Acer Expands to Healthcare with a Focus on AI-Assisted Diagnostics

Acer has been really busy in the recent past expanding its portfolio to become a more well-rounded tech and lifestyle company. In recent years, the company has already introduced the Predator Shot, an energy drink targeted at gamers, the Predator Gaming Chair, a collaborative effort with OSIM, and even a brand new brand – Acerpure. The company isn’t just stopping there though. It looks like they are expanding into the healthcare segment and it’s happening really soon.

In an interview session with the media, President of Acer Pan Asia Pacific Operations, Mr Andrew Hou, unwittingly revealed that the company would be exploring opportunities in healthcare in the near future. Upon further investigation, we found that Acer has already set up a new subsidiary, Acer Healthcare. The company is listed in the Tracxn database and is noted to be founded in 2019. Acer has also set up an official website for Acer Healthcare.

It looks like Acer is looking to leverage its prowess in dealing with data and technology to help bridge the closing gap between technology and medicine. Acer Healthcare seems to be looking into using AI-powered devices to help with diagnosis and patient monitoring. The field has been growing in the past few years with multiple startups and companies exploring opportunities and new technologies that can help better diagnose patients.

Acer Healthcare has already released a product called VeriSee DR, an AI-assisted solution for diagnosing Diabetic Retinopathy – a condition that affects close to 130 million people worldwide. Using Acer’s VeriSee DR, the condition can be diagnosed by utilising AI to analyse pictures of patients’ ocular fundus (the interior of the eye) for signs of diabetic retinopathy. According to their website, the technology works with a 95% sensitivity with 90% specificity for diagnosis. In fact, Acer Healthcare has ongoing clinical trials with the VeriSee DR and has published research on it in multiple medical journals.

In addition to VeriSee DR, it looks like Acer Healthcare is focusing on research and development of new diagnostic technologies using AI. Of note are a few currently listed research projects which include the diagnosis of heart arrhythmia using AI analysis of data collected from continual detection using an Acer Leap Ware wearable device and the diagnosis of renal impairment through retinal fundus imaging. While it does seem like the company’s focus is on diagnostic technologies they are also working on technologies for medical record and referrals as well.

Angry Miao releases its next-generation product in the CYBERBOARD series – “CYBERBOARD Le Smoking”

ZHUHAI, China, May 28, 2021Angry Miao officially released its next-generation product in the CYBERBOARD series – "CYBERBOARD Le Smoking" on May 27, 2021. Not only has it been fully upgraded in terms of performance and design, it also took a large part of its inspiration from the matte and glossy elements from Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking suit. Once again, Angry Miao presents a truly unique keyboard that breaks through the limitations of current manufacturing technology. The official retail price is 670 USD & 580 USD.

CYBERBOARD R2 Le Smoking
CYBERBOARD R2 Le Smoking

With regard to the bold design of this keyboard, Angry Miao founder Li Nan mentioned in an interview that "A good design is impossible without considering the cultural context behind the product. High-end fashion brands often inspire design trends within the consumer electronics industry. By paying homage to Saint Laurent and Hedi Slimane, we hope to take a leading role in moving the consumer electronics industry forward when it comes to design trends."

Matte and glossy design, a salute to Le Smoking by Hedi Slimane

CYBERBOARD R2 is inspired by the classic Saint Laurent Le Smoking suit, symbolizing the independent spirit of women. In the era of Hedi Silmane, with his signature slim cut, metal chain and Chelsea boots, Le Smoking gained popularity among men once again. The cool all-black design, with its contrast between matte and glossy materials, presents abundant texture and details, presenting a rebellious rock & roll spirit.

CYBERBOARD Le Smoking comes in three matte and glossy color combinations: Jet Black, Psychedelic and Meteor Grey. All three evoke a tough, psychedelic look. The aluminum ingot frame on the front of the keyboard is formed through CNC machining, sandblasting, and several other complex polishing processes. Finally coated by a PVD vacuum furnace (the Meteor Grey variant is anodized), and a bright and shiny mirror-like surface is the end result.

On the sides, a precise, layered matte spraying process is used to create an advanced yet low-key matte texture, perfectly contrasting with the front. This combination of glossy and matte is a true homage to Le Smoking’s cross-generational design and appeal.

CYBERBOARD Le Smoking’s shiny matte surface is made of 100% aluminum alloy; a world-first in the computer electronics industry. Sandblasting and mirror polishing is used to ensure the feel and uniformity of the matte surface. Achieving a bright mirror-like effect is a true test for any part of the production process. With current manufacturing limitations, it is not yet 100% perfect. Therefore, there may still be small defects such as small white spots and minor color differences on the bottom of the shell. The all-new PVD direct plating process brings an unprecedented shiny mirror experience, but at the same time also may bring some subtle issues that might slightly affect the overall experience.

