If you have been thinking about getting into vinyl but find the whole “setup ritual” intimidating, Sony’s latest announcement is aimed directly at you. The company has just introduced two new wireless turntables, the PS-LX3BT and PS-LX5BT, which seem determined to remove as much friction as possible from the analog experience. Both models are built around a “plug, pair, and play” philosophy, combining fully automatic operation with modern Bluetooth connectivity that supports high-quality codecs.
Sony PS-LX3BT
The PS-LX3BT is positioned as the entry point, designed for someone who wants to start spinning records without needing a degree in audio engineering. Its standout feature is its simplicity. It offers one-step fully automatic playback, meaning you press a single button, and the turntable automatically lowers the tonearm, finds the groove, and starts the music. When the record ends, the arm returns to its rest position on its own—a small convenience that saves you from running across the room to stop the needle from scratching endlessly in the run-out groove.
Under the hood, it features a belt-drive mechanism with an aluminum die-cast platter, designed to keep rotation stable. For connectivity, it supports Bluetooth with Qualcomm aptX, aptX Adaptive, and Hi-Res Wireless Audio, ensuring that going wireless doesn’t mean sacrificing too much detail. If you prefer a traditional wired connection, it comes with a built-in phono equalizer and an attached RCA cable, allowing you to plug it directly into powered speakers or an amplifier without needing a separate preamp.
Sony PS-LX5BT
Stepping up to the PS-LX5BT, you get a similar user-friendly experience but with upgraded components for better sound fidelity. It shares the same fully automatic operation and Bluetooth specs as its sibling but introduces a more rigid, vibration-resistant chassis. This “one-piece” body design is intended to suppress unwanted resonance, which is the enemy of clear vinyl playback.
The most significant difference lies in the cartridge and tonearm. The PS-LX5BT comes with a higher-grade Moving Magnet (MM) cartridge and a specifically tuned tonearm, which Sony claims delivers a richer sound with a wider soundstage. Unlike the fixed cable on the LX3BT, this model features gold-plated RCA output jacks, giving you the flexibility to use your own high-quality cables. It also sports a thicker rubber slip mat to further dampen vibrations.
Both turntables also feature a USB output with three-level gain control, allowing you to digitize your vinyl collection to a computer if you want to preserve your records digitally.
