Hi2 Global Joins UN Principles for Responsible Investment

NEW YORK, Jan. 13, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Hi2 Global is now a signatory of the United Nations (UN) Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), the world’s leading proponent of responsible investment.

Launched by the UN in 2006 under former Secretary-General Kofi Annan, PRI works to understand the investment implications of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors, and support its international network of investor signatories in incorporating these factors into their investment and ownership decisions.

The PRI is independent and encourages investors to use responsible investment to enhance returns and better manage risks, but does not operate for its own profit. It is supported by, but not part of, the UN.

The PRI has grown consistently since 2006 with 3,826 signatories representing $121.3 trillion of assets under management (AUM) all over the world as of 2021.

The six Principles for Responsible Investment offer a menu of possible actions for incorporating ESG issues into investment practice, which include incorporating ESG issues into investment analysis and decision-making processes, being active owners and incorporating ESG issues into ownership policies and practices, seeking appropriate disclosure on ESG issues by the entities invested, promoting acceptance and implementation of the Principles within the investment industry, working together to enhance effectiveness in implementing the Principles, and reporting on activities and progress towards implementing the Principles.

In implementing them, a signatory contributes to developing a more sustainable global financial system. Hi2 Global founder and CEO Jerry Wang believes PRI frame could greatly improve transparency in the investment universe and be able to bring fund managers to the same level of commitments to responsibility. Hi2 Global is scheduled to release its first PRI report in 2024.

As a global asset allocation platform, Hi2 Global has been incorporating ESG into investment decision-making process since inception in 2014 in New York. The actively managed Hi2 Venture Fund, an early-stage venture capital fund, is committed to responsible investments by focusing on innovative early-stage companies in emerging sectors including fin-tech, consumer-tech, clean-tech and health-tech in the United States, and emerging markets in Asia, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

The first Hi2 Venture Fund launched in 2020 has supported a number of innovation- and tech-driven startups which are committed to generate positive social and environmental impact in emerging markets.

While it has been proven that our portfolio companies have produced plenty of positive outcomes, the following figures would better demonstrate how they are contributing to the welfare of local society – more than 800 jobs have been created in emerging economies including Pakistan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Mexico; women make up 21% of founders and executives while minority founders make up more than 90%; 7 credit-tech startups and 2 digital banks in our portfolio are serving the huge unbanked and immigrant population across emerging markets in Middle East.

Looking forward, Hi2 Global will continue to incorporate ESG issues into investment practice by following the six PRI principles for responsible investment, with a particular focus on innovation-driven startups eyeing on transforming traditional sectors in emerging markets.

Liu Xiaolan, Tencent’s project leader, said that digital technology will move Dunhuang cultural relics online, and people can feel the cultural charm of thousands of years in the digital caves.

Besides, virtual reality (VR) technology is playing an increasing role in the digitalization of the cultural industry. SenseTime, an artificial intelligence unicorn company, has moved Hangzhou West Lake to the AR world, visitors only need to scan the real scene with their mobile phones to open the AR navigation guide mode and experience immersive real scene navigation and virtual and real fusion navigation.

Shenzhen’s cultural industry has maintained a rapid development momentum in the past ten years, with an average annual growth rate of more than 15 percent. Creative design, animation games, digital culture and other industries have showed strong competitiveness, and more than 25 percent of cultural enterprises above the scale have the qualification of national high-tech enterprises.

CCTV+: Today’s China brims with vigor, vitality, resilience: Xi

BEIJING, Jan. 1, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Chinese President Xi Jinping Saturday said today’s China is a country full of vigor, vitality and resilience with dreams coming true thanks to persistent efforts of one generation after another.

Xi made the remarks while delivering an address to extend his best wishes to all the 1.4 billion Chinese people on the New Year’s Eve.

“Today’s China is a country where dreams become reality. The Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games concluded in a resounding success. Chinese winter sports athletes gave their all and achieved extraordinary results. Shenzhou-13, Shenzhou-14 and Shenzhou-15 soared into the heavens. China’s space station was fully completed and our ‘home in space’ is roving in the deep-blue sky. The people’s armed forces marked the 95th birthday and all service members are marching confidently on the great journey of building a strong military. China’s third aircraft carrier Fujian was launched. C919, China’s first large passenger aircraft, was delivered. And the Baihetan hydropower station went into full operation… None of these achievements would have been possible without the sweat and toil of the numerous Chinese people. Sparks of talent are coming together, and they are the strength of China!” he said.

