NEC Thailand conducts POC for elderly care in preparation for an aging society

BANGKOK, Nov. 9, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — NEC Corporation (Thailand) Ltd. (NEC Thailand) has conducted a POC for elderly care in preparation for an aging society. The POC features a range of technological solutions designed to improve elderly care across Asia. The announcement follows a successful month-long trial in June at an elderly care facility in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand.

During the POC, NEC Thailand’s “Mimamori” system directly supported healthcare professionals in quickly creating an efficient, high-quality framework for care, rehabilitation, and contactless prevention of high-risk incidents with the deployment of intuitive solutions.

NEC Thailand’s findings proved that the digitalisation of operations significantly increased the effectiveness and efficiency of staff duties and improved the quality of care for the elderly. For example, workloads for the Care Manager and direct caregivers reduced by 36% and 48%, respectively. This immediately increased staff satisfaction, enhanced the team’s ability to prepare care plans, and made the handover process seamless. The digitalisation also improved the care home’s sustainability goals by reducing paper waste by 70%.

Mr. Ichiro Kurihara, President, NEC Thailand, said, “New technologies and medical treatments are enabling people to live longer than every before.  With an ageing population however, limited access to quality, long-term care is a reality, and staffing constraints is a constant challenge for care homes. NEC is proud of this Mimamori project, the seamless provision of smart solutions that it enabled, and its optimisation of staff based on residents’ needs, while maintaining the much-needed human interaction.”

Digital transformation of caregiver services

Mimamori is a combination of several applications and technologies. Under this POC, caregivers and care managers were given an online care plan manager that digitised existing paper-based records. Residents’ medical data could then be accessed and updated in real-time, while shift changes amongst caregivers was streamlined.

Meanwhile, family members also enjoyed transparency through the Mimamori app, where they could track the health of their loved ones, be alerted to any changes in their condition and have full access to their care plans.

Critical functions rolled out under the Mimamori project included a medical alert system with fall detection sensors installed in bedrooms and bathrooms. “We discovered that fall detection is a big issue in care facilities,” said Mr. Kurihara. The use of NEC sensors is cutting the staff’s time in responding to falls by half and activating immediate medical help when a resident has a fall.

The technology utilizes 4D imaging radar technology, a seamless and intuitive solution, which prompts quick action from staff and reduces stress amongst residents. “We are aware of challenges faced with wearable technology amongst seniors. By installing sensors, we are providing a contactless, dignified alternative and in times of emergencies, medical support and response have become immediate.”

Even greater value will come when Mimamori expands beyond elderly care facilities to incorporate a full spectrum of solutions and support for health teleconsultants, emergency services, and municipal agencies. The objective is not just to enrich elderly patient care, but to improve the overall quality of services for healthcare professionals and family members.

“Eventually, I envisage Mimamori evolving with a wider range of tools and innovations to include elderly clients living at home, as a personalised virtual caregiving service for independent, high-quality support and deployment of rapid and effective responses,” said Mr. Kurihara.

China Matters’ Feature: How was an ancient Chinese village transformed by art?

BEIJING, Nov. 8, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Gejia village, located in a remote mountainous area of Ningbo, east China’s Zhejiang Province, has a history of more than 1,300 years. This place was once a small, underdeveloped village largely devoid of any industry.

The collective income of Gejia village was a dismal 120,000 yuan back in 2019, but rose to more than 500,000 yuan in 2021. What made a village change in just three years?

Professor Cong Zhiqiang from Renmin University of China (RUC) is the man behind this tremendous change. In 2019, the local government launched a campaign called “rural revitalization through art,” aiming to boost the local economy by developing art-related industries. As a professor at the School of Artsat RUC, Cong Zhiqiang was invited to instruct this campaign.

However, the idea of a rural Chinese village embracing the world of art seemed a bit far-fetched. The locals didn’t accept the idea at first. They saw art as neither meaningful nor lucrative. So Professor Cong stayed in Gejia village for weeks, working and communicating with the locals.

Finally, he found a new way to help the villagers make the best use of art – keeping costs low, developing their own skills, and utilizing local materials. With the support of the local government, Cong not only helped villagers transform abandoned buildings and public spaces, he also exposed locals to business opportunities.

To find out how locals’ lives are changed by the campaign, Italian host Rachele Longhi travels to Gejia village. “The entire village is filled with breath-taking scenery,”said Longhi. She met with different villagers that found their new goals towards art: the wooden roses workshop owner; Yuan Xiaoxian,a housewife-turned handmade dolls shop owner, and the campaign initiator Professor Cong.

“They are more open-minded, inclusive, and more willing to share with others,”Cong said. “This is the power of art.”

