Nothing Announces “CMF by Nothing” with Two Upcoming Products

Nothing is making waves with its approach to aesthetic technology. Hot on the heels of the release of the Nothing Phone (2), the company took to YouTube to give its quarterly community update. In this update, the team at Nothing in London gave a quick overview of the goings-on at the company. However, the updates’ other content was overshadowed by a special announcement from its founder, Carl Pei.

That announcement is a new brand focused on bringing Nothing’s design philosophy to a more affordable price point. “CMF by Nothing” will continue to share Nothing’s design-led and user-centric approach to technology however, the new brand will focus on creating accessible products with a clean design and trusted quality. This breaks away from Nothing’s philosophy of pushing design innovation with premium materials and the latest technology. To ensure continuity with the efforts at Nothing itself, Car Pei notes that “CMF by Nothing” will be spearheaded by an independent team.

Nothing Community Update | Q2 2023

The announcement doesn’t end there, Carl Pei also announced that the new brand will be releasing CMF-branded smartwatch and headphones. The products are expected to make their debut later this year. There is so far no indication if the smartwatch will be utilising Google’s Wear OS software or going the route of OnePlus and Amazfit with a totally different OS.

It’s worth keeping in mind that Nothing has yet to release any smartwatch under the Nothing brand. So, it’s going to be interesting to see how CMF by Nothing will define clean design without Nothing leading the way in the product category.

Your Twitter is Now Your X

Yes, I know, it’s been a long time coming. But, it’s time. Twitter is finally becoming X.

It seems like the writing has been on the wall for a while now with Elon Musk taking over the company last year. However, after what seems to be the most unusually tumultuous buyout ever, the day has finally come – the iconic blue bird logo is being retired for an “X”. The Twitter rebrand exercise was kicked into high gear three months ago with Elon Musk officially replacing the Twitter company with X Corp. [I know it weirdly sounds like LexCorp and we all know what happened with that company in Superman.]

X Corp
Source: @ElonMusk

The change has already taken effect with the x.com domain leading to twitter.com. The logo has also been changed to the “X” logo. This comes after Elon Musk tweeted, “And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds”. Even the official Twitter account is now an X although its handle is still @Twitter.

So, What Happens Now?

Well, that’s just it, aside from some grandiose words from both Elon Musk and newly instated CEO, Linda Yaccarino, we don’t really know. While Elon Musk has had a long history with the brand, it’s not much to go on. He’s used “X” in many of his other undertakings like SpaceX and xAI. His first startup in 1999 was x.com.

In an internal memo from Yaccarino to Twitter staff published by CNBC, she refers to the rebranding as a second chance for the company once known as Twitter to make a big impression. In the same statement, she highlights that X will be moving at lightspeed with an inventor mindset – “constantly learning, testing out new approaches, changing to get it right and ultimately succeeding.”. This could mean that we’re about to go for a real roller coaster ride with X and what’s coming for the remnants of Twitter.

However, if anything, it seems like Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino will be taking Twitter and turning it into a global version of WeChat – a one-stop app for everything or as companies like Grab and AirAsia like to put it a “super-app”. Elon envisions X as the “everything app” and we get a glimpse of the future in the internal memo from Yaccarino, she says that X will “continue to delight our entire community with new experiences in audio, video, messaging, payments, banking — creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities.

It seems like this is already underway in the U.S. with X Corp filing for the relevant regulatory approvals months ago. That said, it’s an end of an era with Twitter officially being wiped off the face of the living internet. After more than 15 years, one of the most iconic internet companies and platforms has been put down. That said, we don’t know what’s in store for X and X Corp as Elon has hinted at improvements and refinements in the near future.

Google Bard is Now Available in 40 Over Languages with More Responses

Google I/O in May 2023 saw them launching a sort of experimental open-sourced AI platform that is the Google Bard. In our write-up, we theorized that Google Bard is a direct response to ChatGPT, or rather, an attempt to compete with or replicate the technology that is ChatGPT-4. Before you get confused, again, Google’s Bard is not the result of their DeepMind AI project. It is not exactly Google Assistant as well, though sharing plenty of similarities.

At its launch, Google’s Bard was only available in English, Japanese, and Korean. Despite only working in three languages, the experiment was made available in 180 countries at launch. It is also important to know that the Google Bard you see in May’s Google I/O 2023 is not in its first iteration.

