[IFA 2023] Dolby Atmos FlexConnect Makes Getting Immersive Sound Easier

Dolby Laboratories has unveiled Remember those days of needing professional equipment to get the best quality sound from your sound systems? Well, that’s about to come to an end with the new Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, – a huge update to its Dolby Atmos surround sound. The technology brings a feature set we’ve grown accustomed to with Samsung‘s flagship QLED TVs with Q Symphony and Sony‘s Acoustic Center Sync to a broader range of TVs starting with TCL TVs that are being announced at IFA 2023.

Source: Dolby Laboratories

Dolby Atmos FlexConnect will be able to seamlessly merge your TV’s built-in sound system with compatible wireless accessory speakers anywhere in a given space. FlexConnect will then intelligently adapt to your room’s layout and your chosen speaker arrangement giving you the most optimised audio experience from every corner of your space. Sonos also introduced a similar feature with their recently announced Sonos Era 100 and Era 300 speakers.

These are the hallmark features that Dolby Laboratories has highlighted:

An Improved Dolby Atmos Experience: FlexConnect incorporates compatible wireless speakers into your Dolby Atmos-enabled TV setup. Thanks to this, it’s able to replicate the position of the object better for a more immersive sound experience. This means you’re not just watching; you’re feeling every moment through your ears.

Unconstrained Speaker Placement: FlexConnect removes the constraints of traditional speaker placement. No matter your room’s size, furniture arrangement, or power outlet locations, you can position your speakers wherever they fit best. This newfound flexibility allows you to optimize your audio setup without compromising on sound quality.

Effortless Setup: Setting up Dolby Atmos FlexConnect requires no additional equipment or a tangle of cables. Using acoustic mapping, your TV’s built-in microphones locate each wireless speaker in the room. Once they’re all accounted for, the system automatically calibrates itself to deliver the most optimized audio performance for your unique environment.

Dynamic Audio Balancing: FlexConnect intelligently distributes audio signals from your TV to each wireless speaker. It takes into account the capabilities and locations of all your available speakers, ensuring that the sound immerses you.

The technology will be making its debut in TCL’s latest TV lineup coming at IFA 2023. It will not be surprising to see other brands begin to include this feature in their upcoming offerings.

LG Celebrates 10 Consecutive Years of Being on Top with Latest OLED TVs

When you think about getting an OLED TV, there are going to be a few names you start thinking about. Since they are so popular, one of those names is inevitably LG. To be fair, they have been on top of the OLED TV market for about 10 years now, as per their claims. Why not Samsung? Samsung has moved away from the OLED technology and introduced their own cutting edge QLED technology. The thing is, OLED TVs are still some of the best-selling TVs in the market for a good reason – they still offer some of the best colour contrast and saturation you can find today.

There is plenty to like about LG’s OLED TVs too. They have a clever remote that acts sort of like a ‘magic wand’. You just point to the things or contents you want via the remote, and then select the content via the button on your remote. Like other smart TV remotes, the LG TV remote also can work with voice command. There is the webOS User Interface (UI) too, which is still one of the best UI available for smart TVs today, in our opinion. It is, in our opinion, a little more polished than even Samsung’s TizenOS for TVs, and much better to work with compared to Google TV or Android TV interfaces. Part of the polished feel of the TV is thanks to some of the most advanced processors for TVs made in the industry found in their TVs. The processor is getting a little aged though and an update is in order.

Welcome to the latest line-up of LG OLED TVs made for modern entertainment. It comes ready with LG’s proven α9 processor, but it is upgraded to make the TVs some of the best money can buy in the market. They call it the α9 AI Processor 4K Gen6 and it is programmed with LG’s latest and improved AI algorithms for image upscaling and smoothing with AI help. It does not stop at images though, it also works well with audio to offer users not just immersive and lifelike images, but also top notch surround audio to go along with the action. The new processor also offers Brightness Booster Max technology (OLED Evo G3 series) to offer brighter, sharper, and more realistic images by controlling the brightness of individual pixels allowing 70% brighter images for realistic contrasts and background separation.

They have updated webOS too for 2023 that offers even more intuitive navigation for users. Ther is a new Quick Cards feature that allows users easy access to the contents and services they use most or most recently used. The cards are even organized and grouped under the different Gaming, Music, Sports, and other available categories to give that more sorted feel to the interface. Speaking of which, these new TVs are made with modern gaming experiences in mind. Thanks to a 0.1ms response time (on Boost), NVIDIA G-Sync, and AMD FreeSync Premium support, this is the perfect large factor gaming monitor not just for your latest gaming consoles, but also for your gaming PCs. There is support for HDMI 2.1 and VRR for the latest GPUs and even the latest consoles.

