‘People’ chosen as Chinese character of the year

BEIJING, Dec. 30, 2020 — A news report by China.org.cn on China’s Chinese character of the year:

In a recently published list of buzzwords in China, "min", meaning "people," was chosen as the Chinese character of 2020, while "poverty alleviation" was crowned as the Chinese word of the year.

"Min," the people, are the target. Confronted with the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, China responded proactively. Swift screening, targeted prevention and control measures, effective treatment, rapid vaccine development and orderly work resumption –– all these efforts have helped guarantee the health and normal life of the 1.4 billion Chinese people, while giving them confidence and hope.

The character "min" is also closely linked with "poverty alleviation," the word of the year. An old saying, "Wishing all the common people free from hunger and cold," shows that the Chinese people have held a sincere desire for the wellbeing of their fellow countrymen since ancient times. By the end of 2020, China already managed to achieve its goal of eliminating poverty despite the pandemic. With poverty-stricken counties being removed from the list one after another, being "free from hunger and cold" is no longer just a vision. It has now become reality, with no one being left behind.

"Min" implies the endeavor to better fulfill people’s wishes. The first-ever Civil Code since China’s founding will come into force in 2021. The document features many new provisions, such as personality rights, dignity of life and a peaceful private life, all of which reflect the specific demands of the people in the new era, with the aim of better safeguarding their rights through improved legislation. In addition, while formulating the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), the government also solicited opinions and suggestions from the public, with a view to better promoting the people’s interests.

The people are not only the target, but also a source of confidence, representing the power of the people and the spirit of the nation. In the past year, some Chinese people stayed home voluntarily for quarantine purposes; some joined the medical teams or contributed in whatever ways they could. People from all over the country initiated a group-buying campaign, for products made in Hubei, the hardest-hit province in the pandemic. Many chose to leave cities to offer their help in the least developed places, and numerous people living in hardships have been struggling forward. The Chinese people have provided the country with the confidence and conviction to face future challenges.

The people also embody hope for the future. 2021 marks the beginning of China’s "14th Five-Year Plan" period. On the agenda of the recent Central Economic Work Conference, keywords such as "income," "employment," "housing" and "elderly care" were all centered around one common theme: for the people.

The character "min" can be seen as both a target and a source of conviction. In 2021, the Chinese people will stand together to face challenges and embrace the future.

Yuanyuan’s Adventure Episode Ⅱ: The Reclamation of Taiwan

BEIJING, Dec. 30, 2020 — A news report by China.org.cn:

In the late 15th and early 16th centuries, as the world ushered in the Age of Discovery, Taiwan, a beautiful island with rich resources became a target of Western colonial exploitation. A group of pirates from the Netherlands and Spain were particularly active. They set foot on this island and committed all sorts of crimes against its people.

In 1624, the Dutch seized Taiwan, brutally oppressing and exploiting the residents there. It is never too late for justice! Zheng Chenggong, who fought fierce battles against the invaders, successfully reclaimed Taiwan. In many ways, he’s my idol and I really admire him.

In 1661, Zheng Chenggong led the army to Taiwan and launched fierce attacks on the Dutch imperialists. A few months later, the Dutch surrendered, and Taiwan, the Chinese territory which had been colonized for 38 years, was eventually reclaimed.

When the country was facing great difficulties, Zheng, who was commanding a weaker force, dared to challenge the stronger invaders. He also made sure that anyone who attacked China would be dealt with no matter how far away they were. This is exactly what protecting the people and giving them a sense of security is all about! After leading his warriors in a valiant battle to reclaim their homeland, Zheng Chenggong reasserted control over Taiwan and began a massive program to develop the island. Through both its political and military achievements, Taiwan transformed itself from a "punching bag", which was exploited by foreign powers and pirates, to a world-respected maritime trade hub. At the same time, culture, etiquette and education flourished on the island.

Zheng Chenggong not only brought Taiwan under Han Chinese rule for the first time, but also attracted many people from the Chinese mainland to the island. The rule has endured for three generations in Taiwan, and made great contributions to the development of the island. Since then, Taiwan has ushered in a sustained period of prosperity and peace.

History continues its unstoppable march. And yet another sudden change appears on the horizon, but is it a blessing or a curse? Stay tuned for our next episode and I’ll tell you more!

