5G, Industry, & Collaboration at the Edge

Edge computing is the ability to give life to the transformative use cases that businesses are dreaming up today and bring real-time decision making to last-mile locales. This can include a far-flung factory or train roaring down the tracks, someone’s connected home, or their car speeding down the highway or even in space. Who thought we’d be running Kubernetes in space?

This shows that edge computing can transform the way we live, and we are doing it right now.

Why Collaboration Is Critical

Edge technologies are blending the digital and physical worlds in a new way, and that combination is resonating at a human level. This human resonance might sound like an aspirational achievement, but it is already here. A great example is when we used AR/VR to improve safety on the factory floor.

Continued collaboration, however, is necessary to keep enabling breakthrough successes. Across industries and organizations, we are all highly dependent on one another. Thinking about the telecommunications and industrial sectors, in particular, there is a mutually supportive, symbiotic relationship between these industries—5G development cannot be successful without industrial use cases, which, in turn, are based on telco technologies.

However, numerous challenges remain: reducing network complexity, maintaining security, improving agility, and ensuring a vibrant ecosystem where the only way to address and solve those is by tapping into the collective wisdom of the community.

With open-source, we can unify and empower communities on a broad scale. The open-source ecosystem brings people together to focus on a common problem to solve with software. That shared purpose can turn isolated efforts into collective ones so that changes are industry-wide and reflect a wide range of needs and values.

The collaboration that open source makes possible continues to ignite tremendous change and alter our future in so many ways, making it the innovation engine for industries.

If we collaborate on 5G and edge in this manner, nascent technologies could become exciting common foundations in the same way that Linux and Kubernetes have because when we work together, the only limit to these possibilities is our imagination.

From Maps to Apps and Much More

Do you remember having to use a paper-based map to figure out driving directions?  Flash forward to today: Look at the applications we take for granted on our phones or in our homes that allow us to change our driving route in real-time to avoid traffic, or to monitor and grant access to our front doors—to the point that these have shaped how we interact with our environments and each other. Yet not too long ago, many of these things were unimaginable. We barely had cloud technology, we were in the transition from 3G to 4G, and smartphones were new.

But there was important work being done by lots of people who were improving upon the core technologies. The convergence of three technology trends, as it turns out, unlocked a hugely disruptive opportunity: a cloud-native, mobile-device-enabled transportation service that picked you up wherever you were and took you wherever you wanted to go.

This opportunity was only possible because each trend built on the others to create a truly novel offering. Without one of these trends, the applications from the ride-sharing apps of the world would not have been the same or as disruptive. Imagine yourself scrambling to find a WiFi hotspot on the street corner, whipping out your laptop outside a restaurant while standing in the rain, or starting your business by first constructing a massive data centre. The convergence of smartphones, 4G networks, and cloud computing has enabled a new world.

Today we are creating the next set of technologies that will become the things so embedded in our lives and so indispensable to our daily habits that we will wonder how we ever got by without them. Are you ready to be wearing clothes with sensors in them that tell you how healthy you are?

The possibilities with edge technologies are equally as exciting. It starts with the marriage of the digital world with the physical world. Adding in pervasive connectivity—leveraging a common 5G and edge platform—we can transform how operational technologies interact with the physical world and that changes everything.

The Future Is Now

We are creating this new world that is hard to imagine, yet it is not so foreign because we have seen how this story has played out before. Expect these new technologies to have profound implications for humanity—in our daily lives, how we interact with one another, and the social fabric of our world.

high angle photo of robot
Photo by Alex Knight on Pexels.com

All of that cannot happen without collaboration.

We have only to look at how open source has empowered collaboration and how working together has helped people across organizations and industries build more robust, shared platforms more quickly and differentiate on top of them—with apps and capabilities built on the foundation of Kubernetes and Linux, for example.

[Game Review] techENT Plays Pokémon UNITE

When we think of Pokémon we’re taken back to a nostalgic role-playing game from the 90s which saw the world fall in love with Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Pikachu. However, with the franchise hitting its 25th anniversary, the Pokémon Company seems to be upping the ante with new games and remakes. One of the new games that have hit the scene is co-developed with Tenchent’s TiMi Studios.Pokémon UNITE – the franchise’s first foray into the Multiplayer Online Battle Area (MOBA) genre.

While we’re used to the turn-based battles of a regular Pokémon battle, the MOBA genre brings a totally new dimension to battles. The game is developed in partnership with Tencent’s TiMi studios.