For the modern home, you want a seamless and integrated look. The thinner the TVs, the easier it is for you to integrate into your living space. That is also why the 2023 line-up of LG OLED TVs are designed to be as thin as possible with a zero-gap mount design to blend into your walls. The ultra-thin bezels give the illusion that the images are painted directly on your wall, and with the most accurate black paint available for that matter. If you prefer your TVs to be your home’s centerpieces or statement pieces, there is the new LG OLED Posé Objet Collection. For your gaming set-up, you can have the best of both flat and curved displays with the OLED Flex 4K display.

The new soundbar, as mentioned, offers 3.1 channel surround sound audio. It does this without an accompanying subwoofer though. Sony has started offering their subwoofers separately, we think it is in a bid to make their soundbars more affordable and more attractive to high-density residence homeowners.

Still, that should not be too much of an issue with Sony’s HT-S2000 soundbar. It is still programmed with a powerful but small woofer module built into the soundbar itself. If you do wish to get an accompanying subwoofer, you can pair it with Sony’s existing SA-SW3 or SA-SW5 subwoofers.

Even without the subwoofer, the HT-S2000 offers Dolby Atmos surround sound experience for rich and immersive movies. It also offers DTS: X audio algorithm for clear and crisp audio experience. Sony has also fitted the soundbar with a Vertical Sound Engine and S-Force PRO technology. Both the technology combines and offers a rich, three-dimensional audio experience, even if you are playing contents with stereo audio.

Within the HT-S2000 soundbar, you can find Sony’s highly acclaimed X-balanced speaker units that offer soundstage like no other. You get clear trebles and mids with the speaker units. That also means that dialogues in movies are much cleaner and clearer than before. The driver units are also engineered to work with higher pressures for more punchy, detailed low-end sounds, even without a subwoofer. That means more boom without crackles.

You want your soundbar to be easy to work with. With Sony’s Home Entertainment Connect app, the HT-S2000 is easier than ever to work with. The app takes you through the entire set up process without a fuss wirelessly. You can even control the soundbar completely with the app. The app offers full volume control, sound fields, and even the equaliser for you to fully customise your sound experience with the soundbar. Of coures, you can update your soundbar’s firmware via the app as well.

Price and Availability

The Sony HT-S2000 will be available in Malaysia June 2023 onward. There are no colour options for the soundbar, as usual. It will set you back MYR 2,199 when it is available. For more information on the HT-S2000 soundbar, you can visit their website.

LG Releases the Most Compact Soundbar They’ve Ever Produced, the Eclair QP5 in Malaysia for MYR 2,799.

CES 2021 saw LG release their most compact soundbar yet. They announced the Eclair QP5 soundbar to the world in July of 2021. Sadly, the soundbar has not made its way into Malaysia yet at the time of launch. In some sense, it is a two-year-old product. At the same time, it is still one of LG’s more anticipated products for Malaysia.

The LG Eclair QP5 is not the most compact soundbar there is, but it is still one of the most compact soundbar you can find in the market. Even at its rather compact construction, the LG Eclair QP5 still offers a lot of power at up to 320W. It offers 3.1.2 channel of audio to really push on the surround sound capability of the soundbar.

The soundbar that comes with a subwoofer set-up is tuned by Meridian for the best possible audio reproduction a compact soundbar can get. It is also Dolby Atmos and DTS:X certified, so you can be sure that your movie and music experience is one of the best and most accurate you can find in its range.

As mentioned before, the LG Eclair offers 4K pass-through for optimized 4K and HDR contents with Dolby Vision. LG’s AI Sound Pro also analyses the contents being displayed and automatically tunes the soundbar to optimise the sounds and contents. With eARC on the HDMI port, the LG Eclair is capable of taking on transmission of 5.1-channel or 7.1-channel audio. If you have an LG TV produced from 2021 onward, you benefit from TV Mode Share that cleverly combines the processing power of LG’s proprietary α processors and AI Sound Pro to enrich sounds from any content source. Of course, you want to tamper your expectations a little when you are going through older format videos.

  • LG Eclair 1
  • LG Eclair 3
  • LG Eclair 2

The LG Eclair QP5 compact soundbar is now available in Malaysia. You can get your hands on one or even test them out at LG’s authorized dealers and stores across the nation. Sadly, there are no colour options to speak of. You can only get your hands on the black colour option. At MYR 2,799, it is not what you want to call budget-friendly too. As soundbars go though, the compact soundbar is quite perfect for a desktop set-up or even a small condominium in Malaysia. More information on the soundbar can be found on their website.

