Tencent Launches Immersive Digital Experience of Newest World Heritage Site with Gametech

The Beijing Central Axis is now ready for digital visitors from around the world

SHENZHEN, China, July 27, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Tencent (0700.HK) today launched the largest virtual urban historical landscape created to date called Microcosm, an immersive experience that brings Beijing’s Central Axis to life online. The project launch coincides with the addition of the Central Axis to the World Heritage List by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Microcosm, which can be accessed via the Digital Central Axis Weixin Mini Program (云上中轴), offers users an immersive guided tour of the landmark that they can enjoy at their own pace. Guided by avatars, anyone with a smartphone can explore the 3D virtual replica of the heritage site in the Chinese capital in breathtaking detail. Users can explore the Digital Central Axis throughout its history, even areas and scenes that may have been damaged or are no longer visible in real life.

The Mini Program also provides a platform for the Digital Watchman project, an innovative crowdsourced conservation initiative launched in December 2023. By simply scanning QR codes, taking photos and uploading inspection reports through the Mini Program, locals and visitors can become citizen stewards, logging signs of deterioration or damage. Citizen conservation reports make it easier to maintain a large heritage site like the Central Axis.

“Through our digital capabilities and gametech, and with our partners, we are exploring a creative path to bring cultural heritage to life in the digital era. The Digital Central Axis Project exemplifies how digital innovation can be used not only to conserve, but also to revitalize these important cultural monuments,” said Zhan Shu, Head of Digital Culture Lab, Tencent’s Sustainable Social Value Organization.

The Axis is well known inside China but may be less familiar in other parts of the world. It stretches approximately 7.8 kilometers from north to south in the capital city, reflecting Chinese imperial design and urban planning that began in the 13th century. The site includes 15 heritage landmarks such as the Forbidden City, the Bell and Drum Towers, Jingshan Hill, and the Temple of Heaven. Its symmetry and layout reflect a traditional system of order and harmony between humans and nature that has prevailed from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties all the way through to the China of today.

Microcosm took three years to create, using high-definition scanning, modeling, PCG auto-generation, and other game technologies. A sophisticated five-level map mode covers 200km x 200km and includes 300,000 plants and 2.2 million buildings, as well as hills and water features. In all, the virtual space contains over 15 terabytes of 3D data and a total of 10.4 billion facets.

As part of the Digital Central Axis Project, Tencent has also woven the elements of the cultural wonders into many scenarios — including music, videos, animations and even mobile games — for conservation and research purposes. For example, millions of young people have found creative and innovative ways to take part in games licensed with the Beijing Central Axis intellectual property, which in turn has created favorable public sentiment for cultural preservation.

To date, the Digital Central Axis Weixin Mini Program has logged more than 4.5 million visits, 800,000 registered users, and 17,000 Digital Watchman volunteers contributing more than 70,000 inspection photos leading to proactive conservation.

The Digital Central Axis project shows the power of big data, cloud computing, gametech, AI, and knowledge maps in conservation and heritage projects. The technologies can create meaningful experiences, help engage the public, and protect more of the world’s cultural treasures in the digital era.

Adobe Unveils AI-Powered Enhancements in Illustrator and Photoshop

Adobe has unveiled a wave of groundbreaking new features for its flagship applications, Illustrator and Photoshop. These advancements leverage the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to empower designers and photographers with innovative tools that streamline workflows and unlock new creative possibilities.

New in Illustrator: A World of Creative Possibility | Adobe Creative Cloud

The latest updates prioritize AI integration, aiming to enhance efficiency and productivity for users. A key highlight is the introduction of Generative Shape Fill (beta) in Illustrator. This innovative tool utilizes the power of Adobe Firefly, a machine-learning framework, to generate intricate and detailed vector shapes based on user input. Users simply describe the desired shape with text prompts, and Generative Shape Fill automatically delivers a range of options. This eliminates the need for manual creation, saving designers valuable time and effort.

AI-Powered Image Editing

Photoshop also benefits from the inclusion of AI features. The Generate Image tool, powered by Adobe Firefly Image 3, allows users to create entirely new images based on text descriptions. This opens doors for creative exploration and rapid prototyping, enabling designers to visualize ideas more quickly and efficiently.