Welcome to Aeos Island!

Anyone who follows Pokémon knows that with the launch of every game, you’ll be taken to a new region. This time, Pokémon UNITE takes players to Aeos Island. This region is rich in an energy called Aeos Energy which seems to make Pokémon more powerful. The Pokémon professor, Professor Phorus, studies this energy and its affect on Pokémon. Together with her research fellow Erbie, they created the UNITE battles.

When it comes to lore, that’s about it for the game. Once you enter the main game, you’ll hardly interact with Professor Phorus or Erbie beyond the tutorials. However, it doesn’t discount the possibility of new lore being introduced at a later date.

Gameplay Mechanics

If you’ve never played a MOBA before, this game is definitely a really good introduction to the genre. Pokémon UNITE is your typical MOBA with a few tweaks. It shares your typical 5-on-5 battle system where players will be going head to head in teams of 5. It also has quick battles where players can have 2-on-2, 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 battles. The objective of the game is pretty straight forward – score more points than your opponent within the given time. Battles are either 5- or 10-minutes in duration.

Players can choose from a number of Pokémon from four categories: Attacker, Defender, Supporter and All-Rounder. Attackers are Pokémon who are able to do heavy damage at the expense of health; Defenders are usually bulky with less speed but more endurance; Supporters are Pokémon who buff and disable opponents for better chances at winning while All-Rounders are Pokémon who are flexible when it comes to play style. These are pretty much the archetypes you see in other MOBA’s like Mobile Legends or League of Legends.

During the game, players will be playing in an arena with up to 10 goal points split evenly between the two teams. Like other MOBA’s players will need to go into the arena and battle, not only their opponents, but also the wild Pokémon to collect Aeos Energy. Players score points by dunking this energy into the goals. Of course, being a MOBA, you can take down your enemy to steal their Aeos Energy and interupt them from scoring goals. The team with the most points at the end of the round wins. Individual players also receive ratings based on the number of points scored, assists and KOs. These metric determine if you become the MVP.

Fun, Simple & Quick

The Pokémon UNITE gameplay makes for a really fun game which players can jump into for a break. The simplistic, family-friendly MOBA has a learning curve for first timers, however, it isn’t a steep one. That said, in our time with the game, it seems like MOBA veterans are having a harder time acclimatising themselves to the gameplay than new players. It takes time to appreciate the scoring mechanic of the game.

The gameplay also expands into the customization and personalisation of your Pokémon UNITE avatar. Like Pokémon GO, there is a limited amount of customization in the game. Players can, of course, choose between male and female with some customisation to hairstyles and clothes. These customisations are also how Pokémon UNITE intends to make money for Nintendo and Tencent and they aren’t hiding it. In addition to this, Pokémon UNITE also has held items which give buffs to Pokémon in battle. Pokémon are also equippped with Battle items that provide effects which can be activated to turn the tides of a faceoff.

The controls in Pokémon UNITE are easy to learn but can be finnicky. If you, like me, jumps into the game without customising your setup, you might find yourself dying as a result of getting pulled back into battle when you’re trying to runaway with a skill like Volt Switch. The default settings can suck the fun out of the game – if you’re not used to them. However, you can mess with the game settings in the opening screen to fit your gameplay style.

The game’s short duration for battles and quick matchmaking make it ideal for playing in between meetings, classes or even when you just need a quick break. It can be addictive but has the potential to hold gamers in for a long time given the ease of getting a quick battle 5 or 10 minute battle in.

Janky Sound Design

While Pokémon UNITE does well in game design, the sound design of the game has a lot of space for improvement. The soundtracks are lack variety, you are hearing the same music over and over – particularly in the waiting screens. Even the arena soundtracks lack variety. You hear the same sound with little to no variation throughout the battle. Of course, there is some ramp up as time closes in, but that’s about it. Even transitions are abrupt and awkwardly put together.

Sure, you can argue Pokémon isn’t really a franchise known for its sound, but entering the MOBA genre also brings a focus on sound design as it does play into long term replayability. Other games in the genre have pretty good sound design.

Microtransactions, Microtransactions, Microtransactions

The one thing that does spoil the fun of Pokémon UNITE is the microtranscations that are unapologetically shoved in your face. The game comes with five in game currencies: Aeos coins, Aeos Tickets, Aeos Gems, Holowear Tickets and Fashion Tickets. These currencies can be earned from normal gameplay except for Aeos Gems. These Aeos Gems are bought with real world money.

