between manual broadcasting and drone seeding. The operation was conducted in China’s ‘Happy Farms’, one of the largest modern agricultural parks as well as smart agriculture demonstration site in Guangdong province. Two workers were invited to spread 5kg of rice seeds, walking slowly through the waterlogged paddy field with their feet swamped in the mud. This was a laborious and lengthy process, which took them 25 minutes to cover 1,200 square metres of land.

Then XAG’s drone followed a pre-programmed route and dispensed rice seeds from the air. With JetSeed granule spreading system, it finished the same amount of work in only two minutes. One XAG agricultural drone can seed 50,000 square metres of land per hour, which would otherwise take 50 to 60 field workers to complete. Happy Farms has just introduced XAG’s autonomous drones to replace manual labour for seeding, fertilisation, and crop spraying.

Many other farms in China, however, are still haunted by the problem of labour dependence, which has increased their vulnerability to the aging farming population. According to National Bureau of Statistics, China’s rural population has substantially reduced by 23% in the past two decades, while those aged over 55 constitute one third of the agricultural workforce. When the older generation of farmers retire and young people pour into the cities for better employment, the future of food supply seems unsecure if counting on manpower.

Direct Seeded Rice Planted at Night

Direct seeded rice (DSR) refers to the process of sowing seeds directly into the fields without nursery cultivation and transplantation. As a more sustainable alternative to conventional transplanting, it avoids deteriorating soil health and intensive water use. However, DSR can only be conducted either by hand or use of large ground machinery in the past.

Unlike the large-scale agriculture economies, most Asian countries with rice as their staple crop cannot resort to large automated machinery such as driverless tractors, because of the complex terrains, small size of many farms and high costs. This is where the nimble, agile drones can unleash their full potential to empower the rice farmers toiling on the land. For example, XAG’s agricultural drone can not only be utilised to spray crops to ward off pests and diseases, but it can also distribute rice seeds directly into the paddy fields without seedling transplant.

JetSeed is an intelligent granule spreading system mounted on the bottom of XAG agricultural UAS, to endow the drone with new function of direct rice seeding. After simple parameter set-up on app, it generates high-speed airflow to project proper amount of seeds accurately into the targeted topsoil. Such mechanism is designed to maintain optimum spacing and uniform plant density. Compared with manual broadcasting and traditional sowing machine, drone seeding proves to achieve higher seedling rate and lodging resistance as important factors of a bumper harvest.

Chinese farmers also start embracing night-time drone seeding to resolve severe labour shortfall during the busy planting season. Li Qisheng, a drone operator in Anhui, China, has turned on night operation mode this May to meet the increasing demands for autonomous direct seeding. “There are two major advantages of seeding at night by drones. First, aerial spreading is more precise and even after sunset when it is usually less windy than during daytime. Second, by extending the operational period, it helps farmers avoid missing the planting season.” XAG agricultural UAS is the only drone in the industry which can operate safely days and nights.

Stabilise Food Security under COVID-19 Pandemic

XAG has made a great leap forward by taking drone seeding technology from experimental stage to commercial adoption across China’s main rice planting areas. Since April 2019, XAG’s drone direct seeding solutions have been applied to over 650 million square metres of rice fields in China’s 11 provinces. It is helping both smallholders and large farm owners to resolve common challenges such as operational inefficiency, aging crisis, and shortage of field workers.

When COVID-19 loomed over the spring planting season, XAG has mobilised farmers to adopt seeding drones as prompt response to rural workforce shortages. Despite the economic disruption, China’s agriculture has witnessed a robust performance with 3.5% year-on-year increase in the added value of the planting industry, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. To feed 1.4 billion people with enough staple food, China this year plans to cultivate 4.6 million hectares of early rice, raising by 0.2 million hectares from last year.

However, although the global food system remains well functioning at this moment, the lack of agricultural workforce might undermine future production and supply of food, warned by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Many countries are now struggling to mitigate their labour-deficit in seasonal migrant workers, for example, 80,000 farming jobs needs to be filled while that number in Germany reaches to 300,000. With such urgent labour challenges, the shift to automation, powered by smart agtech such as drone, becomes more imperative in the coronavirus age.

AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000 – Limitations on Notebooks? What is That?

We saw ASUS launching a bunch of AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000 processor powered products two weeks ago. They were not the only ones jumping the gun before AMD themselves make their products known to the South East Asian market though. Acer did too with a new Acer Swift 3 powered by an AMD Ryzen 5-4500U.