Survey Finds Most U.S. And International Teachers Believe Online Learning Will Continue To Be A Major Component Of K-12 Education In Post-Pandemic Era

Teachers from U.S., China and other countries express need for more support, training; concern that students lack internet access and devices to learn online

WASHINGTON, Dec. 30, 2020 — TEACH-NOW Graduate School of Education, a college at Moreland University, released the results of a survey of teachers in the U.S. and abroad showing that 60% of teachers believe that online education will play a significant role in schools even after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the education system faces major hurdles in remote learning, as the vast majority say their students lack internet access, and that they personally need more training to effectively teach online.

The findings indicate that legislators, policymakers, district leaders and parents need to start preparing for a new era of schooling, and to eliminate the remote learning barriers for teachers and students.

When schools across the nation abruptly closed due to the coronavirus pandemic in March, teachers and students faced significant challenges in remote learning. At the onset of the pandemic, 80% of U.S. public school teachers and 43% of international teachers said that they had students who had poor or no internet access at home. And 71% of U.S. public school teachers and 60% of international teachers said that they were unprepared to teach online.

But the survey indicates that teachers do not expect a return to the past when the COVID-19 pandemic subsides.

"Teachers around the globe know that the world is changing and the education system will need to quickly adapt as well," said Dr. Emily Feistritzer, founder and CEO of TEACH-NOW, which has nearly 1000 students and graduates from China and more than 1200 from across Southeast Asia. "They are way ahead of our elected leaders in recognizing that education five years from now will be delivered very differently than it was before the pandemic struck."

TEACH-NOW surveyed 641 U.S. and international teachers from November 14 to November 30, 2020 on the impact of COVID-19 on their teaching, their biggest challenges, available resources and the future of education. Teachers believe that the technological changes implemented due to remote schooling will continue to evolve and to improve the educational system and teachers want to be part of the future of schooling.

The survey also found that districts and schools need to address teachers’ emotional, social and mental health. An astonishing one-third to 45 percent of teachers wanted "Programs for increasing my well-being" and "Support group of other teachers in my discipline."

Other key findings from the survey:

Districts and schools need to provide more training and professional development opportunities for teachers.
As most public schools are still closed and remote learning remains the primary method of instructional delivery, teachers need more training to teach online.

  • 65% of U.S. public school teachers indicated that they still needed professional development for effective online instruction
  • 61% of international teachers indicated that they still needed professional development for effective online instruction

Districts also need to provide supports for teachers’ emotional, social and mental well-being.
Teachers expressed the need for personal support during this time, particularly in the U.S.

  • 42% of U.S. public school teachers indicated that they needed programs to support their well being
  • 34% of international teachers indicated that they needed programs to support their well being

In spite of a challenging year, teachers remain committed to field of education.

  • Only 7% of US public school teachers and 5% of international teachers expected to be employed in an occupation outside of education in the next five years

TEACH-NOW Teacher Preparation Certificate Program, leading to a state teaching license, began in 2013 with a cohort of 10 students as an affordable, high-quality, worldwide program resulting in a state teaching license in 9 months, TEACH-NOW has grown exponentially, and recently became Moreland University, a comprehensive university offering Masters’ degrees and professional development. Moreland University offers a groundbreaking online learning experience that prepares its students for the real world and the future of education with an activities-based, collaborative learning methodology. Moreland University has over 6,000 students and graduates who are teaching in over 150 countries. For more information, visit https://www.moreland.edu/teachers-matter-survey-findings.

Dr. Emily Feistritzer, founder and CEO of TEACH-NOW, is a lifelong educator and a former nun. She has conducted surveys of teachers throughout her career at the National Center for Education Information, which she founded in 1979 and led until 2012. Dr. Feistritzer was named one of Fast Company’s "Most Creative People 2019" and Inc. magazine’s "2019 Top Ten Groundbreakers."

