Huawei announces plans for additional developer support and new HMS capabilities at HDC 2021

Latest HMS Core updates will help global developers to build an ecosystem for the intelligent world

DONGGUAN, China, Oct. 23, 2021 — Today at its annual Huawei Developer Conference 2021 (HDC 2021), Huawei announced plans to enhance developer support with updates to its Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) capabilities. The updated tools on offer will empower developers to create improved consumer experiences and offer a choice of even better, more competitive services to users.

As part of the keynote delivered by Zhang Ping‘an, President of the Consumer Cloud Service, Huawei Consumer Business Group, CEO of Huawei Cloud BU, titled "Together to Build a New HMS Ecosystem", he shared that there are now 5.1 million global developers registered with HMS who have integrated over 173,000 applications with HMS Core. HMS now houses over 580 million monthly active users with over 1 billion devices connected. He also revealed the latest HMS Core 6 kits and updates to HMS’ five core engine services to help developers meet the growing need for intelligent app functions.

"Innovation is key to building ecosystems of the future and developers are at the core of it. Huawei hopes to bring together both its open and innovative capabilities, as well as the wonderful minds of developers, to accelerate our journey towards the interconnected, all-scenario future," said Zhang Ping‘an.

HMS capabilities continue to develop at lightning speed with global developers’ support

In 2018 when AppGallery and HUAWEI Music were first available overseas, HMS only had 560,000 registered developers globally. With HMS Core 4 being made available in 2019 as Huawei announced its plan to build a global mobile ecosystem, 1.3 million developers joined hands with HMS and made use of its 14 core capabilities. By 2020, HMS Core 5 brought about 56 capabilities across 7 categories, as well as five core engine services to 2.3 million registered developers globally. Now, the HMS ecosystem continues to have a firm standing as the third largest mobile ecosystem in the world.

In the first three quarters of this year, AppGallery distributed over 332.2 billion applications globally to Huawei’s 730 million end users – a 13% increase year-on-year. Quick Apps distribution also exceeded 11.5 billion, representing an 188% increase year-on-year.

Cross platform capability of HMS Core 6 empowers developers to enhance their apps

HMS Core 6 has announced several new kits for developers to help them to create more competitive functions for their apps following its launch in July. It offers a total of 69 Kits and 21,738 APIs. Compared to HMS Core 5, the latest release features 13 cross-operating systems open capabilities and 8,747 new APIs.

The AV Pipeline Kit, 3D Modelling Kit, Video Editor Kit, Audio Editor Kit and 5G Modem Kit are among some of the recently launched Kits available to developers, supporting those in the media, graphics, artificial intelligence (AI), copyright protection and system domains. Huawei also upgraded the existing services, such as Computer Graphics Kit and Network Kit, to meet the growing need for intelligent app functions and further empower its partners.

In the media domain, HMS Core 6 opens up 11 capabilities in total, adding new video and audio editing capabilities. Video Editor Kit is a one-stop toolkit that can be easily integrated into an app, equipping it with versatile video editing functions like video import/export, editing, rendering, and media resource management. Its powerful, intuitive, and compatible APIs let developers easily create a video editing app for diverse scenarios. Audio Editor Kit provides a wide range of audio editing capabilities, including audio source separation, spatial audio, voice changer, noise reduction, and sound effect. This serves as a one-stop solution for developers to create audio-related functions in their apps at a lower cost with ease.

In the graphics domain, HMS Core 6 has added or enhanced 7 open capabilities, with the 3D Modelling Kit being the highlight. This AI-based kit supports one-click photo collection and automatic 3D model generation, which increases model production efficiency with minimal professional experience required. Additionally, the Computer Graphics Kit has debuted the "volumetric fog" rendering technique. This new graphics feature uses the real-time ray tracing feature of Scene Kit to make the dynamic reflection of mobile game objects more realistic. The AR Engine environment light tracking supports real-time Ambient light to enhance the shadowing fog effects, something especially useful for cyberpunk-style games.

For AI, Huawei introduced SignPal Kit. This kit converts text into sign language gestures and facial expressions in real time with over 90% accuracy, benefiting those with hearing loss and making communication barrier-free for them.

The full range of HMS Core capabilities empowers developers to create quality apps with its intelligence, contextual and scenario-based solutions across multiple smart devices including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, wearables and audio products. These open capabilities can also be used to create apps running on Android, HarmonyOS and iOS by using cross-platform development frameworks such as React Native and Cordova.

Updates to HMS core engine services encourage intelligent app functions

To meet the growing demand of its users and developers, and to continue to push the boundaries of intelligent app functions, Huawei announced new updates to its HMS Core engine services through Huawei Cloud’s aPaaS service.

