What is "GUNDAM OPEN INNOVATION"?

"GUNDAM OPEN INNOVATION" is a program to create future dreams and hopes by revisiting the similarities between the real world and the fictional era of GUNDAM, the "Universal Century," and merging "GUNDAM" with "future technologies" to face the social issues that exist in both worlds.

The vast world of GUNDAM is filled with untapped technologies and possibilities that have yet to become reality. Under the concept of bringing creativity, knowledge, and passion together to bring these fictional technologies and possibilities into reality, an open invitation is being extended to the public to gather innovative ideas and technologies under the theme and field of sustainability to face subjects pertaining to a futuristic society, such as population and global environmental issues, along with looking into space as a viable frontier.

An initial invitation for application was announced back in July this year, with the first-phase deadline set on Sunday, August 15, and a second-phase application deadline set on Wednesday, September 15. An overwhelming amount of applications was received, with many requests for an extended deadline. Under the concept of receiving as many ideas as possible, a third-phase deadline has been decided and set for Friday, October 15, with hope of seeing more ideas to come.

During this opportunity, BANDAI NAMCO would like everyone around the world to consider applying. The initiative is open to everyone worldwide as BANDAI NAMCO looks for a brighter place in the future.

"GUNDAM OPEN INNOVATION" interview video by Chief GUNDAM Officer (CGO), Koji Fujiwara, and the directors of the Yokohama "moving GUNDAM"

An interview video is now available to the public, featuring BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Corporate Managing Director and CGO, Koji Fujiwara, who is hosting "GUNDAM OPEN INNOVATION," and the directors behind the "moving GUNDAM" that was built last year in Yokohama: Akinori Ishii, Wataru Yoshizaki (Asratec Corp. Director and Chief Robot Creator), and Masaki Kawahara (NOMURA Co., Ltd. Content Integration Center/NOTORA Creative Director).

In the interview, Yoshizaki mentions that, should he participate in the "GUNDAM OPEN INNOVATION" initiative, he would like to develop a machine that recreates the robotic movements depicted within the GUNDAM series such as Zaku’s dexterous and delicate finger motions.

Fujiwara makes mention that, instead of merely recreating the scenes from the GUNDAM brand, he would like to focus on matters that can lead to causes of good, while finding solutions to societal issues under the main objective of "GUNDAM OPEN INNOVATION," which is to incorporate the charm of the GUNDAM brand so that its initiatives can spread throughout the world.

The interview also brings up what the future of GUNDAM holds and how BANDAI NAMCO pushed out the GUNDAM brand in the form of products and services. Fujiwara mentions that, by communicating with GUNDAM fans, he would like to grow GUNDAM from being an IP (Intellectual Property) into an SP (Social Property), an iconic figure for society.

PYEONGTAEK, South Korea, Sept. 23, 2021 — Following announcement covered by The Korea Herald, Pyeongtaek City will host the 2021 Pyeongtaek Global Peace and Security Forum from September 27 to 28 in Seoul, South Korea.

Under the slogan of "Opening A New Chapter of Peace And Security," the forum will take place in a hybrid format according to the COVID-19 quarantine guidelines – a minimum number of on-site participants invited or pre-registered are expected to attend the forum, and those who do not can view the discussions live-streamed on Arirang TV’s YouTube channel.

Pyeongtaek City minimizes the number of on-site guests as well. Only a few figures are expected to appear at the forum to deliver their congratulatory messages. They include Pyeongtaek Mayor Jeong Jang-sun, Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong, Chairman of Pyeongtaek City Council Hong Sun-eui, and National Assembly members Yu Eui-dong and Hong Kee-won.

Song Min-soon, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, will also attend the forum to make his keynote speech about the "Peace Process in Northeast Asia and the Korea-U.S. Alliance." Vincent Keith Brooks, former U.S. military commander, will give a special address online in real-time.

Pyeongtaek City said that this peace and security forum, the first of its kind, will create an opportunity to discuss measures to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula. With this goal, Jung Seung-jo, President of Korea-US Alliance Foundation (KUSAF), and Jeon In-beom, former South Korean Army Lieutenant General, will preside the two main sessions: "The Changing Role of the United States Forces Korea (USFK) According to the Korea-U.S. Alliance and Northeast Asian Security Environment" and "The Role of Pyeongtaek City for the Evolved Korea-U.S. Alliance in Pyeongtaek," respectively.

