Dell’s approach caters to four personas shaped by their work and the nature of their functions: the builder, the connector, the producer and the specialist.

Devices for the Builders & Connectors in Organisations

Builders are people focused on building the business primarily dealing with people and company strategy while connectors bring people together and optimize outcomes by balancing collaboration and team interests. These workers need to be nimble and productive requiring devices that not only serve as productivity tools but also tools for presentations but more importantly, these tools need to be as portable and light as they need to be on their feet.

Dell has created multiple devices across their Precision and Latitude lineups with multimode productivity. The Precision lineup brings the required power with top of the line graphics powered by NVIDIA’s RTX Ada generation graphics. These setups range from mobile, portable laptops like the Precision Mobile Workstation 5480 that packs the powerful internals needed for detail oriented work into a slim, portable body to the Precision 7960 Tower that brings the power in a more convention desktop as well as the Precision 7960 Rack which brings the specifications to servers allowing remote access with data security.

Bringing Diversity & Sustainability to the Forefront

Dell’s Optiplex line up, on the other hand, falls squarely into the spaces between these personas bringing productivity focused machines into compact, space saving form factors. That said, Dell’s solutions across the board are guided by the company’s many sustainability goals and moonshot goals. It comes as no surprise that all of these devices come with a substantial amount of optimisations and materials which reduce the environmental impact of the company and devices. Dell has incorporated things like Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastics, sustainably sourced metals and components made of recycled materials.

Dell has also brought some of their ideas and learnings from their many concept devices like Concept Luna to their new devices. They haven’t even more sustainability plans in the works which will make their debuts with future products.

The new servers have been optimised from the chassis to their internals to provide better cooling and airflow. Paired with Dell’s AI-enabled CouldIQ, the new PowerEdge lineup is poised to provide customers with lower overheads and greener operations.

With Dell’s Smart Flow design, servers are able to cool more efficiently with up to a 52% reduction in fan power. They are also empowering customers to be more sustainable with the OpenManage Enterprise Power Manager 3.0 software which allows customers to better manage their operations efficiency. It also them to actively monitor carbon emissions and set power caps up to 82% faster. All these features come in addition to the insights it gives on server use, virtual machines and facility energy consumption and leak detection for liquid-cooled systems. Optimised Cloud Service Provider Solutions

Dell’s new portfolio isn’t just for businesses. They’re also looking as cloud service providers with the Dell PowerEdge HS5610 and HS5620. These servers deliver services that are optimised and tailored to cloud service providers. Coming in 1U and 2U form factors, these two-socket servers are looking to provide cloud service providers with a new edge. They are even cold aisle serviceable. Dell has also equipped these systems with Dell Open Server Manager which simplifies multi-vendor fleet management.

Powerful Simplicity

Dell’s PowerEdge servers are looking to take conventional servers and turn them into efficient powerhouses. With offerings like the Dell PowerEdge R760, the company is able to deliver up to 2.9x greater AI inferencing with Intel’s 4th Generation Xeon processors. Intel’s Deep Learning Boost and Intel Advanced Matrix Extensions are key in delivering the performance boost. The R760 is able to accommodate up to 20% more VDI users than previous generations and over 50% more SAP Sales & Distribution users in a single server. It can be further enhanced with NVIDIA’ Bluefield-2 data processing units to provide additional power for private, hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

Dell’s PowerEdge XE9680, XE9640 and XE8640 are all built and optimised for AI and HPC workloads. Designed in close collaboration with Intel and NVIDIA, the servers are built to enable AI for model training, HPC modelling and simulation, core-to-edge inferencing and data visualisation. Coming with power specifications like the NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core or NVIDIA GPUs the systems are able to train and deploy machine learning models for automation and analysis. The new designs also allow for higher rack density with PowerEdge.

EPYC Performance

It isn’t just a one-sided thing with Dell. PowerEdge also embraces AMD’s EPYC technology. The increasingly power-efficient performance of AMD’s EPYC processors has allowed Dell to design PowerEdge systems that create the backbone of data centres. With 1U and 2U form factors, these PowerEdge servers are designed to enable data storage and performance computing with better power efficiency.

