Vivo X100 Series Lands In Malaysia; Prices Start at RM3,499

The Vivo X100 series made its debut late last November in China. The new X100 series is the next edition of Vivo’s ambitions to be the go-to camera smartphone for the masses. The new X100 series comes with the latest imaging technology from both Vivo and its partner – ZEISS.

vivo X100 series 08

Powerfully Similar With Minute Differences

Vivo is touting the X100 series as its most powerful flagship to date. Both the X100 Pro and the vanilla X100 run on the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 processor. This processor marks a change in architecture that focuses on supercharging smartphone performance. Previously, smartphone processors came with a combination of performance and efficiency cores. With the Dimensity 9300, this paradigm shifts to only performance cores. However, that doesn’t mean that power efficiency is taking a backseat.

When it comes to the silicon, both smartphones differ only in their image processing chip; the X100 comes with the Vivo V2 which debuted last year while the X100 Pro comes with the brand new Vivo V3. The Vivo V3 comes with updated fabrication technology and supports more complex imaging features like multi-concurrent AI-ISP architecture and second-generation Frame Info Tunneling (FIT) technology. Both the Vivo X100 and X100 Pro come with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal memory. No lower variants or the 1TB variant have been indicated at this time.

vivo X100 series 10

The X100 comes with a 5,000mAh battery that supports 120W Dual-Cell FlashCharge. The Vivo X100 Pro, on the other hand, comes with a larger 5,400mAh battery with support for wireless FlashCharge and 100W Dual-Cell FlashCharge. Both versions of the X100 come with a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

ZEISS Co-engineered Cameras with Improved Features

The Vivo X100 series also carries forward the partnership between ZEISS and Vivo when it comes to camera technology. The new X100 Pro comes packed with some of the latest innovations when it comes to smartphone photography. That said both versions of the X100 come with formidable setups.

vivo X100 series 13

The vanilla X100 comes with a triple camera setup with a 50-megapixel VCS True Colour sensor for the main camera. This is complemented by a 64-megapixel ZEISS Telephoto sensor and a 50-megapixel super wide-angle camera. Meanwhile, the X100 Pro ups the ante with a 1-inch, 50-megapixel ZEISS sensor as its main camera. This is complemented by a 50-megapixel ZEISS APO Floating Telephoto sensor and a 50-megapixel Super wide-angle camera. The 50-megapixel ZEISS APO Floating telephoto sensor comes with the new Vario-Apo-Sonnar standard from ZEISS. Thanks to this, you’ll be able to take more detailed and vibrant close-up and long-distance shots even at 6X and 10X zoom. Both of the smartphones come with the ZEISS T* coating.

The Vivo X100 will be retailing for RM3,499 while the X100 Pro will be priced at RM4,599. Both variants will be available in two colours: Asteroid Black and Startrail Blue.

vivo Launches the Y78 5G in Malaysia for MYR 1,399 – Flagship Parts, Entry-Level Price

Budget smartphones can be a nightmare sometimes. Most of the time we will only recommend a budget smartphone for those who are looking for a secondary device to work with. If you are looking for a daily driver, we would say that you might be much better off spending a little more on mid-range smartphones. It is 2023 though and things change all the time, entry-level smartphones can be good devices now, like this vivo Y78 5G that they just launched.

On paper, it ticks all the right boxes. It has 8GB of RAM, 256GB in storage, Android 14, and even a 64-Megapixel camera. The processor though is not a mid-range system on a chip (SoC) like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 700 series processors. Instead, you get the entry-level Snapdragon 695. That does not mean that you are getting short handed here. You still get 5G connectivity like most modern smartphones do now. It is also capable of taking videos at 4K resolution when you need it to. It will last even longer than most flagships today thanks to its 5,000mAh battery and the fact that the SoC is less power hungry than even the latest mid-range smartphones.

What greets you when you pick up the device is not some random LCD display that offers 720p resolution. You get a proper 120Hz AMOLED experience with a Full HD+ resolution on the 6.78-inch display. There is a 16-Megapixel front facing camera too on top of the display for video conferencing and selfies. Out the back is a 64-Megapixel shooter that is helped also by two other 2-Megapixel cameras for better depth and detailing; that is all you need really.

