The company has rolled out “Personal Computer,” a massive expansion of its software orchestration system that brings its AI capabilities directly onto your local machine. Rather than just answering questions, this new system is designed to act on your behalf, navigating your local files and native applications to complete complex, multi-step workflows.
The True Digital Proxy
The fundamental shift here is moving the AI from the cloud directly into your personal digital ecosystem. While you can trigger the assistant on any compatible Mac running macOS Sonoma or later, Perplexity explicitly designed the experience around the Mac mini. The idea is to leave the desktop running around the clock, effectively turning the hardware into a dedicated, always-on digital worker.
Because it ties deeply into macOS, Personal Computer can seamlessly access your local directories, Apple Mail, Calendar, and iMessage. You can summon the assistant anywhere by simply pressing both Command keys and giving it a natural language prompt. However, the real utility comes from its remote capabilities. If you are out running errands, you can use your iPhone to instruct the Mac sitting on your desk at home to execute a complex task.
For example, you can tell the system to read your messy Notes to-do list, and it will actively jump across your local files, connected applications, and the open web to actually complete those chores rather than just giving you a summary of what needs to be done. It can even take a completely disorganised Downloads folder and autonomously sort everything into clearly labelled project directories.
Security and Orchestration
Handing the keys to your entire file system over to an AI naturally raises massive privacy and security concerns. Perplexity is tackling this by ensuring you are always positioned as a manager, not a bystander. The system dynamically orchestrates tasks across more than twenty frontier models, but its actions remain entirely visible to the user. Every step it takes is heavily auditable and easily reversible if it makes a mistake.
Furthermore, the system executes file creation within a highly secure sandbox. If the AI starts moving in a direction you do not agree with, there is a dedicated kill switch that immediately halts all background activity, allowing you to step in and regain manual control. Sensitive operations also require explicit two-factor authentication approvals, ensuring the agent cannot finalise a major task without your direct oversight.

While standard Perplexity searches remain highly accessible to the public, having a dedicated digital worker is strictly a premium experience. Personal Computer is officially rolling out this week, but it is exclusively available to Perplexity Max subscribers. At a steep $200 per month, this tier is significantly more expensive than the standard $20 Pro plan. However, for power users and professionals who want to completely offload hours of tedious file management and data processing to an autonomous assistant, this launch represents the first genuine step toward a fully automated desktop.
