DJI has officially unveiled the Osmo Action 6, and for the first time in the company’s action camera history, it moves away from a fixed aperture system. This latest iteration is designed to bridge the gap between rugged durability and professional-grade imaging, introducing a variable aperture and a new square sensor that promises to change how creators capture content for different platforms.
At the heart of the Osmo Action 6 is a new 1/1.1-inch square CMOS sensor. This sensor features 2.4 μm fusion large pixels and boasts a dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops. However, the standout feature is the inclusion of a variable aperture, adjustable between f/2.0 and f/4.0. This allows users significantly more control over exposure and depth of field. In Auto mode, the camera can automatically adapt to changing lighting conditions, opening up to f/2.0 for better low-light performance or closing down to f/4.0 for sharper landscapes.
The decision to use a square sensor unlocks a practical workflow feature DJI calls “4K Custom Mode”. Because the sensor is square, users can record footage and crop it later to fit any aspect ratio—whether it’s 16:9 for YouTube or 9:16 for TikTok—without needing to physically rotate the camera or lose image quality.
For low-light shooters, the Osmo Action 6 utilizes its larger sensor and aperture capabilities for a SuperNight mode, which supports detailed 4K/60fps recording with improved noise reduction. Additionally, a new Starburst mode has been added to enhance point light sources, creating star-shaped highlights that add a creative flair to night cityscapes.
On the performance front, the camera maintains DJI’s reputation for stabilization with RockSteady 3.0, HorizonBalancing, and HorizonSteady, ensuring footage remains level even with 360-degree rolls. For slow-motion enthusiasts, the device supports native 4K/120fps and can achieve up to 32x Super Slow Motion playback at 1080p through frame interpolation.
Durability and utility remain core to the design. The Osmo Action 6 carries an IP68 rating, making it waterproof up to 20 meters without a case and up to 60 meters with one. It also features a built-in color temperature sensor and pressure gauge for accurate underwater recording. Battery anxiety is addressed with up to 4 hours of battery life and fast-charging capabilities that hit 80% in just 22 minutes. Notably, the unit now includes 50GB of built-in storage, a welcome safety net for when SD cards run out.
