New Pokémon Legends Z-A & Pokémon TCG Pocket Announced for Pokémon Day

Happy Pokémon Day trainers! Nintendo took to the internet today to let us know what to expect in the coming year when it comes to Pokémon… and we like what we see. Of course, it seems like Creatures Inc., The Pokémon Company and Nintendo might be taking it a little bit easy for 2024… or maybe they’ve got something they’re not telling us just yet. That said, this year isn’t without excitement. Let’s break down what they announced.

New Content for Current Games

They kicked things off with the announcement of a number of Terra Raids coming to Paldea. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will get Terra Raids featuring the Kanto starters: Blastoise, Venusaur and Charizard. This would be the second time Charizard is being featured. Things will be kicking off with Venusaur on February 28 2024. Blastoise will be featured starting March 6 2024 and Charizard will return on March 13, 2024. Each will be available for roughly 5 days.

The Legendary Beasts will be making their way to Pokémon Sleep. Raikou will be leading the pack in March 2024 with its Entei and Suicune coming soon. Speaking of Legendaries, Koraidon and Miraidon will also be heading to Pokémon Cafe Remix. You’ll be able to get one of them to stay at your cafe during the limited-time distribution. Miraidon will also be heading to Pokémon UNITE together with Ceruledge and Falinks. Miraidon will be available as a 3-day limited license. Cafe Remix will also be featuring Gimmighoul coins for certain puzzles.

Pokémon’s stable of games will also be having in-game events to commemorate the Pokémon Day celebrations. Pokémon GO will be spearheading the celebrations with a tie-in with the Pokémon Horizons anime. Pikachu wearing Cap’s hat will be making its debut. It will also introduce the move Volt Tackle to the game. Together with Pikachu, Charcadet, Ceruledge and Armarouge will be making their debut. Don’t be surprised if Liko and Roy show up in your pictures either! New Sync pairs will also be joining Pokémon Masters EX. Geeta and her Glimmora and Silver and his Tyranitar lead the charge of Sync Pairs.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket

It looks like the Pokémon Trading Card Game is getting a brand new app experience. Literally less than a year after the release of Pokémon TCG Live, the Pokémon Company and Creatures Inc. are looking to release another version of the app that will bring more features and a more social aspect to the digital experience.

The new TCG Pocket app will be developed in collaboration with DeNA. From the direct, we could gather that the trio of collaborators are looking to make a more well rounded experience including an immersive virtual experience with things like extended card art and immersive artwork. Not much has been revealed but we’re looking forward to see how they plan to change the experience yet again.

Pokémon Legends Z-A

Pokemon Legends Z A Logo EN png jpgcopy

Of course, they buried the lead during the Pokémon Direct! The highlight was the promise of returning to Kalos! Not only were we left hanging with the absence of Pokémon Z, Mega Evolutions have been sorely missed. In an announcement trailer at the tail end, Nintendo announced that we’d be gearing up for an Urban redesign of Lumoise City, the largest city in the Kalos region. This will be happening in the second entry into the Legends series – Pokémon Legends Z-A.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A releases simultaneously worldwide in 2025!

It goes without saying that we’re more than expecting some exploration of Zygarde and its origins in the game. However, we’ve got a little bit of a tease for Mega Evolution which will undoubtedly be coming back in the game. The game is set for release in 2025 so we’re amped to learn more over the year.

A Case of Pikachu and the Unowns

With everything announced, there was a small question of Pikachu and the Unowns. At the beginning of the stream, Pikachu is seen running across the screen with several Unowns. If you’ve forgotten, the Unowns are Pokémons that are designed around the alphabet. In the stream, Pikachu was followed by a group of Unown arranged in two lines: E,K,O,P,E,O,N,S / P,E,T,R,N,S,M. Pikachu returned at the end with another group of Unowns arranged in a single line: S,O,E,Y,U,E; A question mark (?) Unown was trailing behind.

Pokémon TCG Live Is Finally Ready for Primetime

Pokémon is on high octane with its current lineup of releases; the franchise is expecting its first expansion for its mainline games: Pokémon Scarlet and Violet in a few months. It seems like that’s not all, though, the new iteration of their Trading Card Game is poised for an official debut both digitally and physically.

Pokemon TCG Live Horizontal Key Art May 2023 png jpgcopy

Announced back in 2021, Pokémon TCG Live is finally ready for primetime. The game revamps the Pokémon Trading Card’s digital experience and brings it into the future. The Pokémon Company is updating the visuals and effects of the Pokémon Trading Card Game to come up to date with more experiences. At the same time, it is also retiring the original Pokémon Trading Card Game Online app.