“Today’s China is a country brimming with vigor and vitality. Various pilot free trade zones and the Hainan Free Trade Port are booming, innovations are gushing out in the coastal areas, development is picking up pace in the central and western regions, the momentum for revitalization is building in the northeast, and there is greater development and affluence in the border regions. The Chinese economy enjoys strong resilience, tremendous potential and great vitality. The fundamentals sustaining its long-term growth have remained strong. As long as we stay confident and strive for progress while maintaining stability, we will realize the goals we have set. On my visit to Hong Kong earlier this year, I was deeply glad to see that Hong Kong has restored order and is set to thrive again. With determined implementation of One Country, Two Systems, Hong Kong and Macao will surely enjoy long-term prosperity and stability,” he said.

“Today’s China is a country that keeps to its national character. In the course of 2022, we encountered various natural disasters including earthquakes, floods, droughts and wildfires, and experienced some workplace accidents. Amid those disconcerting and heartbreaking scenes, there have emerged numerous touching stories of people sticking together in face of adversity or even sacrificing their lives to help others in distress. Those heroic deeds will be forever etched in our memories. At every turn of the year, we always think of the great character of resilience that the Chinese nation has carried forward through millennia. It gives us still greater confidence as we continue our way forward,” he said.

“Today’s China is a country closely linked with the world. Over the past year, I have hosted quite a few friends, both old and new, in Beijing; I have also traveled abroad to communicate China’s propositions to the world. Changes unseen in a century are unfolding at a faster pace, and the world is not yet a tranquil place. We cherish peace and development and value friends and partners as we have always done. We stand firm on the right side of history and on the side of human progress. We work hard to contribute China’s wisdom and solutions to the cause of peace and development for all humanity,” he said.

CGTN: Vitality under COVID-19: China’s smart ports aid increased throughput

BEIJING, Dec. 29, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — China’s Qingdao Port, a subsidiary of Shandong Port Group and the second-largest foreign trade port in east China’s Shandong Province, has seen an increase in anchorage rotations of very large container ships, according to China Media Group.

The port has handled ultra-large container ships more than 300 times. Ultra-large container ships are usually 400 meters long and have a capacity of over 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).

The port has also handled 200-meter-long container ships more than 3,900 times, a 7-percent increase year on year, CMG said.

Handling that much freight under the impact of COVID-19 is challenging, particularly with reduced labor. However, the unloading rate at the Qingdao Port increased by 16 percent from January to November, thanks to the port’s record-setting intelligent system.

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted the global port and water transportation industry. However, China’s major ports have seen an increase in throughput and made significant progress in digital and intelligent construction, thereby playing a leading role in the intelligent development of ports globally.

Qingdao Port is the world’s first to have an air-track intelligent transporting system capable of handling 1.5 million TEUs annually. The system set a new world record in June for managing as many as 67.76 TEUs in an hour, with an average of 60.18 TEUs per hour, a 14.2-percent jump from its previous record.

China now leads the world in the number of automated terminals, both built and under construction, according to the Ministry of Transport. All the major ports in Shanghai and Tianjin are equipped with automated bridge cranes or tracks.

Coupled with the continuous investment in domestic ports and a large number of high-tech enterprises, the concept and practice of smart port construction have been innovative, Mi Weijian, a professor at Shanghai Maritime University, told Xinhua.

For large corporate ports, such as the Shandong Port Science and Technology Group, in-house cooperation is the key to upgrading existing facilities into a fully automated waterfront container terminal, which helps reduce the overall costs by 70 percent compared with newly built terminals, according to Xinhua.

“Now we have traditional terminals, semi-automatic terminals and fully automatic terminals,” said Wang Yusheng, deputy general manager of the group. “The loading and unloading of a ship can be done in three different kinds of terminals, which maximizes the integration of terminal resources.

CGTN: Vitality under COVID-19: China gears up for medical supplies

BEIJING, Dec. 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — China has made efforts to ensure the medical supplies needed for COVID-19 prevention and control after it loosened its epidemic measures in early December, which was followed by an increase in infections and surging demand for medicines.

The country’s National Medical Products Administration has urged medical regulatory authorities at all levels to adopt various enhanced measures, such as sending personnel to factories for inspections and strengthening quality sampling inspections, to safeguard medical supplies needed, such as therapeutic medicines, testing reagents, vaccines, medical masks and protective suits.

Pharmaceutical enterprises have also striven to secure supply.

East China’s Shandong Province is the largest production base of raw materials for antipyretic analgesic medicines in the country. Many companies in the province focus on export markets, but quickly adjusted their distribution channels and increased production capacity in order to secure domestic supplies.

