ACAMS Launches Korea Chapter, Announces CAMS Korean Scholarship Winners

The new chapter for AFC professionals comes as part of ACAMS’ ongoing commitment to support the fight against illicit finance throughout Korea

WASHINGTON, June 29, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — ACAMS, a leading global membership organization dedicated to ending illicit finance, is strengthening its support for anti-financial crime professionals in Korea with the creation of a new ACAMS chapter and a scholarship program for Korean anti-financial crime (AFC) professionals. The new chapter—the 64th in the ACAMS network—will serve as a platform for ongoing education, knowledge-sharing, and networking for AFC practitioners engaged in financial-crime prevention in Korea’s public and private sectors.

Attended by AFC professionals from Korea, the launch in Seoul featured opening remarks by Korean Member of Parliament Yun ChangHyun and a special keynote address by Joshua Johnson, Senior Sanctions Coordinator for the Office of Economic Sanctions Policy and Implementation at the U.S. Department of State.

As part of the launch, the chapter convened a panel of experts to discuss building public-private partnerships to fight illicit finance, featuring speakers Ryu YoungHo, Team Leader at the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), Kendrick Yeung, Deputy Attaché for U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, Jean Chung Managing Director, Regional Head, CFCC Advisory, at Standard Chartered, and Hwang SeokJin, a professor at Dongkuk University.

At the event, ACAMS separately announced 6 winners of the CAMS Scholarship for Korean compliance practitioners in the AFC space. In addition to receiving a one-year membership to ACAMS, the scholarship winners will seek to become Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (CAMS) with a full waiver of associated fees for study materials.

Widely viewed as the global gold standard certification for anti-money laundering (AML) professionals, the CAMS program trains applicants on the international standards for detecting, investigating, and reporting suspicious financial activity and illicit money flows.

“As a platform for cross-sector collaboration in the AFC space, our chapters reflect the core belief of ACAMS that we are more effective in preventing illicit finance when we work together,” said ACAMS COO Mariah Gause. “The new ACAMS Korea Chapter will help drive conversations on how to fight financial crime more effectively and foster a community of dedicated AFC professionals who will share best practices on safeguarding the financial sector and saving lives.”

“We’re also proud to award our CAMS Scholarship to 6 remarkable Korean professionals to support their compliance journeys,” she said. “As our first scholarship designed for a national market, this initiative reflects the commitment shared by ACAMS and the recipients to prevent criminals from exploiting Korea’s private sector. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for these talented scholarship recipients.”

DERMALOG’s smart border control solution receives innovation award

Once again, the German Design Council has honored technical innovations with its German Innovation Award in Berlin. DERMALOG Identification Systems GmbH received an award for its new camera system that simplifies border checks.

BERLIN and HAMBURG, Germany, June 16, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — With its CT1 Camera Tower, DERMALOG has developed a new technology for automated face capture. The solution’s core is DERMALOG’s integrated facial recognition, which ensures that the system automatically adjusts to a person’s head height. An expert jury of the German Design Council has now honored the innovative camera system with the German Innovation Award 2022.

From a distance of up to 2 m, the CT1 captures faces and provides portraits that meet the latest ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) requirements. In addition, the DERMALOG solution features integrated PAD (Presentation Attack Detection) and a non-contact body temperature check. As a result, the CT1 is particularly suitable for operation in the area of screened national borders.

“Biometrics is becoming increasingly important in the field of border control,” says DERMALOG CEO Günther Mull. “For example, biometric data is an important component of the future European Union entry/exit system. Our automated solutions significantly contribute to secure and fast data processing and ensure a seamless process at border crossings.”

Besides the CT1 Camera Tower, DERMALOG offers another innovative solution with the DERMALOG Self Registration Kiosk. In addition to facial recognition, this kiosk also captures passport and fingerprint data. Both systems are already successfully in operation and support border authorities in numerous countries.