Gasket Mount: a transcendental feel and sound

In addition to its incredible color design, CYBERBOARD Le Smoking’s Gasket Mount is another true highlight. The upgraded Gasket Mount gives a better sound and feel to CYBERBOARD. It makes typing a graceful duet between you and your keyboard.

The new positioning plate has also been optimized and improved in several ways. Together with the hollowed out leaf spring-like structure, we have reduced the resonance and improved the spring action; making for a satisfying sound and resulting in a wondrous typing experience.

Le Smoking allows you to choose between four different plate materials, including Black Aluminum Plate (default), Psychedelic PVD Brass, Golden Black FR-4, and 1.5mm Translucent PC. Multiple choices for OGs like yourself.

DIY fun with new lighting effects

Besides brand-new design and upgraded gasket, the DIY lighting effects have also been significantly upgraded.

Le Smoking’s LED effect slots have jumped from one to three, providing you with greater creative flexibility. In addition, an in-switch lighting function has been added. Newly upgraded RGB hardware and 256-level DC dimming allows for a higher refresh rate and stronger color reproduction, giving you more DIY fun with every tap.

This upgrade removes the physical dual-mode switch and instead implements seamless switching between Bluetooth and wireless modes. For European users, a soldering PCB is also available as an additional option, providing greater versatility for users using an ISO layout.

Even more surprises: all-new keycaps and cyan-colored CYBERCOIN

In addition to the CYBERBOARD Le Smoking, Angry Miao is also launching the all-new Angry Miao 021C keycap set, Time Machine artisan keycap, The Chimney Cat artisan keycap (AFS) and a cyan-colored CYBERCOIN. These new accessories give users even more choices to match their setup perfectly.

[Next@Acer 2021] Acer Launches 11th Generation Intel and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Series Powered Predator Triton 500 SE and Helios 500.

Acer’s Predator Triton 500 received a lot of praises and accolades in its 2019 and 2020 reign. It was regarded as one of the best thin and light gaming PCs you can buy with money at the time. It is not hard to understand why it was the device of choice for plenty of gamers and content creators that are looking for an ultra-portable powerhouse.

The Helios 500 too, was regarded as one very capable high-end gaming notebooks with no compromises. It was the very definition of a fuss-free portable gaming experience for Predator. That also was about two years ago though.

That was 2019 and 2020 though. Since then, the world has moved on to a new platform. The world saw the launch of NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 30 series late in 2020 and Intel’s brand new 11th Generation Core platform earlier in 2021. The Predators need an upgrade.

Predator Triton 500 SE

Acer’s Predator launched the Triton 300 SE last year. It was, in our humble opinions, a simple design study. The Triton 300 SE took up the idea of designing a gaming PC class with a timeless classic look. A simplistic design that is more futuristic than intimidating. At the same time, the sleek body has to contain a large power pool within.

The Acer Predator Triton 500 SE sits above the Acer Triton 300 SE, technically. If you put both devices together, you would struggle to find a difference too, at least visually, with good reason. Both feature the same shiny all-metal outer shell design. Rather than the usual matte black body that we are used to with gaming notebooks, the Triton 500 SE’s body is shiny and brilliant in sterling silver.

The Triton 500 SE is unique in more ways that one though. The odd shaped body houses an expansive 16-inch display with 16:10 display ratio. With up to 240Hz of refresh rate on tap from the WXGA resolution display, the Triton 500 SE give you a new perspective in gaming, obviously for the better. With 100% DCI-P3 colour coverage, the Predator Triton 500 is not only colour accurate for content creators, but also immersive for other forms of entertainment as well. With DTS:X audio, you can truly immerse yourself in Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and the upcoming Disney+ (for Malaysia).

To sustain 240Hz at high-resolution though, you need a lot of processing power. That processing power comes from an 11th Generation Intel Core i9 (up to) paired with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 mobile GPU (up to). You get to spec the Triton with up to 64GB (32GB DDR4 x 2) RAM to make quick work of Adobe apps. You even get to fit the Predator Triton 500 SE with up to two SSDs to ensure you always have extra space for your projects and games.

All of these are packed in a 19.9mm think all-metal body. Within the shell are three powerful 5th generation Aeroblade fans with Vortex Flow technology to keep the PC running cool and optimally at all times. The all-metal body also houses a large battery that could keep you running without plugging yourself to a wall socket for up to 12 hours. Of course, that is only possible with the help of NVIDIA Advanced Optimus technology.

Predator Helios 500

If light and portable is not what you are looking for, then raw power is what you want. You want the ultimate gaming laptop. You want the new Predator Helios 500.

The Predator Helios 500 that features a 17.3-inch display is more of a desktop replacement than a portable PC in its dress. In terms of design though, not much has changed from the older Helios 500 save for the arches on the back exhaust port. Keen eyed readers will also sport two power inlets.