Easy Deployment for Scalability and Zero Trust

The PowerEdge servers are also built with security in mind. They empower Zero Trust deployments in any given organisation. Everything from hardware to software is fortified for better data security. Dell’s Secure Component Verification (SCV) works in tandem with silicon-based hardware root of trust to verify supply chain security from design to delivery.

In addition, Dell’s PowerEdge offerings are being deployed not only as hardware purchases which fall under CapEx. Instead, Dell is also deploying them in an “as-a-service” offering which allows companies to better optimise CapEx spending with OpEx flexibility.

Work On the Go with Dell’s New Latitude Lineup

Dell’s Latitude laptops have long been one of the go-to devices when it comes to corporate and commercial customers. Latitudes are known for their durability and reliability when it comes to performance. This year, Dell is bringing even more power to the Dell Latitude lineup with more features and upgrades for work on the go. The lineup has been updated with Intel’s 13th Generation Core processors for added power and efficiency.

Introducing the Small but Powerful Latitude 9440

The new Dell Latitude 9440 infuses the Latitude lineup with portability, power and design from Dell’s flagship XPS series. The 9440 combines form with function with its unique 2-in-1 design that allows it to transform from a laptop into a tablet and even a presentation surface seamlessly. Perfect for the entrepreneur, salesperson or C-suite executive.

Together with the new design and aluminium chassis, the new Latitude 9440 comes with a zero lattice keyboard with miniLED backlights. The keycaps are larger with no gaps. The miniLED backlights bring power efficiency with up to 75% less power usage providing up to 3 hours of increased battery life.

The Lattitude 9440 is also the smallest commercial 14-inch laptop. The small, compact chassis incorporates a 14-inch display in what has conventionally housed a smaller 13-inch display. It also keeps things crisp with a high-resolution InfinityEdge QHD+ panel in a functional 16:10 aspect ratio.

The 9440 also builds on its predecessor, the 9330. Where the 9330 made conferencing and video calls easier, the 9440 brings a customizable haptic touchpad for better collaboration. Users will be able to adjust and personalise the haptics of the touchpad to suit their work style. Together with this, the touchpad comes with quick toggles that allow users to toggle their mic and camera as well as quick toggles for screen sharing and chat which integrate with Zoom out of the box. Compatibility with Microsoft Teams will come later this year.

Ultralight Portability with the new Dell Latitude 7000 series

While the 9440 shines with its premium build and features, the Latitude 7000 series brings many of those features to a more accessible price point. It also brings a new focus on being Ultralight and portable – perfect for those who need to work on the go and in the field.

The Lattitude 7340 and 7440 ultralight bring the same miniLED backlit keyboard technology as the 9440. The magnesium chassis makes it one of the lightest in Dell’s portfolio but preserves the durability that the Latitude lineup is known for. The 7000 series is also available with aluminium chassis and a larger 16-inch option.

Together with these features, the Latitude 7000 series is also getting better connectivity on the go thanks to 5G. This combined with a 5-megapixel IR camera makes it perfect for working remotely.

Completing the Lineup with Latitude 5000 Series

Rounding up Dell’s Latitude lineup is the 5000 series which brings all the essentials when it comes to working remotely. It comes complete with options for 2-in-1 laptops and a Chromebook in the Latitude 5430.

The Latitude 5000 series focuses on enabling remote work with a complete array of ports, a long-lasting battery and cutting-edge connectivity. This year, the series comes with 14- and 15-inch options with a smaller footprint than before. It also focuses on key experiences which include privacy-centric features like Look-away detect and Onlooker detection.

The Dell Latitude Chromebook 5430 completes the lineup with a cloud-native option which runs Google’s ChromeOS. It brings the whole suite of experiences that make the Latitude line up in a highly scalable package with options for every need.

[CES 2023] New Alienware Hardware & Dell Gaming Laptops Break Covers

Dell has been pushing the bar recently with its gaming offerings and concepts. Together with the new update to Concept Nyx, the company also announced new additions to its gaming offerings in its Alienware and Dell G portfolio. While some of them come with design updates, the laptops come with the latest 13th generation Intel or AMD Ryzen Zen 4 processor and also the latest NVIDIA GeForce RTX40 series Laptop GPUs or AMD’s Radeon 7000M GPUs.

Alienware m18 & m16 Supped Up and Ready To Go!