[MWC 2022] HUAWEI Brings the Latest Flagship MateBook X Pro and Super Device to the Game

HUAWEI’s MateBook series, introduced back in 2019, marks a new age for HUAWEI. Not just HUAWEI though, it marks a new age for smartphone makers that are not Apple. To be fair to other manufacturers though, HUAWEI is not the first smartphone-first manufacturer that makes PCs. Its biggest competitor in the Android smartphone market used to make notebook PCs as well.

Still, while other smartphone manufacturers have either left the smartphone market or abandoning the PC market, HUAWEI gladly embraces the market, shifting focus from making productivity focused Android tablets and upping the game in terms of a complete ecosystem that works seamlessly together for work and play. It does seem like they are learning from the biggest ecosystem outside of the Android world, Apple. Let us be honest though, it is not such a bad thing, this total coverage of the ecosystem thing.

HUAWEI’s most premium notebook for the discerning users is the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro. There is a new one for 2022. On paper at least, it looks quite special.

HUAWEI MateBook X pro

Source: HUAWEI

It shares pretty much the same design from the old MateBook X Pro, or almost every other MateBook bred to existence. It is also the thinnest MateBook device in its range. At 15.5mm though, it is a little thicker than its predecessor. It gained some weight too at 1.38 kg over 1.33 kg of the 2021 variant. The minor heft gain for the MateBook X Pro 2022 comes with some extra power to make the MateBook X Pro the ultimate thin-and-light though.

You get a slightly bigger display now at 14.2-inch. With bigger display too, HUAWEI can squeeze a little bit more display out of it at 3,120 by 2,080 pixels to achieve an impressive 264 pixels per inch, higher than the predecessor. It covers 92.5% of the laptop body, which is even more than before too, leaving us to wonder how they made the bezels even thinner.

It is a stunning display too. The 3.1K LTPS panel produces up to 500nits of light at DisplayHDR 400 standards. It boasts 1,500:1 contrast ratio on its 1.07-billion colours on tap. It also offers an average △E<1 in P3 and sRGB standards. It is not a gaming display, but the 3:2 aspect ratio display still offers up to 90Hz in refresh rate. Did we mention that it is a touch sensitive display too? What we are saying is that you are really going to enjoy this display, no matter what you do.

The 2022 HUAWEI MateBook X Pro flagships come with class leading six-speaker set up with HUUAWEI SOUND. There are two tweeters for brilliant and detailed higher-end frequencies from the top firing speaker grilles. The other two are mashed to create a woofer sandwich which, in theory, should produce even more powerful low frequencies for deeper, more immersive bass notes, more boom. The speaker array should also benefit users when it comes to video calls alongside four far-field mics with AI Noise Cancellation algorithm.

Powered by an 11th Generation Intel Core i7-1195G7 CPU, the MateBook X Pro might sound a little old fashioned, but the processor is still quite a powerful one. It also packs Intel’s Iris Xe Graphics to ensure that the display gets enough juice to run on full chat. Of course, we would like to see what the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro could do with 12th Generation Intel processors.

HUAWEI Super Device Ecrosystem

It is not a new device that HUAWEI released here. It is more of introduction of a complete ecosystem for HUAWEI’s many devices. A sort of unifying piece to puts all of HUAWEI’s devices together.

The HUAWEI Super Device centers itself on HUAWEI’s PC experience. It starts from HUAWEI’s MateBook devices with the latest version of the HUAWEI PC Manager. The new ecosystem does not just allow HUAWEI’s devices to share screens and quickly share files across the connected devices. It now allows each device to be individual device modules to form a larger collaboration tool. You can take up a video call from your smartphone for example and later transfer it to a HUAWEI MateBook when you get yourself in front of one.