Enhanced Selection and Adjustment Tools

The updates extend beyond AI. Both Illustrator and Photoshop boast improvements to existing tools. Illustrator features enhanced selection tools for more precise object manipulation. Photoshop gains a new Adjustment Brush tool, providing users with greater control over adjustments applied to specific areas of an image. These refinements streamline the editing process and allow for more nuanced creativity.

Empowering Creators with Accessibility

Accessibility remains a core focus for Adobe. The new features are designed to be user-friendly and cater to a diverse range of skill levels. Program Akar, a new initiative by Payments Network Malaysia (PayNet) powered by AWS re/Start, was also announced alongside the Adobe updates. This program aims to equip Malaysians with essential cloud computing skills, fostering a future workforce prepared to utilize these cutting-edge design tools.

The development of these AI-powered features reflects Adobe’s commitment to collaboration. Generative Shape Fill in Illustrator is powered by the latest Firefly Vector Model, highlighting teamwork between Adobe’s research and development teams. Program Akar, meanwhile, exemplifies a successful industry partnership between PayNet, AWS, and WEPS, ensuring accessible training for aspiring designers.

Google Reverses Course: Third-Party Cookies to Remain in Chrome

In a surprising turn of events, Google has announced it will not be phasing out third-party cookies in its Chrome browser as previously planned. This decision comes after years of back-and-forth discussions and industry concerns about the potential impact on online advertising.

For those unfamiliar, third-party cookies are small data files placed on your browser by websites you visit. These cookies track your browsing activity across different sites, allowing advertisers to build profiles of your interests and target you with personalized ads. Privacy advocates have long criticized third-party cookies for being intrusive and a violation of user privacy.

In 2019, Google introduced its Privacy Sandbox initiative, aiming to develop alternative methods for interest-based advertising without compromising user privacy. Initially, Google planned to phase out third-party cookies entirely by 2022. This deadline was subsequently pushed back to late 2024 due to technical challenges and industry feedback.

The potential removal of third-party cookies caused significant anxiety within the advertising and publishing industries. Many businesses rely on these cookies for targeted advertising, a major source of revenue. Concerns were raised regarding the effectiveness of alternative methods proposed by Google and the potential for a decline in ad revenue for publishers.

Google’s decision to maintain third-party cookies signifies a shift in its approach. In a blog post on July 22nd, 2024, Anthony Chavez, vice president of Google’s Privacy Sandbox initiative, stated, “We are proposing an updated approach that elevates user choice.” While details remain scarce, this suggests Google will focus on user control over how their data is used for advertising purposes.

While Google’s reversal on third-party cookies provides some clarity for advertisers and publishers, questions remain. The specific features of the “updated approach” emphasizing user choice have yet to be unveiled. It’s unclear how this new approach will balance user privacy with the needs of the advertising industry. Additionally, it’s uncertain whether regulatory scrutiny from governments will impact this decision.

For now, users can expect to continue seeing targeted ads based on their browsing activity. However, it’s possible that Google will introduce new features in Chrome that allow users more control over how their data is used. This could potentially involve enhanced settings for managing cookies or opting out of personalized advertising entirely.

The debate surrounding third-party cookies has highlighted the ongoing tension between user privacy and targeted advertising. While Google’s decision provides a temporary reprieve, the search for a more privacy-focused approach to online advertising will likely continue. The development and adoption of robust alternatives to third-party cookies will be crucial for shaping the future of the online advertising landscape.

Sonos Apologizes for Flawed App Update, Promises Bi-Weekly Fixes

Sonos, the popular wireless audio brand, has acknowledged a major misstep with its recent app update. In a blog post on July 25th, 2024, CEO Patrick Spence offered a sincere apology to customers and outlined a roadmap for addressing the app’s numerous problems.

Sonos App
Source: Sonos

The update rolled out in May 2024, was met with widespread criticism from users who experienced a range of issues. These criticisms are well documented, highlighted by various news outlets. These problems significantly hampered the user experience, making it difficult for customers to control their Sonos sound systems.

