The new soundbar, as mentioned, offers 3.1 channel surround sound audio. It does this without an accompanying subwoofer though. Sony has started offering their subwoofers separately, we think it is in a bid to make their soundbars more affordable and more attractive to high-density residence homeowners.
Still, that should not be too much of an issue with Sony’s HT-S2000 soundbar. It is still programmed with a powerful but small woofer module built into the soundbar itself. If you do wish to get an accompanying subwoofer, you can pair it with Sony’s existing SA-SW3 or SA-SW5 subwoofers.
Even without the subwoofer, the HT-S2000 offers Dolby Atmos surround sound experience for rich and immersive movies. It also offers DTS: X audio algorithm for clear and crisp audio experience. Sony has also fitted the soundbar with a Vertical Sound Engine and S-Force PRO technology. Both the technology combines and offers a rich, three-dimensional audio experience, even if you are playing contents with stereo audio.
Within the HT-S2000 soundbar, you can find Sony’s highly acclaimed X-balanced speaker units that offer soundstage like no other. You get clear trebles and mids with the speaker units. That also means that dialogues in movies are much cleaner and clearer than before. The driver units are also engineered to work with higher pressures for more punchy, detailed low-end sounds, even without a subwoofer. That means more boom without crackles.

CES 2021 saw LG release their most compact soundbar yet. They announced the Eclair QP5 soundbar to the world in July of 2021. Sadly, the soundbar has not made its way into Malaysia yet at the time of launch. In some sense, it is a two-year-old product. At the same time, it is still one of LG’s more anticipated products for Malaysia.
The LG Eclair QP5 is not the most compact soundbar there is, but it is still one of the most compact soundbar you can find in the market. Even at its rather compact construction, the LG Eclair QP5 still offers a lot of power at up to 320W. It offers 3.1.2 channel of audio to really push on the surround sound capability of the soundbar.
The soundbar that comes with a subwoofer set-up is tuned by Meridian for the best possible audio reproduction a compact soundbar can get. It is also Dolby Atmos and DTS:X certified, so you can be sure that your movie and music experience is one of the best and most accurate you can find in its range.
As mentioned before, the LG Eclair offers 4K pass-through for optimized 4K and HDR contents with Dolby Vision. LG’s AI Sound Pro also analyses the contents being displayed and automatically tunes the soundbar to optimise the sounds and contents. With eARC on the HDMI port, the LG Eclair is capable of taking on transmission of 5.1-channel or 7.1-channel audio. If you have an LG TV produced from 2021 onward, you benefit from TV Mode Share that cleverly combines the processing power of LG’s proprietary α processors and AI Sound Pro to enrich sounds from any content source. The LG Eclair QP5 compact soundbar is now available in Malaysia. You can get your hands on one or even test them out at LG’s authorized dealers and stores across the nation. Sadly, there are no colour options to speak of. You can only get your hands on the black colour option. At MYR 2,799, it is not what you want to call budget-friendly too. SONOS is no stranger to cinematic sound. The company has already released two soundbars – the SONOS Beam and the SONOS Arc. It’s now adding a new, more affordable option to its lineup with the SONOS Ray.

The new SONOS Ray is the company’s most compact soundbar to date. It’s also the most feature rich 3.0.0 soundbar in the lineup. The sound bar is only 55.9cm long and 95mm wide which allows it to blend in seamlessly into any room. In fact, it’s only 7.1 cm tall so you can even slot it into the small shelves in your living room or room centre console. Aesthetically, the SONOS Ray comes with SONOS’s signature, minimalist design with a perforated grill in two colours: Black and White.
The SONOS Ray inherits a lot of design cues from previous SONOS soundbars. It has LEDs embedded in its minimalist design for power and connectivity indication. Also along for the ride is the capacitive touch buttons we have grown used to in SONOS soundbars.
Aesthetics aside, the crux of the Ray lies in the audio innovations that allow it to immerse users into the content they’re consuming. It comes with SONOS’s proprietary bass reflex system which complements the professionally tuned sound that SONOS is known for. The Ray comes with two tweeters and two mid-woofers which complement the bass reflex system. It also has four Class-D digital amplifiers that have been tuned for the soundbar’s unique acoustic design. The hardware itself has been expertly tuned by SONOS’s soundboard – a collective of some of the audio industry’s top experts.
SONOS isn’t just letting the hardware do all the work. It’s also complementing the hardware with software features in the SONOS S2 application. Using the app, users can customise the sound profile of the SONOS Ray to fit their unique tastes. In fact, for the best audio experience with the Ray, users can use TruePlay in the app to calibrate the sound stage. This feature is only available on iOS for now. That said, both Android and iOS users are able to take advantage of features like Night Sound which dampens the sound stage so you don’t wake your sleeping child and Speech enhancement which lifts vocal audio and dialogue in your movies and series so you don’t miss out on anything said.
You get a lot of the same connectivity when it comes to the SONOS Ray. IT is able to connect to WiFi networks on the 2.4GHz band with support for 802.11a/b/g/n standards. It also is able to connect via Ethernet. However, unlike the Arc and the Beam, the Ray only connects through optical connectivity. There is no HDMI, USB or Aux support. According to SONOS, this allows the sound bar to be compatible with televisions released over the past 15 years. That said, it is more than likely that we’ll be seeing accessories to allow you to connect to the soundbar via HDMI etc in the near future.
Pricing & Availability
The SONOS Ray will be retailing for MYR1,799 in Malaysia. Internationally it will be priced at USD$279 in the US, CAD$329 in Canada, GBP£279 in the UK and EUR€299 in Europe.