Super Device also introduces HUAWEI’s Mobile App Engine for their PC devices. Mobile App Engine gives HUAWEI MateBook devices access to the HUAWEI AppGallery. That also means that the Windows 11 device can now work with mobile apps reserved for the smartphone ecosystem that HUAWEI has built over the years, allowing users to be even more productive than ever with their HUAWEI MateBook devices.

Availability

HUAWEI’s Super Device function will be shipped with the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro, MateStation X, MateBook E, MatePad Paper, and MatePad. All of the devices that are launched in their MWC 2022 announcement. While HUAWEI mentions that existing HUAWEI MateBook devices will be able to take advantage of the new Super Device feature, there are no mentions on whether existing smartphone and tablet devices will get the function. At this point, judging by HUAWEI’s update history, older devices might not be getting the new Super Device feature.

There are also no mentions on when the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro will hit the markets. It will be priced at EU 1,899 (MYR 8,923*) when it is available. There are also no colour options for the new flagship MateBook as well, just a plain Grey.

*Approximately based on exchange rate of EU€ 1 = MYR 4.70 as of 01/03/2021 on xe.com

Global Security Industry to be Powered by Rising Need for Niche Security Solutions and Rapid Advancements in Technology

The demand for surveillance technologies such as security cameras and advanced electro-optics, video analytics, RADAR, and LIDARs to intensify, reveals Frost & Sullivan

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 17, 2021 — Frost & Sullivan’s recent analysis, Digitization and Advanced Analytics Power the Global Security Industry, finds that threats posed by the proliferation of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), frictionless borders, and integrated border stations will expand this industry worldwide. Segmented into three categories—critical national infrastructure (CNI), public safety, and border security—this market is estimated to garner $230.79 billion in revenues by 2030 from $172.4 billion in 2020, an uptick of 3%. Public safety will lead the growth, securing 72.8% market share and generating the highest revenue as the pandemic has led disaster and emergency management forces to spend significantly on situational awareness systems.

For further information on this analysis, please visit: http://frost.ly/5fi

"While the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily paused the industry, key investment areas remain unchanged. It opened new avenues of security spending in terms of pandemic response and public safety for the long and short terms," said Himanshu Garg, Industry Principal, Aerospace, Defense & Security Practice at Frost & Sullivan. "Escalating need for niche security solutions, rapid advancements in technology, and budget pressures will drive the industry to innovative revenue models to capture opportunities."

Garg added: "The increasing number of identity theft incidents and security leaks has accelerated the adoption of biometric technology for identity and access control across CNI, public safety, and border security applications. This has further emphasized the deployment of surveillance technologies. As a result, the demand for security cameras and advanced electro-optics, video analytics, RADAR, LIDARs, wearables, and sophisticated sensors is likely to inflate significantly over the forecast period."

To tap the imminent market potential, participants should consider:

  • Adopting biometric technology for identity and access control, such as facial biometrics in airports, metros, and other public places.
  • Screening and detection growth opportunities, especially at airports and checkpoints. Create measures that improve safety while reducing the screening time.
  • Developing evolving technologies, such as behavioral analytics, for tremendous scope in the security industry because analytics has changed the overall dimension of security systems being deployed and used.
  • Focusing on modern-day emergency management, which relies on end-to-end collaboration, communication, and real-time information sharing between various stakeholders, with opportunities in integrating various emergency communications.
  • Countering evolving threats such as usage of driverless cars, autonomous drones, etc., as weapons of mass destruction. Law enforcement agencies seek counter-UAS to detect and neutralize unmanned aerial threats and remote weapon stations to guard borders without endangering lives.

Herta Awarded the Highly Competitive “COVID-19 Response Seal of Excellence” From the European Commission

BARCELONA, Spain, June 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — In May 2020, Herta was awarded with the COVID-19 Seal of Excellence certificate delivered by the European Commission (EC) for the project AWARE.