Since all sessions will be live-streamed on YouTube, those who want to participate in the forum from home and abroad can join the Q&A session and interactively communicate with the speakers in real-time through the video conferencing system.

Mayor Jeong Jang-sun said, "As the central city of the Korea-U.S. alliance, Pyeongtaek is making every effort to discover and lead the role of local governments in the diplomatic and security sectors by holding the Global Peace and Security Forum." He added, "The city will make thorough preparations for the forum to make it safe amid the unprecedented situation of the COVID-19 pandemic."

Xinhua Silk Road: Annual report on image of Suzhou city released to better tell Suzhou stories during 2021 AI Expo Thu.

BEIJING, Sept. 18, 2021 — To better tell stories of Suzhou, an east China-located city known for its classic Chinese gardens, an annual report on image of Suzhou city in global cyberspace (2020-2021) came to the public during the 2021 Global AI Product & Application Expo (2021 AI Expo) on Thursday.

The report was released by the Jiangsu Center of Xinhua-run China Economic Information Service (CEIS) on the expo’s future of smart media-themed sub-forum. It probes into the characteristics, effectiveness and shortcomings of Suzhou’s city image building via internet channels in the past year.

Chen Xixi, head of Jiangsu Center of CEIS releases the annual report on Thursday.
Chen Xixi, head of Jiangsu Center of CEIS releases the annual report on Thursday.

Suzhou, as one of the major cities in the Yangtze River Delta, boasts a unique city image thanks to its world-class traditional culture and rich aquatic resources, complete and diversified manufacturing industry chain, and advantages in piloting preferential and opening-up policies by national level local economic platforms, according to the report.

Different from other Chinese cities, Suzhou appeared in reports by global media with four typical characteristics.

For instance, the city was usually reported along with such hot words as the "digital city", "ancient Chinese gardens", and words related to urban construction, culture, and tourism of Suzhou.

Moreover, Suzhou mainly appeared in reports by global mainstream media, which are mostly neutral in stance, in topics regarding its ecological environment, science and technology progresses, and development of emerging industries.

Furthermore, the city caught more attention from traditional media such as magazines, news agencies and commercial news websites and new media as compared with social media where reports about Suzhou are relatively scarce.

YouTube turned out a more interactive and influential platform for the city to communicate with the world as it is easy for influencer campaigns to produce widely-focused livestreaming shows about Suzhou, and the audiovisual language and topics concerned are easy to understand and closer to daily life.

All of these resulted from Suzhou’s continuous efforts in city image building in recent years, which highlighted its international communication with more cultural factors and established an all-round and multidimentional communication mode.

To better tell Suzhou stories, the report suggests the city deepening cognition of its city image and exploring more value of its connotation.

CGTN: China calls for solidarity among SCO members as the bloc turns 20

BEIJING, Sept. 18, 2021China on Friday called on member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to strengthen solidarity and cooperation and build a closer SCO community with a shared future.

Noting that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the SCO’s founding, Chinese President Xi Jinping reviewed the history of SCO cooperation and made proposals for its future development at the 21st meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO. The summit was held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, which is holding the rotating SCO presidency in 2021.

Addressing the summit in Beijing via video link, Xi called on SCO member states to enhance collaboration on Afghanistan-related issues and promote a smooth transition in the country.

The SCO will launch procedures to admit Iran as a member state and Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Qatar as new dialogue partners on Friday, said the Chinese president.

Efforts to build ‘new type of international relations’

The creation of the SCO was announced on June 15, 2001, in Shanghai by Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russian, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan joined the bloc in 2017, bringing the number of member states to eight.

President Xi hailed the "vigorous growth" of the SCO and the "fruitful, mutually beneficial cooperation" among its member states during the past two decades.

"Guided by the Shanghai Spirit of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for diversity of civilizations and pursuit of common development, the SCO has endeavored to promote world peace, development and human progress, and to explore new ground, both theoretically and with actual steps, with a view to building a new type of international relations and a community with a shared future for mankind," the Chinese president said.

SCO member states have jointly promoted political mutual trust, ensured security and stability, pursued prosperity and development, and upheld international justice, he added.

"We were the first to call for fighting terrorism, separatism and extremism," Xi said, underscoring cooperation among SCO members states in curbing the spread of drug trafficking and holding counter-terrorism exercises and border control operations.

‘Closer SCO community with a shared future’

The SCO has reached a "new historical starting point" after 20 years of development, President Xi said, calling for efforts to "build a closer SCO community with a shared future" and make further contributions to lasting global peace and common prosperity.