Within all the glass and aluminium body, you will find a huge 5,000mAh battery as mentioned before. It is not some old battery technology that offers you days of battery life but keeps you near a wall socket when it runs out too. It still offers 44W fast charging to keep charging times below two hours. There is even support for dual-SIM, which is expected these days.

The Vivo Y78 5G will come in Dreamy Gold and Flare Black colour options. It will set you back MYR 1,399, which is really not a lot of money for a smartphone at this calibre. For more information on the new entry-level smartphone, you can visit Vivo’s website.

The vivo V27e Comes with a Ring Light and Flagship Level 64-Megapixel Camera for Only MYR 1,299

What choices do you have when you can only spend up to MYR 1,500 for a smartphone? Can you even get something decent for that kind of money? It turns out, you can with vivo’s latest MYR 1,299 V27e smartphone.

The vivo V27e’s price range places it squarely in the entry-level smartphone segment. What you get though, is a little more than entry-level.

For starters, you get a 64-Megapixel shooter out the back of the device. That main shooter also packs something vivo calls the Hybrid Image Stabilisation feature. That is buzzword for a combination of Optical Image Stabilisation and Electronic Image Stabilisation, a sort of mix for both physical and software defined stabilization to achieve better stability when taking photos and even videos. They call the 64-Megapixel sensor an ‘Ultra-Sensing’ sensor as well. vivo claims that the sensor offers more light exposure and that allows the sensor to capture 600% more light for even better detailing and photo quality than ever before, especially in low-light conditions. That main camera is paired with a 2-Megapixel macro camera and a 2-Megapixel depth sensor.

vivo V27e Launch 3

The 64-Megapixel shooter is also paired with something they call an Aura Light. It works together with portrait mode to create something they call the Aura Light Portrait. The LED flash out the back is shaped like a tiny right light. The arrangement also means that the light is diffused and softer on the skin allowing for ‘studio-level’ lighting effects for better and natural looking portraits.

Out the front is a 32-Megapixel camera sitting at the top section of the display. The vivo V27e can take advantage of the 32-Megapixel front-facing shooter with an array of different templates and shoot modes too.

Speaking of the front-facing camera, the display that it sits out of is impressive too. It is a 6.62-inch Full HD+ display. It is also an AMOLED display that offers colour contrasts and vividness like no other display can in its class. At the same time, you get 120Hz refresh rate out of the display, quite unheard of for smartphones in its price range.

Keeping Android 13 based Funtouch 13 running smoothly on the 120Hz AMOLED display is a MediaTek Helio G99 system on a chip (SoC). The processor is built upon the 6nm process technology for better efficiency and better power delivery. It is not a 5G chip unfortunately, meaning you do not get 5G connectivity out of the vivo V27e. The SoC gets up to 12GB of RAM to work with paired with up to 256GB of storage. To keep everything going for an entire day is a built-in 4,600mAh lithium battery that is capable of 66W charging speeds.

vivo Joins the Fold-able Scene with vivo X Fold and vivo X Note in China

When Samsung and HUAWEI captured the world with their folding smartphones a few years back, they opened an entire can of worms. Samsung stuck to their original design with multiple displays on offer and they made it stick with their second and third iteration of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold as they call it today. Their form factor also became the de facto foldable smartphone layout; just look at the OPPO Find N.

OPPO and HUAWEI are not the only smartphone manufacturers that wants a piece of the foldable smartphone pie with Samsung’s designs. Companies like OnePlus and even Google themselves have expressed interests in building their own version of a smartphone with one folding display and another solid display out front. Now vivo has beaten them both and introduced their own vivo X Fold.

vivo, to be fair, did not just launch the X Fold in China. They also launched their largest smartphone to date – the vivo X Note. In this case, before we talk about the foldable, we do have to at least talk about the vivo X Note.

vivo X Note

VIVO X NOTE
source: vivo

It is vivo’s most powerful candybar smartphone to date. It packs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 for everything that Android 12 needs on the device. For photography, it packs vivo’s own developed V1 chip. That V1 chip powers a 50-Megapixel main camera that is flanked by an 8-Megapixel 5x telephoto camera, a 12-Megapixel 2x telephoto camera, and another 48-Megapixel ultrawide camera. Of course, the new vivo X Note is capable of recording videos at 8K. For selfies, you get a 16-Megapixel front-facing camera sitting in a punch hole in the display.