Seal Of Excellence Herta
Seal Of Excellence Herta

AWARE was sent for evaluation to the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator Pilot. As stated by the EC, the EIC Accelerator Pilot offers Europe’s brightest and boldest entrepreneurs the chance to step forward and request funding for breakthrough ideas with the potential to create entirely new markets or revolutionize existing ones. Highly innovative SMEs with a clear commercial ambition and a potential for high growth and internationalization are the prime target. The 20th of March 2020, the EC made an urgent call through the EIC Accelerator Pilot for technologies and innovations that could help in treating, testing, monitoring or other aspects of the Coronavirus outbreak.

The COVID-19 Seal of Excellence is a highly competitive quality label awarded to project proposals which were evaluated to have a high excellence and impact to deserve funding in this special call, but did not receive it due to current EC’s budgetary constraints.

AWARE proposes a hybrid edge and distributed solution for advanced video analytics, including real-time face recognition and crowd behaviour analysis. Part of the computing pipeline is executed on-premise, on low-power and small-size edge stations using Deep Neural Network accelerator hardware. This allows saving costs and increasing system’s scalability, efficiency and ease-of-installation. HERTA’s cutting-edge algorithms, which are able to identify people even when wearing masks and monitor crowd density, are integrated in the solution. The automatic control of social distancing and the identification of persons in access controls without the need of removing masks become vitally important to control the spread of COVID-19, and are Herta’s main focus to fight against the pandemic.

HONOR ViewPad 6 is the Modern 5G Capable Tablet for the Youths

HONOR had a big global launch just now. They launched a lot of things. One of the big things they launched is their very own high-end tablet, the HONOR ViewPad 6. It looks very much like the HUAWEI MatePad Pro save for certain details. For one, the back of the tablet has a slightly different finish. The camera layout and design is more reminiscent of the OPPO Find X2 as well, from the looks of it.

The insides are slightly different too. The HONOR ViewPad 6 packs the HiSilicon Kirin 985 instead of the newer HiSilicon 990 you find on the HUAWEI MatePad Pro. You still get 5G connectivity with the HONOR ViewPad 6 though. You still get WiFi 6+ in connectivity. You also get 2K in resolution from the 10.4 FullView display. They also tout powerful speakers that boasts great audio. If they are anything like the HUAWEI MatePad Pro, we can believe that.

We know that the HONOR ViewPad 6 will come with HONOR’s proprietary User Interface (UI) based on Android 10. While it comes with Android 10, it does not come with Google’s Play Store. Rather, you are getting their AppGallery ecosystem. From the teasers we see in the launch, there is also the HUAWEI equivalent to the M-Pen, the Magic Pen for the tablet.

However, they did not announce the price of the HONOR ViewPad 6. They say that the price will be revealed on the 13th of June 2020. It should be available in certain markets from June 2020 onward. There is no mention of whether Malaysia gets the device that same time with other markets. We are expecting the tablet to come to Malaysia at the same time or before other countries outside of China though.

Living with HUAWEI Mobile Services and AppGallery Part 3: Hey, We Got a New Phone!

We started this journey over two weeks ago. We also switched to a HUAWEI P40 Pro review unit last week as an HMS test device on a full-time basis. Starting it up and starting afresh, we thought we might want to give the HUAWEI device the best chance it has to stack up against all the other Android devices we encountered. That is why, rather than loading it with the set-up we had on the HUAWEI Nova 7i, we went with Phone Clone to get it to clone a HUAWEI Mate 20X I owned.

The result of that was the transfer of more than just the apps we had on the HUAWEI Nova 7i. We had more than we bargained with Prime Video and Telegram ported in. We had Facebook and Instagram ported too, alongside some of our favourite games like Brawl Starts and PUBG Mobile. More about Phone Clone app and the HUAWEI P40 Pro in our in-depth review later though. Note that the HUAWEI P40 Pro is a review unit and it is due for a return soon. So we only have a limited time with HUAWEI’s latest photography king and switch back to the Nova 7i.