While TiMi and the Pokémon Company claim that these transaction will not take away from gameplay, they allow users to purchase more powerful Pokémon and items which can buff stats. This undoubtedly will affect overall gameplay – particularly when it comes to battle items. Players can acquire these items with Aeos coins, however, they cost anywhere between 1,000 to 5,000 coins which entails a significant amount of in-game grinding. Players can eliminate the grinding and waiting by simply spending real money on gems. They can also cost anywhere between 40-100 gems. What’s more, when you unlock Item Enhancers at Level 9, you can increase the buffs of these items. These item enhancers are also availble for purchase. So, guess who’s going to have the upper hand with more damage and better recovery?

A Good Jumping off Point with the Looming Dread of Microtransactions

Overall, Pokémon UNITE is off to a good start and has potential to become a really big MOBA given that it’s on both the Nintendo Switch and mobile. It’s simple to play with game mechanics that can be addictive even in small doses. However, it risks losing a significant portion of its players as it continues to blatantly shove microtransactions into player’s faces. While the developers can claim that there are no “pay to win” purchases, it can quickly devolve given the nature or held and battle items. We are hopeful to see a new entry in the eSports arena but cautiously optimistic that the game doesn’t just become a microtransaction machine.

LG Announces the Éclair QP5 soundbar – Compact but Powerful

LG Electronics should need no introduction by now. They are one of the foremost electronics companies in the world. What most do not realise though is that LG is also one of the most foremost manufacturers in the world of home and high-end audio. At the same time, their TVs are some of the best selling in the world.

Combine their knowhow in making great audio products and immersive technology, and you have some of the best sound bars money can buy. The sound bars that LG makes are not just great sounding though. They look amazing and they can fit any home décor.

They just announced their new compact sound bar that is the LG Éclair QP5. It is tiny, a mere 296mm in width. It is only a third of the width of LG’s previously most compact soundbar that is the SP8YA. Comparing it to regular sound bars, it might as well be a quarter the size.

LG Eclair 6
Source: LG

It is still a 3.1.2 sound bar though, for that all important surround sound experience you can only get from a soundbar. It is not just a regular 3.1.2 experience though. LG has perfected this soundbar with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support for the most complete audio experience alongside the powerful subwoofer that comes with the Éclair set up.

There is a reason why the LG Éclair is named the way it is. Its elongated oval shape resembles that of an Éclair. The chic and song design really fits the décor of a modern home, especially in smaller apartment units where space comes at a premium.

The soundbar is a clever one too. With LG AI Sound Pro, contents are analysed, processed, and presented to you in the best settings. It even has 4K pass-through support to allow users to enjoy 4K, HDR, and Dolby Vision contents with the LG Éclair.

The Meridian technology soundbar also comes with eARC support via HDMI for lossless 5.1-channel, 7.1-channel, and other immersive audio formats on the soundbar itself. It works vest with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X compatible mediums of course. Of course, the LG Éclair soundbar works best with LG TVs.

  • LG Eclair 1
  • LG Eclair 6
  • LG Eclair 5
  • LG Eclair 4
  • LG Eclair 3
  • LG Eclair 2

There are no mentions on its availability in Malaysia. The LG Éclair is already available in select regions across Europe. We do think that the Éclair is a fitting product for Malaysian homes though. More information on the LG Éclair can be found on LG’s website.

Bairong Inc. Releases Inaugural Environmental, Social and Governance Report for 2020

Technology enables Bairong to maintain its leading service position, driving the upgrade of the financial services industry

BEIJING, July 26, 2021 — Bairong Inc ("Bairong", 6608.HK), a leading independent AI-powered technology platform in China, has officially released its inaugural 2020 Environmental, Social and Governance Report ("the Report"). Furthermore, its new Intelligent Customer Service System helps financial institutions reduce costs and improve efficiency and the Intelligent Risk Control Middle Platform assists banks and other traditional financial institutions to achieve digital transformation and innovation in risk control.

In addition, the Report demonstrates Bairong’s ongoing investment in R&D. In 2020, the company obtained 18 intellectual property rights pertaining to data insight, federated machine learning, risk control cloud platforms, business intelligence (BI) analysis and model monitoring — bringing its total IP count close to 100.