Welcome to the Razer Leviathan V2, the follow-up to the highly acclaimed Razer Leviathan launched about seven years ago now. Like it predecessor, it also comes with a subwoofer box in the box. You might be fine without the subwoofer box though.
Compact, Powerful, Immersive
It packs two full range drivers to drive everything from the mid-range frequencies to the higher end ones. To give better clarity and detail on the higher-end frequencies though, Razer has also fitted two tweeters to accompany the full range drivers. To ensure that audio sounds full, especially in gaming, you must have big booms. For that, you get two down-firing subwoofers that brings some rumble to your desk when you need it.
You might think that having the speaker in front of you might take out some of its immersive feel. True, you do not have rear firing speakers to feed some spatial awareness into your ears. This soundbar comes with THX Spatial Audio technology though and is activated when you connect it to a PC. That also means that you get a virtual surround sound experience like no other on your gaming PC.
Visually Stunning and Versatile
To add to the visual drama, Razer fitted this soundbar with 18 lighting zones powered by Razer Chroma RGB. You can match the light works with your other Razer gear via Synapse, or even make your games for immersive by matching the lights to whatever you see on your screen.
It is also a rather versatile piece of kit to have on your desk. Like the older Leviathan, the V2 is also a wireless speaker when you want it to be. Samsung has been busy over the last year learning from the release of its Neo QLED, Lifestyle and Micro LED screens. They’ve been looking at trends and features that will help augment and enhance the user experience across the board when it comes to their displays. It looks like they’ve also taken some user and review feedback into consideration in the upcoming generation of displays. Also, Samsung has created one of the slimmest soundbars coming to a store near you.
Samsung’s Micro LED TVs Get Better Colour Accuracy, Slimmer Bezels and Better Brightness Control
Samsung’s Micro LED TVs are leading their line up with new enhancements that bolster the viewing experience of the TVs. The TVs come with better colour accuracy and more accurate control of brightness and colour levels. The new generation of Micro LED TVs come with over 1 million steps of brightness and colour levels. This improvement will be crucial in providing an even more true to life experience when viewing HDR content. In addition to this, the lineup covers 100% of the DCI and Adobe RGB colour gamuts. Samsung is also upping the ante when it comes to bezels as the new generation comes with a 99.99% screen-to-body ratio. That’s virtually no bezel!

The hardware enhancements are just the tip of the iceberg, the new generation Micro LED TVs will also be coming with Art Mode which we’ve seen exclusively in the company’s lifestyle TVs until now. Users are able to make their TVs blend seamlessly into their decor by turning the screen into stunning art pieces. It will also have an improved Multi View mode which allows users to view content from multiple HDMI slots in 4K resolution at up to 120fps.
The new lineup of Micro LED TVs will be available in three sizes, 89-, 101- and 110-inch.
Neo QLED TVs Get A New Neo Quantum Processor & More Immersive Sound
Samsung’s Neo QLED TV offerings are getting a new processor which allows its Neo QLED TVs to provide an even more immersive experience. The new Neo Quantum Processor brings a few more features that elevate the viewing experience. All the features address issues that were raised in the past by reviewers and customers.
The new Samsung Neo Quatum Processor is introducing advanced contrast mapping with back-light unit (BLU). This allows for finer control of brightness levels; increased from a 12-bit gradation to a 14-bit gradation. This translates to 16,384 steps or quadruple the 4096 of the previous generation. The increased control of the Quantum Mini LEDs will ensure your eyes don’t get blown out by the sudden whiteouts in movies while watching.

