Hong Kong Palace Museum: Narrating the charm of the Orient

BEIJING, June 24, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — A news report by China.org.cn on Hong Kong Palace Museum:

Good news: Hong Kong is welcoming its very own palace museum.

The Hong Kong Palace Museum, which is set to open to the public on July 2, is the first museum jointly established with the Palace Museum in Beijing outside the Chinese mainland.

At the opening, a total of 914 treasures from the Palace Museum will be on display, among them, 166 are first-class cultural relics classified as national treasures. The blockbuster exhibition “The Making of Masterpieces: Chinese Painting and Calligraphy from the Palace Museum” will display 35 classic works from the Jin (265-420), Tang (618-907), Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties. This exhibition is the largest of its kind outside the Chinese mainland within the past 15 years. A range of fine Chinese ceramics from different dynasties will also be presented in Hong Kong for the first time.

Even more exciting is that the Hong Kong Palace Museum will offer exhibitions that have not been seen in the Palace Museum. For example, one of the opening exhibitions “Grand Gallop: Art and Culture of the Horse” will showcase more than 100 horse-related cultural relics from the Palace Museum and 13 renowned horse-themed artworks on loan from the Louvre Museum in France, allowing Eastern and Western civilizations to shine brightly together.

The Palace Museum has long been fascinating for people in Hong Kong. Over the years, the museum has conducted various exchanges and cooperation with the special administrative region. A host of splendid exhibitions on Qing dynasty imperial costumes, cultural relics from the Hall of Mental Cultivation in the Forbidden City, and valuable clocks and watches have been displayed in Hong Kong’s museums, each attracting a sea of visitors.

Additionally, Hong Kong was once a center for the production of palace-based TV dramas, and such dramas produced on the Chinese mainland also attracted high ratings in Hong Kong. Given the rich elements from the Palace Museum shown in these dramas, it is fair to say that the museum constitutes a common cultural symbol of the two regions.

It is based on this affection for and recognition of culture that the Hong Kong Palace Museum has been jointly established and the Palace Museum has made an exception in loaning out items from its precious collection on a long-term basis. This enables Chinese people both on the Chinese mainland and in Hong Kong to jointly share and protect the cultural treasures spanning 5,000 years of history.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland. Having traditionally played the role of a center for international finance, shipping and trade, Hong Kong is now endowed with a new status as a center of Sino-foreign cultural and artistic exchanges. The founding of the Hong Kong Palace Museum has enriched the region’s cultural heritage. Hong Kong, rooted as it is in Chinese traditions, will not only retain its allure as a vibrant metropolis where East meets West, but also play a bigger role in promoting in-depth dialogue over diverse values as well as exchanges and mutual learning among outstanding civilizations.

We are looking forward to the official opening of the Hong Kong Palace Museum, where everyone can savor the glamour of Eastern culture interpreted by a more glorious “Pearl of the Orient.”

ASUS Launches New ExpertBooks for 2022 Powered by Intel’s 12th Generation CPUs

Working on the go is a thing, there is no denying that. Working from home is also a huge thing now, since the pandemic hits in 2020. In this kind of environment, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) culture is stronger than ever. You have the choice of bringing your own laptop for work, you even use your own smartphone at work and for work. It is a headache to the IT team though.

If you are working as a part of the IT workforce in your own company, you want to limit the number of foreign devices accessing your system and network at work. You want standardized devices that you can monitor and service quickly. At the other end though, you want a device that is powerful enough and sleek enough to make it look like you mean business in the boardroom.

You get a standardized set of laptops for business use case of course. ASUS has some new ones for 2022. Specifically, they have the ExpertBook series for 2022.

ASUS ExpertBook B7 Flip

  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 01
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 15
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 14
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 13
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 12
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 11
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 10

  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 08
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 07
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 06
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 05
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 04
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 03
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B7 FLIP LAUNCH 02

We start with the most premium option of the bunch, the ExpertBook B7 Flip. It packs Intel’s latest 12th Generation Core i7 CPU for good measure. To ensure that it will multitask like a champion you can spec it with up to 64GB of RAM. To ensure you never run out of space, you have up to 2TB SSD. To ensure you get an entire day of work, the ExpertBook B7 Flip has a quoted battery life of 11 hours.

