Sony Strikes a Balance Between Size & Aperture with New Wide-Angle Zoom G Lens FE 16-25mm F2.8 G

Sony is adding a new lens to its α™ (Alpha™) E-mount lens line-up. The new FE16-25mm F2.8 lens brings the wide F2.8 aperture to a compact form factor. It maintains a large F2.8 aperture throughout its 16mm to 25mm zoom range. The new lens comes with a compact and lightweight design complete with the latest optical and mechanical design weighing only 409g.

Sony FE 16 25mm F2.8 G 2

The new allows photographers to get beautiful bokeh and high-resolution performance without the bulk and heft that usually come with lenses of this calibre. It also ups the ante with high-precision, quiet, fast-tracking autofocus (AF). These benefits come on top of the familiar operability, size and weight of the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G launched earlier this year. It’s also easy to use both with a gimbal and handheld.

Introducing FE 16-25mm F2.8 G | Sony | α Lens

Sony has achieved the compact size of the FE 16-25mm F2.8 G by optimising the configuration of the glasses and lenses. With the three extra-low dispersion glasses and four aspherical lenses, Sony minimises chromatic aberration and ensures high-resolution performance throughout the image. Pair this with the 11-blade circular aperture and you’ve got some of the most beautiful bokeh which has become a hallmark in Sony G lenses. The lens is also built for motion photography with two linear motors enabling high-speed, high-precision, high-tracking, and quiet focusing. It also supports high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking of up to approximately 120 frames per second for the α9 III full-frame mirrorless camera. It even has smooth tracking even when shooting 4K120p or FHD240p high frame rate videos.

Pricing & Availability

The Sony FE 16-25mm F2.8 G will be available in Malaysia starting at the end of April 2024. It will be available at Sony Concept stores and participating retailers.

Sony α9 III & SEL300F28GM Make Malaysian Debut

Sony Alpha series of cameras are one of the most prolific when it comes to mirrorless cameras. The lineup has been taking both photography and videography worlds by storm and is responsible for creating a new standard for cameras in its wake. The α9 has been one of the hallmarks of the series supplementing the α7 with a more professional take on the full-frame mirrorless camera. This year, Sony is upping the ante by bringing game-changing features to the α9 III.

A Revolutionary Camera Imbued with Speed and AI

The new Sony α9 III comes equipped with a stacked CMOS image sensor with approximately 24.6-megapixels and built-in memory. The camera is also the first in the world to feature a global shutter on this sensor. This allows the camera to shoot up to 120 frames per second continuously with AF/AE tracking. The sensor is complemented with the latest BIONZ XR image processing engine and a designated AI processing unit. This combination allows the camera to recognise a wide variety of subjects. These features together allow seasoned photographers to take photographs that were not possible before.

Sony Alpha 9 III Launch 7

The camera is able to hit shutter speeds of up to 1/80000 second or 1/16000 second in continuous shooting. Sony’s signature eye recognition complete real-time recognition autofocus and real-time tracking are also featured on the new α9 III. It also has 8.0 stops of optical 5-axis in-body image stabilization. Sony is also introducing a pre-capture feature that allows users to go back up to 1 second and record the moment before shooting. Together with the large buffer memory and increased overall system speed, the α9 III can capture approximately 390 Fine JPEG images in one continuous 30fps burst.

No Crop 4K 120p Video with 6K Oversampling

The α9 III has enough speed that it’s able to shoot 4K footage in 120p. The best part? This is done without the crop that we’ve seen in other cameras. This allows videographers to capture what they see exactly. It’s also possible to shoot 4K 60p high-resolution videos with 6K oversampling.

The S-Cinetone image creation process on the α9 III is created through the development of the VENICE digital cinema camera for video production. This shooting profile allows human skin tones and subjects to stand out. However, if accuracy is what you’re looking for, the camera can shoot videos in S-Log3 in its Log shooting mode. It can also reflect and display the user’s favourite LUT. The α9 III is compatible with Sony’s “Monitor & Control” mobile app.