That is because the Predator Helios 500 features an overclockable 11th Generation Intel Core i9 (up to) processor. Alongside the powerful processor is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU (up to) and up to 64GB of DDR4 (32GB x 2) RAM for good measure. The need for speed does not end there though. You get to slot in a pair (2) of NVMe PCIe SSDs in RAID 0 for the fastest experience. If you really need more space, there is space for a SATA drive.

The powerful internals give life to the 17.3-inch display. That large display pushes 4K UHD 2160p worth of pixels to you. The Mini LED panel also pushes 120Hz for the smoothest high-resolution experience you can get in a gaming notebook. With VESA Display HDR 1000 certification and AUO AmLED’s full-array local dimming technology, the Predator Helios 500’s display is a class above its competitors.

You need a lot to cool this powerhouse of a notebook too. You need two large 5th Generation Aeroblade fans with Vortex Flow technology to keep air rushing through the entire system. Thankfully also there is Acer’s PowerGem technology to help keep things manageable. On top of the fans is a full RGB keyboard with individual backlight control via PredatorSense. The WSAD keys can also be replaced with MagForce keys for more precise controls.

Predator Connect X5 5G CPE Router & Connect D5 5G Dongle

Alongside the Acer Predator Helios 500 and Predator Triton 500 SE, Acer also launched two Predator networking tools. With modern games needing constant internet connectivity, it does kind of make sense for Acer to launch new networking solutions for gamers. Of course, they released one product for home, and one product for life on-the-go.

Source: Acer

The Predator Connect X5 5G router is the first Intel Killer-compatible 5G CPE in the world. With 5G, you get up to 4.7 Gbps internet speeds. This one router can also work with up to 256 devices, in case you want to host a LAN party with as many devices around. With Wi-Fi 6 capabilities, all 256 devices are going to have an uninterrupted access to the internet and network.

Source: Acer

The Predator Connect D5 5G Dongle is exactly what it sounds like. It is a gaming focused 5G enabled dongle with Intel’s Killer Network solution. Plug the dongle into any USB 3.1 ports and you unleash the power of 5G on your Predator laptop. That also means you are going to be able to work on DOTA 2 with your squad even if you are constantly on the road.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Brilliant Diamond & Shinning Pearl Get Release Dates

Nintendo has been really busy behind the scenes. The company has been in the news with rumours of a more powerful, OLED equipped Nintendo Switch. However, the company’s biggest news came earlier in the year with the announcement of new entries into the current generation of Pokémon games.

Fans of the series have been anticipating remakes of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl for while now given the company’s previous release trends. The Pokémon Company and Game Freak have been releasing remakes of their original games since the third generation of games with Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen in 2004. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl feature updated graphics but continue to carry the charm of the original entries. Players are able to rediscover the Sinnoh region with details they’ve never seen before. The remake will be making its way to stores later this year on November 19, 2021.

The biggest announcement for the series since Pokémon Sword and Shield is the announcement of Pokémon Legends: Arceus. The game looks to be the series first foray into the open-world RPG arena. Players are taken back before the events of Diamond and Pearl to discover the Sinnoh region in a different time. The game throws players into the past before technology and all the wonders of the modern Pokémon world. Players will be exploring the region with three very different starters: Cyndaquill, Oshawott and Rowlet. If you’ve played or followed the series, you’ll realise that none of these starters is native to the Sinnoh region – or are they?

Unlike the remakes, there has been very little information revealing the events that will transpire in Legends: Arceus. However, after a taste of an open-world game in Sword and Shield’s “Wild Areas”, there are high expectations for Legends. With a Zelda: Breathe of the Wild aesthetic, the game is also one of the most beautiful games in the series so far. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is hitting shelves on January 28, 2022.

Blizzard Entertainment’s BlizzCon Skips 2021

Blizzard Entertainment’s BlizzCon is arguably one of the biggest gaming conventions held every year. However, last year, BlizzCon joined the plethora of conventions and trade shows that opted to not have their physical event. It looks like this year is the same.

The Executive Producer if BlizzCon, Saralyn Smith, made the announcement on a post on the official BlizzCon website. The main reason for the cancellation? The pandemic. Smith noted that the evolving regulations and situations surrounding the current pandemic have cause significant setbacks due to uncertainties. In the events industry, the uncertainties can be the largest pain to deal with.

Building an in-person BlizzCon is an epic and complex affair that takes many months of preparation—not just for us, but also for the many talented production partners, esports pros, hosts, entertainers, artists, and other collaborators we team up with locally and globally to put all of the pieces together. The ongoing complexities and uncertainties of the pandemic have impacted our ability to properly move forward on many of these fronts, and ultimately we’re now past the point where we’d be able to develop the kind of event we’d want to create for you in November.

