Japanese Startup Receives Developer Grant to Build a Blockchain-based Electronic Voting System with Embedded User ID

ZUG, Switzerland, Feb. 18, 2022 — PHI Inc. is the first company in Japan to be awarded the `Free and Open Grant’ by the Concordium Foundation. The grant has been awarded for the development of an innovative electronic open voting project, called Govote, which will run on the Concordium blockchain.

The PHI team has been working on a business model for managing teams and projects through a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) preparing for the Web3 era.The Govote project is part of PHI’s vision of digital governance of DAO society. Govote can be used for a general meeting of shareholders, distributed teams building and online communities.

In their search for a blockchain platform to meet the requirements of the next-generation voting system, the PHI team found Concordium blockchain which implements identity management. Privacy and anonymity are inherent  to voting mechanisms to Govote, which uses blockchain technology and zero-knowledge proofs to provide voting rights, vote anonymity, and tamper-resistance of voting results.

Fresh Off the Unpacked 2022 Boat, and On to Another – Samsung is Back for MWC 2022

Our memory is still fresh with Samsung’s Galaxy S22 launch earlier this month. If you have been living under a shell; yes, it is the year 2022 and Samsung has launched their latest sequel to one of the most successful line-ups of Android devices in the world. The Samsung Galaxy S22 is here and will come to your doorways on the 3rd of March 2022.

It does not seem like Samsung is done launching devices though. They have just announced that they will be making another appearance alongside MWC 2022. On the 27th of February 2022, Samsung is making another round of announcements and inevitably launch a few products. The public invite on their website says that the event will be streamed LIVE on their YouTube channel at 7.00 p.m. CET (2.00 a.m. 28th of February 2022 Malaysia Time). They have also released some graphics with the date announcement and said that the graphics will be representative of what they are launching in late February.

We eyed a smartphone, tablet, the S Pen, a wearable, the Z Fold and Z Flip, and a laptop. Considering Samsung just launched their new smartphone and tablet, we doubt they will be releasing anymore of those anytime soon. In that case we probably can expect Samsung to launch a new wearable maybe, or a new notebook PC in that case.

There is also a small chance that Samsung might announce the inclusion of their smartphones and wearables in their Bespoke program. In that case, you might be able to buy a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 in a very special colour of your own for example. Then again, this is all speculations.

We could all be wrong, and Samsung might just launch a whole new line-up of smarthome products. This is MWC though, so we think that is highly improbably too. Samsung is being a little vague on this event.

Whatever it is, we will only find out in their second major announcement of the year in their MWC 2022 event. Again, you can watch their announcement on their YouTube channel on the 27th of February 2022 at 7.00 p.m CET (28th of February 2022 at 2.00 a.m. Kuala Lumpur time). Picosun delivers powder MEMS technology platform to Fraunhofer ISIT

ESPOO, Finland, Feb. 17, 2022 — Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology (ISIT) has taken PICOSUN® P-300B ALD system into use as their powder MEMS technology platform.

Fraunhofer ISIT PowderMEMS is a new innovative technology for creating three-dimensional microstructures from a multitude of materials on wafer level. The technology is based on bonding together µm-sized powder particles in a cavity with Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). It has many advantages compared to other manufacturing techniques as it allows using much lower process temperatures compared to a traditional sintering process. The bonded porous structures are thermally and chemically resistant thus enabling their extensive post-processing in a clean room.

"The technology can be used for various applications, such as microelectronics, MEMS sensors, MEMS actuators and microfluidics. For example, it enables the integration of porous and magnetic 3D microstructures on wafer level", explains Dr. Björn Gojdka, Group Leader at Fraunhofer ISIT.

Picosun solution is a perfect fit for this need as we are also looking into scaling up the technology. Sony Announces the LinkBuds WF-L900 – Listen to Music and Talk to Your Friends at the Same Time!

When our friends ask us what they should get as a personal music listening device, we always go back to one brand. If you guessed ‘Sony’, you would be right. The sony WF-L900 LinkBuds delivers audio like traditional headphones, though a regular audio driver seated within the main body casing of the earphones. SK hynix Develops PIM, Next-Generation AI Accelerator

It has been generally accepted that memory chips store data and CPU or GPU, like human brain, process data. SK hynix, following its challenge to such notion and efforts to pursue innovation in the next-generation smart memory, has found a breakthrough solution with the development of the latest technology.

SK hynix plans to showcase its PIM development at the world’s most prestigious semiconductor conference, 2022 ISSCC*, in San Francisco at the end of this month. The  company expects continued efforts for innovation of this technology to bring the memory-centric computing, in which semiconductor memory plays a central role, a step closer to the reality in devices such as smartphones.

For the first product that adopts the PIM technology, SK hynix has developed a sample of GDDR6-AiM (Accelerator* in memory). The GDDR6-AiM adds computational functions to GDDR6* memory chips, which process data at 16Gbps. A combination of GDDR6-AiM with CPU or GPU instead of a typical DRAM makes certain computation speed 16 times faster. GDDR6-AiM is widely expected to be adopted for machine learning, high-performance computing, and big data computation and storage.

GDDR6-AiM runs on 1.25V, lower than the existing product’s operating voltage of 1.35V. In addition, the PIM reduces data movement to the CPU and GPU, reducing power consumption by 80%. This, accordingly, helps SK hynix meet its commitment to ESG management by reducing carbon emissions of the devices that adopt this product.

SK hynix also plans to introduce a technology that combines GDDR6-AiM with AI chips in collaboration with SAPEON Inc., an AI chip company that recently spun off from SK Telecom.

Microsoft Brings the Surface Laptop Studio to Malaysia for MYR 7,399 Onward

The most powerful Microsoft Surface laptop is finally coming to Malaysia. Announced back in September 2021, the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio is meant to be a beast of a thing that can keep content creators churning contents out like champs. It is also Microsoft’s first notebook that features an ezel-style (Dynamic Woven Hinge) hinge to turn it into a studio powerhouse. Of course, it is a touch sensitive display too. With a stylus, it is made to be the ultimate tool in a creative environment.

A studio powerhouse is meant to be powerful, so Microsoft fitted this laptop with a powerful H35 series 11th Generation Intel Core processor (up to Core i7-11370H). Of course, a studio notebook is not complete without a powerful GPU to ensure that it can handle multiple displays and whatever software you can think of throwing at it. For that, the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio features up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti.

In Malaysia, you can spec your Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio with up to 32GB of RAM and up to 1TB of SSD storage. Unfortunately, you can only get those specs in Harvey Norman. If not, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD should be more than enough for today’s studio standards. For anything more in terms of storage, you might want to think about getting external back up drives.