Together with this, the new processor also enables what Samsung calls “Shape Adaptive Light”. This feature will utilise the Neo Quantum Processor to analyse lines, shapes and surfaces to control the shape of light from the Quantum Mini LEDs. This will, supposedly, increase the brightness and accuracy of shapes on screen enhancing the HDR experience on Neo QLED TVs. The TVs will also feature a Real Depth Enhancer, an multi-intelligence algorithm that will make things appear more realistic on screen.
Samsung is also leveraging AI technology to help reduce eye strain. It’s EyeComfort mode automatically optimises the screen’s brightness using data from the built-in light sensor and sunset-sunrise information. This allows the processor to lower brightness based on ambient light information and decrease blue light emissions accordingly. Samsung has also improved Object Tracking Sound (OTS). OTS Pro incorporates a new set of upfiring speakes to create a more immersive soundscape.
Together with the new lineup of Soundbars, Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs will provide an immersive soundscape that will immerse viewers in their content. Q Symphony will also be supported wirelessly in 2022. The wireless Dolby Atmos connectivity will allow for a more adaptable setup for any room. The new HW-S800B spearheads the soundbar offerings as the first Ultra Slim soundbar.
Lifestyle TVs Mattified
Samsung’s line up of Lifestyle TVs are all getting matte displays. The new display finish reduces smudges, glare and reflectivity of the screens allowing for a more comfortable experience. In fact, The Sero, The Frame and The Serif are all triple certififed from UL (Underwriter Laboratories) for being ‘Reflection Glare Free’, ‘Discomfort Glare Free’ and ‘Disability Glare Free’. Multi View on The Sero is getting an upgrade. It will now work even in vertical mode. This will allow you to simulataneously view two sources on the top and bottom portions of the screen.
The Serif is getting a larger, 65-inch option in addition to its 43-inch and 55-inch options. The Frame is available in sizes ranging from 32-inches to 85-inches.
SmartHub Brings Game Streaming, NFTs & Emotional Connection
SmartHub is getting a little bit of a redesign this year. The redesign brings the focus back to content curation with content discovery front and center. The sidebar is also more streamlined. Users will be able to seamlessly jump between Media, Gaming Hub and Ambient sections to navigate their content. Together with this, SmartHub is also getting smart calibration which will optimise your settings for the best picture quality. Basic calibration will take 30 seconds while Professional mode will optimise in about 10 minutes.

The visual upgrade also brings along a new NFT platform where you’ll be able to display, discover and purchase NFTs. Gaming Hub is also getting a new upgrade with more content coming to the platform. Samsung has partnered with NVIDIA GeForce Now, Google Stadia and Utomik to bring AAA titles and other top tier games to their TVs. You’ll also be able to take advantage of higher refresh rates in Neo QLED TVs. You’ll also be able to watch your favourite shows while on video chat with your loved ones – making the distance between that much closer.
Together with the additions to SmartHub, Samsung’s TV catalogue is getting a new Auto Rotating Wall Mount and Stand. This will bring the viewing experience of The Sero across all the whole TV line up for 2022. The mount will allow you to mirror vertical screens seamlessly. The accessory is also getting a dedicated rotate button on Samsung’s remote control.

What most do not realise though is that LG is also one of the most foremost manufacturers in the world of home and high-end audio. Combine their knowhow in making great audio products and immersive technology, and you have some of the best sound bars money can buy. The sound bars that LG makes are not just great sounding though. They look amazing and they can fit any home décor.
They just announced their new compact sound bar that is the LG Éclair QP5. It is tiny, a mere 296mm in width. It is only a third of the width of LG’s previously most compact soundbar that is the SP8YA. Comparing it to regular sound bars, it might as well be a quarter the size.

They have just introduced their new line-up of soundbars for 2021. Of course, they come with even more features and before to really complete your audio experience. They also still come with everything that made the older soundbars great too. For one, you still get Meridian technology.
LG’s new 2021 soundbars introduces Meridian’s Horizon technology though. The technology cleverly mixes regular dual channel to virtually create a multichannel experience for true immersion when it comes to music and even movies regardless of their position. Meridian’s technology and tuning also shines in the soundbar’s Music Mode.
The LG soundbars for 2021 now supports Dolby Atmos and DRS:X audio. That also means you get more dynamic audio and immersion from the soundbars. If you have a Dolby Vision certified 4K TV, the soundbars adjust themselves to optimise audio and picture experience. Your Netflix set-up at home just got even better.