Today, we see even more products that is supposed to be powered by AMD’s line up of the more powerful AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000 series CPUs. But a little bit about the AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000 series before we look into the line-up we are hopefully getting from manufacturers. They are more than just an upgrade from the Ryzen Mobile 3000 series line-up.

Source: AMD

AMD has been on a roll since they started with the Ryzen platform in the CPU world. They caused a little bit of a stir in the PC building community with the Ryzen platform and architecture. The AMD Ryzen platform is also the first CPU platform to introduce 7nm processing into the fold of PC CPUs. The competition is still at 12nm mind you, even today. Smaller, in this case, is better.

While the previous AMD Ryzen platforms were playing a little bit of catch up with the best that Intel has to offer, the 3000-generation changed that. This generation of CPUs also comes in a Mobile guise, a CPU designed for notebook PCs. That goes directly against Intel’s U and H series CPUs too.

The AMD Ryzen Mobile 3000 CPUs proved to people that notebook PCs do not have to be limited in power for work and gaming. They can be reasonably competitive in power while maintaining mobility and portability. All this also while costing less than both its competition and its desktop counterparts. Of course, being a mobile processor there are some compromises to ensure that battery life is sustained, heat controlled, and power consumption curbed.

Source: AMD

Still, the AMD Ryzen Mobile 3000 CPUs is prove that AMD knows what they are doing and that they are back to take the world by storm. In plenty of benchmarks, they have the upper edge on their competition. They are also fitting higher core counts in a single CPU than ever before, giving the PCs more power and more capabilities in both gaming and productivity spectrum. In most of the cases for productivity, the AMD Ryzen Mobile 3000 proves to be more powerful than its direct competition at that time. There is some lack of pace in gaming generally, but they are not as far apart as night and day.

The new AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000 is a statement that AMD can make even better processors than what was thought possible. The new processors are 7nm manufactured processors. This makes them the most advanced notebook PC CPUs around today.

Of course, just having more advanced stuff is not enough. The new processors should also be more powerful. That has been delivered with the AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000 series. They pack significantly more power than before as well. That was evident in their benchmarks against the older generation competing processors and against the newer generation ones as well.

There is a case of “win some, lose some” here though. In most games though, the AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000 series is now about on par or slightly more powerful than the current outgoing line-up of their competition’s 12nm CPU. In the cases of productivity software like Blender, or Adobe Premiere Pro, the AMD’s are still clear winners. The Ryzen 5 in the 4000 generation can also apparently easily processor and edit 4K files, a far cry from the Ryzen 5 of the 3000-generation AMD Ryzen Mobiles.

There are more numbers to explain the improvements they made to the new AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000. They are very good points too, in terms of what they have improved. We are not going to explain what each number means though. What you need to now about the new AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000 series is that you should really consider it as a contender in your shopping list if you are looking for a new notebook PC.

The new AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000 series is more powerful than ever whilst being a lot more efficient in power consumption. On paper, the competition might fare better in power consumption, but there are hardly any PCs that can match its quoted power consumption figure as well, so we always take that with a pinch of salt. The new AMD processors for notebook PCs are also about on par or slightly more powerful than its competition technically and they are slightly more future proof. The most important thing though, is that they are more affordable than the competition.

We have seen offerings from ASUS for AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000 powered rigs. We have seen one device from Acer that is powered by an AMD Ryzen 5-4500U CPU as well in Malaysia. Dell is fitting the potent CPU in their Dell Gaming G15, which is yet to be released in Malaysia. Lenovo’s 500 series Legion notebook PCs are also touted to come with the latest AMD CPU this year. We are expecting to see some consumer level budget notebook PC from HP and of course MSI will not miss out on the gaming boat with their offering to be revealed later in the year. There are no confirmations on the products that they teased. We only know that ASUS has already brought in their line-up of gaming notebooks and productivity notebook PCs with AMD CPUs.

HEFEI, China, May 27, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Sungrow, the global leading inverter solution supplier for renewables, announced recently that the Company’s energy storage system (ESS) had received the UL9540 certificate issued by TÜV Rheinland for North American C&I energy storage market, demonstrating that this competitive ESS solution meets the comprehensive and stringent local requirements in system safety and compliance, and forecasting more installations that it will be involved in.