That said, the Pokémon TCG Live has had a few hiccups in its rollout. It faced a delay back in 2021. However, the game did enter open beta in November 2022. Finally, the new app will be making its way out of beta and into the wild on June 8, 2023. The new app brings a whole new level of personalisation with a whole new experience with customizable avatars. TCG Live also brings attacks and moves to life in new ways. Players will also be able to digitize their physical cards with codes that come in physical booster packs. Those coming from the older app will be able to link their old account and bring their old card collections with some restrictions.

Pokémon TCG Live will be available together with the new expansion of the official trading card game – Scarlet & Violet – Paldea Evolved. The new expansion brings the new Pokémon from the latest region in the franchise, Paldea, to the card game. This means that Pokémon like box legendaries, Koraidon and Miraidon, will be making their official TCG debut.

To celebrate both launches, players who log in to the Pokémon TCG Live between May 2, 2023 and June 6, 2023, will be getting special customization sets that they can use in-game in TCG Live. The game is available on both iOS and Google Play.

Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet Announced with Open World Gameplay

Pokémon Day commemorates the initial release of the, now, multimillion-dollar franchise. This year’s Pokémon Day was a little special with the unveiling of the next generation: Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet | Announcement Trailer

The two new games mark the franchise’s 9th entry in its mainstream games. More significantly, it’s the first mainstream game to adopt an open-world adventure format. Before this, mainstream games had strict, linear gameplay that guided players from one town to another advancing the game’s plot. However, this changed with Pokémon Sword and Shield with small open world areas known as “wild areas”. Following this, Pokémon Legends Arceus advanced the franchise further into open-world gameplay. However, Scarlet and Violet will be the first to do it in a mainstream game.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will take players to a brand-new region inspired by the real-world Iberian region which consists of Spain and Portugal. The Pokémon Company hasn’t yet revealed the name of the region. However, early game footage shows a vast, open-world with buildings and landmarks inspired by the Spanish and Portuguese. Together with these landmarks, we’re also treated to some familiar faces including Pikachu, Psyduck, Lucario, Stonjurner and Larvitar.

Meet Sprigatito, Fuecoco & Quaxly

However, the hallmark of any new generation announcement is the three “starter” Pokémon. Players will choose between them as they start their journeys. The ninth generation of mainstream games sees three new Pokémon: Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly. While they still follow the Grass-Fire-Water type triangle, the new starters give us a little insight into the style of the new series.

Sprigatito is a new cat Pokémon and the grass starter for the region. The official description lists it as the “Grass Cat Pokémon”. It’s the second feline starter in the franchise so far; the previous one being Litten of the Alolan region.

Fuecoco is a new crocodile inspired Pokémon and is the fire starter for the region as the name suggests. The new “Fire Croc Pokémon” is also the second crocodile starter in the franchise after Totodile in the Johto region.

Quaxly, on the other hand, is the first duck starter Pokémon to date and is the water starter Pokémon of the new region.

That’s about all the information we have so far about the ninth generation Pokémon games. However, we can expect more information in the coming months as the game is slated to release on the Nintendo Switch later in 2022. Yep – that’s right, this year.

Pokémon TCG Live Delayed Until 2022

Pokémon’s trading card game is arguably one of the most popular trading card games that has made its mark both physically and digitally. The franchise is probably only second to Magic the Gathering at this point. For the longest time, the online experience for the Pokémon trading card game has been sorely lacking. However, that was supposed to change with the release of Pokémon TCG Live later this year but it looks like we’re going to have to wait a little longer.

TCG Live desktop EN 01

The Pokémon Company has announced via its PokémonTCG Twitter that the new, improved Live app will be delayed into 2022. The Pokémon TCG Live app was meant to have an initial rollout in Canada with a global beta for the desktop app sometime this year, however, it looks like there may be some development setbacks. In its tweet, the Pokémon Company states that it’s looking to provide a more polished experience for “trainers”. A new date or time frame for the soft launch and beta have not been announced just yet.

That said, Trainers have begun getting code cards with Pokémon TCG Live branding on them as part of their booster and starter packs. The Pokémon Company also announced in a subsequent tweet that these codes are useable with the current Pokémon Trading Card Game Online app. If you’re worried about carrying these cards over to the new TCG Live app, The Pokémon Company announced that all cards from the HeartGold & SoulSilver series onwards will be ported over with your profile when you eventually migrate to the new TCG Live app.

