Malaysia’s telecommunication landscape underwent a major structural transformation with the introduction of the Dual 5G Network Model, opening the door for competitive infrastructure rollout across the country. Having been appoint as a key p[layer in the new DWN 5G network, U Mobile was faced with the challenge of rolling out a robust 5G network. When the telco kicked off its network rollout in July 2025, it made two clear and measurable commitments. It promised to achieve 80% Coverage of Populated Areas (CoPA) within the first 12 months, followed by a 90% coverage target by July 2027. U Mobile has completely shattered those expectations by reaching the 90% nationwide milestone more than 9 months ahead of schedule.

The milestone was officially announced at a high-profile event. The occasion was graced and officiated by YB Dato’ Seri Fahmi Fadzil, the Minister of Communications, alongside YB Teo Nie Ching, the Deputy Minister of Communications. This rapid achievement highlights the incredible speed and scale of U Mobile’s nationwide ULTRA5G deployment. The telco previously hit a major milestone in March 2026 by crossing the 80% coverage mark in less than nine months after its rollout began, beating its initial deadline by over three months. By hitting both targets well ahead of schedule, U Mobile has fully delivered on the coverage commitments that underpin its vital role in Malaysia’s competitive second network model.
Wong Heang Tuck, the Chief Executive Officer of U Mobile, shared his thoughts on reaching this historic benchmark. He explained that achieving 90% nationwide coverage ahead of schedule reflects the sheer determination of the entire team and the strong collaboration of government, regulatory, technology, and infrastructure partners. Wong emphasized that this achievement is about much more than just hitting a coverage percentage number. It is about bringing quality digital connectivity closer to more Malaysians and creating a stronger foundation for how people learn, work, communicate, and access new socio-economic opportunities.
This lightning-fast rollout has also earned widespread recognition from independent industry benchmarks and global experts. During 2026, Ookla named U Mobile as Malaysia’s Best Mobile Network and Fastest 5G Network. At the same time, Opensignal praised the telco for significant improvements across network reliability, overall quality, speed, and 5G experience. Earlier in the year, U Mobile even secured a prestigious spot in the Malaysia Book of Records for delivering the fastest 5G network rollout in the country. These independent accolades prove that deploying nationwide infrastructure at record speed does not compromise network performance or customer experience.
With its nationwide coverage target successfully achieved, U Mobile is looking ahead to the next phase of its digital evolution. The telco is focusing heavily on strengthening the reach and quality of its ULTRA5G services, including expanding its in-building coverage footprint. Having already fulfilled its first-year commitments for indoor spaces, U Mobile has now surpassed 250 indoor building coverage sites across the country to ensure stronger indoor connections in high-traffic locations. Furthermore, the company continues to advance innovative initiatives that help organizations harness cutting-edge tools like 5G-Advanced and artificial intelligence, actively supporting Malaysia’s ongoing digital transformation journey.
