OPPO Reno5 Series Makes Malaysian Debut

OPPO took the stage today to unveil their new Reno5 series which brings a new design language with the same top of the line camera technology. Since their initial release of the Reno, OPPO has quickly brought their cutting edge camera technology to the series making it one of the better mid-tier offerings.

This time, OPPO is bringing two editions of the OPPO Reno5: the regular Reno5 and the Reno5 Pro. Both devices come with 5G capabilities. However, they differ in the processors that power them; the OPPO Reno5 comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G Octacore processor clocked at 2.4GHz while the Pro comes Mediatek’s Dimensity 1000+ processor. This makes the Reno5 Pro the first smartphone to have Mediatek’s latest processor in Malaysia.

Aside from that, OPPO’s mid-range heroes come with a 6.4-inch AMOLED display on the Reno5 and a slightly larger 6.5-inch SuperAMOLED display on the Pro. Both have a Full HD+ resolution of 2400×1080 pixels in the 20:9 aspect ratio. They are capable of 90Hz refresh rate with 180Hz touch sampling.

Both the Reno5 and Reno5 Pro are capable of 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 which means that you should be able to get to 100% charge with 35 minutes of charging. The Reno5 comes with a 4,300mAH battery while the Reno5 Pro comes with a slightly larger 4350mAh. They charge via a USB-C port and support Wi-Fi 5 and 6 respectively.

On the camera side of things, the Reno5 series comes with a newly augmented 64-megapixel quad-camera sensor. This year the 64-megapixel main sensor is complemented with an 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor, a 2-megapixel monochrome sensor and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. On the front is 32-megapixel sensor.

While the setup may seem run-of-the-mill, OPPO has augmented the setup with new AI technology they are calling Full Dimension Fusion (FDF). This technology allows the camera to capture portrait selfies the front camera and amazingly crisp pictures with the main camera setup. This time, OPPO has made things a little better by allowing you to use its bokeh algorithm while in video mode. The technology also incorporates Live HDR algorithms that will make dark, dingy pictures and videos come to life with colour and depth. It also brings a new stabilization algorithm that OPPO claims will allow you to have super steady videos and minimise blur in photos.

Pricing & Availability

The OPPO Reno5 will be retailing for MYR1,899 while the Reno5 Pro will be available for MYR2,599. Both phones will be available in Galactic Silver and Starry Black.

Pre-orders have kicked off on the 13th of January and will continue until January 26, 2021. Successful pre-orders will receive a pair OPPO Enco W11 true wireless earphones, an OPPO case and comes with an extended year of warranty. If you walk into an OPPO Sales & Service centre, you will get an additional set of OPPO BFF friendship phone cases and an MYR100 rebate on your purchase of the Reno5. The first 100 walk-in customers will also be entitled to a mystery gift worth up to MYR150,000.

OnePlus Nord Will Be Coming to Malaysia, India and Europe – Here’s What You Need to Know

Back in April, OnePlus had their announcement of their new flagships, the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro. However, back then, rumours were rife with a third device in the series called the OnePlus 8 Lite, which never made its debut. Shortly after, the OnePlus Z surfaced with similar specifications. Now, we have confirmation from OnePlus itself, that their upcoming phone is the OnePlus Nord.

What is the OnePlus Nord?

Remember way back when OnePlus launched their first mid-range smartphone? You don’t? Well, lets talk a little bit about the missed opportunity that was the OnePlus X. Back in 2015, OnePlus released an ill-fated device called the OnePlus X, their first foray into a lower price range than their popular numbered flagship. The device wasn’t very popular and to be honest, was a dumpster fire of a device plagued with bugs.

Come 2020, we have the Nord. OnePlus second attempt at the mid-range market and to be honest, one that makes sense with their numbered flagships hitting true flagship prices. The OnePlus Nord seems to be shaping up as a successor for the OnePlus X. But saying that wouldn’t do justice to the difference in the company’s approach to the OnePlus Nord.

They are approaching the new device like a revitalization of the company’s “Never Settle” tagline. A new beginning for a truly powerful mid-range player with a price tag that puts the competition to shame.

What does the OnePlus Nord Pack?

While we don’t have full confirmations for all the specifications, we can say with confidence that the Nord is shaping up to be a really interesting offering in the mid-range space.

Initially, it was rumoured that the Nord, or the OnePlus Z, as it was known then, would be coming with the MediaTek Dimensity processor. However, the OnePlus Nord seems to now be coming with a Snapdragon 765G which will also mean that the smartphone will be 5G capable. It looks like the processor will be complemented by 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. No word just yet on whether the phone will support microSD cards.