Local government departments have also helped companies to access to raw materials and transportation to ensure the stability of the industrial supply chain for key products. Raw materials and preparations have been produced at full capacity, Zhang Haibo, director at the Department of Industry and Information Technology in Shandong Province, told China Media Group.

Zhang said that they would also coordinate between production enterprises, medical institutions and commercial circulation among others, and organize the delivery of medicines to improve the accessibility to medicines for the people.

Pharmaceutical companies across the country have also adopted measures, such as technological transformations and new production lines, to expand production capacity and meet market demand.

Tan Guanghua, general manager at Pharmaceutical Business Department of Guangzhou Xiangxue Pharmaceutical Co., LTD. in south China’s Guangdong Province, said that they have opened two new production lines to produce Chinese patent medicines and increase daily production capacity by about 50 percent.

For antigen detection reagents, Zhou Jian, deputy general of the consumer product industry department at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said at a press conference on December 14 that all 42 manufacturers have been included in a government white list and were required to procure and store key materials to ensure sufficient supply of the reagents.

Zhou said the country’s vaccine could also meet the needs of the current epidemic prevention and control, since China has built the world’s largest production line of COVID-19 vaccine, with an annual capacity of more than 7 billion doses and an output of over 5.5 billion doses.

In response to the rising demand for N95 masks, the country has improved its production, according to Zhou.

Medical services provided by hospitals and clinics

Multiple makeshift fever clinics have been set up at the grassroots level in cities in east China’s Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, central Henan Province and southern Guangdong Province to provide timely treatment for people with COVID-19 symptoms.

Doctors in the makeshift clinics would diagnose patients and prescribe drugs, making it convenient for locals in urgent need of medical services.

In southwest China’s Guizhou Province, some community clinics have opened online consulting services which support medicine prescription and delivery. Some medical institutions have set up special treatment channels for vulnerable groups of people such as the elderly, the pregnant and infants.

Shanghai has expanded the capacity of fever clinics in community health service centers, branch centers and village clinics to receive the increasing numbers of patients.

China has a three-tier system to grade hospitals, with primary, secondary and tertiary hospitals. Primary and secondary hospitals usually receive patients from certain communities and districts. In Shanghai, these two levels of hospitals so far have responded to 60 percent of the whole treatment requirements.

Tertiary hospitals have the largest number of beds and provide comprehensive medical services and are at the top of the list. Many tertiary hospitals in Shanghai have enlarged their ICU capacity and increased their medicine inventories.

Beijing Municipality urged its tertiary hospitals to play a role in medical treatment, give full play to expert teams, and provide specific treatment for critically ill patients who are affected by the novel coronavirus in accordance with their cases, and make every effort to raise the cure rate and reduce the mortality rate, according to a spokesperson at a press conference held in Beijing on Saturday.

Dialogue eyes key role of youth in RCEP region’s growth

BEIJING, Dec. 24, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The following article was published today by China Daily.

Investing in and empowering young people is vital for members of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership free trade pact to shore up sustained growth and accelerate global economic recovery amid the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic, leading scholars and media executives said.

They made the call on Friday at the high-end RCEP Youth Dialogue themed “Pooling the strength of youth, promoting regional development”.

The dialogue, co-organized by China Daily, the China Institute for Reform and Development and China Oceanic Development Foundation, focused on the RCEP — a 15-nation free trade pact which was officially enacted on Jan 1.

The RCEP consists of all 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, as well as China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

The grouping accounts for around 30 percent of the world’s total population, economic output and trade.

Since taking effect this year, the RCEP has manifested enormous dynamism and huge potential for future development, speakers told the opening ceremony of the forum.

Qu Yingpu, publisher and editor-in-chief of China Daily, said, “The world economy has been struggling to recover in the face of multiple impacts. The prospects for the world economy next year remain far from rosy.”

As the free trade pact covering the largest population and size of economy and trade in the world in comparison with other pacts, the RCEP is “definitely going to further play its role as a stabilizer and a driver of the global economy”, he said.

In the first 10 months of this year, China’s total trade with the other 14 member states of the RCEP increased by 8.4 percent year-on-year, he noted.

“The RCEP substantially boosts the scale, quality and depth of regional economic integration, and it plays an important role in advancing the economic recovery, peace and stability of the entire region as well as the whole world, and boosting the well-being of the people,” Qu said.

In his speech, Qu called on young people in the RCEP member countries to pool their wisdom and create an enabling environment for the region’s development, boost mutual understanding among people in RCEP member states, and advance openness, cooperation and mutual benefit in the region.