The organization should stay committed to enhancing solidarity and cooperation, upholding common security, promoting openness and integration, boosting interactions and mutual learning, and upholding equity and justice, he said.

The Chinese president called on SCO member states to enhance policy dialogue, communication and coordination and respect each other’s legitimate concerns in their cooperation so as to keep the organization "on a steady course of development."

"We should maintain firm confidence in our systems, reject condescending lecturing, and firmly support countries in exploring development paths and governance models that are compatible with their national conditions," he said. "We should keep the future of our countries’ development and progress firmly in our own hands."

‘Most pressing task’

Stressing that the fight against COVID-19 remains the "most pressing task," President Xi called for joint efforts among the member states to deepen cooperation against the pandemic, promote fair and equitable distribution of vaccines and firmly oppose any act of politicizing COVID-19 origins tracing.

China has provided approximately 1.2 billion doses of finished and bulk vaccines to over 100 countries and international organizations, he said, adding that China will step up efforts to provide a total of two billion doses to other countries this year.

To facilitate post-COVID economic recovery in the region, China will strive to reach $2.3 trillion in its cumulative trade with other SCO countries in the next five years, Xi said.

China will also provide 1,000 training opportunities in poverty alleviation for other SCO countries in the next three years, he announced.

SCO cooperation on Afghanistan

President Xi called for tough actions from SCO member states to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism, including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM).

Commenting on the "daunting challenges" faced by Afghanistan after the withdrawal of foreign troops, he called on SCO member states to make full use of platforms such as the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group and facilitate a smooth transition in the country.

"We need to encourage Afghanistan to put in place a broad-based and inclusive political framework, adopt prudent and moderate domestic and foreign policies, resolutely fight all forms of terrorism, live in amity with its neighbors and truly embark on a path of peace, stability and development," he stressed.

The Afghan Taliban took control of Kabul on August 15 and announced the formation of a caretaker government earlier this month. China has urged the Taliban to make a clean break with all terrorist organizations, including the ETIM, and resolutely fight against them. The Taliban have pledged not to allow Afghan territory to be used "against anybody or any country in the world."

‘Defenders of international order’

President Xi highlighted the SCO’s role in upholding equity and justice in the world. "Acting from a so-called ‘position of strength’ is not the way to handle international affairs, and hegemonic, domineering and bullying acts should be firmly rejected," he said.

"We need to practice true multilateralism and oppose actions that use the name of the so-called rules to undermine the international order and cause confrontation and division," he added.

As the SCO launches procedures to admit Iran as a member state and Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Qatar as new dialogue partners, Xi expressed confidence that the "growing SCO family" will play roles as the "builders of world peace, contributors to global development and defenders of the international order."

CGTN: China calls for innovation to promote high-quality development in Shaanxi

BEIJING, Sept. 16, 2021 — Innovation is often regarded as a pressing task in China, and to facilitate the high-quality development in all-round areas, efforts must be made in this regard.

The message was well emphasized during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s two-day inspection tour of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, where he highlighted about innovation and high-quality development in energy, ecological conservation, education and people’s livelihood.

Innovation, the most pressing task

Sci-tech innovation is the most pressing task and efforts must be accelerated to achieve breakthroughs in key and core technologies, Xi stressed during Monday’s visit to a chemical company to learn about the consumption and development of China’s coal industry.

The coal chemical industry, as a sector with huge potential and good prospects, must be transformed into a high-end, diversified and low-carbon industry, Xi said.

Coal is so far the primary energy consumption in China. Given the situation, Xi said a green and low-carbon development path for the industry is essential to the country’s mission to realize carbon neutrality by 2060. He emphasized the importance of sci-tech innovation to transform the traditional industry into a high-end, diversified and low-carbon one.

Ecological conservation, a balance between humans and nature

The Loess Plateau, once famous for its endless highlands of yellow earth from land erosion on the banks of Yellow River, now has been changing colors with local people’s tireless afforestation efforts.

Among them, Gaoxigou Village is known as a model of ecological conservation. During his trip to the village, Xi affirmed villagers’ efforts while stressing the need to integrate ecological governance with the development of distinctive local businesses.

We must firmly implement the concept of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets" and explore a way to attain coordinated development between ecology and economy, and harmony between humans and nature, the Chinese president said.