Pokémon UNITE Lands On Mobile with A Special Holowear Pikachu

Pokémon UNITE was released earlier this year on the Nintendo Switch. The game marks the titular franchise’s first ventured into the MOBA realm. The unique gameplay and fast-paced gaming allowed the game to catch on pretty quickly on the Nintendo Switch.

Now, months after Pokémon UNITE’s Nintendo Switch debut, the game is finally on mobile. It’s available starting September 22, 2021, worldwide on iOS and Android. The mobile version of UNITE will be able to cross-play with the Nintendo Switch version. Trainers who have already been playing on the Switch will simply have to link their Pokémon Trainer Club or Nintendo account when playing.

Pikachu & Zeraora Join the Celebration of Pokémon UNITE on Mobile

To celebrate the launch of Pokémon UNITE on mobile, the Pokémon Company is giving away a special holowear Pikachu. The Pikachu giveaway also celebrates the game getting over 5 million pre-registrations ahead of the official launch. To get it, you simply have to log in to the mobile version of the game by October 31 2021 at 14:59 UTC. If you do, you’ll receive 1,000 Aeos tickets, a Pikachu Unite License and Festival Style: Pikachu Holowear.

In addition to Pikachu, new players can easily get one of the most powerful Pokémon available in UNITE to date – Zeraora – by completing special missions. All you have to do is win a total of 32 battles in Pokémon UNITE. Zeraora was initially given away as a launch freebie during the game’s Nintendo Switch launch.

New Battle Pass & Unite Squads Also Join the Game

Unite Battle low

Together with the iOS and Android launch, Pokémon UNITE will be kicking off a new battle pass. The space-themed Galactic Ghost 094 battle pass features a cutesy space-themed holowear for Gengar. Of course, as with all battle passes before, it comes with goodies for all players. However, if you want to maximise your winnings, you will have to pay for the pass.

Starting on September 22, 2021, you’ll be able to form Unite Squads with your favourite battle comrades. You’ll be able to interact and chat with squad members directly! There isn’t any indication if voice chat will be a part of this feature.

Pokémon is Revamping their Trading Card Game App

The Pokémon franchise has grown leaps and bounds since its debut more than a decade ago. Not only has it successfully ventured into the MOBA genre, but it’s also revived its core RPG game with new game features and its upcoming release of the much-anticipated title: Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Live 🎮 [SNEAK PEEK] 👀 | Official Trailer

You can add another revival to that list with their latest announcement. The franchise is revamping the Pokémon Trading Card Game’s digital experience. The game which is already available as Pokémon TCG online is getting a much-needed update both aesthetically and in gameplay. The new app called “Pokémon Trading Card Game Live” will be released on Android, iOS, PC and Mac.

The new online experience visually revamps the game bringing it into the future. The biggest, most obvious update is the visual updates which are in the new Pokémon Trading Card Game Live app. Avatars have been updated with more customizability and are in 3D. You’ll be able to customise everything from your skin colour to your eyes and even your clothes. The avatars are also more like Microsoft’s avatars rather than Nintendo’s Miis.

In addition to the revamped graphics, the battle arena is now more interactive and dynamic. It changes when attacks are performed or when arena effects come into play. The interface is also simplified and optimised for the best experience across platforms. Unlike the older Pokémon TCG Online, the layout has been condensed while keeping the focus on your active Pokémon.

Speaking of the older Pokémon TCG Online game, it looks like The Pokémon Company will be sunsetting the older app when Pokémon Trading Card Game Live. However, you don’t have to fret as you can migrate your profile from TCG Online to Live. When you do this, you will take over your collections to the new app but be sure to unpack any boosters you have. It looks like cards from the HeartGold & SoulSilver series and older may not make the cut with the update. However, everything from the Black & White series onwards will be playable eventually. At launch, only packs after the Lost Thunder set will be playable.

Of course, being a free-to-play app, Pokémon Trading Card Game Live will have monetisation aspects to it like Pokémon UNITE. In fact, the monetisation format is so similar, it feels like your seeing double. There will be three in-game currencies: Coins, Credits and Crystals. Coins and Credits will be obtainable in-game. The former will be used for booster packs, decks and aesthetics; while the latter will be initially obtained when moving from TCG Online to Live. After which, it will be awarded as you complete certain milestones in-game. Crystals are where you will have to fork out cash for items. These crystals will be used to buy booster packs, promo cards and more in the shop. It will also be used when you buy the battle pass.

Pokémon Trading Card Game Live will be soft-launched in Canada later this year with a global rollout for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac devices to follow.