All of these is packed in a body that weighs just below 1.5kg. While that might not sound all that light, you must remember that the ExpertBook B7 Flip is a convertible laptop that can also quickly turn into a tablet. It is not a light tablet by any means in that case, but it also carries a large battery and proper keyboard to work with. Additionally, the shell that encases all the powerful internals is an MIL-STD 810H certified construction. That also means that it will withstand all kinds of drops, scrapes, and spills without too much of an inconvenience.

All that power also gets translated into Windows 11 on the expansive 16:10 14-inch screen. You can opt for QHD+ resolution too, if you want the best experience on the ExpertBook B7 Flip. If QHD+ is not enough for you, you can also get a 4K monitor and connect the ASUS ExpertBook B7 Flip via the Thunderbolt 4 USB Type-C port. The USB Type-C also supports PD 3.0. Speaking of ports, it has a full HDMI 2.0b port for good measure. If you need, there is also a Mini DisplayPort as well alongside a full-sized 3.5mm audio jack and an SD card reader. It even has a Nano SIM slot, if you need the constant connection. For all your teleconferencing needs, there is the 720p webcam that can be covered too with a quick flick of a latch above the camera module.

As mentioned, there is a Nano SIM tray. The ExpertBook B7 Flip supports 5G connectivity to make it the ultimate productivity machine wherever you go. At the same time, if it is available to you, the ExpertBook B7 Flip connects to WiFi 6E for an extra stable and fast internet connection. For all your wireless peripherals, Bluetooth 5.2 should be more than enough while maintaining a low power draw.

ASUS ExpertBook B3 Flip

  • ExpertBook B3 Flip dual camera
  • ExpertBook B3 Flip tent mode
  • ExpertBook B3 Flip LTE
  • ExpertBook B3 Flip garaged stylus
  • ExpertBook B3 Flip flip display

Sitting slightly below the premium B7 Flip is the B3 Flip. Just because the B3 Flip is not premium as the B7 Flip, does not mean you get a lot less for your money.

You still get to spec your ASUS ExpertBook B3 Flip with up to Intel’s Core i7-1165G CPU. Similarly, you do not get a dedicated GPU here, just Intel’s Xe Graphics (up to). Pair the CPU and integrated GPU with up to 48GB of RAM though, and you are still getting a rather powerful multitasker.

You get a Full HD display that measures at 14-inch. The IPS panel is not a 16:10 aspect ratio screen though, it is a regular 16:9 aspect ratio display. There is nothing wrong with that. It is also a touch screen display with stylus support, understandable since it is a convertible.

In terms of port, you get two Thunderbolt 4 USB Type-C ports that both support 4K and USB PD 3.0. There are two full USB Type-A ports, a full-sized HDMI 2.0a port, and even an RJ45 LAN port for you to work with. It even has a microSD card slot that also doubles as a Nano SIM slot if you want one.

Inside, you will find up to 1TB SSD to store all you need to store in your ExpertBook B3 Flip/ You will also find that the ExpertBook B3 Flip has support for 4G LTE bands, WiFi 6 (up to), and Bluetooth 5.0. Dig further you will see two speakers and two microphones for crisp teleconferences. For video conferencing there is the 720p webcam that also has a handy shield to cover it when it is not in use. There is also another 13-Megapixel camera that sits on the keyboard, right below the display that faces away from you in tent mode.

All of these great things are packed in an aluminium body that weighs just over 1.6kg. It is not ExperBook B7 Flip light, but it is not too heavy considering all that it packs. At the same time, the body is an MIL-STD 810H certified body, so it can withstand almost anything you can throw at it.