The G Master Telephoto Lens

Together with the Sony α9 III, Sony Malaysia also announced the availability of the SEL300F28GM telephoto lens. The new G master telephoto lens is only 1470g making it lightweight and balanced for better handling and less shakiness and fatigue when shooting without a tripod. It’s designed to have better weight distribution.

Introducing FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS | Sony | α Lens

The SEL300F28GM comes with the detailed G master resolution. The lens’s optical design includes three Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements and an additional ED glass that helps subdue chromatic aberrations. It helps capture pictures with creamy bokeh and consistent contrast.

Pricing & Availability

The Sony α9 III will be retailing for RM29,299 and is available for pre-order now. Of course, this price is only for the camera’s body. Early purchasers in Malaysia will get a free 80GB Sony CEA-80T memory card worth RM989 and an additional NP-FZ100 battery for the camera worth RM402.

The SEL300F28GM is available for pre-order and will be retailing for RM29,899. Early purchasers who purchase the lens with a Sony α7c will be entitled to a free 160GB CF Express Type Card A worth RM1889.

Celebrate Spooky Season with October’s PS Plus Monthly Games

Spooky season is upon us! With Halloween around the corner, it looks like PlayStation has some games for the occasion. These games will be available exclusively to PlayStation Plus users. The 3 games that are currently available are sure to keep you on the edge of your seat, scare you or hug you like a warm cup of Pumpkin Spice.

The highlight of this month’s games is none other than the spiritual successor of the famed “Dead Space” franchise – Callisto Protocol. The game takes place 300 years in the future where you play as Jacob Lee, a man imprisoned on Jupiter’s moon: Callisto. Things couldn’t get worse, right? Wrong. Besides being an inmate, you must now survive as other inmates are transformed into gruesome abominations and find a way off the moon. But that’s not all, Callisto’s Walls hold sinister secrets that may just come to end you.

Callisto’s Protocol is definitely perfect for the spooky season with terrors at every corner. It’s even got an ambience that will leave your hair standing and jump scares that may just jolt you out of your seat. Are you ready to escape?

Weird West is a twist on the Western Cowboy era where instead of just bandits and mercenaries you share the wild frontier with dark fantasy creatures such as werewolves, curse creatures, cults and other members of the underworld.

The game offers unique gameplay with choices that will affect the players and even the world. It’s an immersive experience where your actions will affect how the characters, factions and places will react to you. Play as multiple characters throughout the gameplay and learn their origins; all while waiting for them to culminate and climax!

A little less scary than Callisto Protocol, the game still brings the spooky vibe this October. It’s got interesting graphics, creepy creatures and heart-pumping choices that will shape how it will all end.

These games are available for the month of October with any tier subscription of PS Plus so don’t miss your chance to enjoy some spooky feel for the spooky month.

Cloud Streaming Comes to PlayStation Plus Premium

PlayStation Plus Premium is starting to make sense. Sony introduced the all-new PlayStation Plus more than a year ago, however, the service and its tiers have had a hard time enticing users to subscribe. As it stands now, PS Plus now has three tiers: essential, extra and premium (or deluxe in markets without streaming). At the very bottom is essential which offers little more than online multiplayer and free monthly games. The extra tier gives access to the Games Catalogue while Premium adds on the classics catalogue and game trials. However, that’s about to change with the introduction of game streaming to the service at its premium tier. While the service was announced a little over 12 months ago, it’s finally making its debut.

PlayStation Plus Game Streaming KA
Source: PlayStation

Starting this month, gamers will be able to start accessing PS5 cloud streaming. With the service kicking off, you’ll be able to play PS5 games without the need for lengthy downloads. Instead, the games will be instantly streamed from Sony’s servers. This will help in eliminating the waiting time and ensuring that you can dive into your chosen game at a moment’s notice.

Sony isn’t looking to stream games in low quality with the service. Instead, when streaming PS5 games, you can enjoy high-quality resolution options, including 4K, 1440p, 1080p, and 720p, all at up to 60 frames per second. This also includes HDR support. Sony is also bringing support for 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound and Tempest 3D Audiotech which is supposed to make game audio even more immersive.