The new Alienware line up is spearheaded by a refreshed M series which comes with two new additions: the m18 and m16. Both laptops continue to stay focused on delivering the best gaming performance possible. They also come with the Legend 3.0 design language – a refinement on Legend Design which was announced a few years ago.

The biggest difference between this generation and the last generation M-series is the displays. This generation ditches the 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch displays for slightly larger 16- and 18-inch displays. These displays come with a 16:10 aspect ratio and support resolutions of up to 2560×1600 pixels (QHD+) with 240Hz refresh. If you are looking for higher refresh rates, there is an option for an FHD+ panel with a 480Hz refresh rate.

Of course, Alienware’s M-series continues to support customisation via their website and supports a myriad of options when it comes to internals with up to 64GB of dual channel DDR5 4800 MHz RAM and up to 9TB of internal storage with its Quad Storage configurations. Connectivity-wise they support Killer WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. There is even an option for Cherry MX mechanical keys for the laptops as well. AlienFX also makes a comeback with multiple zones customizable from the updated Alienware Command Center.

When it comes to processors, the M-series maxes out with a 24-core Intel Core i9-13900HX. On the graphics end of things, the NVIDIA RTX 4090 Laptop GPU with 150W TGP is top of the line offering. To support the performance that the internals bring, Dell has equipped the Alienware M series with am updated cooling system. The vapour chamber now covers the CPU and GPU increasing the thermal capacity by 35% and there are now seven heat pipes that help with heat disipation. It comes without saying that they’ve also increased the airflow with quad fans with ultrathin fan blades.

The AMD equipped Alienware M-series will make its debut later in the year.

Alienware x16 & x14 Forge the Way for Portability

The Alienware X-series is also getting a bump when it comes to performance. The X16 and X14 succeed the previous models. However, they continue to inherit the sleek aluminium build that was introduced with the X series. Similar to the M series, the X series is replacing its larger x15 and x17 with the x16 while the x14 retains its compact size.

The new Alienware x16 and x14 come with an updated 16:10 aspect ratio and sport displays with up to 2560×1600 pixel (QHD+) with 165Hz refresh rate on the x14 and 240Hz on the x15. Both boast a 3ms response time. The displays also support 100% of the DCI-P3 gamut and NVIDIA’s Advanced Optimus technology.

When it comes to storage, the X series with up to 4TB of internal storage with up to 32GB of RAM. To keep things slim and portable the internal memory modules of the X series as solderd on to the motherboard. So, you won’t be able to add more later on. That said, it also provides a boost in performance. AlienFX is also avaiable and customisable on the Alienware x14 and x16.

Performance wise, the laptops are avaialble in different configurations. The Alienware x16 caps out with Intel Core i9-13900HK while the x14 caps out with the Intel Core i5-13620H. On the graphics end of things, the x16 maxes out with the NVIDIA RTX 4090 laptop GPU with a max TGP of 175W. The x14, on the other hand, caps out with the RTX 4060 with 85W TGP. Both support charging via USB-C.

Similar to the M series, AMD versions will be announced later in the year.

Revamped Dell G15 & G16 Bring Self Expression Front and Center

The Dell gaming laptop line up is getting a major update with the new G15 & G16. Both will sport the updated design which incorporates a more industrial feel, larger air vents and customizable colourways. The latter is more prominently spotlighted in the G15 models which sport retro ’80s pop aesthetics including a funky purple and blue colourway. The Dell G15 and G16 continue to inherit most of the design queues from last years model including the placement of ports and the signature Dell Gaming hinge.

The Dell G15 and G16 will be comeing with a new cooling system. Both will sport a vapour cooling system inspired by the system we’ve seen in Alienware laptops for better cooling. The system now sports four heat pipers with improved fans with ultrathin blades and an improved heat exchange area. Some of the configurations will come with Element 31 thermal interface and vapour cooling as well. These thermal updates will support the cutting-edge performance of the processors. Both models have configurations capping out with the Intel Core i9-13900HX and support up to the NVIDIA RTX 4070 Laptop GPU.

On the display side of things, the Dell G16 comes with options sporting up to 2560×1600 pixels in resolution (QHD+) and up to 240Hz refresh rate. The G15 on the other hand sports options for FHD displays with 1920×1080 pixels with a maximum of 165Hz refresh rate. That said, the G16 only supports a single zone customization when it comes to AlienFX while the G15 supports up to four zones. Both also support WiFi 6 connectivity.

