Since the inception of the Galaxy Z Fold series back in 2019, Samsung has been the undisputed king of the book-style foldable market. Over the years, we have seen the company refine a single, core design: a tall, narrow outer screen paired with a nearly square inner display. However, as the foldable market matures and competitors from China release impossibly thin devices—and with Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone looming on the horizon—Samsung is seems to be changing its strategy. For 2026, rumours indicate that we aren’t just getting one flagship Fold instead, we are getting two distinct models: the Galaxy Z Fold8 (initially rumoured as the Fold8 Wide) and the uncompromising Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.

We are breaking down all the rumours, leaks, and supply chain insights to see what Samsung has in store.
Design: The Great Two Fold Strategy
The most significant change for the 2026 lineup is the introduction of the standard Galaxy Z Fold8. Initially rumoured as the Wide Fold or the Fold8 Wide, the vanilla Fold8 will be adopting a completely new “passport” style form factor. For years, the biggest complaint from consumers regarding the Galaxy Z Fold 3 through the Z Fold 7 has been the cramped, narrow cover screen, which made two-handed typing a frustrating experience. The new Galaxy Z Fold8 seems to be directly addressing this by offering a wider 5.5-inch outer display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. This supposedly gives the device the feel of a traditional slab smartphone when closed. When unfolded, users are treated to a 7.6-inch inner display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, meaning the device naturally opens into a landscape orientation. The aspect ratio and size make it perfect for media consumption without having to physically rotate the device.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is rumoured to continue its legacy of catering to power users. Rumours indicate that it will retain the taller, narrower silhouette that existing Fold owners are accustomed to, featuring a 6.5-inch cover screen and an expansive 8.0-inch inner display. Leaked dummy units and real-world sightings at a Samsung Experience Store in South Korea confirm these vastly different footprints. Amazingly, the wider Fold8 is tipped to be incredibly light, weighing in at just 201 grams and measuring a remarkably thin 4.5mm when unfolded.
Hardware & Performance: Premium Even on the Wider side of Things
Under the hood, Samsung is seemingly not cutting any corners. Both the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Fold8 Ultra are rumoured to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 “for Galaxy” processor globally. This bespoke, overclocked silicon is rumoured to promise a 3.5% bump in clock speeds over the standard chip and is heavily optimised for the unique display drivers of foldable panels.

When it comes to memory, the ongoing global semiconductor situation (RAMegeddon) means these devices will pack serious hardware to justify their rising costs. We expect base models to feature 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, with the Ultra model potentially offering up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage to power localised Gemini AI tasks seamlessly. To keep everything cool, rumours suggest that the Fold8 Ultra will incorporate a physical vapour chamber cooling system for the first time in a Z Fold device, finally moving away from standard graphite thermal pads.
Display & Crease Eradication
The internal display is where the magic happens, and Samsung is reportedly addressing the elephant in the room: the display crease. Supply chain insiders claim the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra utilises a dual-layer Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) setup reinforced by a laser-drilled metal support plate. This mechanical refinement is said to make the crease “nearly invisible and almost undetectable to touch,” matching the best Chinese foldables on the market. Furthermore, the Ultra model is slated to inherit the anti-reflective display coating from the Galaxy S-series, allowing its peak brightness of 3,600 nits to shine through even under harsh direct sunlight.
Cameras: S-Ultra Class Optics
Camera performance has historically been the sacrifice buyers made when opting for a foldable. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra changes the narrative by adopting an S Ultra-class 200MP primary sensor. This massive 1/1.3-inch sensor is paired with a vastly upgraded 50MP ultra-wide lens and a 10MP 3x optical telephoto lens.
To achieve its incredibly thin and light profile, the standard Galaxy Z Fold8 makes a slight compromise here. It drops the telephoto lens entirely, relying on a dual-camera array featuring a 50MP primary sensor and a 50MP ultra-wide sensor.
Battery Life
Another long-standing grievance with the Fold series has been battery stagnation; capacities have hovered around 4,400mAh for half a decade. The Fold8 Ultra is rumoured to finally break this streak with a massive 5,000mAh dual-cell battery, representing a 13.6% capacity increase. It will apparently also bring the much-needed 45W fast wired charging to the table. The lighter, wider standard Fold8 will rely on a very respectable 4,800mAh cell with standard 25W charging.
Pricing
Based on industry leaks and rising component costs, the standard Galaxy Z Fold8 is expected to start at approximately $1,899(approximately RM7730.72) for the 256GB model. The powerhouse Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is anticipated to break the two-grand barrier, starting around $2,099 (approximately RM8545.05), with fully maxed-out 1TB models potentially reaching $2,799 (approximately RM11394.76).
Are these dual foldables the ultimate productivity machines? They certainly look like it on paper.
