NalaGenetics Spearheading Genetic Relevance in Healthcare with Personalized Medicine

Let’s talk a little about NalaGenetics, one of the winners of the recent ZIC. NalaGenetics was founded on the belief that genetic testing could radically improve how patients are diagnosed and treated, particularly when it comes to drug metabolism, disease prevention, and overall health management. The company specializes in creating genetic tests that can predict how individuals will respond to medications, helping physicians tailor treatments more accurately to reduce adverse reactions and improve health outcomes.

In a world where medications are often designed based on a “one-size-fits-all” approach, NalaGenetics offers a much-needed alternative. Genetic testing can reveal how certain populations, such as Asians, metabolize drugs differently. This is even more pertinent with recent studies showing an increasing disparity between genetic populations and treatment efficacy. One such study highlights that 40-50% of Asians don’t respond well to the commonly prescribed anti-platelet medication Clopidogrel. It goes on to present data that shows that this population also sees an increased risk of cardiovascular events when prescribed Clopidogrel.

As part of the Zurich Innovation Championship, Zurich in Malaysia and NalaGenetics entered into a unique collaboration that involves the co-creation of a solution that can impact the healthcare and insurance industries. Unlike traditional collaborations where a startup might deliver a product and then step aside, Zurich and NalaGenetics have adopted a more collaborative approach. Over a 3- to 6-month accelerator phase, both companies worked together in an agile, co-creative process to design a solution that aligns with Zurich’s goals of delivering personalized, preventive care through its life insurance and family takaful products.

During this period, both companies collaborated closely, sharing relevant data, insights, and expertise. They tested different product models, gathered customer feedback, and refined their offerings based on real-world data. The pilot program initially targeted existing Zurich Malaysia customers, offering genetic testing followed by personalized health advice from physicians. This was then expanded to new customers, with a focus on integrating preventive care into Zurich’s life insurance policies.

The co-creation process allows Zurich to respond to the market’s evolving needs, particularly as more customers seek health solutions that go beyond traditional insurance. The feedback from both customers and Zurich agents in Malaysia has been overwhelmingly positive. Agents, who initially approached the program cautiously, were so impressed after trying the service themselves that they became enthusiastic advocates, helping to drive customer interest and engagement.

Championing Personalized Medicine and Creating a New Standard in Healthcare and Insurance

The integration of personalized medicine into insurance is one of the most exciting developments in both industries. Genetic testing is becoming a crucial tool in preventive healthcare, allowing doctors to tailor treatments to individual patients and prevent costly medical conditions before they arise.

As part of their collaboration, Zurich and NalaGenetics aim to make personalized, preventive care a cornerstone of Zurich’s health insurance offerings. The aim is to enhance health outcomes and decrease long-term insurance claims by managing health risks at an early stage.

In practical terms, the program involves offering genetic tests to customers, followed by regular consultations with physicians to discuss the results and make necessary lifestyle adjustments. For example, if a patient’s genetic test reveals they are at high risk for cardiovascular disease, their physician can prescribe preventive measures, such as changes in diet or early medication interventions, to mitigate the risk before it becomes a serious issue.

The Benefits of Co-Creation: Early Results from the Pilot

The benefits of leveraging genetic testing and insights in this co-creation process are already apparent. During the pilot phase, Zurich Malaysia and NalaGenetics tested their product on a group of customers, gathering valuable data to refine their approach. One of the key takeaways was the high level of customer interest in genetic testing—80% of surveyed customers expressed a desire to undergo genetic testing, and 90% were willing to participate in associated health programs.

Customers also appreciated Zurich’s move away from traditional insurance or takaful products toward something more personalized and proactive. During the interview, Kamonlawan Chomchopbun, Product Manager and Market Access Lead at NalaGenetics who works on the ground with the Zurich Malaysia team, shared that even agents are empowered by the solution. The impact of the co-created solution was so immense that the agent shared, “It’s not just about offering coverage anymore—it’s about caring for the customer’s overall well-being.”

Feedback from customers participating in the program revealed that they valued having a deeper understanding of their health risks and felt empowered to take preventive action. In one notable case, a patient with persistent GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) discovered through genetic testing that they had a mild lactose intolerance and a sensitivity to coffee. By making simple adjustments to their diet, the patient’s symptoms improved dramatically within three months, eliminating the need for further doctor visits.

This kind of personalized, preventive approach not only improves patient outcomes but also reduces the likelihood of costly insurance claims, creating a mutually beneficial relationship for both customers and Zurich.