Education, fundamental to national rejuvenation

Xi gave further explanation to the fundamental role of education when paying a visit to a middle school in Suide on Tuesday.

According to him, the aim of education is to improve people’s overall quality so as to raise the national degree of social civilization, achieve cultural confidence and enhance the national creative vitality.

He stressed the importance of reform in the education sector and called for efforts to cultivate young people who are equipped with moral grounding, intellectual and physical ability, and aesthetic sensibility that can contribute to the society.

Meanwhile, the Chinese president also urged to strengthen the primary role of schools in education, noting that the quality of education should be improved in an all-round way while easing students’ burden of excessive homework and off-campus tutoring.

Folk arts, an invaluable asset of the Chinese nation

While touring an exhibition hall for local intangible cultural heritage in Suide, Xi expressed appreciation for the local efforts to protect and inherit traditional culture.

Noting that Suide is one of the important origins of the Loess Culture, with abundant resources of intangible cultural heritage and traditional folk arts, Xi highlighted the importance of protecting folk arts as they are invaluable assets of the Chinese nation, and are vital to sustaining historical legacy and building a socialist country with great cultural strength.

He called for a creative transformation and development of the traditional culture so as to better link it to modern life to meet people’s ever-growing needs for a better life.

CGTN: China leads global vaccine cooperation as BRICS enters the 15th year

BEIJING, Sept. 11, 2021 — Entering its 15th year, the emerging-market bloc BRICS that groups Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa once again demonstrated that the member states can always come together to build up new consensus for more dynamic cooperation.

Under the theme of "Intra-BRICS cooperation for continuity, consolidation and consensus," the 13th summit via video link on Thursday comes at a time when the world is facing a pandemic, an increasingly uneven global economic recovery, as well as a torrent of rising non-conventional global security challenges.

China, which has continued to inject impetus into BRICS cooperation and will take over the BRICS chairmanship in 2022, set a good example for international vaccine cooperation at Thursday’s summit by announcing to donate 100 million more COVID-19 vaccines to developing countries.

BRICS to fight against the pandemic

In the face of the pandemic, BRICS countries have actively maintained information exchange and cooperation and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who attended and delivered a speech at the BRICS summit for the ninth consecutive year, restressed the significance of vaccine cooperation.

Noting that China has promised to provide 2 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses to the world throughout this year and offer $100 million to COVAX, Xi called on the BRICS members to contribute to promoting fair and equitable distribution of vaccines worldwide.

Since Xi announced making China’s COVID-19 vaccines a public good at the 73rd session of the World Health Assembly last May, the country has delivered about 800 million vaccine doses to more than 100 nations as of August. They are mostly developing countries, according to data from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

He also highlighted the practical cooperation in joint vaccine research and development, joint production and mutual recognition of COVID-19 vaccinations, as well as launching the BRICS Vaccine Research and Development Center online as soon as possible.

In May, China announced the establishment of a national center as part of the center. Boosting the vaccine R&D among BRICS nations, the center reinforces cooperation on R&D and the trial of the vaccines, factory construction, and cooperation on vaccine production, authorization and recognition among the five countries.

BRICS to promote common development in economy

Economic and trade cooperation is one of the major topics for BRICS countries. According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, BRICS countries account for 42 percent of the world’s population, 24 percent of the global economy, 18 percent of global trade in goods, 13 percent of global trade in services and 25 percent of global foreign investment.

In this regard, China proposed to host a high-level BRICS meeting on climate change and a BRICS forum on big data for sustainable development.

Xi also stressed the significance of the New Development Bank and the BRICS Partnership on the New Industrial Revolution innovation center.

The center was launched in Xiamen in December last year. At the center’s inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, 28 projects with a total investment of over 13.4 billion yuan (about 2.07 billion U.S. dollars) were inked by BRICS enterprises.

BRICS to uphold true multilateralism, justice and fairness

Regional peace and stability, biosecurity and counter-terrorism and cyber security have also been the keywords in BRICS cooperation during recent years.

"We need to make good use of BRICS mechanisms such as the meeting of foreign ministers and the meeting of high representatives for security, better coordinate our position on major international and regional issues, and send out an even bigger, collective voice of BRICS countries," Xi said at the summit.

At the BRICS Meeting of National Security Advisors held last month, the member countries reached the counter-terrorism action plan, and in July, they agreed to contribute more to the international fight against terrorism at the 6th virtual meeting of the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group.