Sony’s approach to cloud gaming is refreshingly flexible. PlayStation Plus Premium members can stream the games they own or wish to try out. While some games can be directly streamed, others can be downloaded, providing you with the choice that best suits your gaming preferences. You’ll also be able to capture up to 3 minutes of gameplay while streaming.

PlayStation Plus Game Streaming

Here are some notable titles you’ll be able to stream or download as a PlayStation Plus Premium member: Resident Evil 4, Dead Island 2, Genshin Impact, Fall Guys, and Fortnite. Additionally, you can access game trials for various titles, such as Hogwarts Legacy, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and The Calisto Protocol. These game trials enable you to test these titles before deciding to purchase them.

While not all games will be available at launch, Sony promises to support hundreds of PS5 titles. Some of the top PS5 hits are already in the lineup, including Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, Mortal Kombat 11, and Saints Row IV. This is just the beginning, with the game catalogue set to expand significantly in the future.

Pricing & Availability: Unlocking the Future of Gaming

As mentioned earlier in the article, you have to be subscribed to PlayStation Plus Premium in supported countries to access the service. At the time of the announcement, PS Plus Premium is priced at USD$159.99 (MYR755.11) a year or USD$17.99 (MYR84.91) a month. There is also a 3-month subscription for USD$49.99 (MYR235.94).

Availability will be rolled out in phases in select markets. As of now, the service is scheduled to live in Japan on October 17, 2023, followed by Europe on October 23, 2023 and North America on October 30, 2023.

At the moment, cloud gaming through PlayStation Plus Premium will be available in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United State.

The PlayStation 5 Gets A Slim Makeover With A Removable Disc Drive in Tow

Sony has put the PlayStation 5 on a diet! The chunky monkey we all love and adore has gone on a diet. It is now slimmer and more stylish than ever but it’s got more storage. The new slimmer PlayStation 5 comes with design updates that tweak its futuristic design with optimisations that help it shed its bulk for a sleeker profile.

PlayStation 5 Slim 1
Source: Sony PlayStation

However, don’t be fooled; these new units maintain the same internal hardware power as the original PS5. What’s truly impressive is the substantial reduction in size and weight—over 30% in volume and 18-24% in weight compared to its predecessors. Inside, the new models boast a roomy 1TB SSD – an upgrade from the original’s 825GB of storage.

The redesign of the new PS5 models is not just about slimness. It introduces a stunning visual element with faceplates that feature a curved slit bisecting each faceplate into “glossy” upper and “matte” lower sections. If you want to add a splash of colour, Sony has you covered; New coloured faceplates will be available, starting in early 2024, for just USD$54.99 (MYR259.48). You’ll be able to get more options like the recently announced Deep Earth Collection soon.

One of these panels now houses the attachment area for the removable disc drive. This also means that you can “upgrade” your digital-only PS5 to a “full” PS5 by purchasing the Ultra HD Blu-ray drive for an additional USD$79.99 (MYR377.47).

PlayStation 5 Slim 4
Source: Sony PlayStation

However, it’s essential to note that the slimmer models won’t stand vertically out of the box. For that, you’ll need a Vertical Stand, available separately for USD$29.99 (MYR141.52). Another notable change is the front-facing USB-A port, which has been replaced with a second USB-C port.

With these enhancements comes a slight adjustment in pricing. The MSRP for the PS5 Digital Edition is being increased from USD$399.99 (MYR1,887.36) to USD$449.99 (MYR2,123.29) in the US while the standard PS5 remains at USD$499.99 (MYR2,359.21). The new design also marks the end of production for the original PS5s. When the current inventory is sold out, you’ll only be able to get the new, slim design.

Sony Burano – 8K Run-and-Gun? No Problem!