ASUS ExpertBook B3 Detachable

  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B3 DETACHABLE 01
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B3 DETACHABLE 15
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B3 DETACHABLE 14
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B3 DETACHABLE 13
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B3 DETACHABLE 12
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B3 DETACHABLE 11

  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B3 DETACHABLE 05
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B3 DETACHABLE 04
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B3 DETACHABLE 03
  • ASUS EXPERTBOOK B3 DETACHABLE 02

If you need to be a lot more agile, a lot more mobile, ASUS has a solution for you. The ExpertBook B3 Detachable is technically a tiny Windows tablet that can get you working from anywhere and anytime.

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 Compute Platform, the ExpertBook B3 Detachable is more like a tablet on paper than a laptop. It is still a Windows 11 device though, making it technically a proper PC. At the same time, because the B3 Detachable is powered by a highly power efficient processor, the portable workhorse offers a longer battery life like no other PC in its range can.

The display is not a big one for a PC, a 10.5-inch display that boasts WUXGA resolution. Yes, it is an ideal 16:10 aspect ratio display too for working. It is also an IPS panel which should boast vivid and accurate colours with up to 87% NTSC colour gamut coverage. The glass out front also houses a 5.0-Megapixel camera that can be used, and mostly will be used as a webcam. There is also a 13-Megapixel camera out the back for high-resolution photos when you need it.

The keyboard it comes with, as per its name, is detachable. There is still some tactility on the keyboard though with 1.5m of key travel. At the same time, it is a spill resistant keyboard. It comes with a matching back cover too that is rather clever. The back cover acts as a two-way kickstand. You can stand it in portrait mode, or even the regular landscape orientation in almost any angle you want.

Of course, this being more of a tablet, it only packs one USB Type-C port alongside a 3.5mm combo jack. It still has two speakers and two mics for crystal clear teleconferencing. Of course, you get WiFi 802.11ac connectivity on top of Bluetooth 5.1.

Price and Availability

These are notebooks made mostly for enterprise use. In that case, you might not find them listed or displayed in your favourite PC stores. You want to contact ASUS corporate representative to get your hands on one. If you are interested to get them for your company though, the ASUS ExpertBook B7 Flip will set your company back MYR 8,499. The ExpertBook B3 Flip costs MYR 4,499 while the detachable variant will set your company back MYR 2,099. For more information on the new ASUS ExpertBooks can be found on their website.

Servian founder launches Video Intelligence Platform ‘VisualCortex’

Technology entrepreneur, Tony Nicol, launches video analytics start-up VisualCortex, making video insights accessible, actionable and valuable for all video-rich industries and business functions

SYDNEY and NEW YORK, June 24, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — VisualCortex – the cloud-based Video Intelligence Platform, connecting computer vision’s potential to real-world business outcomes – has officially launched today worldwide. VisualCortex is headquartered in Sydney, Australia.

Watch the VisualCortex overview video here: visualcortex.com

Unlike camera-side or point solutions – which typically focus on one video analytics challenge per deployment – VisualCortex delivers a highly performant enterprise-grade platform to facilitate any real-time or historical video analytics use case. Built to work with both streaming and offline footage, the VisualCortex platform applies machine learning models to video content, enabling organizations to produce analyzable data streams about defined objects and actions. Insights from that data can then be embedded straight into customers’ traditional data infrastructure.

VisualCortex is backed by its Chairman and Co-Founder, Tony Nicol, who sold Australia’s largest data-focused cloud consultancy, Servian, to US-based professional services company, Cognizant, in January 2021. Nicol founded Servian in 2008, where he remained CEO of the 900-person-strong enterprise transformation business until June 2021.

Utilizing experiences building some of the largest and most complex enterprise data platforms, Nicol said that VisualCortex’s purpose was to enable any complex computer vision use case without compromising robustness and reliability.

“We built VisualCortex to overcome the limitations of single-use-case solutions, without sacrificing the stability, security, scalability, flexibility and governance that naturally occurs in homegrown point solutions,” said Nicol.

Commenting on VisualCortex’s launch, Nicol said the company’s mission was to enable any organization to become a vision aware enterprise, allowing them to solve commercially valuable challenges with video-based insights at scale.