A declaration was adopted at the meeting, reiterating the BRICS commitment to enhancing cooperation under political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

China.org.cn: Regulating algorithms to protect your interests

BEIJING, Sept. 10, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on China’s recent draft regulations on algorithm recommendation:

Here are some scenarios that most people are familiar with: Searching for products on a shopping app leads to relevant ads "magically appearing" on your social media. Or when watching short videos on your phone, you may find that they are just to your taste and you just cannot stop.

The recommendation algorithms that can "read your mind" actually expose acute problems such as privacy leaks and data security. In response, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) released the draft Regulations on the Management of Internet Information Service Recommendation Algorithms to solicit opinions from the public. The regulations include 30 points, covering rules such as those to protect minors and provide users the option to turn off recommendation services.

Nowadays, science and technology provides people with an unprecedented wealth of information and experiences. However, its unchecked and chaotic development could cause great harm. A majority of recommendations are harmless enough. But people often hear news about teenagers, who lack a mature worldview and outlook on life and values, getting injured while imitating what they see in popular short videos. If content containing smoking and drinking, violence, and distorted values are repeatedly recommended, then copied by minors, it will also result in particularly adverse consequences.

Interest-based recommendation algorithms can easily lead to users being "cocooned" and limiting their access to other information. Therefore, it’s vital to give users more choice. Lots of recommendation algorithms can induce users with a variety of content in diverse forms, ranging from product advertisements to material influencing people’s political opinions. For instance, Facebook and Google were previously accused of intensifying political polarization. If algorithms are used for improper competition, what people see and think will become presumptions of the "manipulators", which runs counter to the ideals of fairness and justice.

Nowadays, information and data security affect every aspect of everyday lives and are essential to everyone. Thus, it’s imperative that these algorithms are regulated, as is the case in every other country. On Sept. 1, the Data Security Law officially came into effect in China, aiming to better safeguard data security as well as the legal rights and interests of citizens and organizations.

In the internet age, privacy and data security issues know no borders, and so China has taken steps to explore the protection of data security. There are enough reasons to believe that a safer and more objective cyberspace can be created through the consultation and cooperation between China and the rest of the world.

Joy Spreader’s Revenue Surges to Reach over HK$600 Million for H1 2021

E-commerce Business, Private Traffic and Data Algorithm Platform Are the Key Drivers of Joy Spreader’s Next Stage of Growth

BEIJING, Sept. 6, 2021 — Joy Spreader Group Inc. (HKG: 6988, "the Group", "Joy Spreader"), a leading marketing technology company focused on serving the mobile new media-based consumption market and the mobile internet sector in which traffic can be monetized, on August 30 released its interim financial report for the first six months ended June 30, 2021. According to the report, the Group plans to focus on three areas as part of its strategy for the near future:

1) expand the e-commerce business outside of China to increase private traffic across multiple channels;

2) further optimize data algorithms;

3) further increase investment in research and development (R&D).

According to lately published 48th Statistical Report on Internet Development in China, released by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), as of June 2021, the number of mobile internet users in China had reached over 1 billion. Online shopping has evolved into the most common way to place order of goods and services, while young and middle-aged users now form the core of the country’s consumer groups.

In line with an overall shift to a digital economy in tandem with higher expectations among consumers when it comes to the quality of the products and services they purchase, the e-commerce market has been experiencing a boom with an increased focus on marketing products via mobile new media platforms.

With internet-based platforms providing more business opportunities to partners, mobile new media performance-based marketing service providers expect to further broaden their traffic coverage. To capitalize on the opportunities, Joy Spreader plans to build a network of premium locations for product placement on various new media platforms alongside the creation of private traffic content by leveraging its advantages in data algorithms as well as through strategic alliances, investments and incubation projects. The aim is to provide traffic support to the mobile new media performance-based marketing business, including the e-commerce and interactive entertainment components while further reducing per unit marketing costs.

The firm plans to launch an e-commerce marketing service first in Southeast Asia, followed by the anticipated expansion of the service into other countries and regions worldwide, in addition to continuing the expansion of its e-commerce marketing business on international e-commerce platforms, starting with the immensely popular TikTok platform.

Joy Spreader delivered outstanding performance in terms of key business indicators during the first half of the year. In response to new trends sweeping the online world, the Group has aggressively expanded into new markets and is highly confident in the future prospects of the company based on its three growth engines: the e-commerce business, private traffic and the data algorithm platform.