Speaking of display, it is an expansive 7-inch display that boasts 2K 1440p. It is an LTPO AMOLED display capable of up to 120Hz in refresh rate and down to 1Hz if need be. The brilliant display also offers HDR10+ in colour and contrast which also means watching Netflix or Prime Video on it should be a rather enjoyable experience.

For memory and storage, you get up to 12GB in RAM and 512GB in built-in UFS 3.1 flash module. Right beneath the display is also a large under-disply optical fingerprint sensor for faster and better fingerprint sensor coverage. To keep all of that running an entire day and more is a 5,000mAh battery that is also capable of 80W charging speeds. They say that the vivo X Note can fully charge (from 0%) within 32 minuttes.

vivo X Fold

VIVO X FOLD
source: vivo

The star of the show is vivo’s first foldable device, the vivo X Fold. While you may expect the vivo foldable device to have more in common to its cousin over from OPPO, the X Fold has more in common with Samsung’s Foldable. It is a larger device that the Samsung though.

For starters, the secondary outer display measures 6.53-inch compared to Samsung’s 6.2-inch. Unfold the device and an 8.03-inch display greets you. The outside display is an excellent AMOLED display that boasts Full HD+ resolutions at 21:9 aspect ratio. It is also a speedy display at 120Hz.

The larger main display boasts even more pixels than the outer display, which is quite expected. You get 1,916 by 2,160 pixels from the 8-inch flexible AMOLED panel. It boasts HDR10+ in colour contrast for the best display experience you can get for smartphones currently. It is also an LTPO display, which means that it goes down to 1Hz refresh to extend your battery life.

It shares some similarities with the vivo X Note too. It packs a 50-Megapixel main camera flanked by the same 5x telephoto, 2x telephoto, and high-resolution ultrawide cameras. There is only one front-facing camera though, unlike some of the foldables that we have seen. The 16-Megapixel front-facing camera sits in a punch-hole on the outer display.

The device is powered by the best that the industry has to offer currently, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 system on a chip (SoC). Supporting the powerful SoC is up to 12GB in RAM. You also get up to 512GB of storage for good measure.

Instead of a side mounted fingerprint sensor though, vivo has employed the use of their large under-display optical fingerprint sensor. They have also installed not one, but two fingerprint sensors (one outside, one inside) for maximum convenience for users. vivo also produced their own unique hinge for the folding display that is supposed to minimise the crease of the folding display with a rising aluminium plate supporting the flexing part of the display. It could also help in durability and reliability of the folding display too.

To keep everything happy and running an entire day or more is a 4,600mAh battery pack within its body. It does not charge at 80W like the X Note though. Still 66W charging speeds should bring it from 0% to a full charge in about 37 minutes, which is still rather impressive.

All these things do make it a little heftier than the even the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3. It weighs just over 300g. To be specific, it weighs 311g, 40g heavier than the Samsung. Considering all that it packs though, that is not too big of a weight increase.

Price and Availability

For now, the vivo X Note and X Fold will only be available in China. There are no mentions when vivo will bring the device out of China. Then again, there are no confirmations on whether vivo will be selling the device outside of China. Remember the OPPO Find N? While that was showcased in Malaysia, the device never made it to Malaysia officially.

The vivo X Note will come in three storage and RAM offerings. It starts at 8GB + 256GB configuration at CN¥ 5,999 (MYR 3,990*) and tops out at CN¥ 6,999 (MYR 4,650*) for a 12GB + 512GB configuration.

The vivo X Fold will also be offering in a variety of storage options. It starts from 12GB + 256GB option at CN¥ 8,999 (MYR 5,960*) and tops out at 12GB + 512GB configuration at CN¥ 9,999 (MYR 6,620*).
