Smartwatches running Google’s Wear OS have traditionally demanded a frustrating compromise: you gain access to a robust ecosystem of apps and intelligent assistants, but you sacrifice endurance, often resigning yourself to nightly charging rituals. With the global launch of the Xiaomi Watch 5 at the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, Xiaomi is attempting to engineer its way out of this dilemma. By pairing Google’s latest wearable software with a sophisticated dual-chip architecture and entirely new sensor technology, the company is aiming to deliver a flagship wrist-worn experience that does not need to be tethered to a wall outlet every twenty-four hours.

Designed to Be Premium
At first glance, the Xiaomi Watch 5 is clearly positioned as a premium timepiece. The device moves away from utilitarian fitness tracker aesthetics, adopting a classic unibody 316L stainless steel frame. It features a 1.54-inch AMOLED display surrounded by ultra-narrow bezels, resulting in a clean, edge-to-edge visual experience. That display is capable of pushing a peak brightness of 1,500 nits, ensuring legibility even under harsh, direct sunlight. To protect the hardware from the inevitable knocks and scrapes of daily wear, Xiaomi has equipped the watch with double-sided synthetic sapphire crystal glass, covering both the front display and the rear health sensors.
The real story, however, lies beneath the glass. The Xiaomi Watch 5 runs natively on Google’s new Wear OS 6. This integration means users get seamless, wrist-based access to the core Google ecosystem, including Google Maps for navigation, Google Wallet for contactless NFC payments, and the Play Store for third-party applications. Crucially, it is also the first Xiaomi smartwatch to feature Google Gemini built directly into the system. This allows for complex, hands-free artificial intelligence assistance, letting users dictate messages, ask contextual questions, or control smart home devices without ever needing to pull their connected smartphone out of their pocket.

Wear OS 6 with a Twist
Running a heavy operating system like Wear OS usually drains batteries rapidly, which brings us to Xiaomi’s dual-chip solution. The watch utilises a brain-splitting strategy, pairing the high-performance Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 processor with a BES2800 low-power co-processor. When you are actively scrolling through menus, using apps, or interacting with Gemini, the Snapdragon chip handles the heavy computational lifting to ensure smooth animations. When the watch is idle or merely monitoring background health metrics, the low-power chip takes over. This tag-team approach, combined with a high-density 930mAh silicon-carbon battery, allows the watch to achieve up to six days of battery life in its standard smart mode, and an impressive 18 days when switched to power saver mode.
Beyond standard touchscreen interactions, the Xiaomi Watch 5 introduces a fascinating new method of control through its built-in electromyography, or EMG, sensor. Unlike traditional motion sensors that rely on the physical swinging of your arm, the EMG sensor actually detects the minute electrical signals produced by your wrist muscles when you move your fingers. This allows for highly precise, touch-free gesture controls. Users can pinch twice or rub their fingers together to dismiss incoming calls, silence alarms, or trigger a remote camera shutter. The system also supports customizable gestures like snapping your fingers or rotating your wrist to launch specific applications like YouTube Music, making one-handed operation significantly more reliable when you are carrying groceries or holding onto a subway rail.

Health and fitness tracking remain a core focus, with the device offering over 150 dedicated sports modes alongside dual-band GNSS location services for accurate outdoor route mapping without relying on a smartphone. For everyday wellness, the watch features a one-tap health check function that measures heart rate, blood oxygen levels, stress, and sleep patterns within a single 60-second window. It also incorporates a Class II medical-grade ECG sensor, providing users with a deeper, more clinical understanding of their cardiovascular health straight from their wrist.
Pricing & Availability
The Xiaomi Watch 5 is set to hit the global market shortly after its Barcelona debut. For international consumers, the smartwatch will be available in two distinct and sophisticated colourways: a classic Black and an elegant Juniper Green.
The device carries an official retail price of €299 (approximately RM 1,375) for the standard Bluetooth model in the European market.
While exact Malaysian availability dates have yet to be confirmed, Xiaomi is expected to bring the wearable to local official stores and authorised partner retailers in the coming weeks. Early promotional bundles in select regions are slated to include complimentary gifts such as wireless earbuds or compact massage guns for early adopters who purchase the device during its initial launch window.