PRISM+ Officially Launches Their New Q Series Pro TVs – 86-inch 4K UHD TV for Less Than MYR 10,000? Yes, Please!

They say that your Television (TV) is the modern-day centerpiece of your living room. It becomes one of the first few furnitures that you get for a living room. It is your entertainment hub, and in the age of IoT (Internet of Things), your TV becomes your smart home’s central hub and control panel. It is no wonder that large format 4K UHD TVs is one of the first and biggest consideration when designing a home. In some cases, a modern living room is designed around your TV choices.

Choosing the right TV set for your home is not easy though. There are plenty of choices for a TV today, anywhere from the budget option to the premium option. In the world of TVs though, you get what you pay for. What if we tell you that you can get more than what you pay for?

If you have not heard of PRISM+, we cannot really blame you for it. It is, technically, a new player in the display industry. They made their mark in Malaysia back in 2021 by first releasing their 34-inch ultra-wide gaming monitor.

They have since grown strength to strength, launching new models catering to a larger variety of needs. Their growth can also be associated with the fact that their displays are some of the best valued displays you can find in the market. This is also translated when they started launching their Q series TV sets.

photo6332435752306192769

To be fair, they have launched their 86-inch Q Series Pro (Q86 PRO QE) TV before today. The 4K UHD TV packs Quantum IPS technology with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos technology for a rather surprising price. At retail, the Prism+ TV will set you back MYR 8,999. An equivalent Quantum Dot TV from Samsung will set you back at least twice the price.

What if you need something smaller though? What about a 65-inch? Smaller? 55-inch perhaps?

PRISM+ now have a solution for you in the Q65 PRO QE, and Q55 PRO QE. They are practically the same products as the larger Q86 PRO QE that came before, but in smaller form factor’s to fit tighter spaces. They are perfect for smaller households and if you are just looking to add some flavour in your own rooms.

The QE in their naming refers to Quantum Edition, which also refers to the Quantum technology that you will get in the TVs. No, unfortunately it is not an OLED display that you are getting. Instead, you get the next best thing to OLED, IPS LCD display. You are still getting highly vivid colours while eliminating the risk of OLED burn-ins.

photo6332435752306192762

All of them are good for 4K UHD resolution at 60Hz, not 120Hz. 4K UHD 120Hz contents are reserved for the latest generation gaming consoles though, so you might not be missing out on much. At least you still get to experience 4K gaming in this case.

Still, what it lacks for in refresh rate, it makes up in image quality. The panel is rated for HDR10 with 1.07 billion colours, which also means you get excellent colour contrast. With the addition of Dolby Vision tuning, movies on the screen comes to life with even darker blacks, and brighter whites. You can even see those details in the dark in this case.

To ensure that your immersion stays true, you get Dolby Atmos tuned speakers to ensure you hear every little thing in all the right directions. Of course, if you can pair it to Dolby Atmos speakers, you get even better surround effects. You can plug your external speakers, soundbars, or sound system via Bluetooth 5.0, optical cable, or HDMI ARC connection.

It runs Android TV OS 10,0 too, the latest and greatest from Google currently. With Android TV 10.0, Google Chromecast is also built-in, allowing you to stream your smartphone contents to your TV whenever you want or need. Of course, with Android TV 10.0, you get Google Assistant built in as well. Instead of speaking into your remote though, the Prism+ Q Series PRO TVs come with far-field microphones so that you can command the TV to do whatever you need to it do from the comforts of your couch just via a “Hey Google”, or “Okay Google” command.

The PRISM+ Q55 PRO QE and Q65 PRO QE is now available on PRISM+ online store and all their online retail partners. Every purchase of the Q Series PRO TV will entitle you to exclusive free gifts, while stocks last. The 55-inch Q55 PRO QE will set you back MYR 2,399, while the 65-inch Q65 PRO QE retails at MYR 3,299. For more information on the Prism+ Q Series PRO TVs you can head over to their website.

PRISM+ Launches New Q86 PRO Quantum Edition in Malaysia

When it comes to Android TVs, we’re used to spending thousands on getting the best of both software and hardware. This rings especially true with technologies like Quantum Dot or Full Array LEDs, however, PRISM+ is looking to change that with a series of affordable smart TVs running on Android TV. The company isn’t new to displays, in fact, the Singaporean company has made its name making some of the most affordable monitors on the market. Samsung Augments TV & Soundbar Offerings with NFTs, Game Streaming & More

Samsung has been busy over the last year learning from the release of its Neo QLED, Lifestyle and Micro LED screens. They’ve been looking at trends and features that will help augment and enhance the user experience across the board when it comes to their displays. It looks like they’ve also taken some user and review feedback into consideration in the upcoming generation of displays. Also, Samsung has created one of the slimmest soundbars coming to a store near you.