In his blog post, Spence acknowledged the severity of the situation. He stated, “We know that too many of you have experienced significant problems with our new app… There isn’t an employee at Sonos who isn’t pained by having let you down.” This candid admission reflects Sonos’ recognition of the negative impact the update had on its customer base.

A Bi-Weekly Roadmap to Recovery

Spence went on to detail a plan for fixing the app. Central to this plan is a commitment to bi-weekly software updates. Each update will include detailed notes outlining bug fixes and upcoming features. This transparent approach aims to keep users informed of progress and demonstrate a commitment to resolving the issues as quickly as possible.

Sonos App 2
Source: Sonos

While specific dates were not provided, Spence mentioned several key features slated for future updates. These include:

  • Alarm functionality (targeted for September)
  • Edit mode for playlists and queues (expected in September or October)

The inclusion of alarms is a welcome addition, addressing a significant omission in the current app. The ability to edit playlists and queues is another highly requested feature, allowing users greater control over their listening experience.

Sonos understands that regaining user trust is crucial. They are offering a dedicated email address (ceo@sonos.com) for customers to directly communicate their concerns to Spence himself. This demonstrates a commitment to open communication and a desire to address user feedback.

The Sonos app fiasco serves as a cautionary tale for tech companies. Pushing out major updates without thorough testing can damage customer relationships and brand reputation. Sonos’ swift apology and commitment to fixes are positive steps towards recovery. However, only time will tell if they can successfully navigate this challenge and regain the trust of their user base.

Whether Sonos can fully redeem itself will hinge on the effectiveness of their bi-weekly updates. Delivering consistent improvements and restoring core functionalities will be key to winning back frustrated customers. This situation serves as a reminder for tech companies to prioritize user experience and maintain open communication with their customers.

RHB Bank Visa Cards Get Google Pay Compatibility

Good news for RHB Bank customers! Thanks to the bank’s integration with Google Pay, you can now ditch your physical wallet for everyday transactions. This exciting announcement allows users to make secure and convenient contactless payments through their Android smartphones using their RHB Visa debit and credit cards.

Previously, RHB customers were left out of the Google Pay party, with the platform only supporting a limited number of Malaysian banks. However, with this recent integration, RHB joins the ranks of other major financial institutions like Maybank, Public Bank, and CIMB, offering its customers a seamless mobile payment experience.

Unlocking Convenience with Google Pay

Adding your RHB Visa card to Google Pay is a straightforward process. Simply open the Google Wallet app on your Android phone and navigate to the “Add Card” section. You can either scan your card using your phone’s camera or manually enter the details. Once your card is verified, you’re ready to start making contactless payments at any terminal displaying the Google Pay or contactless payment symbol.

Security remains a top concern for mobile payments. Google Pay utilizes multiple layers of security to ensure your financial information is protected. When you make a payment, a unique encrypted token is generated instead of your actual card number, minimizing the risk of fraud in case of data breaches. Additionally, Google Pay leverages your phone’s security features, such as fingerprint verification or PIN, for added peace of mind.

Benefits Beyond Convenience

The integration with Google Pay offers several advantages for RHB customers:

  • Faster Transactions: Forget fiddling with cash or swiping your card. Google Pay allows for swift and hassle-free payments, keeping you moving through your day.
  • Enhanced Security: As mentioned earlier, Google Pay employs robust security measures to protect your financial information.
  • Improved Tracking and Management: View your transaction history and manage your spending directly within the Google Wallet app.
  • Rewards Integration: While not explicitly mentioned, some banks allow users to earn rewards points when making purchases through Google Pay. It’s worth checking with RHB to see if such benefits apply.

What About Other Card Types?

While the current integration focuses on RHB Visa cards, there’s no information on whether other card networks like Mastercard will be supported in the future. It’s advisable to keep an eye on RHB’s official announcements for any updates regarding additional card network compatibility.

TM & Nxera Break Ground on State-of-the-Art Data Centre Campus in Johor

Telekom Malaysia (TM) and Nxera, the regional data centre arm of Singtel’s Digital InfraCo unit, have marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking ceremony for their joint venture data centre campus in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. This state-of-the-art facility, designed to be sustainable, hyper-connected, and AI-ready, underscores Malaysia’s ambition to become a regional digital hub.