A few months on and Google is updating Bard to be more relevant to plenty more users around the world. The latest update to Bard makes it now available in over 40 languages, including the ones it started with. They also made it available in more than the original 180 countries including countries in the European region and Brazil. Of course, this is not where Google will stop with Bard. They are still planning to bring their Bard service to more regions in the future, but they are also doing it in stages in accordance with regulatory bodies, policy makers, and experts in the different regions they are expanding to. They also say that they are taking privacy and data into consideration when taking steps in expanding their services.

Language is also not the only thing that is being updated in Google Bard. Google has also updated Bard to improve its ability to customize its responses even more. Instead of just written responses, Google Bard can even read out its own response with correct pronunciation in case you are wondering how to say certain words. This is also available in 40 languages in the new update, which makes Bard super useful when you go travel too. You can even customize the responses from Bard by telling it to respond in five different options: simple, long, short, professional, or casual. Like ChatGPT, you can even ask Google Bard to create listings or postings for various things on various platforms. For now, this one is only available in English though. Obviously, the feature will be available in more languages as Google Bard collects more contextual data in different languages and regions.

Like your browser history, your interaction with Bard should not only last for that short minute you interact with the platform. The platform makes it easier for you to revisit conversations and topics you might have dropped off from with Bard. You can now pin your conversations and rename them so that you can archive it and bring it up on a later date when you have the time or whenever necessary. They have also improved Bard’s coding capabilities by now offering the ability to export Python codes to Replit and Google Colab to make coding much easier and faster. You can even share your Bard conversations with your friends and have them see the ideas you have thought of with the help of Bard. Google Lens is also now integrated into Bard. That means you can either take a photo or upload images with prompts or requests and Bard will analyze the photo to help with its responses.

More Changes to Twitter, Now Google Cannot Even See Tweets

Twitter, under the new management of Elon Musk, is a different one than the one we were introduced to more than a decade ago. In just a few months after Elon Musk took over the social media platform as CEO, the platform started charging people for the blue ticks that indicates verified accounts. In a recent stir, the platform restricted contents to just people who are registered on the platform. A little later, they introduced a rate limit, where non-paying users get to see only up to a certain number of tweets a day. Specifically, you get to see up to 600 tweets a day before a limit error comes up to stop you from scrolling some more. Now, Twitter results are disappearing from Google search results.

While it may seem to be a deliberate move from Twitter to limit access to the platform by unregistered users. The disappearance and lack of Twitter content is a direct result of Google simply not picking up tweets from the platform because of the access restriction from Twitter. The Google Search engine still picks up feeds from Twitter with their API, but it has reduced significantly as noted by Search Engine Land. According to their report, Google Search has dropped more than half of the indexed URLs from Twitter. That is not to say that you cannot see tweets from Twitter in a Google search though. You still can, but you can only see new tweets that are made public. There are no mentions currently indicating the age limit of a tweet showing up on the Google Search platform.

There are rumours that this is just a temporary thing. Speculations regarding the lack of Twitter results in Google Search is due to the large changes happening within Twitter and for its users. In 2015, Twitter and Google had a deal where Twitter gave access to the full stream of tweets on Twitter’s platform, known today as the “Firehose”. While that was done before the Elon Musk era of Twitter, there are no reasons to believe that the deal has changed in any way for now. Then again, Twitter and Google are keeping any information close their chests for now, so we may see a change in stance from both parties in the coming days.

The move to limit Twitter only to registered is nothing new in the social media space. If you want to see a post or story from Facebook, you must get registered with the platform. Even for Instagram, you are only able to see single posts from users before needing to sign up for the platform to have access to the library of content the platform holds. In this sense, Twitter is technically pretty much just following in the steps of other social media platforms. Still, we think that closing off access to Twitter might be more damaging than helpful to the platform, especially since Elon Musk is focusing on monetizing the platform. It limits the option to run ads that could even be visible from Google itself and reaching out entire populations that do not have Twitter accounts or have no intention to get on the platform just to entertain themselves with microblogs.