China Matters tells the story of Ms. Pan and her Mountaintop Guesthouse

BEIJING, Dec. 29, 2020 — As Pan Qingqing sips on a traditional Chinese tea, she glances out the window of her mountaintop guesthouse. The view is splendid with billowing clouds and valleys, and this is swiftly followed by laughter and loud chatter in the guesthouse where she is right in the middle of a jovial conversation with her guests who have made the trip to Xiangjian village in the southern city of Hangzhou.

jwplayer.key=”3Fznr2BGJZtpwZmA+81lm048ks6+0NjLXyDdsO2YkfE=”

jwplayer(‘myplayer1’).setup({file: ‘https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-e-VA6mT1k’, image: ‘http://www.prnasia.com/video_capture/3234410_AE34410_1.jpg’, autostart:’false’, aspectratio: ’16:9′, stretching : ‘fill’, width: ‘600’, height: ‘338’});

The 44-year-old is one of many in Lin’an District to have built guesthouses to attract more visitors from home and abroad. For her, this is an opportunity to bring changes to her hometown. And her plans have been supported by the Hangzhou government.

The key to this change has been to combine the local surroundings with the arts to create something fresh where you wouldn’t expect it. And the guesthouses like Ms. Pan’s brings the two together.

Bigger than life-size installations of bamboo art now decorate the halls. When guests sit down for an afternoon tea and food, cups and cutlery sets made from local bamboo wood don the tables. Ms. Pan has been inviting artistic to come and showcase their mastery.

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing at the start. After studying in France, she finally chose to come back to Lin’an. And even though she left all those years ago as a child, no one could deny how special the place was to her.

But as things would have it, Ms. Pan’s father, an experienced tourism operator, opposed the guesthouse plans. He sighted poor accessibility, small population, and an underdeveloped economy in the area as potential pitfalls. Nevertheless, she saw differently. She wasn’t deterred. She believed in the changes her guesthouse would bring.

And now, she is hosting variety of events throughout the year. Recently, she launched a bamboo art exhibition. The bamboo artist was able to teach local villagers how to weave locally-sourced bamboo artworks. Just recently as October, at the tail-end of local rice harvest season, she gathered young agricultural entrepreneurs to taste the new rice and exchange their products to promoting their hometowns.

So, Xiangjian village is just the tip of the iceberg. It represents this innovative take on how to build tourism in rural Hangzhou. In this video, British host Josh went to visit the guesthouse and see the transformation of villages in Hangzhou through nature and modern arts. The video was filmed and produced by China Matters.

What does the new joint measurement of Mt. Qomolangma mean for China-Nepal relations

BEIJING, Dec. 28, 2020 — A news report by China.org.cn on the joint measurement of Mt. Everest by China and Nepal:

Mount Qomolangma, the world’s tallest mountain, has got a new height. Recently, China and Nepal jointly announced that the mountain’s new height, including the snowcap, is 8,848.86 meters.

This is the most accurate and authoritative measurement to date of the world’s highest point, settling longstanding discrepancies over its exact height. The news made headlines across the world, and is of huge value in terms of scientific research.

As this year marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Nepal, the joint announcement of the new height is of extra significance to both countries.

Located in the Himalayan mountain range, Mount Qomolangma straddles the ChinaNepal border. For hundreds of years, the peak has witnessed friendly exchanges between the two countries. For example, renowned Chinese monks Faxian and Xuanzang traveled to Nepal to worship the Buddha and obtain Buddhist scriptures. Meanwhile, famed Nepalese architect Araniko supervised the construction of the White Dagoba Temple in Beijing.

In 1961, China aided the construction of the Araniko Highway, which stretches across the Himalayas, connecting Kathmandu and the border town of Zhangmu in Tibet autonomous region. The highway has been serving as an important channel for trade and personnel exchanges between China and Nepal. In 2019, the NepalChina joint venture Himalaya Airlines started operating direct flights between Beijing and Kathmandu, marking the first direct capital-to-capital service between the two countries.

The Himalayas, originally a natural barrier between China and Nepal, have been "broken down" by generations of friendly exchanges and practical cooperation, becoming a bond of friendship.

The joint measurement of Mount Qomolangma has also strengthened the emotional connection between China and Nepal. Teams from the two countries overcame difficulties and reached consensus on key issues after repeated discussion and consultation. This process also helped enhance mutual trust as ChinaNepal relations have now been upgraded to a strategic partnership of cooperation.

Currently, Nepal is working hard to promote economic development and improve the lives of its people. Fueled by the Belt and Road Initiative, China and Nepal are developing a Trans-Himalayan Multi-dimensional Connectivity Network and deepening cooperation in business, culture and other fields. Such efforts are in line with the interests of both countries. The joint measurement marks a new milestone in this growing friendship and will help broaden bilateral cooperation on such issues as climate change and environmental protection.
