Canon's EOS R6 Mark III is Here, Bringing a 32.5MP Sensor and 7K 60p RAW Video

Canon has just announced the new full-frame EOS R6 Mark III, the next evolution in its popular ‘6’ series line of mirrorless cameras. This new body isn’t just an incremental update; it’s a significant leap, especially for video creators, blending high-end performance with a versatile body.

Building on the success of the R6 Mark II, this new model is designed for storytellers who need to capture their craft with more precision and power. It launched alongside a new lens, the RF 45mm F1.2 STM, which Canon is positioning as its widest-aperture “non-professional” lens, aimed at making that f/1.2 bokeh more accessible.

But the camera is the main event. Here’s what it brings to the table.

Higher Resolution and Serious Speed

The first major change is the sensor. The EOS R6 Mark III moves up to a 32.5-megapixel full-frame sensor. For photographers, this means capturing finer details, but its main practical benefit is offering much more cropping flexibility. If you’re shooting subjects from a distance, that extra resolution gives you more freedom to punch in without a significant loss in quality.

Despite the higher processing load from the new sensor, the camera maintains its impressive speed. It still clocks in at 40 fps with the electronic shutter and 12 fps with the mechanical shutter. The buffer is also deep, capable of capturing approximately 150 shots in a single 40 fps burst.

A very user-friendly feature, the pre-continuous shooting mode, is also included. When enabled, the camera starts recording up to 20 continuous shots before you fully press the shutter button. This is a lifesaver for capturing split-second moments you might have otherwise missed, and it works in all still formats, including RAW and HEIF.

A Massive Leap in Video Features

While the stills upgrades are solid, the video department is where the R6 Mark III truly shines. The camera now supports 7K 60p internal RAW video recording to a CF Express Type B card.

Even more significant, especially for social media creators, is that the R6 Mark III is the first EOS R series camera to offer 3:2 Open Gate recording, supporting up to 7K 30p RAW. This is a huge deal. It uses the full height of the sensor, providing massive post-production flexibility to reframe a single shot for both horizontal 16:9 videos and vertical content from the same footage.

The workflow has also been considered. During 7K 60p RAW recording to the CF Express card, the camera can simultaneously record a smaller MP4 proxy file or a 4K DCI Fine MP4 sub movie to its SD card slot. This makes editing much faster, as you can use the lightweight proxies and link back to the high-res RAW files for the final export.

The list of pro-level tools is extensive. Recording formats now include Canon Log 2 and HLG, in addition to the existing Canon Log 3 and HDR PQ. It also inherits support for Cinema EOS Custom Picture (CP) profiles and professional monitoring tools like waveform, false colours, and zebras to nail your exposure on set. You can even import custom LUTs directly into the camera via the Camera Connect smartphone app.

A new “Shockless WB” feature also ensures seamless white balance transitions during recording, whether you’re using AWB or adjusting it manually.

Smarter AF and Familiar Ergonomics

The autofocus system gets an upgrade with enhanced algorithms for more tenacious subject tracking. It also inherits the Register People Priority function from the flagship EOS R1. This allows you to pre-register specific people, and the camera will prioritise detecting and tracking them, which is incredibly useful for shooting events, concerts, or team sports.

In terms of build, the EOS R6 Mark III retains the durable body design and operability of its predecessor. It features enhanced button customisation and improved ergonomics for handheld vertical shooting. It uses the familiar LP-E6P battery pack and supports the BG-R20/BG-R20EP battery grip for longer shoots.

Canon’s “Drive Your Dream” Campaign

Coinciding with the launch, Canon is running a massive nationwide “Drive Your Dream” campaign from 1 November 2025 to 31 January 2026. Anyone who purchases a participating Canon camera or lens from an authorised store is eligible to enter.