Similar to its Alienware cousins, AMD versions of the Dell G15 and G16 will be released later this year.

[CES 2023] Dell’s Concept Nyx Gains the “One Controller to Rule Them All”

Dell took the stage last year with their eye-catching Concept Nyx. The concept device took a jab at gaming on the edge. With Concept Nyx, Dell was looking at creating a new gaming and living room experience with edge connectivity. Edge connectivity or connectivity at the edge of the network is something we’ll be hearing more and more about with 5G becoming more mainstream.

With Concept Nyx, Dell Technologies is looking to enable remote gaming with WiFi and 5G connectivity. They’re looking to accomplish this with a device or box that provides remote access to gaming libraries like Steam and more. This device can be placed in spaces like the living room and can support more than one instance. So, you’ll be able to play HALO while your sister plays Valorant at the same time on the same screen. It can even support multiple instances of the same game allowing you to play together.

The One Controller To Rule Them All

This year, Dell Technologies is taking Concept Nyx a little further. They’ve introduced the Concept Nyx Game Controller – the “One Controller to Rule Them All”. So, what makes this controller so different? The first thing that sets it apart is an integrated fingerprint sensor which will allow a myriad of personalization. The integrated fingerprint sensor could unlock personal settings or launch the last game that you played with a single touch.

Dell is also experimenting with haptics in the controller. The controller is looking to incorporate variable resistance into their thumb sticks. The variable resistance can be set to either player preference or adapt to game specific settings. Imagine playing God of War and feeling the tug when you pull down barriers or slam enemies into the ground. The X-triggers could also incorporate the same.

In addition, the Concept Nyx Controller comes with shift buttons for additional options on front buttons and innovative scroll wheels which could be used to quickly scroll through your game weapons. There’s also an intelligent touchpad for instant access to customisable controls. It also comes with a fully customisable intelligent on-screen controls and overlays which will make sure you don’t get them buttons mixed up.

Taking Concept Nyx to the Next Level

While the big advancement this year is the Concept Nyx Controller, Dell isn’t just pushing hardware. Devs working on Concept Nyx have expanded what was shown last year with a better, more simplified dashboard. In addition to this, Concept Nyx is also being expanded to multitask more efficiently like connecting to multiple headsets; each with a unique audio stream. This also includes better splitscreen experiences. AI is also looking to make its mark on Concept Nyx with Dell experimenting with AI for things like dynamic listening to allow players to know when they’re being called.

While there’s no commercially available product just yet, Concept Nyx is quickly being moulded by gaming. That said, you may see some of Nyx’s features make its way to products in Dell’s portfolio.

Dell Technologies Updated Storage Software Solutions Enable Better Data Resilience

Dell Technologies is updating its portfolio of storage solutions to empower businesses with better data resilience and flexibility. The newly updated solutions take the lead from businesses which have inadvertently adopted a multi-cloud approach which Dell has identified as “Multi-Cloud by Default”. These updated solutions enable businesses to seamlessly access and store data across their multiple clouds while increasing efficiency.

Dell’s PowerStore, PowerMax and PowerFlex have been updated with over 500 software advancements across the board to deliver better multi-cloud control, insights and resilience. The updates come as part of Dell’s project Alpine which looks to bring enterprise performance, protection and capacity that is offered by Dell Technologies to public clouds.

The Dell PowerStore solution is one of the fastest ramping new architecture in Dell’s history. It is capable of delivering improvements of up to 50% in mixed workloads and up to 66% greater capacity than most of the current market offerings. With the new software updates, it now supports better, more secured file workloads with file level retention, native file replication and support for third-party solutions for file monitoring and ransomware protection. Deeper VMware integrations which empower better vVols latency and performance allow businesses to run more workloads faster. In addition, it’s been imbued with added resilience with better VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes (vVolss) replication and VM-level snapshots and fast clones.

