Their showcase at Auto Shanghai 2023, showcased their prowess and dedication to NEVs. Having only recently announced their commitment to new energy vehicles with their nine-in-nine strategy, the showcase at Auto Shanghai 2023, reinforced their commitment with the launch of fifteen new energy vehicles which advances Great Wall Motor’s mission. These vehicles also cover a wide range of segments from pickups to SUVs to plug-in electric hybrid vehicles (PHEVs).

At the show, GWM HAVAL introduced an all-new star product lineup. The hallmark of the showcase was the new energy SUV from GWM HAVAL dubbed the Fierce Dragon MAX in the Chinese market. It boasts the revolutionary Hi4 (Hybrid Intelligent 4WD) technology. The Fierce Dragon MAX features what GWM calls a youthful, futuristic design. Together with this, GWM also launched a new pickup; a 6×6 version of the GWM POER alongside their hybrid pickup – the POER Shanhai PHEV/HEV. The latter further enforces GWM’s commitment to developing new energy pickup solutions.

Two new NEVs were also showcased by GWM TANK at the exhibition. THE TANK400 PHEV made its world debut while the luxury off-road new energy SUV TANK500 went on worldwide pre-sale. On the high-end intelligent NEV side of things, GWM showcased its luxury MPV model – the GWM WEY Gaoshan PHEV. This first was complemented by the six-seater electric PHEV SUV, the GWM WEY Lanshan. BMW Motorrad Wants to Go Electric with the BMW CE 04

If you have a dream bike, you might be looking at bikes from a handful of brands. You have Ducati, Harley Davidson, Triumph, and the likes. Then there is one from Germany; you have BMW Motorrad.

The Bavarian automotive giant has been one of the leading brands in motorcycles forever. They are right up there with the likes of Ducati and Triumph. At this point, they are also the maker of one of the most powerful production motorcycles in the world, the BMW S 1000 RR superbike.

They are not all about making fast bikes though. They make some of the most practical motorcycles for all kinds of purposes. What they did not make before is a scooter, until now. This one is special though.

We start with what you might ask about with electric vehicles; how far does this go? The BMW CE 04 packs an 8.9kWh battery, not your regular laptop battery capacity. That battery offers up to 130km in range from a single charge. It is a lithium-ion battery that can be charged via a regular wall socket you have at home or a quick charging port for cars. Through regular wall sockets (2.3Kw output), you get a full charge in just four hours and 20 minutes. If you can get it to a quick charger at 6.9kW you cut the charging time by 40 minutes.

Power? It is a single liquid cooled magnetic electric motor powering the rear wheels on this one. The motor drives the wheels via a single-gear toothed belt transmission. That transmission puts 31kW on the wheels and then to the road and 62Nm of torque available immediately when you throttle the motorcycle. With that kind of power, you can bring the electric motorcycle to 180 km/h at the top, faster than some fully electric cars even. To make sure that it stops properly, the BMW CE 04 gets twin disc brakes.

All these techs are wrapped in a body unlike any BMW motorbike. To be fair, it looks like a rather bulky urban scooter. Underneath the pretty panels are tubular steel frame to ensure that the motorbike is rigid enough to handle the hustles and bustles of city travels. The modern design also allows the CE 04 to have a “floating” seat look.

Up front is a telescoping fork attached to the front wheel. Out the back is a single sided swing arm with fully covered spring strut. Riding in the dark should prove no problem too with BMW’s LED Adaptive Headlight Pro in the headlamp for both high and low beams. Alongside daytime running lights, the headlamp also offers special light functions for “welcome and “goodbye”.

The BMW CE 04 also comes with four riding modes. You choose between “ECO”, “Rain”, “Road”, and “Dynamic” for optimized rides in any situation you might put the bike in. All of these can be accessed via a modern looking 10.25-inch TFT colour display with Integrated Map Navigation. If you have BMW Motorrad’s Connected App, you can even check the CE 04’s status and even ride statistics.

