The Second Annual Award Ceremony for International Video Contest of My China Story held in Yantai


BEIJING, Jan. 4, 2021 — Nearing the end of 2020, an eventful year for most, China International Publishing Group (CIPG) hosts the My China Story award ceremony for excellent films created by foreigners both abroad and living in China. Content creators from around the world document their lives and experiences in China through filming short videos.

The event begins with the screening event where guests gather to view 33 award-winning short films, getting the opportunity to view the "China Stories" experienced by other foreigners just like themselves.

After the screening, everyone headed upstairs to participate in the seminar, where several guests took the stage and shared ideas for improving how we document our experiences in or with China and how we go about sharing our stories with the world. At the seminar, video creator, Leo, from Germany, shares with us his first time in China nearly 40 years ago in 1984 and his reflections about life in China at that time. Father-son YouTube duo from the UK, Lee and Oli Barrett, also relate their experience filming and visiting the "enormous" Three Gorges Dam for the first time.

Downstairs, Liu Bianjing, a university student in China from Cameroon Africa, prepares to take the stage. He claims to be one of the best, if not the best, foreign singers of traditional Chinese Henan Opera; previously having won second prize on television competing against Chinese singers.

The grand prize is revealed by the host, awarding RMB30,000 to the first prize winner for their film about the magnificent annual gala performance and the tight-knit community of workers in a Chinese factory.

The video follows American host, Jack, who takes us through the ceremony showing us the most interesting, note-worthy highlights. We get a chance to talk to content creators and briefly hear exactly what it is they do in China that makes their own experience so unique.

Inaugural Shanghai Electric Cup ‘Industrial App’ Awards Given to 16 Outstanding Entries, Empowering Digital Innovation for Energy Industry


SHANGHAI, Dec. 31, 2020 — Shanghai Electric (the "Company") (SEHK: 02727, SSE: 601727), the world’s leading manufacturer and supplier of electric power generation equipment, industrial equipment and integration services, has recently concluded a five-month industrial innovation application competition. The inaugural ‘Shanghai Electric Cup’ was launched in July this year with the support of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization and the Shanghai Industrial Internet Association. Aimed at fostering an environment of digital innovation, the competition saw 140 entries from around the world take a total of 16 prizes.

The first time to organize this event, Shanghai Electric took the opportunity for the company’s internal and external teams to promote industrial innovation and accelerate digital transformation. The theme of the competition aimed to push applicants to develop practical applications for use in industrial settings, and called for a focus on connecting four concepts – smart cities, smart energy, smart manufacturing and smart transportation – four areas that outline the future direction of Shanghai Electric.

Of the 140 entries from domestic and international teams, the top three prizes were awarded to 16 projects, ten of which were from Shanghai Electric and six from other companies. The Company’s Central Research Institute signed project incubation agreements with four of the award-winning external teams. Shanghai Electric Digital Technology (SEDT) and other six companies reached an ecosystem cooperation agreement for SEunicloud, Shanghai Electric’s industrial internet platform.

About the competition and the unveiling of the winners, Shanghai Electric President, Huang Ou said, "On the path of improving our skills in 3D design and industrial applications, the extraordinary achievements of those participants we see in this year’s contest are the small steps in accelerating the digital transformation of Shanghai Electric, but those joint efforts have amounted to a huge step forward for the entire company."

"From digitizing product models to business models, this competition has laid the foundation for Shanghai Electric to build a new ecosystem for SEunicloud, as well as gathered a specialized team to speed up the digital transformation of our company," he added.

Also unveiled at the awards ceremony, the upgraded SEunicloud Industrial Internet Platform 2.0 revealed improvements in terms of the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Business Intelligence (BI), and Creative Intelligence (CI). With these upgrades, the platform will further accelerate Shanghai Electric’s digital transformation and marks yet another substantial step forward in the construction of Shanghai Electric’s Industrial Internet.

The 2.0 release features a new AI big data module capable of providing data value displays and business analysis for a multitude of industrial scenarios. The upgraded Business Intelligence module utilizes fast data processing and visualization tools to produce intuitive displays and enable intelligent analysis across huge datasets. In addition, through an inbuilt visual development integrated system, the platform can be used as an InaaS (Innovation-as-a-Service) platform.

Shanghai Electric’s focus on digitization and development is reflected in a consistently high R&D investment rate of over 3.4%. This number is intended to be higher for development in new industries, predicted at an increase of 6% from 2019, and investment in pre-research and development which is expected to see an increase of 11%.

