When investing in home audio, the frustrating reality is that new devices often render your older equipment obsolete. Sonos is actively pushing against this isolation trend by reinforcing its interconnected ecosystem with the introduction of two new speakers: the Sonos Play and the Sonos Era 100 SL.

These devices are specifically designed to be powerful standalone speakers that seamlessly integrate and grow with your existing home setup. As Tom Conrad, the Chief Executive Officer of Sonos, pointed out, a great sound experience should not force a complete reset every time you want to upgrade; it should simply get better as you add to it.
Sonos Play
The Sonos Play arrives as the brand’s most versatile audio offering, engineered to transition effortlessly from the living room to the outdoors. Aesthetically, it takes a slightly different direction from the rest of the lineup, adopting a cylindrical shape that still retains the signature minimalist Sonos design language. The speaker is highly compact, standing just over 19 centimetres tall and weighing an easily manageable 1.3 kilograms. It rests securely on an included Charging Base for daily home use, connecting via your local WiFi network to group with other rooms.

However, it is fundamentally built for everyday carry. The design features a highly practical silicone utility loop that can be rotated up for easy carrying or folded down for a cleaner indoor look. Built to survive the elements, it boasts an IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating alongside an impressive 24 hours of continuous portable battery life. It even includes a built-in power bank to keep your smartphone charged while on the move. A major quality-of-life upgrade is its standalone connectivity away from home.
For the first time, users can connect their phone to the Sonos Play via Bluetooth and instantly sync up to three additional Sonos Play or Move 2 speakers simply by pressing and holding the Play/Pause button, bypassing the need for a dedicated WiFi network entirely. The audio experience is actively optimised by Automatic Trueplay tuning, which dynamically adjusts the sound profile based on your immediate environment. To ensure playback remains frictionless, the speaker natively supports voice services, Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, and seamless control through the dedicated Sonos application.
Sonos Era 100 SL
For users looking for a straightforward, high-fidelity entry point into the ecosystem, the Sonos Era 100 SL strips away the unnecessary extras. This model features a streamlined, mic-free design that focuses entirely on delivering confident, room-filling audio without any always-on voice hardware. Visually, it inherits the sleek, stylish contours of the standard Era 100, featuring a compact footprint that fits beautifully on bookshelves, kitchen counters, or bedside tables. The chassis also highlights a strong sustainability focus, utilising post-consumer recycled plastics to minimise environmental waste.

While it performs exceptionally well as a solo speaker, its true value lies in its modular flexibility. Over time, users can effortlessly expand their setup by pairing two Era 100 SL units together for true stereo separation, or utilising them as rear surround channels to build out a comprehensive home theatre system. Like all of the brand’s premium offerings, the sound profile of the Era 100 SL was carefully tuned with direct input from the Sonos Soundboard, ensuring the audio output accurately reflects the original creator’s intent.
It also supports the same broad ecosystem benefits, allowing users to choose from over one hundred different streaming platforms to effortlessly cast their favourite music, podcasts, and movies across the entire home.