It’s got a minimalist feel with an industrial finish but you wouldn’t be able to tell from a distance thanks to the black colour.
You can tell that Samsung’s design team has put some thought into the aesthetics of the whole living space when it comes to the Q800T Soundbar. It is able to fit under newer QLED and Smart TVs but, more importantly, it has a small enough footprint that you’ll be able to integrate it into your living space effortlessly. You also have the option of mounting the soundbar on the wall if you so please.
The only design cue that felt a little dated is the wire mesh design that has become somewhat of a signature for Samsung’s soundbar design. It’s a very retro feel which hearkens back to the radios and boom boxes of yesteryear. While it does seem a little dated, it does lend itself to a much sturdier feel overall.
Samsung also bundles a wireless sub-woofer which brings the lows to complement the highs and mids of the main soundbar. While it can seem a little tedious to have an extra component to maneuver and assimilate, into your decor, the sleek black design allows you to place it just out of sight and still get the full benefit of theatrical sound.
Performance
The Q800T packs quite the punch when it comes to sound. In smaller living spaces and rooms, the soundbar is bound to provide a really immersive experience. It was able to flood our studio space of about 1,300sqft with good sound. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if it was able to accommodate a larger room of about 2,000sqft.
When it comes to the sound quality, the Q800T was pretty impressive. It had very warm mids and highs which made watching cinematic movies enjoyable. The bass on the system was able to carry the explosions in action flicks pretty well too. Overall, it gave a deeper level of immersion when it came to enjoying movies and series.
The soundbar was able to produce really clear audio even when it came to audio. In fact, in its “Voice” mode, the soundbar was able to detect and enhance the audio of news readers which made it a lot easier to hear. This was also true for movies; dialogue was crisp and even whispers were more audible. You rarely miss anything said during movies even when there’s explosions happening.
Our highlight with soundbar came when we were using the PlayStation 4, the sound really brought Horizon Zero Dawn to live. The Dolby Atmos calibration made it so the sounds that we heard felt like we were in the game itself. Objects and creatures behind us in game actually sounded like they were behind us when we were gaming.
Features
The Samsung Q800T soundbar is one of the most feature rich soundbars available. It comes with Dolby Atmos certification as well as DTS:X certification. This means that the tweeters, subs and DSP on the soundbar has been uniquely tuned to be able to reproduce high quality audio to the standards set by Dolby and DTS.
In addition to that, the soundbar is also equipped with an equalizer. You’ll be able to control it manually and cycle through the presets on the controller which comes with the soundbar. However, if you want more granular control, you’ll have to adjust the levels on the SmartThings App.
The hallmark feature on the Q800T is Q-Symphony which synchronises the TV’s built-in speakers to create even more sound depth. It effective adds another two channels to the overall sound setup allowing for better immersion.
Compatibility
The Samsung Q800T soundbar runs on Samsung’s SmartThings platform which is a good thing. All you have to do to set it up on your phone is download the app on your phone and let it do it’s magic – which includes setting up the WiFi on the Q800T as well. Of course, you can manually connect to the speaker through Bluetooth as well and do the setup step by step. However, SmartThings really makes setup a once click step. In addition, the app is universally available – even on the iOS AppStore.
In fact, Samsung’s SmartThings platform also makes it so you can use Bixby to control and play music on your soundbar from your Samsung phone. If your on your Samsung device, you can also connect seamlessly via the SmartThings apps and set your system to automatically connect to the device and playback audio when its in range.
However, be that as it may, the Samsung centric nature of the Q800T is also its biggest handicap. You can’t get the most from the device or the SmartThings platform unless you’re in the Samsung ecosystem; this includes a Samsung QLED TV and a Samsung tablet or smartphone. In fact, one of the hallmark features, Q-Symphony, of the soundbar isn’t readily available unless you have a compatible Samsung QLED TV.
The Q-Symphony feature is actually one of the best features on the soundbar. Thankfully, we got to test it during a technical seminar. In a nutsell, you get an even more immersive sound experience as the speakers on the TV itself sync with the soundbar as front firing speakers complementing the 3.1.2 setup of the soundbar. However, if you’re not using a compatible Samsung QLED TV, you’ll miss out on the extra level of immersion.
A Feature Rich Sound Experience for a Relatively Affordable Price
Overall, the Samsung Q800T soundbar delivers one of the most immersive experiences you can get at it’s MYR3,999 (USD$987.64) price point. In fact, we can say that it’s one of the more complete offering on the market at this time. The unique, feature rich approach Samsung is taking to the soundbar makes a compelling package let down by one handicap – over reliance on a Samsung QLED TV. Other than the lack of Q-Symphony support on every other smart TV, the universality of SmartThings and the quality of the sound produced by the soundbar leaves users wanting little more.