Lyu Bin, president of China Oceanic Development Foundation, noted that the Asia-Pacific has become one of the most economically dynamic regions in the world, and it boasts a high level of trade liberalization.

“Over the past 100 to 200 years, the pivot of the global economy and trade was in Europe and North America. The founding of the RCEP symbolizes that the world economy is starting to shift its pivot to the Asia-Pacific region,” he said.

RCEP members now face opportunities brought by the free trade pact as well as unprecedented difficulties and challenges, he said.

The challenges include the lingering Ukraine crisis, the rocky future of global trade, dire problems in food and energy security and a possible stagnation of the world economy, he said.

“Effectively tapping into the opportunities for growth brought by the RCEP will surely further activate the potential for collaboration in various domains and make businesses in various countries better share the opportunities for development brought by the vast market,” he added.

According to a recent survey conducted by China Daily’s Generation Z Research Center, which polled 500 young people from 40 countries and regions worldwide, 90 percent of the respondents said they perceive the RCEP as “very important” or “fairly important”.

The respondents said they expect the RCEP to benefit international trade cooperation and development, and they believe that the implementation of the RCEP will also benefit young people.

Chi Fulin, president of China Institute for Reform and Development, noted that the total population of those aged 15 to 44 among RCEP member countries was 920 million last year, and the number will rise to 940 million in 2030.

“Amid the severe impact of the pandemic on the global economy and the upsurge of unilateralism and protectionism, joint building of the largest free trade zone in the world requires dedication and a sense of duty among young people in the region as well as efforts to inspire the their dynamism, creativity and influence,” Chi said.

He urged the RCEP to create a more open and inclusive environment for the development of young people, boost young people’s access to the digital economy, unlock the huge potential of the youth human resources and facilitate their entrepreneurship, employment and pursuit for vocational skills.

Chi also called for building more platforms such as advisory boards to help young business leaders engage in economic and trade governance and advancing cultural exchange programs.

Smart Machine Vision Comes to the Edge, With Close to 200 Million Cameras to be Deployed by 2027

Smart machine vision is on the job in factories, warehouses, and shipping centers, and ripe for development in smart cities, smart healthcare, and smart transportation

NEW YORK, Dec. 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Machine Vision (MV) uses technology that enables industrial machines to “see” and analyze tasks and make rapid decisions based on what the system sees. MV is fast becoming one of the most central technologies in automation. Given that now this technology is merging with Machine Learning (ML) to lead the transition to Industry 4.0, the possibilities are enormous, especially at the edge. According to global technology intelligence firm ABI Research, forecasts that by 2027, total shipments of camera systems will reach 197 million, with revenue of US$35 billion.

“The shift from machines that can automate simple tasks to autonomous machines that can “see” to optimize elements for extended periods will drive new levels of industrial innovation. This is the innovation that ML offers to MV (also often known as computer vision). ML can augment classic machine vision algorithms by employing the range and reach of neural network models, thus expanding machine vision far beyond visual inspection and quality control, the locus classicus of good, old-fashioned computer vision,” explains David Lobina, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Analyst at ABI Research.

Of all the trends in the ML market, at the edge of computing has the most exciting applications and benefits – namely, in those devices that are part of embedded systems and the Internet of Things. Smart manufacturing is perhaps the most straightforward case, where smart cameras, embedded sensors, and powerful computers can bring ML analyses to every process step. Smart machine vision is on the job in factories, warehouses, and shipping centers, aiding and assisting human workers by handling the more mundane tasks, freeing up workers to use their expertise to focus on the essential parts. The market is also ripe for development in smart cities, smart healthcare, and smart transportation, with ATOS (in cities), Arcturus (in healthcare), and Netradyne (in transportation) as some of the key vendors in these sectors.

As in other cases of edge ML applications, the best way for the technology to advance is through a combination of hardware and software solutions and employing information-rich data. It is through a holistic approach of how all these factors can merge and combine that will achieve fruitful results. Vendors are aware that they need to provide a competitive product. In cases involving sensitive or private data, for instance, as in healthcare, a whole package should provide hardware (cameras, chips, etc.), software, and a good way to analyze the data. The “whole package” approach is perhaps not the most common example in the market, but vendors must be increasingly aware of how their offerings can mesh with other solutions, which will often require providing hardware-agnostic software as well as software-agnostic data analysis. “This is a crucial point in the case of smart cities, healthcare, and transportation, especially in terms of what machine vision can achieve in all these settings. For edge MV, software and hardware vendors, as well as service providers, will start taking an expansive view of the sector,” Lobina concludes.