Sony’s camera division is on a roll. They just recently introduced the α(alpha)6700, α7CII and α7CR models for the budding hybrid content creators who are looking for premium and reliable hardware that is also accessible and offers flexibility and shooting capabilities like no other. The α6700, while being an APS-C mirrorless camera, is still a rather capable camera that offers 4K 60p video recording capabilities alongside the S-Log encoding Sony is known for. If you have a little more money to spare and wants the best shooting experience at a more compact body, the α7CII and α7CR are perfect mirrorless full-frame cameras that can get the job done as well as their full-sized counterparts.

These are Alpha cameras though. They are made for the pro-sumers and enthusiasts more than anything else. What if you are serious about your contents? What if you are a professional videographer that often takes out time for documentary type shoots? You need to go for the Sony FX30 or FX3, no wait; maybe the FX6 will do, what about the Venice 2? Too much? Maybe something in the middle, something like the brand-new BURANO.

Welcome to the Sony CineAlta line-up, specifically to the VENICE 2, Sony’s flagship video camera that is made to shoot at 8.6K resolution, higher than what Netflix requires for their 4K certified movies. Well, to be fair Sony launched their VENICE 2 camera a while ago, and this is not the camera you are here to see. It is important to know the VENICE 2 camera though, because Sony’s latest film camera is sporting Sony’s best and most powerful full-frame film sensor ever made.

8.6K Sensor with VENICE Colour Science

Source: Sony

The BURANO sports an 8.6 full-frame sensor that is likened to the VENICE 2, except for a few missing features. You cannot record videos at the full 8.6K resolution, for example, but that is minor when you consider that the BURANO still records videos at 8K resolution at 30p. You can shoot at 60p, but you must dial it down to 6K. At 4K, the BURANO can record at a maximum of 120p for those impressive slow-mos. They are still more than what Netflix requires for their exclusive movies.

Perfect for Running About

CX96800 9 ZEISS loupe inside Mid
Source: Sony

So why would you opt for a dieled down edition of the brilliant VENICE 2 film camera then? For one, it comes down to the weight and size of the BURANO. The Sony BURANO is 32mm shorter and 1.4kg lighter than the VENICE 2, meaning that it is more portable, comfortable, and easier to work around when you are constantly moving or when you need to shoulder mount your camera. Its lightweight magnesium body construction also means that you can shoulder and operate the camera for longer periods of time.

The cuts in effective resolution, weight, and size does not make the BURANO a slouch. It still packs some of the best Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) mechanisms you can find on a film camera, which makes it all the more suitable for a run-and-gun type of shoot. With an included PL mount bracket for the Sony BURANO, you have the world’s first PL-mount digital cinema camera. Of course, it is still an E-mount camera so you can pair it to Sony’s wide lens selection or third-party lenses of your choice.

Does Everything The VENICE 2 Does

Source: Sony

You still get variable ND filters built right into the camera body just so that you can trim your set-up down to a reasonable size and weight. With built-in ND filters too, you are able to quickly set-up for your shot to save on time.

Since this is a cinema camera with 8K recording capabilities, recording media is rather crucial here. The Sony BURANO supports up to two CF Express Type-B cards and VPG400 mediums for high bitrate writes especially with8K videos. You can even shoot at compressed RAW if you want even more control over colours and look. If course, you still can shoot at Sony’s S-Log3 or even S-Log.cine for the best-in-class log encoding and easy colour grading in post-editing processes. Since it offers the same colour science as the VENICE 2 camera, you can even use this BURANO as a secondary camera or back-up camera for your main driver, the VENICE 2 (if you are lucky enough to own a VENICE 2 anyway). But that is not all your camera can record in. To quicken your editing process and skip through the entire colour grading process, you can stick to the Warm, Cool, Vintage, Teal and Orange cinematic colour presets.

Price and Availability

Sony did not announce the Sony BURANO’s official pricing. It is a cinema camera though, so it is not technically a product that is sold publicly. They also have not mentioned any availability dates for the camera. If you are interested in procuring one, you might want to contact Sony. They are offering attendants to IBC 2023, Amsterdam a first look and feel of the BURANO though from the 15th to 18th of September 2023. If you wish to find out more about Sony’s latest BURANO cinema camera, you can head out to Sony’s website.