“For the first time, we’re making video data truly actionable throughout the enterprise,” said Nicol. “Up until now, computer vision technology has struggled to make commercial sense and generate impactful business value. They’ve also been prohibitively hard-to-use and expensive in terms of cost and time-to-value, hampering the ability to be harnessed by anyone other than machine learning experts.

“VisualCortex’s Video Intelligence Platform removes those barriers and provides an enterprise-grade approach and control to computer vision initiatives,” said Nicol. “We’re enabling any business unit to quickly and easily build and implement a video analytics use case to facilitate future ways of working, today – no matter the nature of your business, hardware or video content.”

CEO and Co-Founder, Patrick Elliott, said that VisualCortex was enabling organizations – regardless of the industry or business function – to produce analyzable video-based data streams about any aspect of their operations.

“VisualCortex is making video intelligence accessible and valuable for all video-rich industries and business functions,” said Elliott. “Our Video Intelligence Platform provides the AI smarts, governance and stability. Clients just need to bring their standard infrastructure, commodity hardware and video – from any stream, camera or repository. With VisualCortex, you can run multiple machine learning models, for any number of video sources, across your existing cameras and video feeds.

“We’re enabling anyone to quickly connect machine learning models with a production-ready cloud-based environment, transforming video assets into analyzable and actionable streams of data at scale. VisualCortex empowers technical users, like software developers and data scientists, as well as business users – from marketing executives and business analysts, to operations teams for OHS, security, car parks and more.”

Elliott added that VisualCortex had already signed a number of commercial agreements and that specific partner and customer announcements would be made in the near future.

“We’ve encountered strong demand for VisualCortex’s approach to video analytics,” said Elliott. “We’re set to announce a number of partnerships in the short-term with software and hardware vendors, service providers and the public sector. In terms of customers, we’ve signed NDAs – and are in various stages of conducting pilots and working on long-term agreements – with organizations in transport, retail and commercial real estate. Stay tuned for further exciting announcements regarding customer success and our growing partner ecosystem.”

CTO and Co-Founder, Ben Evans, said that VisualCortex facilitated both real-time action and strategic analysis for any video analytics use case.

“We’re enabling organizations to easily define, detect, track and produce tangible analytics about the objects and incidents that matter to them – from vehicle and number plate recognition, to people counting and dwell analysis,” said Evans. “Customers can use those analytical insights operationally, triggering real-time alerts – and pushing the video-based data into operational systems – to prompt immediate action. Users can also analyze the data derived from their video assets with in-platform reports or pipe it into third-party databases. Combining video data streams with traditional data sources can unearth powerful integrated insights.”

Evans added that the VisualCortex Model Store would also play a significant role in helping more organizations realize faster, stronger returns on their video analytics initiatives.

“We know that building, training and maintaining reliable machine learning models is resource intensive,” said Evans. “The VisualCortex Model Store provides a secure digital marketplace for customers, partners and independent machine learning experts to share – and generate revenue from – quality controlled computer vision models.

“At its core, the Model Store provides models-as-a-service. Anyone with appropriate security access can upload video footage into the VisualCortex platform, then define events to track, leveraging models from the Model Store, and produce data for analysis.”

VisualCortex is committed to building, training and maintaining a growing set of machine learning models, available out-of-the-box with a VisualCortex subscription license.

Browse the VisualCortex Model Store here: visualcortex.com/model-store

The VisualCortex Video Intelligence Platform can be securely deployed in multiple ways to meet individual organization’s needs: As a fully-managed service in the cloud, on customers’ private cloud, via public cloud providers, on-premise, at the edge, or via a hybrid deployment model. VisualCortex is generally available to the market from Friday 24th June, 2022.

About VisualCortex

VisualCortex is making video data actionable in the enterprise. As the world’s best Video Intelligence Platform, VisualCortex provides the stability and scalability to productionize computer vision technology for the first time. Unlike camera-side or point solutions, VisualCortex can be used for any video analytics use case in any industry. VisualCortex’s production-ready cloud-based environment transforms video assets into analyzable streams of data at scale.