Mastercard launches Pay Local, enabling Asia’s digital wallet providers to process card payments from more than 2 billion Mastercard cardholders


International travelers can now pay like locals at more than 35 million merchants across Asia Pacific

SINGAPORE, Nov. 5, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Ahead of the Singapore FinTech Festival, Mastercard today introduced Mastercard Pay Local, a global service that makes it easy for consumers to make card payments to merchants using local digital wallets. With Mastercard Pay Local, resident cardholders or international travelers can easily link their credit or debit cards to a digital wallet and immediately shop at participating merchants, without needing to set up or top up a prepaid account.  

Leading wallets in Asia Pacific, such as DANA in Indonesia, Touch ‘n Go in Malaysia, Bakong in Cambodia, and LankaPay in Sri Lanka, will use Mastercard Pay Local to facilitate payments for consumers at more than 35 million merchants in the region that accept these wallets. Beyond Asia Pacific, the service is also geared towards regions where digital wallets are widely used for everyday purchases, such as Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East and Africa.

Transforming Healthcare in Asia Pacific: The Impact of Medical Devices

The Asia Pacific (APAC) region, home to 60% of the global population, is emerging as a key market for global medical device companies.[1] This shift is underscored by the potential of the APAC region, which encompasses a diverse array of cultures, languages, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and a healthcare market that has already surpassed Europe to become the second-largest market globally, right behind the United States.[2] Key drivers for this growth include rising income levels, an ageing population, and an increased prevalence of chronic diseases, all contributing to the heightened demand for medical devices.[3] However, the APAC region embodies a spectrum of healthcare systems, ranging from densely populated urban centres with state-of-the-art medical facilities to remote communities facing formidable barriers to access. These disparities in the healthcare space highlight the need for innovative solutions to transform the healthcare delivery system, addressing key issues such as access barriers and shortages of manpower and resources. This is where the crucial role of medical devices comes into play.

Population Dynamics across APAC

By 2050, the number of individuals aged 60 and above in the APAC region is projected to more than double, reaching a staggering 1.3 billion.[4]  This demographic trend brings with it a host of healthcare challenges, including an increased burden of age-related diseases and conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders.[5]

Alongside an ageing population, there is a marked increase in the prevalence of chronic and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, which collectively contribute to 41 million deaths each year, representing approximately 74% of global mortality. [6] In APAC, NCD-related deaths are prominent, with some countries reporting rates as high as 90% of total fatalities.[7] The lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these challenges, severely straining healthcare resources, disrupting routine care services, and revealing critical gaps in preparedness and response capabilities.[8] Healthcare facilities are grappling with issues like overcrowding, reduced physician-to-population ratios, limited medicine availability, and inadequate funding. Projections from the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicate an imminent global deficit by 2030, with Southeast Asia alone expected to account for 40% of this shortfall.[9] For instance, in 2023, Indonesia reported a deficit of 31,481 specialist doctors,[10] while the Philippines anticipates a 25-year timeline to achieve the ideal doctor-patient ratio.[11] These challenges are further compounded by factors such as rapid population growth, lifestyle shifts, urbanization, emigration of healthcare workers, and an ageing healthcare workforce.

Harmonising Healthcare with Medical Device Innovations

Amidst the growing demand for healthcare services, the medical devices sector stands as a burgeoning industry poised to reshape healthcare approaches. Analysts project that, by 2028, the Asian medical devices market will account for more than USD 156 billion in revenue.[12] The next frontier in healthcare innovation will involve an increased focus on the digitalisation of medical devices, thereby enhancing access, convenience, and patient-centred care.

In recent years, we are already seeing more medical devices being used across the healthcare system:

