Suunto has officially launched the Suunto Vertical 2 in Malaysia, the next generation of its ultimate adventure watch. This new model builds on the rugged foundation and exceptional battery life of its predecessor, but introduces four significant hardware upgrades: a redesigned heart rate sensor, a faster processor, a built-in LED flashlight, and a much larger, brighter AMOLED display.
The New Hardware Upgrades
The most noticeable change is the display. The Vertical 2 now features a 1.5-inch AMOLED display with a sharp 466×466 resolution. This is a major step up in brightness and clarity, designed to keep maps and metrics clearly visible even under Malaysia’s strong sunlight.
To power this new display and improve the user experience, the watch has an upgraded processor and expanded memory, which Suunto says makes the interface faster and smoother. The optical heart rate sensor has also been “completely redesigned” for more accurate wrist-based measurements during training and health tracking.
Finally, the Vertical 2 adds a practical integrated LED flashlight into the bezel. This isn’t just a simple light; it offers adjustable brightness, a red-light mode for preserving night vision, and safety functions like SOS and pulse modes.
Core Adventure DNA: Battery and Navigation
While the new hardware is impressive, the Vertical 2 retains the core features that the series is known for. First is the battery life. Suunto claims the watch delivers up to 65 hours of GPS tracking in its most accurate dual-band mode and an exceptional 20 days of standard smartwatch use.
Navigation remains a key strength. The watch includes free, detailed offline maps that show contour lines, paths, and other terrain features, which is crucial for navigating areas with limited connectivity. This is paired with multi-band GPS for high accuracy and weather alerts to keep you safe from unpredictable tropical conditions.
Suunto’s software provides advanced navigation tools like Climb Guidance, which gives real-time elevation profiles and colour-coded route sections for hilly terrain, and Quick Start Navigation, which allows you to change routes on the fly without stopping your activity tracking.
Rugged Build and Smart Features
The Vertical 2 is built for demanding environments. It comes in two rugged variants: stainless steel or titanium. The watch maintains a practical, glove-friendly design with three side buttons for easy operation.
Beyond expeditions, the watch is a comprehensive daily tracker, offering 115 sport modes, advanced training analytics, and everyday health monitoring. It syncs with the Suunto app, which can connect to over 300 partner services, and can be further expanded with apps from the SuuntoPlus Store.