Phone Clone is The Way to Go

The point is you can still run Android apps on the HUAWEI’s EMUI 10. It is still an Android 10 device after all. Well, just be sure that everything runs nicely. We found that Instagram will not turn over on the HUAWEI P40 Pro. It could just be a device issue, but that is quite annoying to us. The upgrade also comes with a big step up in the camera of course. But that is not our focus today.

The focus today is to test it out as a daily driver for the week. We popped in the YES 4G SIM card we had for our review devices and its ready to roll. Okay, it is ready to somewhat roll.

Of course, we had our concerns with the apps. For one, there is now no official support for the apps. Where do we update the apps? How do we update the apps? If I’m transferring WhatsApp from my older device, do I use Gmail still? We may not be able to answer all the questions you and I have.

Right out of the box, if you did not use Phone Clone to copy your WhatsApp data over to your new HUAWEI device, you are going to lose everything. If you use Phone Clone and WhatsApp did not copy its complete data over, you lose everything. There is no carry over of backup data because HUAWEI cannot back up to Gmail now. It is like switching from an Apple device to Android device. That is kind of a bummer.

We found a solution to that though, from HUAWEI’s own community site. It is not the simplest instructions to follow, because there is a lot of navigation around restoring your WhatsApp data in your HUAWEI smartphone. If you want to give it try you can head to their website. It still works (sort of) on the HUAWEI Nova 7i and HUAWEI P40 Pro as well. So that should not be too big of an issue.

We found that installing Google Drive may not work as well, because you cannot actually sign into your Google account. That, and a lot of other Google apps. At least you get your WhatsApp chat history back, right? You have to jump through some hoops, yes; but it works.

We did not manage to get Netflix ported over, or even working for that matter. At least Amazon’s Prime Video works well though. We cannot tell if it is only streaming in HD quality or not, but it works at least, and that is now part of our entertainment.

The next challenge is to update the apps. For that, we started using APKPure and Aptoide. Mind you, you cannot get these two app markets on AppGallery too, so you have to download them from their respective mirror sites.

New in AppGallery

Since we last spoke about the AppGallery though, there has been some additions to the ecosystem. There are some new apps there and here. A lot of which, we are not concerned about. One of which, could be interesting for residents of Malaysia. The MySejahtera app developed by Malaysia’s ministry of health to keep yourself in check of your own health status in the COVID-19 situation now. Of course, during the Movement Control Order restrictions now, food is important, and you have Dahmakan app in the HUAWEI device anyway. Nope, no others so far. Not even Grab.

You could, theoretically get Grab working on your HUAWEI through Phone Clone as well. Again, there is going to be update issues later. But I guess we can cross that bridge when we get there.

Still, if you are going to rely on the AppGallery solely, Dahmakan is your best friend.

Quick Apps is a function that is on the HUAWEI AppGallery and a feature like no other. It is a sort of ‘pre-installed’ kit for devices with the AppGallery. They idea is that you can just access the Quick Apps gallery, pick the apps you want to use, and launch it without installing it. Where is it installed? In the cloud perhaps. But the essential point is that you can just use the apps as long as you are connected to the internet.

That is what the McDonald’s app is on the HUAWEI AppGallery, a Quick App. Of course, you need an active internet connection anyway for the app to work in the first place, so it does make plenty of sense. It also does not take up any space on your smartphone which is quite clever as well; a way to save storage space on your smartphone, if you might.

You can even add the app on your home screen so you can access it again anytime after your first visit. Just hit the app menu and add it to your home screen, very easy. We are not sure it is the most convenient way to discover an app though, because it is lodged very far down the AppGallery. You have to scroll all the way down to find the separate Quick Apps gallery.

Still, better than nothing right? There are plenty games within that gallery, none of which we play. Because the AppGallery is not segregated from one country to another yet, you can also find some broadcast apps on the platform. It is an interesting platform, if used correctly. Why not have WhatsApp there too? That is an idea.