Samsung’s Micro LED TVs Get Better Colour Accuracy, Slimmer Bezels and Better Brightness Control

Samsung’s Micro LED TVs are leading their line up with new enhancements that bolster the viewing experience of the TVs. The TVs come with better colour accuracy and more accurate control of brightness and colour levels. The new generation of Micro LED TVs come with over 1 million steps of brightness and colour levels. This improvement will be crucial in providing an even more true to life experience when viewing HDR content. In addition to this, the lineup covers 100% of the DCI and Adobe RGB colour gamuts. Samsung is also upping the ante when it comes to bezels as the new generation comes with a 99.99% screen-to-body ratio. That’s virtually no bezel!

MICRO LED 1

The hardware enhancements are just the tip of the iceberg, the new generation Micro LED TVs will also be coming with Art Mode which we’ve seen exclusively in the company’s lifestyle TVs until now. Users are able to make their TVs blend seamlessly into their decor by turning the screen into stunning art pieces. It will also have an improved Multi View mode which allows users to view content from multiple HDMI slots in 4K resolution at up to 120fps.

The new lineup of Micro LED TVs will be available in three sizes, 89-, 101- and 110-inch.

Neo QLED TVs Get A New Neo Quantum Processor & More Immersive Sound

Samsung’s Neo QLED TV offerings are getting a new processor which allows its Neo QLED TVs to provide an even more immersive experience. The new Neo Quantum Processor brings a few more features that elevate the viewing experience. All the features address issues that were raised in the past by reviewers and customers.

The new Samsung Neo Quatum Processor is introducing advanced contrast mapping with back-light unit (BLU). This allows for finer control of brightness levels; increased from a 12-bit gradation to a 14-bit gradation. This translates to 16,384 steps or quadruple the 4096 of the previous generation. The increased control of the Quantum Mini LEDs will ensure your eyes don’t get blown out by the sudden whiteouts in movies while watching.

Together with this, the new processor also enables what Samsung calls “Shape Adaptive Light”. This feature will utilise the Neo Quantum Processor to analyse lines, shapes and surfaces to control the shape of light from the Quantum Mini LEDs. This will, supposedly, increase the brightness and accuracy of shapes on screen enhancing the HDR experience on Neo QLED TVs. The TVs will also feature a Real Depth Enhancer, an multi-intelligence algorithm that will make things appear more realistic on screen.

Samsung is also leveraging AI technology to help reduce eye strain. It’s EyeComfort mode automatically optimises the screen’s brightness using data from the built-in light sensor and sunset-sunrise information. This allows the processor to lower brightness based on ambient light information and decrease blue light emissions accordingly. Samsung has also improved Object Tracking Sound (OTS). OTS Pro incorporates a new set of upfiring speakes to create a more immersive soundscape.

Together with the new lineup of Soundbars, Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs will provide an immersive soundscape that will immerse viewers in their content. Q Symphony will also be supported wirelessly in 2022. The wireless Dolby Atmos connectivity will allow for a more adaptable setup for any room. The new HW-S800B spearheads the soundbar offerings as the first Ultra Slim soundbar.

Lifestyle TVs Mattified

Samsung’s line up of Lifestyle TVs are all getting matte displays. The new display finish reduces smudges, glare and reflectivity of the screens allowing for a more comfortable experience. In fact, The Sero, The Frame and The Serif are all triple certififed from UL (Underwriter Laboratories) for being ‘Reflection Glare Free’, ‘Discomfort Glare Free’ and ‘Disability Glare Free’. Multi View on The Sero is getting an upgrade. It will now work even in vertical mode. This will allow you to simulataneously view two sources on the top and bottom portions of the screen.

The Serif is getting a larger, 65-inch option in addition to its 43-inch and 55-inch options. The Frame is available in sizes ranging from 32-inches to 85-inches.

SmartHub Brings Game Streaming, NFTs & Emotional Connection

SmartHub is getting a little bit of a redesign this year. The redesign brings the focus back to content curation with content discovery front and center. The sidebar is also more streamlined. Users will be able to seamlessly jump between Media, Gaming Hub and Ambient sections to navigate their content. Together with this, SmartHub is also getting smart calibration which will optimise your settings for the best picture quality. Basic calibration will take 30 seconds while Professional mode will optimise in about 10 minutes.