PowerMax, on the other hand, empowers mission-critical operations with data security and resilience. These include cyber vaults for traditional and mainframe deployments. It comes with added data security thanks to CouldIQ ransomware capabilities which enable early detection of ransomware attacks minimizing exposure and recovery. Dell PowerMax now offers up to 65 million secure snapshots to better data recovery and resiliency with a new 4:1 data reduction guarantee. Software updates enable automated storage operations including multi-array smart provisioning, workload optimisation, health monitoring and remediation. It will also be able to quickly move and mobilise workloads between public and private clouds with snapshot shipping and recovery. This also allows for better, higher availability to minimise downtime.

Rounding up their offerings, Dell PowerFlex is available to help consolidate traditional and modern workloads. It does this through new file services that allow for a unified platform for both block and file capabilities. PowerFlex works to simplify the complexities of a multi-cloud environment as well as DevOps with support for the broadest file and block support for all Kubernetes and container orchestration platforms from Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Red Hat, SUSE and VMware. New software updates also allow PowerFlex to unify compute, storage and system lifecycle management helping simplify workflow.

These innovations and cloud storage solutions from Dell Technologies is one of the first steps the company is taking to its vision of a multi-cloud by design work environment. In this new work environment, entreprises are able to work on-prem and in the cloud with the flexibility and security needed regardless of being in the public or private cloud. In fact, they will work seamlessly as data and operations stores and retrieves data from both.

The Dell PowerMax and Dell PowerStore updates and upgrades will be available globally starting in mid-July 2022 while PowerFlex will see global availability in mid-August 2022.

2022 and Beyond – Technologies that will Change the Dialogue

We are living in a do-anything-from-anywhere economy enabled by an exponentially expanding data ecosystem. It’s estimated 65% of Global GDP will be digital next year (2022). This influx of data presents both opportunities and challenges. After all, success in our digital present and future relies on our ability to secure and maintain increasingly complex IT systems. Here I’ll examine both near-term and long-term predictions that address the way the IT industry will deliver the platforms and capabilities to harness this data to transform our experiences at work, home and in the classroom.  

What to look for in 2022:  

The Edge discussion will separate into two focus areas – edge platforms that provide a stable pool of secure capacity for the diverse edge ecosystems and software defined edge workloads/software stacks that extend application and data systems into real world environments. This approach to Edge, where we separate the edge platforms from the edge workloads, is critical since, if each edge workload creates its own dedicated platform, we will have proliferation of edge infrastructure and unmanageable infrastructure sprawl.

Imagine an edge environment where you deploy an edge platform that presents compute, storage, I/O and other foundational IT capacities in a stable, secure, and operationally simple way. As you extend various public and private cloud data and applications pipelines to the edge along with local IoT and data management edges, they can be delivered as software-defined packages leveraging that common edge platform of IT capacity. This means that your edge workloads can evolve and change at software speed because the underlying platform is a common pool of stable capacity.

We are already seeing this shift today. Dell Technologies currently offers edge platforms for all the major cloud stacks, using common hardware and delivery mechanisms. As we move into 2022, we expect these platforms to become more capable and pervasive. We are already seeing most edge workloads – and even most public cloud edge architectures – shift to software-defined architectures using containerisation and assuming standard availably of capacities such as Kubernetes as the dial tone. This combination of modern edge platforms and software-defined edge systems will become the dominant way to build and deploy edge systems in the multi-cloud world.

The opening of the private mobility ecosystem will accelerate with more cloud and IT industries involved on the path to 5G. Enterprise use of 5G is still early. In fact, today 5G is not significantly different or better than WiFi in most enterprise use cases. This will change in 2022 as more modern, capable versions of 5G become available to enterprises. We will see higher performance and more scalable 5G along with new 5G features such as Ultra Reliability Low Latency Communications (UR-LLC) and Massive Machine Type Communicators (mMTC), with dialogue becoming much more dominant than traditional telecoms (think: open-source ecosystem, infrastructure companies, non-traditional telecom).

More importantly we expect the ecosystem, delivering new and more capable private mobility, will expand to include IT providers such as Dell Technologies but also public cloud providers and even new Open-Source ecosystems focused on acceleration of the Open 5G ecosystem.

Edge will become the new battleground for data management as data management becomes a new class of workload. The data management ecosystem needs an edge. The modern data management industry began its journey on public clouds processing and analysing non-real-time centralised data. As the digital transformation of the world accelerates, it has become clear that most of the data in the world will be created and acted on outside of centralised data centers. We expect that the entire data management ecosystem will become very active in developing and utilising edge IT capacity as the ingress and egress of their data pipelines but will also utilise edges to remotely process and digest data.