The VisualCortex platform delivers the artificial intelligence smarts, governance and usability, enabling organizations to connect any number of video streams, repositories and use existing commodity hardware. An intuitive user interface, out-of-the-box reporting, range of configurations and integrations empower non-technical people to produce, analyze and act on insights derived from computer vision throughout the enterprise. Organizations can easily combine these AI-generated video insights with other data sources and systems to facilitate both real-time operations and strategic analysis. The VisualCortex Model Store also provides a secure marketplace for customers, partners and independent machine learning experts to share quality controlled computer vision models.

(Nasdaq: FARO), a global leader in 4D digital reality solutions, today formally recognized the agreement by GOLDBECK to deploy FARO’s HoloBuilder Construction Progress Management solution enterprise-wide as indicative of the healthy market adoption of HoloBuilder following the company’s acquisition by FARO in June of 2021, which enabled the industry’s first end-to-end #DigitalReality solution.

HoloBuilder

Utilizing 360° photo capture technology, HoloBuilder enables a quick, easy, and efficient way to manage project progress and capture large amounts of visual information that becomes instantly accessible from anywhere. Integrations with best-in-class 360° cameras and third-party software tools make the #ConstructionTechnology easy to adopt and implement across global construction teams.

GOLDBECK made the decision to roll out HoloBuilder organization-wide (i.e., Enterprise agreement) after utilizing the platform on major construction projects. With HoloBuilder, GOLDBECK’s more than 10,000 employees benefit from digital solutions not only in the office but on the jobsite. Site managers use the platform to track and document construction work with precision, linking 360° photos of the site to the digital building plans, sorting them by location and time, and storing them securely in the cloud.

“We are thrilled that GOLDBECK made our enterprise solution available to their entire organization,” said Brian Kelly, Vice President of HoloBuilder at FARO. “As we celebrate the anniversary of joining forces with FARO, we’ve made remarkable progress toward empowering construction professionals with the solutions they need to increase project efficiency. “Digitalization utilizing HoloBuilder makes it much easier to document and manage construction progress whereby our site managers and everyone involved in planning can collect, evaluate, and work with the data better,” added Sina Schliestedt, Teamlead BIM at GOLDBECK.

In the year since the FARO acquisition, HoloBuilder has continued to enhance its offerings, releasing significant new features including Premium Analytics, HoloBuilder API, and SnapShots. IQAX eBL has been approved by IGP&I.

Prior to February 2010, the rules of all Clubs of the IGP&I preferred paper documentation and excluded liabilities for cargo carried under electronic documentation. However, since 20 February 2010 liabilities arising in respect of the carriage of cargo under such paperless trading systems were covered, provided that the system had first been approved by the Group. In the 12 years since this date, only 7 other solutions have been approved by the IGP&I for use by its members. The addition of IQAX Limited to the list of approved solution providers is a significant milestone as IQAX joins an exclusive list of electronic bill of lading solutions.

As the latest addition to the list of approved electronic bill of lading solution providers, IQAX leverages GSBN’s independent blockchain technology platform to bring an enhanced level of security, assurance and transparency to IQAX eBL users.

The innovative IQAX eBL offers cargo owners, cargo forwarders, ocean carriers, finance providers and other trade participants a paperless solution to manage original bill of lading digitally with one-click title transfers, surrender for delivery, status updates and history reviews.

The IQAX eBL provides a single source of truth for document authenticity, security and traceability. It allows all parties involved in a shipment to manage their bills of lading entirely online, streamlining operations, cutting costs and increasing efficiency. The IQAX eBL runs on GSBN’s blockchain technology platform, which renders ease of adoption and sets it apart from legacy systems. IQAX eBL enables the issuance, transfer, surrender and visibility of original bill of lading and provides access to real time trade status of electronic bill of lading and cargo transportation. (Further details can be found on the company’s website at: https://www.iqax.com/en/solutions/ebl/ .)