 Availability

BMW has not announced its official availability in Malaysia just yet. The preview means that BMW is planning to bring the CE 04 into the country soon though. They have not announced any pricing too at this time. All we can do is wait for BMW Motorrad to make the announcement later in the year.

GWM Malaysia Launches the ORA GOOD CAT – Another EV for Malaysian Roads

EVs in Malaysia is not necessarily a new idea. Industry players like BMW was keen in introducing their i3 and even i8 models into Malaysia. To be fair, the i3 and i8 were hybrid vehicles. They introduced the 13s later, which went full electric. BMW also had their wildly popular 330e, and 530e hybrid models. Mercedes-Benz had limited success when they introduced their C350e, and E350e plug-in hybrid models later. Even Volvo enjoyed some success with their top-of-the-line XC90 plug-in hybrid. Not to mention, Nissan kick-started the whole electric journey with their Nissan Leaf, officially available in Malaysia.

In any case, it seems like Malaysia is ready for another EV. At least that is what GWM (Great Wall Motors) thinks with their latest ORA GOOD CAT. It is, in the current state of writing, also the most affordable EV you can find in Malaysia today.

When we say it is the most affordable in Malaysia, you do want to take it with a pinch of salt still. It will still set you back MYR 139,800 onward. That starting price undercuts Nissan’s offering by about MYR 40,000. Even at the top, it still sits MYR 10,000 less than the Nissan Leaf.

What you get for the money though is rather impressive. You get up to 500km in range if you go for the 500 Ultra model. For MYR 30,000 less you get up to 400km in range, which is still an impressive feat in an electric car. Both are also more than what you get from a Nissan Leaf, its closest competition in our opinions.

The motor still gives you up to 143PS, which is plenty for Malaysian commuting. That silent powertrain will get the ORA GOOD CAT going at a top speed of 152km/h, still well over the national speed limit. They did not quote its 0-100km/h time though.

Still, you get to choose between Normal, Sport, Eco, Eco+, and Auto driving modes to suit your driving style and moods. It is not all about driving dynamics either with the ORA GOOD CAT. You get intelligent parking system to assist you in three types of parking modes. To ensure that you are always safe on the road, GWM put cameras at every corner of the vehicle for 360-degree coverage and wisdom dodge system that detects large vehicles and even assist in avoiding them. It also offers auto emergency braking system, just for an added layer of safety.

ORA GOOD CAT 09

Inside, it feels more like a laptop than a car. There is a 7-inch cluster display that greets you when you enter the car. That 7-inch cluster is extended to meet a 10.25-inch touch sensitive display that controls the vehicle’s multimedia systems that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Instead of a gear lever, you select your drive using a rotary knob in the center console. It even has an electronically controlled panoramic sunroof for even more interior light and that spacious feel. At the rear, your leather seats can be folded down to extend its storage to 858 liters.

The biggest problem with current EV technology is its ‘refueling’ or charging periods. With a regular AC port at your home, you can charge your car in about 8 -10 hours, depending on the size of your battery. With a fast charger, you get to charge your car fully within 2 hours, neat.

Being tech savvy does not mean that you must sacrifice sense when buying a car this high-tech. For its price, GWM has you covered extensively. If you get your ORA GOOD CAT in a package, GWM offers up to 150,000 km or 5 years warranty. Your battery is covered separately with up to 8 years or 180,000 km. While EVs are nearly free of extra maintenance services required by internal combustion engines, GWM offers your ORA GOOD CAT with five times free service labour for when maintenance is required. At the same time, GWM is even giving away a portable charger and home charger for your car.

The ORA GOOD CAT is now available in Malaysia, as mentioned, starts at MYR 139,800 for the 400 Pro option and MYR 169,800 for the 500 Ultra variant. The car has been in pre-order period for the past 3 weeks and is now officially launched. You can expect to see one on the roads soon as they are already shipping the EV to owners. You can request for a test-drive the ORA GOOD CAT at any GWM dealerships near you. More information on the ORA GOOD CAT is available on their website.
