As the global push for artificial intelligence and cloud computing accelerates, the physical infrastructure required to keep these digital systems running is expanding rapidly. Leveraging Malaysia’s growing position as a central digital hub in the ASEAN region, global digital infrastructure company Equinix has officially announced plans to build a massive new data centre in Cyberjaya. Dubbed KL2, this purpose-built facility represents a significant long-term commitment to the country’s digital economy and is specifically engineered to handle the intense demands of modern enterprise workloads.
Located strategically in Cyberjaya, the new KL2 facility will sit less than a kilometre away from Equinix’s existing KL1 data centre. This proximity is deliberate, designed to further strengthen the company’s existing ecosystem of cloud platforms, network providers, and multinational enterprises. The scale of this new project is substantial. Backed by a total investment exceeding 190 million US dollars, the KL2 data centre will be capable of housing more than 2,200 cabinets once it reaches full operational capacity.

What makes this new facility particularly noteworthy is its focus on next-generation computing requirements. Training and deploying artificial intelligence, particularly high-performance computing workloads, generates an incredible amount of heat. To address this, a substantial portion of the KL2 facility’s total capacity is purposefully designed to support advanced liquid cooling solutions. This capability is critical, as it allows hyperscalers and digital-native companies to safely run high-density Distributed AI architectures without overheating their hardware.
Furthermore, the facility will be directly integrated into Equinix’s global network footprint, connecting sites across Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Singapore via Equinix Fabric. Customers will also be able to leverage Fabric Intelligence, a system that utilises AI-driven insights to dynamically optimise network routing and bandwidth, ensuring that massive data transfers occur securely and efficiently across the region.
The timing of this expansion aligns perfectly with Malaysia’s national digital ambitions. The development directly supports government-led initiatives such as the MyDIGITAL blueprint and the newly launched National Artificial Intelligence Office. Cheam Tat Inn, the Managing Director of Equinix Malaysia, emphasised that providing AI-ready infrastructure locally will enable businesses to process their data closer to the source. He noted that this expansion will not only support the rapid deployment of Distributed AI but also drive high-value job creation and build long-term economic resilience for the nation.
Despite the massive power requirements of a modern data centre, Equinix is aiming to keep the environmental footprint of KL2 as minimal as possible. The company is engineering the facility to target 100% renewable energy coverage from its very first day of operation. This ambitious green initiative aligns closely with the industry’s Sustainable Digital Infrastructure Accord and Equinix’s broader global goal to achieve complete renewable energy coverage across its entire retail footprint by the year 2030.