As the data management ecosystem extends to the edge this will dramatically increase the number of edge workloads and overall edge demand. This correlates to our first prediction on edge platforms as we expect these data management edges to be modern software-defined offerings. Data management and the edge will increasingly converge and reinforce each other. IT infrastructure companies, like Dell Technologies, have the unique opportunity to provide the orchestration layer for edge and multi-cloud by delivering an edge data management strategy.

The security industry is now moving from discussion of emerging security concerns to a bias toward action. Enterprises and governments are facing threats of greater sophistication and impact on revenue and services. At the same time, the attack surface that hackers can exploit is growing based on the accelerated trend in remote work and digital transformation. As a result, the security industry is responding with greater automation and integration. The industry is also pivoting from automated detection to prevention and response with a focus on applying AI and machine learning to speed remediation. This is evidenced by industry initiatives like SOAR (Security Orchestration Automation & Response), CSPM (Cloud Security Posture Management) and XDR (Extended, Detection and Response). Most importantly we are seeing new efforts such as the Open Secure Software Foundation in the Linux Foundation ramp up the coordination and active involvement of the IT, telecom and semiconductor industries.

Across all four of these areas – edge, private mobility, data management and security – there is a clear need for a broad ecosystem where both public cloud and traditional infrastructure are integrated. We are now clearly in a multi-cloud, distributed world where the big challenges can no longer be solved by a single data center, cloud, system or technology.

What to look for beyond 2022:

Quantum Computing – Hybrid quantum/classical compute will take center stage providing greater access to quantum.  In 2022 we expect two major industry consensuses to emerge. First, we expect the industry will see the inevitable topology of a quantum system will be a hybrid quantum computer where the quantum hardware or quantum processing units (QPU) are specialised compute systems that look like accelerators and focus on specific quantum focused mathematics and functions. The QPUs will be surrounded by conventional compute systems to pre-process the data, run the overall process and even interpret the output of the QPUs.

Early real-world quantum systems are all following this hybrid quantum model and we see a clear path where the collaboration of classical and quantum compute is inevitable. The second major consensus is that quantum simulation using conventional computing will be the most cost effective and accessible way to get quantum systems into the hands of our universities, data science teams and researchers. In fact, Dell and IBM already announced significant work in making quantum simulation available to the world.

Automotive The automotive ecosystem will rapidly shift focus from a mechanical ecosystem to a data and compute industry.  The automotive industry is transforming at several levels. We are seeing a shift from Internal Combustion Engines to Electrified Vehicles resulting in radical simplification of the physical supply chain. We are also seeing a significant expansion of software and compute content within our automobiles via ADAS and autonomous vehicle efforts. Finally, we are seeing the automotive industry becoming data driven industries for everything from entertainment, to safety to major disruptions such as Car-as-a-Service and automated delivery.

All of this says that the automotive and transportation industries are beginning a rapid transition to be driven by software, compute and data. We have seen this in other industries such as telecom and retail and in every case the result is increased consumption of IT technology. Dell is actively engaged with most of the world’s major automotive companies in their early efforts, and we expect 2022 to continue their evolution towards digital transformation and deep interaction with IT ecosystems.

Digital Twins – Digital Twins will become easier to create and consume as the technology is more clearly defined with dedicated tools. While gaining in awareness, digital twins is still a nascent technology with few real examples in production. Over the next several years, we’ll see digital twins become easier to create and consume as we define standardised frameworks, solutions and platforms. Making digital twin ideas more accessible will enable enterprises to provide enhanced analytics and predictive models to accelerate digital transformation efforts. Digital twin adoption will become more mainstream with accelerated standardisation and availability of solutions and framework, bringing deployment and investment costs down. Digital twins will be the core driver of Digital transformation 3.0 combining measured and modeled/simulated worlds for direct business value across industry verticals.

As a technology optimist, I increasingly see a world where humans and technology work together to deliver impactful outcomes at an unprecedented speed. These near-term and long-term perspectives are based on the strides we’re making today. If we see even incremental improvement, there is enormous opportunity to positively transform the way we work, live and learn and 2022 will be another year of accelerated technology innovation and adoption.
