If you feel like your streaming recommendations are slowly being taken over by soulless tracks from bands that do not actually exist, you are not alone. Spotify is currently battling an influx of AI-generated music—often referred to as “slop”—created by individuals using artificial intelligence tools to quickly pump out massive amounts of content strictly for profit. To help users cut through the noise and identify authentic creativity, the streaming platform is officially rolling out a new “Verified by Spotify” badge.

A Checkmark for Human Creativity
This new verification system is designed to clearly show listeners that the music they are enjoying is not AI-generated. The premise is refreshingly straightforward: the badge acts as an indicator that the artist behind the music is a real person, effectively functioning as an aggressive anti-AI measure. When the rollout begins over the coming weeks, the new visual checkmark will appear directly next to the verified artist’s name. Crucially, Spotify has explicitly clarified that AI-generated artists and artificial bands are currently completely barred from applying for this verification status, cutting them out of the equation entirely.
Earning the Verification
To actually earn this coveted checkmark, an artist must meet a strict set of requirements to prove their legitimacy. First, they must demonstrate a consistent history of activity, which applies to both their own output and the genuine engagement from their listeners. Secondly, the artist must strictly adhere to all of Spotify’s internal platform policies. Finally, they have to definitively prove to the streaming company that they are actual, real-world people. If all three of these core requirements are met, the artist will be granted the verification checkmark.

The Ongoing Battle Against Automated Music
While this is a massive step forward in helping listeners avoid automated content farms, it is clear that managing the sheer volume of artificial music will require ongoing effort. Spotify has noted that it will continue to develop its approach over time, which has raised some concerns that the platform might eventually verify AI artists if the technology becomes too widespread to avoid. For now, however, the “Verified by Spotify” badge serves as a highly practical tool for fans who want to ensure their streams are supporting actual human musicians rather than a profit-driven algorithm.