Nothing is confirmed at this point, but Elon Musk may just denounce the deal with Google at any time. While it does not sound like a major loss to Google, it is a small loss to content creators who are active on Twitter. It is a loss in exposure of the platform and users. It closes off the platform to be used as a public announcement platform too in this case. Currently, only time can tell whether or not this is going to be a permanent thing.

Samsung Introduces the World to 2nm, Set to Storm the World 2025 Onward

Samsung just had their 7th annual Samsung Foundry Forum, and it was interesting. As the name suggests, the forum focuses more on Samsung’s in-house chip, semiconductor, and silicon development. They are, after all, the largest and own the world’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing plant. They introduced the world to the 3nm process early on this year and is speculated to bring the first of the 3nm processed chips to smartphones later this year. The most powerful Android devices today are powered by Qualcomm’s 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen2. Apple is also expected to update their latest iPhone launching this year to a 3nm chip.

This year’s Foundry Forum focuses not just on what is, but also what is to be in the future for Samsung’s semiconductor business. Samsung stresses the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and its requirements, moving forward into the future. They spoke about how their own gate-all-around (GAA) advanced node technology would be the driving force of AI applications in the future. Of course, they also pointed to growth of their semiconductor business in the form of an expansion in production capacity, stretching their lead in the semiconductor production business over their competitors. However, they have not mentioned anything on their own Exynos chips made for smartphones. To be fair, there is still plenty to unpack at the Foundry Forum, especially when it comes to 2nm process.

Samsung detailed their plans to mass produce their 2nm process chips by 2025, first for mobile applications. That also means that you can expect Apple to introduce their iPhone with 3nm silicon in that same year. You can also expect Qualcomm to jump in line to introduce their Snapdragon 8 processor with 2nm process technology in late 2025 or early 2026 in this case. Most of all though, you can be hopeful on the return of the Samsung Exynos chips on Samsung’s flagship devices.

Samsung’s Exynos processing chips for mobile applications are still a thing, just not on the current line of flagship devices that Samsung pushes like the Galaxy S23 line-up and the Galaxy Z Fold. The Exynos chips are now powering the mid-range smartphones instead which, to be fair, is probably the most profitable segment in the industry. Still, that means that the Samsung Galaxy flagships devices gets only the Qualcomm Snapdragon treatment. While that is not a bad thing, it is a sad thing to see, especially when Samsung just renewed and extended its partnership with AMD to bring Radeon graphics power to Samsung’s in-house developed chips.

Still, Samsung’s commitment to pushing their production capacity and technology just means that they are not out of the fight in silicon supremacy just yet. With their renewed partnership with AMD, they did mention that they are looking to bring a new Exynos chip to market and into their own flagship smartphones or handheld devices. We could see an iteration of Samsung’s 3nm Exynos with AMD’s graphical prowess later in the year when they launch their lates Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. In the Forum, they also said that they are increasing their production capacity for foundry products made for mobile devices and other applications, which could be a direct result of them pushing the next-generation Exynos chips on to their latest flagship devices. It could also be because their customers are demanding even more chips too.

The Samsung 2nm processor is not just for mobile applications like smartphones or gaming handheld though. Since the Forum stressed AI applications, Samsung aims to put the 2nm chips into high-performance-computing (HPC) solutions that is meant to push AI technologies as well in 2026. Eventually, the technology will also be available for the automotive industry in 2027. In 2027 as well, Samsung is planning to start the mass production of 1.4nm chips.

The promise of 2nm process seems to be significant too. They claim that with the current development, the 2nm chip has proven to be 12% more powerful than the current 3nm chip. It is 5% smaller than the 3nm chip and is up to 25% more power efficient too, making the jump from 3nm to 2nm a rather large one in terms of performance and efficiency.

Samsung also promises that in 2025, the 2nm process technology will find its way into gallium nitride (GaN) power applications for mobile devices, data centers, and automotive industry. They are also advancing networking technology in 2025 with the 5nm Radio Frequency (RF) technology that supports 6G networks. They say that the 5nm RF process shows a 40% in power efficiency while taking up half the space of a traditional 14nm process.

We said earlier that you can be hopeful to see Samsung’s Exynos chips make a comeback in their flagship devices. That is, at least for now, just speculations and hopeful statements. There is no confirmation on Samsung reintroducing Exynos flagship class processors currently. You can also expect Apple to be the first to introduce a 3nm processor for their iPhones later in the year.