On the display side of things, it looks like the Nord will be coming with a 6.55-inch Super AMOLED display. The screen will have a Full HD+ resolution of 2220×1080 pixels and will have a 90Hz refresh rate. It looks like it will be a hole punch display with slim bezels. It will also be flat unlike the curved 8.

It looks like the OnePlus Nord will be coming with a Quad camera array – not the dual or triple camera setup that was initially rumoured. That said, the camera doesn’t look to be your run of the mill mid-ranger either. It’s a quad array with a 48-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra wide sensor, a 5-megapixel macro sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. If it sounds familiar it’s a similar setup to the Redmi Note 9s which was recently released but it’s to be seen if the company is using the same Sony IMX module. On the selfie side of things, the new offering looks to be bringing a dual camera setup with a 32-megapixel main sensor paired with an 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor.

All of these specs is rumoured to be powered by 4,300 mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging. It will support USB-C but will not have a headphone jack – which is making more sense since we’re getting inklings of OnePlus launching it’s first true wirelsss earphones.

When can I get it and Where?

The new OnePlus Nord will be making its official debut on July 21, 2020 in a special augmented reality (AR) launch. You will need to download the Nord app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store to join in. It will be launching in a very limited beta in North America. However, Malaysia, India and select countries in Europe will be getting the smartphone in all its glory. It looks like the price will be around EUR€500 (MYR2,409.15). We expect the launch price to be about MYR1999-2299 in Malaysia to keep the phone competitive with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy A51 and the iPhone SE.

So far, these are the countries that have been confirmed to get the OnePlus Nord:

Motorola Announces A New Flagship: the Motorola Edge+

It’s been a while since there was any news on a Motorola flagship. It’s last big flagship was the MotoMods touting Moto Z4. Since then, the company has been invested in their mid-range offerings with the Moto G series, which got a stylus in one of the more recent releases; and it’s Motorola One series. The last Motorola branded smartphone to reach Malaysia was the Motorola One Power which was sold through online shopping platform, Shopee.

This year, the now Lenovo owned Motorola Mobility looks to be reentering the flagship race with a new contender: the Motorola Edge+. If you’re asking where’s the “Moto” brand, it seems like the new flagship will be leaving the moniker behind. However, it’s also taking specs and features more seriously than any other Motorola flagship in recent years.

Built to Impress: The Motorola Edge+

The new Motorola Edge+ doesn’t hold back when it comes to specifications. It packs the cutting edge Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor with 12GB of DDR5 RAM and 256GB of internal storage. They’re using the UFS3.0 for internal memory. The combination makes the Motorola Edge one of the most powerful flagship devices on the market. Coming equipped with 5G connectivity, the Edge+ is Motorola’s first 5G smartphone.

The display on the Edge+ comes with a curved, 6.77-inch AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution of 2340×1080 pixels. It has a 21:9 aspect ratio and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The display is also HDR10+ certified. Their Endless Edge display wraps nearly 90-degrees around the long sides of the device. Their display is also one of the cornerstones of the their new MyUX experience which allows users to customize how they are able to interact with their phones. From gestures to pull down the notification shade by swiping and even lighting up for notifications, Motorola is looking to make a large device more functional with one hand.

A Camera Experience That Makes Sense

The Motorola Edge+ comes with the same camera 108-megapixel module that we’ve seen in recent flagships including the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and the Xiaomi Mi 10. It has the quad pixel technology that we’ve been hearing about. In essence, this technology combines 4 pixels to increase the amount of light being captured. This is complemented with an 8-megapixel sensor with a telephoto lens capable of 3x optical zoom; a 16-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide lens with a 117° field of view; and a time of flight sensor.

Cameras on the Motorola Edge+ will be able to shoot 6K video video footage. Users will also be able to take 20-megapixel pictures while shooting video. The camera array also has dual OIS on the main and telephoto lenses to minimise shaking. Motorola is touting that the Edge+ comes with the most advanced stabilisation which combines OIS and EIS for superior video stabilization. The front camera is a 25-megapixel sensor with an aperture of f/2.0.

Motorola is looking to give one of the most well rounded experiences on a smartphone with the Edge+. To that end, the company has said that it has equipped the smartphone with the loudest, most powerful dual speaker setup and a 3.5mm jack. The sound experience on the Edge+ also calibrated by GRAMMY Award winning company, Waves.

The Edge+ comes with Bluetooth 5.1 LE, NFC and WiFi 6 connectivity. Also along for the ride is a USB Type C (3.1) connection. It is equipped with an on-screen fingerprint sensor. It is also touting a 5000mAh battery which has support for 18W fast charging, 15W wireless charging and 5W reverse charging. The Edge+ is also rated IP68 for dust and water resistance.