A multitude of photo creators managed to interpret the joys of everyday life before their eyes with mobile photos in different styles, from vibrant portraits and spectacular landscapes to splendid nights and fleeting memories.

There are six categories under the vivo VISION+ Mobile Photography Awards 2020, including Portrait, Night, Landscape, Motion, Memories, and Story. Zhang Yu surmised that kids call the gesture as seen in the photo, where one’s hand is tucked into an outstretched shirt collar as a "Big Mouth Monster". The moment that kids are playing in the shape of "Big Mouth Monsters" was captured by the creator with his smartphone, serving as a shining beacon of hope in the midst of a difficult 2020.

Camping Night with Beloved Friends, a creation by Rifqi Moch Lutpi from Indonesia, was awarded with the "Honorable Mention" award. This photograph displays three beloved friends chatting beside a burning bonfire in a dark night. The creator expressed subtle thinking, "In my life, camping is the most exciting story, the greatest moment… We should enjoy every moment in life and live it to the fullest with a rich variety of activities."

A multitude of excellent mobile photo submissions across the Portrait, Night, Landscape, Motion, Memories and Story competitive categories. Under the Story category in the form of mobile video imaging, Opera Watch, the winning submission by Chen Lei from China, focuses on a traditional Sichuan Opera troupe that brings human-culture co-existence to life in smooth scenes with folk drum music.

Finland Tax-System Modernization Program Named Best Project for 2020

HELSINKI, Dec. 22, 2020 — A major IT program that overhauled Finland’s national tax system through implementation of software from Fast Enterprises (FAST) has been recognized as the year’s best project by the Finnish chapter of the International Project Management Association. The recognition marked the first time in five years that a non-infrastructure project has received the award.

Finnish Tax Administration (FTA), the recipient of the 2020 Finland Project of the Year award, was recognized for successfully completing the tax-system modernization program known as the Valmis program—a high stakes undertaking of national significance and the largest IT program in the agency’s history.  

"FTA’s Valmis program was selected from a list of very important and successful projects, including large-scale infrastructure and construction projects," said Ilama Vesa, chairman of Project Professionals Finland, the association that grants the award. "Without an effective tax system, you can’t fund programs and services that are essential to Finland’s citizens. This project provides benefits to people throughout the country."

The five-and-a-half-year Valmis program replaced over 70 legacy tax applications with GenTax, a tax-administration software package from U.S. software developer and government services provider FAST. FAST also served as the program’s prime contractor, providing FTA with project-lifecycle services to implement all of Finland’s major tax and revenue programs in GenTax.

Finland’s tax programs, such as corporate and individual income taxes, value-added tax, real-estate tax, and gift and inheritance taxes, were implemented in GenTax and released to production incrementally over the course of the multi-year program. With the final group of tax programs entering production in late 2019, FTA now uses GenTax to manage over €70 billion in annual tax revenue.

In total, the program entailed the training of over 4,000 new users, integration of more than 250 interfaces for exchanging data with other systems, development of hundreds of agency-specific reports and dashboards based on data managed and tracked by GenTax, and execution of over 50,000 system test scenarios. In addition to automating many tasks that required manual work in FTA’s legacy systems, the GenTax system also provides web-based taxpayer self-service features that greatly increased the number of tax returns filed online in 2019. 

Carmen Kurushima, a FAST associate partner and the company’s project manager for the Valmis program, said commitment and coordination between multiple program stakeholders were key to project success.

"Projects of this scope and complexity don’t succeed unless there is buy-in and communication from all individuals and organizations involved in the project," Kurushima said. "The entire Valmis team was dedicated to project collaboration and a common goal—successfully implementing GenTax as Finland’s modernized tax system."

In addition to FTA and FAST, multiple public and private-sector organizations played an important role on the program. Nortal, a Finland-based provider of consulting and technology services, supported the implementation of GenTax as a subcontractor to FAST. FTA partner agencies and additional organizations throughout Finland and the European Union also provided program support, helping to ensure that interfaces with external systems were securely implemented and tested within scheduled program milestones.

"This was a truly transformational program for FTA," said Virpi Pikkarainen, FTA program director. "It not only changed the technology that we use to manage Finland’s tax programs, it also changed our business processes, allowing us to provide more effective and efficient services to our taxpayers."

James Harrison, a FAST founding partner, agreed that the VALMIS program was a major achievement and said that its success is particularly rewarding considering the many challenges on the project.

"When you consider that hundreds of program personnel from different agencies, businesses, and countries were able to successfully modernize a national tax system, it’s really an impressive feat," Harrison said. "We’re proud that our software, services, and staff played such an important role in the success of the Valmis program."
