The digital landscape in Southeast Asia has evolved into a powerhouse of video-first commerce. We are witnessing a shift where the line between discovering a product and completing a purchase is becoming thinner by the day. At the recent Google Marketing Live summit in Singapore, Google addressed this transformation head-on, unveiling a suite of new tools designed to harmonize search intent with the massive, creator-led ecosystem of YouTube. For brands and marketers in the region, this is more than just a software update; it is a strategic move to turn passive viewing into active sales, all while grounded in the trust that audiences place in their favorite creators.

Commerce Media Suite: Frictionless Checkout
One of the most persistent challenges in video commerce has been the “friction” of the journey. A viewer sees a product in a video, becomes interested, clicks through, and then gets lost in a convoluted web of browser tabs or app redirects. The Commerce Media Suite is designed to eliminate this hurdle. By allowing brands with marketplace storefronts to route high-intent shoppers directly from a YouTube ad to a seamless checkout page, Google is effectively cutting out the noise. The system uses real-time shopping insights—analyzing what a user is currently searching for or what is sitting in their digital cart—to serve highly relevant, actionable advertisements. Early pilots with major players like Shopee have shown that this isn’t just theory; brands are seeing tangible, incremental lifts in revenue, proving that when you remove the barriers to checkout, conversion rates naturally follow.
Scaling Creator Influence with Creator Partnerships Boost
The creator economy in Southeast Asia is arguably the most vibrant in the world, largely because of the trust-based relationship between creators and their communities. Historically, the challenge for brands has been scale: an organic post from a creator only reaches their current followers. The new Creator Partnerships Boost tool changes that equation entirely. It allows brands to take a creator’s video content and promote it directly as a paid advertisement within their own broader campaigns. These ads run natively from the creator’s own handle, ensuring they feel authentic and fit seamlessly into the user’s feed. It allows brands to amplify the influence of a trusted voice to a much larger audience, driving higher engagement without sacrificing the “human” quality that makes influencer marketing effective in the first place.
Driving Affiliate Success with Affiliate Partnerships Boost
Building on the foundation of the YouTube Shopping Affiliate Program, where creators tag products directly in their content, Google is now introducing Affiliate Partnerships Boost. This is a global first being piloted right here in Southeast Asia. Retailers and marketplaces can now take the best-performing affiliate videos—the ones that are already converting viewers into customers—and boost them as paid ads. This creates a powerful dual benefit: marketplaces get their products in front of thousands of potential new customers, and creators gain a new, scalable stream of commission revenue. By turning high-converting affiliate content into paid media, brands can better optimize their spend based on actual, proven performance.
Streamlining Collaborations via YouTube Creator Partnerships
Finally, Google is making it easier for brands to find the right voices through its YouTube Creator Partnerships tool. Powered by AI-driven search, this platform allows marketers to cut through the noise by searching for creators based on specific keywords, trending categories, or audience demographics. It provides detailed analytics before any contract is even signed, giving brands the data they need to ensure the partnership aligns with their goals. While initially tested in Indonesia and Singapore, this tool is now expanding to more markets, including Malaysia, providing a robust, one-stop shop for brands to discover, collaborate, and measure the real-world business impact of their creator partnerships

While it may seem like Google is doubling down with creating video commerce related content, it shouldn’t negatively impact user experience on YouTube. Sapna Chadha, Vice President of Google Southeast Asia and South Asia, reiterated the company’s commitment to empowering the growing creator community and the diverse content they come up with. Instead, these tools are being rolled out as a means to help creators better monetize their content. That said, there is no confirmation from Google at the time of writing if purely AI generated content will be eligible to leverage these new tools.