UL9540 Compliance Certificate for C&I Energy Storage System ST556kWh-250UD
UL9540 Compliance Certificate for C&I Energy Storage System ST556kWh-250UD

As one of the world’s largest energy storage markets, North America holds the most rigid standards for the energy storage system. The ESS ST556kWh-250UD is completely in compliance with UL9540, UL9540A, and the updated National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) criteria NFPA 855, NFPA 70, which are well recognized & authoritative proof of system with high quality, safety and reliable performance.

Optimized to the growing demand for C&I energy storage market in the North America, Sungrow rolled out this all-in-one solution in September 2019 with competitive system design for the best in class energy density and low LCOE, consisting of the stellar PCS (Power Conversion System) SC60HV, lithium batteries, energy management system, HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning), the fire suppression system and more devices.

More specifically, equipped with 556kWh of Samsung SDI Mega E3 lithium batteries, the system can be of higher power density and cost-saving. Featuring the optimized three-level technology, the energy conversion efficiency of the PCS can be higher. Also, allowing up to six units of the system to operate in parallel on the AC side makes the configuration more flexible.

Safety is the most important parameter in many customers’ minds. The E-stop function enables fast acting and arc protection for better safety management. Housed in an outdoor cabinet, the PCS and batteries are designed compartmentally. The battery compartment integrates HVAC overhead to guarantee that the battery works at a constant ambient temperature, ensuring longer battery life and safety.

Furthermore, the outdoor cabinet design is more aesthetic in appearance and ideally address the demands for C&I applications. With a high anti-corrosion capacity of C5, the system can be resilient to harsh conditions, like costal and high-pollution industrial areas.

“The UL9540 certified solution ST556kWh-250UD with compact design, small footprint and optimized thermal performance, guarantees minimized system operation overhead and warranty claim hassles in response to the high demand of peak shaving, frequency regulation and demand charge management,” said Hank Wang, President of Sungrow Americas. “We are delighted to bring forth more innovations to the North American storage market together with the comprehensive technical-support, sales and after-sale service.”

Tech & Tonic Episode 14 – Can’t Wait for AMD Ryzen 4000 Desktop series!

In this episode of Tech & Tonic, we spoke a little bit about AMD’s newest version of their Ryzen 4000. We are reviewing one of their mobile versions in a brand new ASUS TUF Gaming notebook PC. They are going to launch a new desktop series of the Ryzen 4000 CPUs today, so we are excited. Stay tuned for our review though.

Last week also we saw some new developments from Xiaomi. Xiaomi launched their brand new MIUI 12 based on Android 10. There is no new Android just yet, so while there are some minimal changes to the User Interface (UI), MIUI 12 is more of a cosmetic overhaul to modernise the interface.

Speaking of an electronics company that started with smartphones and now doing smart home products. HONOR is looking to rival Xiaomi in that space. They just launched new 8K TVs for not very much money. They also launched a wireless vacuum, electric toothbrush and a bladeless fan. Of course, the highlight of their launch last week was their new HONOR MagicBook with Intel’s 10th generation Core i7 and NVIDIA GeForce MX350.

Big Data and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

From Data 1.0 to Data 2.0

According to estimates by the IDC (International Data Corporation), the total amount of data in the world will grow more than five times from 2018 to 2025 – a veritable explosion of data in just seven years. And this growth is expected to continue. Toshiba believes that the amount of data created from the physical world – things like factory equipment and transportation systems – will far exceed the data created in the cyber business.

With the company’s offerings and involvement in point-of-sales (POS) systems, industrial machinery and social infrastructure, Toshiba can transcribe the data from the physical world, feed it into cyberspace, and then combine the new data with already existing cyber data to create something of value.

The company is focused on aggregating behavioral data of consumers in the physical world, and with their permission or after anonymizing the data, give value created back to the consumer. Various service providers could provide different customer offerings according to the data gathered.

An example is the ‘Smart Receipt’ developed by Toshiba TEC Corporation, a Smart Receipt system that digitizes paper receipts that customers would receive when they make payments at stores. Depending on how it is applied, it could even be used as a tool for regional vitalization.

Toshiba Data is considering to offer management support to medical institutions. By collaborating with other providers, Toshiba aims to help medical institutions to analyze patients’ data and identify various pre-symptomatic diseases for health monitoring purposes. Overcoming challenges, Toshiba Data is committed to create an ecosystem where everyone can reap the benefits of data.