  • Remote monitoring and telemedicine: Medical devices, including wearable sensors, smart watches, remote monitoring devices, and telemedicine platforms, empower healthcare providers to remotely monitor patients’ vital signs, health status, and treatment adherence. This allows caregivers to monitor multiple patients simultaneously despite manpower shortages. For instance, the Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitoring system, available in Singapore and Japan, allows for real-time monitoring, integrated with wearable sensors and a transmitter for the measurement of blood glucose values.
  • Point-of-care testing: Point-of-care testing devices offer rapid and convenient diagnostic capabilities outside of traditional laboratory settings. These devices can be particularly valuable in resource-limited settings or remote areas. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple home-test kits were developed to allow the first round of testing at home. This also helped people adhere to the social distancing norms.
  • Self-management apps: Mobile health (mHealth) apps and devices empower patients to take an active role in managing their health and well-being. These apps enable users to track their exercise, diet, medication adherence, and vital signs, providing valuable insights into their health status and facilitating communication with healthcare providers.
  • Home-based care: Technological advancements have facilitated the development of home medical devices, and enhanced patient care convenience while reducing hospitalization expenses, promoting patient independence, and improving quality of life. Devices such as home infusion pumps, portable oxygen concentrators, and remote monitoring systems empower chronic patients to manage their health outside of traditional healthcare settings. While the accelerated adoption of medical devices can transform the healthcare landscape, a critical challenge lies in enabling healthcare professionals (HCPs) to interpret collected data. This is a common industry issue, where a significant amount of data either falls through the cracks or becomes overwhelming, making it difficult to analyse and utilise effectively. Statistics paint a concerning picture, revealing that 97% of health data produced by hospitals remains unanalysed, and 46% of healthcare leaders view data management as a significant burden.[13] This translates to a vast reservoir of potentially life-saving insights remaining untapped. Hence, addressing the challenges of data interpretation will allow HCPs to unlock the true potential of medical devices and pave the way for personalised healthcare in APAC.

Collaborative Efforts to Propel Medical Devices Growth

In 2023, the region’s medical devices market reached a value of USD 111.93 billion, and projections suggest that it will further grow at a CAGR of 6.8% and reach USD 166.1 billion by 2029.[14] Driving this growth in APAC demands a collaborative approach involving government bodies, healthcare providers, academic institutions, and industry stakeholders.

Regulatory developments play a pivotal role in strengthening the sector’s upward trajectory. Harmonising and streamlining regulatory frameworks are essential to facilitate faster approval and market entry of new medical devices. Regional agreements, like those within ASEAN[15] aim to establish consistent regulations, streamline approval processes, and enhance market access for medical devices across borders.[16] By aligning standards and regulations, regulatory bodies seek to create a more predictable and transparent environment for manufacturers, distributors, and healthcare providers.

Governments should incentivise research and development (R&D) through grants and tax benefits to stimulate local innovation of medical devices. Initiatives like Singapore’s National Health Innovation Centre (NHIC) and South Korea’s National Institute of Health (NIH) fund medical research and support clinical trials, often in collaboration with universities and healthcare companies, enabling efficient validation of new medical devices.[17] Training programs for healthcare professionals on the use of new devices are equally crucial to ensure their effective adoption and utilization. These efforts not only facilitate faster market entry but also ensure that innovations address specific healthcare needs in diverse APAC markets.

Additionally, healthcare distribution facilities are emerging as key growth drivers, streamlining supply chains and enhancing accessibility to medical devices across APAC. Dell Latitude 7350 Laptop In-Depth Review: Thoughtful AI Meets Power Efficiency & Productivity

Dell’s Latitude lineup has been one of the foremost laptop lineups when it comes to business and productivity. It has steadily grown from a chunky, business-oriented laptop into a more sleek, refined laptop with productivity features that broaden its appeal beyond just the business market. The Dell Latitude 7350 Laptop builds on this legacy and brings meaningful updates and features to the Latitude lineup. Of course, being a Latitude 7000 series, it’s also pushing the boundaries a little bit with some of the more premium features from Dell’s flagship XPS laptops.

That said, does slim, sleek and light make a difference? Or does the Dell Latitude 7350 laptop rest on Dell’s laurels? We’re giving you the full breakdown with our in-depth review.

Design

The Dell Latitude 7350 gets a lot of its design cues from the Dell XPS. Its slim form factor and overall design hearken back to the design language of the XPS – albeit a little bit more on the thicker side of things. That said, the adapted design language makes the Latitude look and feel more premium. Dell has also opted to make the Latitude 7350 more petite than its competition with some of the slimmest bezels I’ve seen on a laptop. The build of the laptop isn’t flat either, it’s got a slight taper towards the top lip of the laptop lid. The same lip has a discreet, physical shutter for the camera to prevent digital prying eyes.

The design of the laptop allows it to hold all the relevant ports you’d need while keeping the profile slim and relatively seamless. The slight taper also makes the laptop feel more ergonomic when using it on the go. However, the hallmark of the way the laptop is designed is definitely the placement of the keyboard and trackpad – especially the latter since it’s also larger than the competition. It allows you to avoid weird angles when using the touchpad.

Dell’s decision to use magnesium for the body of the Latitude 7350 makes the device feel premium and adds a layer of durability that is very welcomed for a device you’ll be carrying with you on the go. Not to forget, the laptop is super lightweight or as Dell puts it “Ultralight”. It weighs just a hair under 1kg – coming in at a mere 0.99kg. The lightweight is very welcomed when running around as it also means it’s easy to carry around. I also found myself double and triple checking my bag for the laptop cause I’m too used to a heavier weight.