The Frame 1

The visual upgrade also brings along a new NFT platform where you’ll be able to display, discover and purchase NFTs. Gaming Hub is also getting a new upgrade with more content coming to the platform. Samsung has partnered with NVIDIA GeForce Now, Google Stadia and Utomik to bring AAA titles and other top tier games to their TVs. You’ll also be able to take advantage of higher refresh rates in Neo QLED TVs. You’ll also be able to watch your favourite shows while on video chat with your loved ones – making the distance between that much closer.

Together with the additions to SmartHub, Samsung’s TV catalogue is getting a new Auto Rotating Wall Mount and Stand. This will bring the viewing experience of The Sero across all the whole TV line up for 2022. The mount will allow you to mirror vertical screens seamlessly. The accessory is also getting a dedicated rotate button on Samsung’s remote control.

Compatibility, Sound Preference, or Location: Which Samsung Soundbar is the one for you?

When it comes to selecting a sound system, there are various variables to consider. This depends on your goals and demands, how you use your leisure time, whether watching movies or playing video games and even how compatible it is with the rest of your entertainment system. For some, the visual may be the most important factor, while for others, the sound quality is what makes their entertainment come alive.

Curious to know which is most suitable for you? Here are Samsung’s recommendations on which soundbar you should go for based on your needs:

HW A550 A series Soundbar
  • For gamers: If you own a gaming console and have been looking for an immersive sound experience, consider the Q-Series Soundbar with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. With the ultimate 3D sound coming to you from every direction, you’ll be able to feel like you’ve stepped into your TV and are experiencing the game in the first person. The Q800A Soundbar comes with three channels, one subwoofer channel, and two up-firing channels – which ultimately means that the sound moves around you based on the action on your screen. Not only does it bring your games to life, but you can also experience playing music on a whole other level, as with the ‘Tap Sound’ feature, you can simply tap the soundbar, and it will recognize your device and play the song you’re currently playing on your phone.
  • Seamless compatibility with other devices: If you’re looking for an all-rounder soundbar that can jive with all of your devices, you can consider the S-Series All-in-One Soundbar with Acoustic Beam and built-in Bixby Voice Assistant. You won’t have to worry about where you’re placing it in your house as it’s designed to fill the room with immersive sound and improved audio quality with its dual-sided horn speakers and Samsung’s Acoustic Beam® technology.
Q800A Soundbar with Dolby Atmos and DTSX
  • All about the bass: The bass makes a great sound system for music lovers. If blasting music and dancing to your heart’s desire is your thing, you can go for the A-Series Soundbar with the Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS Virtual:X feature to give you immersive surround sound simulation. Imagine rewatching one of your favourite live concerts with the Powerful Bass Boost that’s connected to its very own wireless subwoofer – surely nothing could go wrong. The A-Series Soundbar can also connect to two different mobile devices simultaneously, allowing you and your friends to switch between your favourite playlists at any given time.

Sony Launches the SRS-NS7, a Personal Dolby Atmos Experience

What do you do when you want to have a personal audio experience at home? What if you think that soundbars are a little too much? What if you do not want to have a headphone weighing down your head? You have the Sony SRS-NS7 wearable wireless speaker.

The SRS-NS7 wearable speaker is a unique way of enjoying entertainment at home though. It is pretty much a sound bar you wear around your neck. With its wireless transmitter, you simply connect it to your TV or whatever media source you would like to experience with the SRS-NS7.

The WLA-NS7 wireless transmitter that comes with the SRS-NS7 does not only work with the speaker though. It also works with select headphones to achieve the same experience you would get from the SRS-NS7.

The SRS-NS7 is in a class of its own though paired to the WLA-NS7 and paired to Sony’s BRAVIA XR TVs. With Sony’s BRAVIA TVs, the SRS-NS7 can deliver Dolby Atmos experience to your ears from the neck. The combination of the Sony BRAVIA TV, wireless transmitter, and SRS-NS7 neck speaker you get access to Sony’s 360 Reality audio for some Spatial awareness, virtual surround sound if you haven’t understood yet. Of course, 360 Reality Audio also works with music form Deezer, and TIDAL when connected to your smartphone.

While it is not a headphone unit, the neck speaker unit allows you the immersive experience comparable to Sony’s soundbars without disturbing anyone else at home or filling the entire room with noise. The upward facing speaker is optimised to deliver rich immersive audio without the frills of disturbing your neighbours or even your loved ones in the other room.