Complementing its technological achievements, the Report reveals how Bairong’s latest product and service innovations assist financial institutions to provide consumers with better financial services and a better experience. The full life-cycle intelligent risk management and precision marketing solutions support improved front-end marketing and customer acquisition with pre-lending fraud prevention, dynamic early warning during lending, and post-lending full process services. Last year also saw Bairong optimize its customer feedback mechanism with nine operating management principles and Customer Feedback Handling Procedures to ensure quality service and timely responses to feedback.

With a commitment to enhancing its positive influence on society, the 2020 ESG Report underscores the role Bairong plays in social responsibility. Recognizing that risk control is becoming more challenging for financial institutions, Bairong’s new intelligent risk control system helps financial institutions package back-end resources so they can be harnessed to reduce business risk at the front end. The system can be used in a variety of risk control scenarios such as anti-fraud, risk assessment, risk warning, and post-loan management.

The Report also covers Bairong’s continued efforts of improving its corporate governance structure in 2020 to continuously improve efficiency, manage risk control levels, and prevent compliance risk. In response to the pandemic, the company established a new risk identification and management process in response to emerging risks such as extreme weather, human environmental damage, infectious diseases and internet security. In tandem, new Compliance Risk Management Measures ensure Bairong is able to realize efficient identifications in risk management and maintain operating management and performance in accordance with laws, regulations and standards.

Furthering its commitment to a sustainable future, the 2020 ESG report outlines Bairong’s continued commitment to green development. By assisting in the digital transformation of the financial services industry, Bairong is actively supporting reduced energy and resource consumption across the globe. Meanwhile, the company has introduced key initiatives to reduce its own environmental impact, including green offices, green procurement processes, and green data centers.

CGTN Think Tank Releases an Analytical Report on the Global Situation of the COVID-19 Pandemic

BEIJING, July 24, 2021 — As the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has not yet subsided, the CGTN Think Tank has released an Analytical Report on the Global Situation of the COVID-19 Pandemic (the "Report") by sourcing data from the Johns Hopkins University website, Our World in Data and Pharmaceutical Technology that have not been comprehensively processed, analyzing research literature from the academic community and referring to the known impact of the pandemic on global economic and social development as well as the recommendations on its prevention and control from renowned public health experts. The Report puts together the data on pandemic prevention and control measures in 51 sample countries to make rankings as a way of reflecting the current situation of pandemic control in these countries. It focuses on the importance that countries attach to personal safety, social and environmental stability, thereby providing ideas and directions for countries around the world to fight the pandemic.

The Report analyzes and evaluates the current status of pandemic prevention and control in the 51 countries based on five indicators, including the total number of confirmed cases, the number of newly confirmed cases, the total number of deaths, the number of vaccinations and the full cycle from pandemic outbreak to control as of 14 July.

The data shows that the United States has the worst performance on three of the five statistical indicators. The U.S. has over 34 million confirmed cases in total, the highest in the world, and over 600,000 deaths in total, also the highest in the world; and the number of days with less than 5,000 daily new cases in the full cycle from pandemic outbreak to control is only 62, still the worst among the sample countries.

According to the data, the situation in main European countries is not encouraging. When it comes to the total number of confirmed cases and deaths, France, the UK and Italy all rank high.

The data shows that some Asian countries have performed well in pandemic prevention and control, thanks to effective measures such as entry bans, quarantine and stringent testing at the border. China has the lowest number of confirmed new cases among the sample countries and the highest number of vaccinations in the world; Singapore and Vietnam rank low among all sample countries for the total number of COVID-19 deaths; and South Korea has adjusted the level of pandemic response in a timely manner, resulting in 537 days with less than 5,000 daily new cases.

In terms of the number of vaccinations, China is one of a few developing countries with the highest number of COVID-19 vaccinations due to its ability to develop and manufacture its own vaccines. At present, over 1.4 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in China. China has also supplied more than 500 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines and stock solutions to more than 100 countries and international organizations worldwide, equivalent to one-sixth of the total global vaccine production. However, the statistics also lay bare that the vaccination progress in developing countries is significantly worse than that in developed countries, due to the severe inequality in the global distribution of vaccines. Countries with a poor vaccination record, such as Vietnam and Iraq, are still far from reaching herd immunity due to various limitations, such as poor health service and vaccine hoarding by certain developed countries.

The polarization in the number of confirmed cases, the number of deaths and the number of people vaccinated in different countries and regions of the world, as shown by the objective statistics, is very much related to national pandemic prevention and control policies and measures, and highlights the crucial role played by a country’s government in pandemic prevention and control.