IQAX eBL is the first electronic bill of lading solution built on GSBN’s blockchain network. This ensures the authenticity of the bill of lading and ensures data privacy and security. IQAX eBL empowers the industry to create opportunities with trade finance, strengthens risk management and improves cost-effectiveness as well as enhancing overall customer experience.

Romney Wong, IQAX’s CEO mentioned that: “IQAX eBL leverages GSBN blockchain technology platform to provide a completely secure digital environment to further facilitate digitalization of documentation processes. With the layers of protection for data privacy and security, IQAX eBL promotes greater connectivity in global trade and of financial institutions, which significantly improves operational efficiency and revolutionising document management not just for carriers, but for the entire shipping ecosystem.”

Despite challenges faced during the Covid-19 pandemic, IQAX eBL has already been successfully adopted by major carriers – COSCO SHIPPING Lines and OOCL. Both COSCO SHIPPING Lines and OOCL validated the solution with their key clients.

“We empowered our clients to process bill of lading online and efficiently worldwide via IQAX eBL, implementing bill of lading management digitally and offering contactless services. We are able to achieve full visibility as all parties can track detailed logistics information, records of bill of lading transfer and bank processing status. This is crucial during the pandemic. The IQAX solution enables seamless integration across the shipping ecosystem and facilitates the efficient operation of global trade.” said Andy Deng, Global Sales Division General Manager at COSCO SHIPPING Lines.

“We received positive feedback from our customers after OOCL adopted IQAX eBL. There are significant improvements on cost saving and operational efficiency. We look forward to continuing the cooperation with IQAX so more customers can enjoy the convenience and security brought by paperless bill of lading while we jointly promote the transition of the whole industry towards paperless operation.” said Michael Xu, Director of Trades at OOCL.

Bills of lading are critical for the efficient operation of global trade – but the traditional paper-based approach can be cumbersome. The adoption of electronic bill of lading solution can bring sustainable benefits for users and the industry as a whole.

LOS ANGELES, June 23, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — CJ 4DPLEX, the world’s leading producer of premium film formats and cinema technologies announced today that Paramount Pictures’ “Top Gun: Maverick” broke ScreenX and 4DX records, grossing more than $28 million combined across 631 screens worldwide to-date. The ScreenX format specifically shattered several records now in its fifth week, already reaching the highest grossing ScreenX title of 2022 globally bringing in over $7million. Week after week, the title in ScreenX has seen unprecedented growth at the box office. In the U.S. in its third week of the run, ScreenX experienced an unprecedented 68% increase in box office admissions from its previous weekend. This past weekend, ScreenX saw another 7.5% increase in box office bringing in over $1million alone. “Top Gun: Maverick” in ScreenX features 58 minutes of exclusive ScreenX imagery – the most ScreenX content ever to be produced for a ScreenX feature film. The format’s peripheral 3-screen design allows audiences to take in majestic views, feel the rush of flying and puts them right in the middle of the climatic jet fighting scenes with Maverick and his crew.

“We’re so thankful to Tom Cruise, Joe Kosinski, Jerry Bruckheimer, David Ellison and the entire team at Paramount for creating a cultural moment that is bringing audiences back to theaters,” said Don Savant, CEO & President, CJ 4DPLEX America. “‘Top Gun: Maverick showcases CJ 4DPlex’s premium formats, ScreenX and 4DX, which expands moviegoing by bringing the audiences a truly differentiated experience from other cinema offerings as well as from the home & streaming platforms.”

  • In China Taiwan, on only 5 4DX screens, “Top Gun: Maverick” brought in an astounding $700,000

CJ 4DPLEX worked closely with director Joe Kosinski and Paramount Pictures on selecting the most immersive scenes for ScreenX and carefully crafted the motion and effects for 4DX to ensure the highest quality presentation of the film.

“The increase in audiences and our record-breaking box office results reinforces the strong word-of mouth around the film for both of our formats, many of whom are returning to see the movie in a completely unique presentation.” Jongryul Kim, CEO, CJ 4DPLEX. “We hope that movie fans who have discovered ScreenX and 4DX for the first time will experience other great films that can’t be seen anywhere else.”