Hardware

The Dell Latitude 7350 is a laptop built for productivity. Its specifications live up to this to the “T”. In fact, the hardware it comes with seems run-of-the-mill, but Dell’s thoughtful AI integration is what sets it apart.

When it comes to features, the Dell Latitude 7350 hallmark is definitely its weight, but it also comes with another bevvy of features that make it stand out from the crowd. Aside from its magnesium build, Dell has incorporated a multitude of AI-imbued features that leverage the NPU in the Intel Core Ultra processor and also fortify your Dell Latitude 7350 making it more secure and having better performance all with the click of a button.

Thoughtful AI Features Create Secure Work

Like many other Dell laptops, the Latitude 7350 Ultralight is imbued with features that Dell has built in-house. These features leverage Dell’s know-how and the AI capabilities of the processor to bring features that help elevate the user experience and ensure that sensitive data isn’t compromised. Most of these features come with Dell Optimizer which is a piece of software that is available in most of the Dell laptops.

The Dell Optimizer software allows you to optimize the laptop so that it runs at its best. The Dell optimizer helps optimize the system based on your usage behaviour and also optimizes the laptop’s audio so you can get the best out of the laptop. It even monitors the health of your battery ensuring you get the most out of it and optimises battery usage according to your usage.

Aside from that, the best feature in Dell Optimizer has to be the Onlooker detection and Walk Away lock. As the name suggests, Onlooker Detection uses the camera of the Latitude to detect onlookers. When it does, it blurs out the screen preventing prying eyes from reading what’s on screen. This feature is a real boon especially when you’re working in places like cafes or even in public spaces like hospital waiting rooms. It’s so sensitive that even when it comes to showing someone the screen you need to make sure it’s not over your shoulder cause it will blur the screen. I loved it when I was doing work in a public forum in a hotel. However, the same feature can be a little bit unnerving when it says you have an onlooker when you’re alone in a hotel room. Walk Away Lock does exactly that, it locks your computer when you walk away from it preventing anyone from accessing your work and data. It’s also almost instantaneous taking less than 10 seconds to lock Windows as I walked away from the PC.

Collaboration TouchPad & Keyboard

Dell introduced the Collaboration Touchpad with the Latitude 9330 back in 2022. The touchpad has become something of a standard on Dell laptops now; the Dell Latitude 7350 is following suit. The Collaboration TouchPad brings the most used functionalities in commonly used collaborative applications like Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Slack particularly when it comes to video calls. The Collaboration TouchPad gives you buttons for turning on your webcam, sharing your screen, viewing the chat and muting your microphone which comes in handy when using apps like Zoom. The Collaborative Touchpad gives you a visual indication of whether you’re muted as well – a very welcomed feature that helps prevent awkward situations.

Aside from that, the touchpad itself is larger than normal laptops. This comes in really handy when you’re working on the go. You’ll be able to use the touchpad without straining your wrist too much. This came in especially useful when using the laptop in an aeroplane and even on the train during a commute. The added touchpad real estate meant easier manoeuvring even in tight spaces.

The keyboard on the Dell Latitude 7350 is also one of its best features. It has a really nice feel when using it. There’s just enough travel so that using it doesn’t feel mushy and it’s got less feedback making it significantly more comfortable to use over prolonged periods. The keys are also wide enough that my fat, pudgy fingers don’t end up pressing more than one key at a time. It’s also worth noting that the speaker grills on either side also made it more comfortable as my fingers weren’t hanging off the sides and resting on the grills.

Performance

When it comes to performance, the Dell Latitude isn’t a slouch. It performs relatively well all things considered. It could handle day-to-day tasks without batting an eye. Simple word processing and small Excel sheets were a breeze. Even larger Excel sheets and heavier PowerPoint presentations were handled really well. That said, the performance of the laptop did take a little bit of a dip when it came to handling Google Chrome with about 8 tabs open. This was exacerbated by using programs like Rambox.

The performance of the laptop was really strained when it came to doing creative work. Light photo editing and simple visual design were still manageable but when it came to doing heavier tasks like video editing, the laptop would struggle especially with apps like Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. Lighter apps like CapCut didn’t have as hard a time as Adobe and DaVinci but still, it’s a little bit of a task for the laptop.