Scaled Back for Affordability: the Motorola Edge

Along with the Motorola Edge+, the company announced a scaled back version called the Motorola Edge. While the phone keeps the ethos of the new flagship device, the company has scaled specifications back a little bit to keep the price more affordable.

The Motorola Edge will be coming with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor paired with 6GB of DDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS2.1 on-board storage. It also has a smaller battery at 4,500mAh which has support for 15W fast charging. However, it will not support wireless and reverse charging.

The camera module on the Edge is a triple sensor setup with a smaller 64-megapixel sensor. It also lacks the time of flight sensor from the Edge+. The phone also doesn’t support WiFi 6. Instead, it supports WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac. It also comes with a USB Type C (2.0) instead and is only rated IP54 for dust and water resistance.

However, both versions will be coming equipped with Android 10 with Motorola’s near stock experience.

Pricing & Availability

The Motorola Edge will be available in Europe starting in May, 2020 for €699 (USD$767/MYR3,298). It will be making its way to markets in Latin America, Asia Pacific and the United States shortly after. It will be available in Solar Black and Midnight Magenta.

The Motorola Edge+ will be heading to the U.S. on May 14, 2020. It will be retailing at USD$999 (MYR4,354). The Edge+ will be available in Thunder Grey and Smoky Sangria. It is confirmed to be heading to India and select Latin American markets.

No news just yet on the Edge and Edge+ coming to Malaysia.

Portugal Sees the OPPO Find X2 Lite

After months in the rumour mill as the OPPO Reno3 Youth, it looks like the OPPO Find X2 Lite is now official. The Find X2 Lite has been launched in Portugal and should see its way to other markets pretty soon.

The Find X2 Lite comes with a smaller 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a a dew drop notch for the selfie camera. The display has a Full HD+ resolution of 1080×2400 pixels. It has dual SIM capabilities and will be able to support 5G connectivity thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor. This will be supported by 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

On the camera front, the selfie camera of the Find X2 Lite is a 32-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture. The main camera is a quad camera setup with a 48-megapixel main sensor with an f/1.7 aperture. This is complemented with an 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor, 2-megapixel monochrome sensor and an additional 2-megapixel depth sensor. The main camera supports 4K UHD recording and has gyro electronic image stabilisation (EIS).

Pricing & Availability

The New Nokia 8.3 Makes 5G More Affordable Than Ever

Nokia’s brand has a long history in the telecommunications space. After a successful relaunch into the mobile industry a few years ago, HMD Global, is looking to up the ante with their first 5G device – the Nokia 8.3 5G. The company touts the Nokia 8.3 as their future-proof 5G smartphone.

The Nokia 8.3 will come packing the new Snapdragon 765G modular platform which allows for high performance that won’t break the bank. To this end, HMD has taken advantage the chip’s unique offerings to push Nokia devices forward. The new Nokia 8.3 is one of the first smartphones that will be equipped with the new Snapdragon 765G and will be 5G capable. In fact, it will support more bands across the TDD and FDD spectrum than any other devices.

The processor will be paired with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of internal storage. It will also be able to support more memory through the use of microSD cards. It will come with a 6.81-inch IPS LCD display with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080×2400 pixels. It will retain the usual 20:9 aspect ratio with a pixel density of about 386 pixels per inch.

On the camera end, the Nokia 8.3 will be coming with a quad camera setup on the back. We’ve been hearing about it’s “Captain America Shield” design. It looks like that is the case with ZEISS branding in the middle. The Quad camera setup comes with a 64-megapixel main sensor. The sensor is a wide angled sensor with an f/1.89 aperture. The 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor is equipped with an f/2.2 aperture. These sensors are complemented by a 2-megapixel depth sensor and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. All of these are, of course, ZEISS optics. HMD was also touting Log mode video capture on the 8.3 which will be able to bring cinema quality video to the smartphone. On the front, the 8.3 is equipped with a 24-megapixel selfie camera.

HMD Global talked about enhancing the camera experience on the Nokia 8.3 with new features. One of which is the new action cam mode which is similar to the super steady feature we’ve seen in other manufacturers. Of course, being a Nokia device, the smartphone is also capable of recording OZO audio which will support directional sound recording.

The Nokia 8.3 will be powered by a 4,500 mAh lithium polymer battery. HMD is confident the battery and software optimisations will allow the 8.3 to deliver on its “all day battery” promise. It also supports 18W fast charging. The 8.3 will be launching with Android 10 out of the box with the promise of 2 alphabet updates.

Pricing & Availability

The Nokia 8.3 is expected to be available sometime in March or early April in selected markets. It will be available in Polar Night, a deep shade of blue. Prices for the device will start at €599 (MYR 2,822.77).