“Premium formats like ScreenX and 4DX are helping drive audiences to see this spectacular film in different ways and it shows in the numbers, even a month after a massive opening weekend,” said Marc Weinstock, President, Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, Paramount Pictures. “We are thrilled with seeing movie fans continue to come out and see this epic blockbuster on the big screen in these new and exciting formats.”

MediaTek Takes on Flagships with Dimensity 9000+

The absolute king of the hill right now when it comes to raw processing power on a smartphone platform is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 system on a chip (SoC). It is also what everybody, at least in the Android world, wants in their flagship smartphones currently. It is the most powerful SoC your smartphone can get today with only the Samsung Exynos as a distant challenger. They are introducing a new one too, very soon.

The second-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC is not coming until the end of the year, as far as we know. In the meantime, there is MediaTek making their steps in high-end smartphone chips.

To be fair, the name MediaTek does not bring a lot of confidence in terms of high-end SoC for mobile applications. They are mostly known for their budget friendly SoCs in entry-level and mid-range smartphones. In that regards though, MediaTek’s SoCs have been solid performers in their class, in some cases probably better than what you can expect from price equivalent Qualcomm devices.

The new Dimensity 9000+ from MediaTek is their hope that the “budget king” perception ends. It is also MediaTek’s most powerful SoC to date with 5G in tow. The new Dimensity, in this case, goes head-to-head with Qualcomm’s current best.

At its core is the ARM Cortex-X2 architecture, the same one the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 boasts in their Kryo CPUs. The single ARM Cortex-X2 core works with three powerful Cortex-A710 cores and low-power high-efficiency Cortex-A510 cores. The 4nm octa-core CPU arrangement makes ARM’s v9 architecture.

Besides the obvious CPU and GPU improvements, and 5G capabilities the SoC comes with a slew of compelling upgrades. One of which is LPDDR5X support with 8MB L3 CPU cache and 6MB system cache support for new-generation smartphones with ultra-fast memory. Instead of a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that is widely boasted by its competitors, MediaTek opted for something a little more practical in a dedicated Application Processor Unit (APU 5.0) for all its A.I. purposes.

MediaTek also packs a powerful imaging processor withing the Dimensity 9000+. They call it the MediaTek Imagiq 790. Rivaling the Qualcomm’s own image processor, the new processor supports up to 18-bit HDR-ISP at up to 320-Megapixel. Of course, you there is no camera sensor in the world currently that packs that many pixels into an area less than an inch. It is good to know that you can super sample your photos to up to 320-Megapixel though.

The Imagiq 790 also allows the MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ equipped devices to record three videos simultaneously at up to 18-bit HDR formats. It even does 4K HDR with AI noise reduction, especially useful in low-light conditions.

The new MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ can support up to 144Hz WQHD+ or even 180Hz Full HD+ displays thanks to the new MiraVision 790 engine. The new display engine also has something called Intelligent Display Sync 2.0 technology that optimizes the power efficiency of the display. Thanks to the engine, the Wi-Fi display now supports up to 4K resolution at 60fps with HDR10+ streaming.

Of course, the latest and greatest SoC cannot be the latest and greatest if it does not pack the latest connectivity and networking technology. For that the 3GPP Release-16 5G modem can hit downlink speeds of up to 7Gbps. The new SoC also supports the latest WiFi 6E standards, new Bluetooth 5.3 standards, and even a new more accurate GNSS.

MediaTek is expecting their new Dimensity 9000+ to make its way to flagship devices starting Q3 2022. As mentioned, the Dimensity 9000+ is meant to be a direct competitor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. At the same time, the second-generation Snapdragon 8 is meant to be announced by Q4 2022. How the Dimensity 9000+ will fare against the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 remains to be seen. We think you might have to wait for the first Dimensity 9000+ devices to roll out. There are no confirmed devices sporting the new Mediatek flagship SoC currently too.