These findings are from ABI Research’s Edge ML-Based Machine Vision Software and Services application analysis report. This report is part of the company’s Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning research service, which includes research, data, and ABI Insights. Based on extensive primary interviews, Application Analysis reports present in-depth analysis on key market trends and factors for a specific technology.

Media, think tanks urged to contribute to China-Arab community with shared future

BEIJING, Dec. 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — A news report from China.org.cn on the building of a China-Arab community with a shared future and the responsibilities of media and think tanks:

More than 50 experts and scholars called for media and think tanks to contribute to the building of a China-Arab community with a shared future at an online seminar on Dec. 15.

The seminar was hosted by China International Communications Group (CICG) and jointly organized by its Center for Europe and Africa, China.org.cn, and Egypt’s Bayt Al-Hekma Cultural Group.

An online seminar on the building of a China-Arab community with a shared future and the responsibilities of media and think tanks is held on Dec. 15.
An online seminar on the building of a China-Arab community with a shared future and the responsibilities of media and think tanks is held on Dec. 15.

Gao Anming, vice president of CICG, said via video link that the first China-Arab States Summit and the first China-Gulf Cooperation Council Summit recently held in Riyadh represent an epoch-making milestone in the history of China-Arab relations.

Gao said that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) aligns with the development vision and future plans of many Arab countries. The all-round, multi-tiered and wide-ranging practical cooperation between China and Arab countries has been accelerated and upgraded under the framework of the BRI.

Gao noted that as China-Arab relations enter a new historical stage, the two sides should adopt a higher historical perspective and a broader global vision, further leverage their advantages, map out more precise, efficient and practical paths for media and think tank exchanges and cooperation, build more platforms for cooperation and exchange, and promote mutual visits and dialogue.

Gao urged the two sides to continue to increase the frequency, scale and level of exchanges, strengthen discussions and exchanges on common topics, and make joint contributions to the building of a China-Arab community with a shared future oriented to the new era through close cooperation between media and think tanks.

Ahmed Al-Saeed, CEO of Bayt Al-Hekma Cultural Group, pointed out that China-Arab friendship and cultural exchanges date back to ancient times, with historical relations always being based on mutual respect. As the world is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, it is necessary for China and Arab countries to continue friendship and enhance cooperation. China has set an example for Arab countries to explore their own development path, and China also needs the support of Arab countries, he said.

He added that think tanks and media will play a positive role in the development of China-Arab relations, consolidate mutual trust, and promote the transition from a unipolar stage to a multipolar one in a turbulent world, so as to create a future of unity rather than division.

Wu Sike, former Chinese representative to the League of Arab States and former Chinese special envoy to the Middle East, pointed out that media exchanges are an important way to promote mutual understanding between the peoples of China and Arab countries and an important bond for boosting people-to-people ties.

In the face of profound and complex changes in the international and regional situation, Chinese and Arab media should adhere to the concepts of mutual respect, exchanges and mutual learning, solidarity and mutual assistance, understand and support each other on issues concerning each other’s core interests, strengthen solidarity and cooperation on international and regional issues, practice multilateralism in the true sense, and uphold international fairness and justice and the common interests of developing countries, he said.

Experts at the meeting agreed that over the past years, China-Arab relations have made great progress in various fields, but there remains a certain information deficit. In the process of building a China-Arab community with a shared future oriented to the new era, media and think tanks of the two sides should consciously undertake the mission and responsibility of promoting China-Arab communication and exchanges, and use their respective strengths to advance people-to-people exchanges between China and Arab countries.

They added that media and think tanks should jointly amplify their voices to the outside world, break the distortion and smearing of China-Arab cooperation by the United States and other Western powers, remove the path of dependence on Western studies and the dualistic narrative mode, introduce the real situation of China-Arab cooperation to the world, and give a strong voice for China and the Middle East to the international public, and jointly safeguard the image and interests of developing countries to create a favorable international public opinion environment for China-Arab friendly exchanges and common development.

They concurred that media and think tanks should strengthen exchanges and cooperation, increase mutual visits and dialogue, build more platforms for cooperation and exchanges, and pool and leverage their strength.

Based on the consensus reached among the event’s attendees, Hu Baomin, director of the Center for Europe and Africa, delivered a closing speech for the seminar. He said he hoped that both sides can take the seminar as a new starting point to advance people-to-people exchanges between China and Arab states, and make their due contributions to the building of a China-Arab community with a shared future, the common good of the two peoples, and the future development of China-Arab relations.