Of course, being a gamer, I had to use a laptop for the task. It could handle simple older games like Final Fantasy VIII (not remastered), Torchlight and Bastion. I’ll give this a slight caveat just to say that when I say it can handle the game, this doesn’t mean the settings are maxed out. Most of them are in middling or lower settings. It should be abundantly clear that newer games like Diablo III, Baldur’s Gate 3 and the like were an uphill climb for the laptop. Newer games struggle even on the lowest settings. This is clearly a limitation of the Intel Integrated graphics that come with the Core Ultra processor.

Display

It’s a pity though that the Integrated Graphics of the processor is a bottleneck for gaming because the display on the Dell Latitude 7350 is one of the best when it comes to colour reproduction and clarity. The FHD+ resolution seemed to be just high enough for the laptop’s 13.3-inch display. However, it wouldn’t have hurt to have a little bit more resolution – although there would be a point of diminishing returns with the small display.

That said, the display allowed me to do colour grading, video editing, and other graphically intensive work smoothly and accurately. It also shines when it comes to consuming content. The colour depth and colour reproduction allow you to see details in the blacks and darker regions of the content in your videos making it more immersive. This is also complemented by the laptop’s surprisingly good speakers that are able to provide immersive sound with a wide sound stage.

A Laptop for Productivity On-The-Go With Meaningful AI Additions Held Back By a subpar Graphics Processor

All in all, the Dell Latitude 7350 is nearly the perfect productivity package held back by Intel’s Integrated Graphics. We’re not saying this to nitpick. The mere fact that the laptop struggles with games that are over a decade old should indicate that there is a lot of work to be done when it comes to integrated graphics cores. That aside, the Dell Latitude 7350 is built for the rigours of productivity on the go with the integration of thoughtful AI features that allow you to ensure your data is secure even when you’re out and about. The ergonomics of the keyboard and also the build quality of the laptop are small touches that make all the difference when it comes to design and functionality. The display and speakers also make the laptop perfect if you need to unwind. It’s truly a near-perfect package with one big caveat especially if you’re working with graphics and extremely large data sets.

The new SMI Pacific Hub, is the latest addition to the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s regional engagement activities, joining a cohort of five other Hubs and Councils including North America, Africa, China, India, and Greece.  As part of its regional and country approach, the Pacific Hub will provide a forum for CEOs to look more practically at sustainability efforts across industry and finance while exploring how the region’s private sector is actively working with governments to support Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and biodiversity targets in the region.

Marine Mangrove Sanctuary

The Sustainable Markets Initiative announces the Marine Mangrove Sanctuary in collaboration with Rotary International and SpaceX. The sanctuary in Nono’a Saleimoa, Samoa will restore and maintain the mangrove ecosystem to mitigate the onset of sea level rise.  Starlink will enable project leads to record, in real-time, key data points regarding the progress of the project such as: number of mangrove seedlings planted, growth of seedlings, time spent planting and maintaining the site, and general updates from site visits. The project demonstrates the value of remote access connectivity to support underserved and remote communities across the Commonwealth. The SMI’s partnership with Starlink includes a focus on rapidly scaling support for Nature-capital and post-disaster monitoring.

Government Training Programme

The Sustainable Markets Initiative will now offer Commonwealth Member States access to its highly successful Government Training Programme, which has so far had over 800 participants from over 85 countries register worldwide. The programme has convened subject matter experts from across the public and private sectors along with non-governmental organisations to develop climate-based training that can help support government officials (and others) responsible for delivering and developing climate-related projects and the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

SMI Impact Accelerator and High-Level Climate Investment Authority

The SMI also offers support through its Impact Accelerator.  The private sector is ready to mobilize capital, however to date there is a limited pipeline of “investment-ready” projects. The Sustainable Markets Initiative strives to fill this gap by offering end-to-end support for project development, industry partnerships and capacity building.  Recognizing the urgency and complexity of public-private partnerships for transition, we strongly recommend that High-Level Climate Investment Authorities (HCIA) be established to offer an empowered and coordinated docking point that is focused on private sector partnerships and capital mobilization.  The SMI has a range of guidance available on how to best establish these HCIAs.

SMI Nature Risk Tool

The Sustainable Markets Initiative has recently launched its SMI Nature Risk Tool and is now offering it to all Commonwealth Member States.  The SMI Nature Risk Tool recognizes that infrastructure development often leads to habitat loss, biodiversity decline, pollution, and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Powered by AECOM, and using datasets from the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), the SMI Nature Risk Tool enables infrastructure investors and promoters to analyse any piece of land globally, providing expert-reviewed descriptions of the location’s habitat and biomes early in the site selection process.