The 64MW data centre campus is a strategic investment aimed at bolstering Malaysia’s digital infrastructure and driving economic growth. By positioning Johor as a key digital hub, the project aligns with the government’s vision of transforming the nation into a centre for industrial growth, AI development, and innovation.

This collaboration between TM and Nxera marks the strengthening collaborative partnership between Malaysia and Singapore. Both Southeast Asian nations are working together to create a robust digital ecosystem. The data centre campus is expected to catalyze attracting high-tech and high-value content companies to the region, fostering a vibrant business environment.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Malaysia’s Minister of Digital, YB Gobind Singh Deo said, “This investment by TM and Nxera reinforces Malaysia’s position as
the digital hub in Southeast Asia, further advancing the nation’s economic growth. Based on advance estimates, Malaysia’s economy expanded 5.8% in the second quarter of 2024, and such investments are in line with projections that Malaysia’s digital economy will contribute 25.5% to the nation’s GDP by the end of the year. The relationship between TM and Nxera expands to Malaysia and Singapore, with both nations being a good case study of a productive working partnership between two ASEAN member states.”

A key focus of the project is sustainability. The data centre campus will be designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, incorporating energy and water-efficient solutions. Additionally, the use of liquid cooling technology will enable the facility to handle high-power density AI workloads efficiently.

To support the growing demand for digital connectivity, the joint venture plans to expand submarine cable connectivity, further strengthening Malaysia’s position as a regional digital hub. The strategic location of the data centre campus, just 16 kilometres from Singapore, will facilitate seamless cross-border data transfer and collaboration.

Beyond infrastructure development, TM and Nxera are committed to nurturing local talent. The partnership aims to create employment opportunities within the data centre industry and foster collaboration between universities in Singapore and Malaysia to develop specialized data centre curriculums. This investment in human capital will contribute to Malaysia’s long-term digital transformation goals.

The data centre campus is scheduled to commence commercial operations in 2026. With its focus on sustainability, AI readiness, and connectivity, this project is set to become a cornerstone of Malaysia’s digital infrastructure and a catalyst for economic growth.

Uplifting pharmacists’ role in primary care and positioning pharmacies as essential care destinations in local communities

CAMBERWELL, Australia, July 25, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — MedAdvisor Solutions and the Australasian College of Pharmacy today announced the launch of the MedAdvisor software training – Queensland Community Pharmacy Scope of Practice Pilot. The training, conducted by MedAdvisor Solutions trained pharmacy managers, provides pharmacists with the essential training for the Queensland (QLD) Scope of Practice Pilot ensuring pharmacists are equipped to manage the conditions and services included in the Pilot.

The software training is continuing professional development (CPD) accredited and focuses on accessing the MedAdvisor Solutions platform to manage user accounts, complete patient medication details, message clinicians, and use the Queensland Scope of Practice forms when prescribing, and setting booking availability. By participating in the Pilot pharmacists will enhance their ability to improve medication management and healthcare delivery for patients across Australia.

“We are excited to take another step forward in supporting Australian pharmacists by giving them the ability to expand their scope of practice,” said Wayne Marinoff, MedAdvisor Solutions President ANZ. “The Pilot represents a significant step towards enabling pharmacists to practise at the top of their scope. In doing so, we are moving towards a future where pharmacists operate outside the dispensary and offer more comprehensive healthcare solutions for patients all over the country, while leveraging technology to support better health outcomes.”

MedAdvisor Solutions is the preferred software partner for the delivery of expanded scope of practice across community pharmacies in Australia, helping to integrate the pharmacist as a key stakeholder in primary patient care and positioning pharmacies as primary healthcare locations in local communities.

Today’s announcement builds upon MedAdvisor Solution’s commitment to empower pharmacies with the tools and resources needed to enhance patient care, streamline pharmacy operations, and meet the evolving healthcare needs of our communities. The company is dedicated to supporting Australian pharmacies in delivering a broader range of healthcare services and today’s training initiative is just one component of the broader efforts.