Saralyn Smith, Executive Producer of BlizzCon

However, the cancellation of BlizzCon 2021 isn’t as sombre as it may seem. It looks like the conference will be taking a form similar to BlizzConline which took place earlier this year. Saralyn Smith notes that the team is already at work planning for the event to take place early next year. She also noted that the team is exploring having smaller, more contained in-person gatherings in addition to the online press conferences and sessions that BlizzConline had this year.

It looks like the community has to wait a little longer for news on Blizzard’s IPs which include Diablo, StarCraft, WarCraft and Overwatch. This year’s BlizzCon was anticipated to have updates for Diablo IV, Diablo Immortal, Overwatch 2 among others. While we have about another 10 months to wait for updates, Diablo fans have Diablo 2 Resurrected to look forward to this year.

Contrast Security’s State of Application Security in Financial Services Report Finds 75% of Application Security Budgets Are Rising in 2021 Due to Frequent Application Attacks

98% of financial services respondents admit they have experienced at least three successful application exploits in the last 12 months that have caused an operational disruption and/or a data breach leading to the increase in application security budgets

LOS ALTOS, Calif., May 27, 2021 — Contrast Security, a leader in modernizing application security, today announced the findings of its 2021 State of Application Security in Financial Services Report based on a comprehensive survey of development, operations, and security professionals and executives at enterprise-level financial services institutions. The report explores the state of application security at these organizations, and the findings indicate that the security of these applications — that have access and control over consumers’ finances — is not a priority or major concern for most of them.

With most attacks on financial services institutions executed at the application layer at a time when customers demand more digital services and customer-facing applications are developed in-house, application security is mission-critical. Methodologies like Agile and DevOps — and a growing use of open-source code and application programming interfaces (APIs) — have accelerated the development process, enabling financial institutions to speed up digital transformation initiatives that had been planned for months or years in the future. However, the financial services industry, including banking, insurance, and investment firms, has long been a target of cyber criminals, and this has only accelerated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

When multiple serious vulnerabilities are present in an application, cyber criminals have many opportunities to mount a successful attack. Almost all respondents (98%) admit that they have experienced at least three successful application exploits in the past year that have caused an operational disruption and/or a data breach. Astoundingly, more than half of organizations (52%) saw 10 or more successful attacks over 12 months. As a result, 99% of respondents in organizations with more than 15,000 employees peg the cost of each attack at $1 million or above.

The high rate of false positives combined with the lack of actionable information in scan reports creates a major time sink for both development and security teams. More than eight in 10 respondents (81%) say that their application security teams spend three or more hours per false positive to identify it as such. So, when a legitimate vulnerability is identified, 72% of respondents said their organization’s application security team spends six or more hours to triage, diagnose, and prioritize remediation for the development team. The baton then is passed to developers, who spend 10 or more hours per vulnerability to perform remediation and verification, according to 69% of respondents. With a scan report potentially containing hundreds of alerts, with a majority being false positives, these staff hours add up quickly for both the development and the security teams.

Given application security is an increasing concern for enterprises, 75% of respondents report that their application security budget is increasing in 2021, and 24% say that increase is more than 15%. Despite this emphasis on application security, only 40% of organizations place direct responsibility for application security under the CISO. So, while budgets are increasing at many organizations, some may not have a solid strategy in place to use those funds wisely. A crucial starting point will be to ensure security keeps up with the pace of development.

"It is clear that application security strategies have not matured at most of the financial services organizations represented in this survey," said Jeff Williams, CTO and co-founder at Contrast Security. "The good news for institutions looking to build out their strategy is that implementing a modern application security platform can dramatically accelerate their program and produce real improvement quickly. Instrumentation-powered application security can provide continuous security testing at massive scale, providing highly accurate feedback to developers in real time, empowering them to find and fix their own vulnerabilities without direct help from application security specialists."

The Contrast Application Security Platform uses instrumentation to observe, analyze, and protect software from within the application. In doing so, Contrast makes security continuous and integrates seamlessly with modern software — from development into production. In addition, this approach offers an unprecedented application security orchestration layer for financial services institutions to improve enterprisewide risk reporting and policy enforcement. Contrast Security has worked with financial services institutions of all types around the world. Customers include leading global Fortune 500 and financial industry regulatory enterprises.

Methodology:
This report is based on a comprehensive survey of business leaders, developers, and security professionals at financial services enterprises in North America. Conducted in April and May 2021, the survey sought to gauge the maturity of both the software development operations and application security programs, how organizations are using application security tools, and what outcomes they are seeing. The results of each question were analyzed for the whole cohort, and many answers were also grouped by background data like job title, company size, and application security methodology. From this analysis, we identified several insights about application development and security specific to the financial services vertical.

About Contrast Security:
