Cycling on open roads often feels like a game of trust with traffic you cannot see. Garmin has been addressing this anxiety for years with its Varia line, and the newly announced Varia RearVue 820 aims to refine that situational awareness further. This latest iteration isn’t just about flashing lights; it is about providing granular data on what exactly is creeping up behind you.
The core upgrade in the RearVue 820 lies in its advanced vehicle tracking capabilities. While previous models simply alerted riders to the presence of a car, this new unit attempts to categorise the threat. The radar can now detect the size of an approaching vehicle, distinguishing between small, medium, and large vehicles. This information is relayed visually to compatible Edge cycling computers or the Varia smartphone app, giving cyclists a better sense of whether they are being overtaken by a sedan or a semi-truck.
Beyond size, the radar tracks movement patterns more aggressively. It monitors side-to-side movement and calculates threat levels based on the approaching vehicle’s speed and path. It also features “same speed tracking,” which notifies riders about vehicles trailing them at a matching pace or waiting to pass, a scenario that often creates blind spots in rider awareness. The radar’s detection range remains impressive, capable of picking up vehicles from over 170 meters away, even across multiple lanes.
On the visibility front, Garmin claims this is its brightest radar tail light to date. The light is visible from over 2 kilometres away in daylight, ensuring that motorists see the cyclist long before the radar sees the car. It functions intelligently as a brake light, intensifying its brightness when the rider slows or stops to signal a change in pace to traffic behind. Users can cycle through various modes, including day flash, night flash, solid, and a peloton mode designed not to blind fellow riders in a group.
Endurance is critical for long rides, and the RearVue 820 offers respectable battery performance. It delivers up to 24 hours of operation in day flash mode and extends to 30 hours if used in radar-only mode. The physical design keeps modern standards in mind, featuring a USB-C charging port and a seat post mount compatible with most road and gravel bike setups.

The Garmin Varia RearVue 820 will be available for purchase in Malaysia starting March 2026 for RM 1,249.