With the encouragement from the local government and Professor Cong, villagers in Gejia have begun to embrace new ideas and changes, and are filled with excitement for what’s to come in the future. The artistic village now boasts more than 40 art sharing spaces built by the locals, attracting over 30,000 visitors and generating over five million yuan in tourism income in 2021. What’s more, the success of “rural revitalization through art” in Gejia has inspired other Chinese villages and motivated residents to learn from their experiences.

CGTN: How to protect wetland and build a shared future for all life on Earth?

BEIJING, Nov. 6, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — More than a billion people across the world depend on wetlands for their livelihoods – that’s about one in eight people on Earth. However, these lands are Earth’s most threatened ecosystem.

According to the United Nations, 35 percent of the world’s wetlands have disappeared since 1970.

Themed “Wetlands Action for People and Nature,” the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP14) to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is being held from November 5 to 13, with its main venue in China’s Wuhan, and a parallel session in Geneva, Switzerland, in both in person and online formats.

This meeting gives us an opportunity to raise awareness, strengthen cooperation, and scale up wetlands action across the world, Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed on Saturday when delivering his speech via video at the opening ceremony of the events.

Xi vowed China will pursue modernization of harmony between humanity and nature, promote high-quality development in the wetlands conservation cause and promote international exchanges and cooperation.

What China has done?

With four percent of the world’s wetlands, China has met the diverse needs of one-fifth of the world’s population for wetland production, living, ecology and culture.

In his speech, Xi noted that historic achievements have been made in wetlands conservation in China. The country has increased the area of wetlands to 56.35 million hectares, put in place a protection system and enacted a Wetlands Conservation Law, according to Xi.

Since it acceded to the Ramsar Convention in 1992, China has established and improved its legal framework for wetland protection as well as systems for protection management, project planning, and investigation and monitoring. It has also fulfilled its obligations under the convention and continued to expand international cooperation in this regard.

The central government has spent 19.8 billion yuan (about $2.73 billion) on over 4,100 projects to advance wetland protection and restoration across the country since 2003.

China now has 64 wetlands of international importance and 29 wetlands of national importance, as well as 901 national wetland parks.

Last month, China released a plan for wetland protection for the 2022-2030 period, aiming to increase its wetland protection rate to 55 percent by 2025, while increasing the number of wetlands of international importance and national importance by 20 and 50, respectively.

The Chinese president also introduced China’s further plan of incorporating 11 million hectares of its wetlands into the country’s national park system, adding a national wetlands conservation plan and major conservation projects will be implemented.

Path to global ecological conservation

The Chinese president Saturday urged efforts to build global consensus on prizing wetlands, advance the global process of wetlands conservation and enhance people’s well-being globally by leveraging the role of wetlands.

China will build an international mangrove center in Shenzhen and supports the convening of a conference of the World Coastal Forum, Xi announced.

According to China’s white paper on biodiversity conservation, the country has provided support for more than 80 developing countries in biodiversity conservation under the framework of South-South cooperation.

China has also made ecological cooperation a key part of Belt and Road cooperation. In 2021, China launched “the Belt and Road” Green Development Partnership Initiative with 31 partner countries, calling for international cooperation to achieve a green and sustainable economic recovery and promote low-carbon, resilient and inclusive economic growth post-epidemic.

Moreover, China has taken an active part in international conferences and activities, including the United Nations Summit on Biodiversity and the Leaders’ Summit on Climate, giving impetus to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

These cases are a microcosm of China’s concrete steps to promote global ecological cooperation, with the notion of building a shared future for all life on Earth as the underpinning.

Building a ChinaAfrica community with a shared future

In 2013, during his visit to Tanzania, Xi put forth the guiding principles of China’s policy toward Africa, namely sincerity, real results, affinity and good faith, which have since become China’s basic policy on pursuing solidarity and cooperation with other developing countries.

Xi told Hassan that under the new circumstances, the sound development of ChinaTanzania relations not only serves the common and long-term interests of the two countries but also is of great significance to building a ChinaAfrica community with a shared future in the new era.

China is ready to create new opportunities for Africa with its new development, take infrastructure as the guide, strengthen cooperation in trade, investment and financing, and foster new drivers of ChinaAfrica cooperation, he said.

FOCAC is an effective platform and multilateral mechanism for China and African countries to conduct collective consultations and carry out pragmatic cooperation.

Since the establishment of FOCAC, Chinese enterprises have built more than 10,000 kilometers of railways, nearly 100,000 kilometers of roads, nearly 1,000 bridges, nearly 100 ports and a large number of hospitals and schools in Africa, said Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Chen Mingjian during a conference on ChinaAfrica cooperation through FOCAC in Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam in October.

In 2021, ChinaAfrica trade volume was $254.2 billion, and China’s stock of direct investment in Africa exceeded $56 billion, 25 times and 100 times that of 2000, when the forum was established, respectively, according to the Chinese envoy.