Zhang Ping‘an added, "Our goal is to update these core engines into cloud services to better serve global developers."

Petal Search and Petal Maps Platform will both receive updates over the coming months and will be available to developers as a cloud service, demonstrating the commitment to providing developers with the most innovative tools.

Huawei has brought state of the art updates to its well-loved Petal Search; Petal Search 2.0 will be the next-generation AI multi-modal search engine, offering an innovative search experience in over 20 different industries including news, videos, shopping, flights, local businesses and more. As well as supporting over 70 languages, Petal Search is available in 170 countries across the world.

With Search as a Service, Huawei fully opens Petal Search capabilities through the device-side SDK and cloud-side APIs, enabling ecosystem partners to quickly provide the optimal mobile app search experience. With an average of 8 billion searches per day, Petal Search allows partners to efficiently distribute content to users through Huawei’s proprietary UniBox management platform.

Petal Maps is another example of Huawei technology helping developers to meet the high standards of Huawei users. Today’s conference reflected on how Petal Maps has collected more than 260 million pieces of POI information (up from 180 million) and 690 million addresses (up from 470 million), assisting developers to meet the positioning requirements across new scenarios. Available in over 140 countries and regions, Petal Maps was awarded with the Red Dot Design Award for its interactive experience and now has an estimated 10 million cumulative users.

Petal Maps’ upgrade will see the platform equipped with even more capabilities, including high-precision positioning, topographic map display, diversified map interactive experiences, in-depth data search, high-quality lane-level guidance and Map Studio. To make the platform even better for developers, Petal Maps Platform included flyTo to its map display so developers can customize their map requires for users to enjoy a more realistic and immersive search experience.  Map Studio is now available for overseas developers so that they can customise maps with custom templates and style editor tools. The platform is also offering new and improved privacy features, with Huawei committed to protecting its users’ data.

Today’s annual HDC 2021 gave Huawei the chance to re-establish commitment to its developers, showing the adaptations it can make to ensure its services remain innovative and exciting.

AppGallery Commits to Providing Full-Spectrum Support, Expansion Opportunities, and Innovative Tools to Gaming Developers

SHENZHEN, China, Oct. 23, 2021 — Today at its annual Huawei Developer Conference 2021 (HDC 2021), Huawei reaffirmed its commitment to gaming developers in driving innovation and business expansion, offering new technologies to create unique gaming experiences.

Huawei Developer Conference 2021 (Together) is back for 2021!
Huawei Developer Conference 2021 (Together) is back for 2021!

Alexandre Salem, Global Director, Global Partnerships & Eco-Development Business Department at Huawei, shared the prominent gaming trends for developers, as well as the opportunities that AppGallery can provide to fuel their success.

"The pandemic changed the way people view gaming as a mainstream form of entertainment, resulting in a growing momentum of mobile gaming," said Alexandre. "We want developers to help fuel this growth."

Alex discussed how gaming turned into a US$175 billion industry in 2020, with mobile gaming accelerating the fastest. Accounting for 48% of gaming revenue in 2020, it’s up 13% from 2019.

Empowering developers for unique gaming experiences

AppGallery commits to providing gaming developers with the capabilities, support, and opportunities they need to succeed in an increasingly competitive environment. Alex highlighted four key pillars that provide attractive value propositions for developers with AppGallery – scale, speed, discoverability, and monetisation, including availability for high-touch support.

AppGallery possesses extensive distribution capabilities to over 560 million monthly active users, providing speed through Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) integration and with easy-to-use tools to assist in development and publication.

Leading mobile game developer Gameloft, for example, worked with AppGallery to launch over 11 games, creating a console-like gaming experience that led to a 70% increase in downloads in the first three months following launch.

Supporting developers in market expansion

AppGallery offers developers the resources to increase discoverability and develop monetisation strategies through services such as AppGallery, Petal Search, Petal Maps, and HUAWEI Ads. AppGallery provides support in over 170 countries and regions, 6 HMS regional centres, and tailored marketing for over 5.1 million registered developers.

Playrix, developer of all-time hits such as Gardenscapes and Homescapes, partnered with AppGallery for its series of game launches and received full end-to-end support, including implementation of HMS Core Kits and promotions through Huawei Ads.

With over 10 years of distribution experience in China, AppGallery is also well-placed to help international developers unlock business opportunities in the expanding Chinese market.

"One of our underlying priorities is to offer more choice of domestic and global apps to Chinese consumers," shared Alex. "Our extensive user base in China and in-depth understanding of the domestic app marketplace and user characteristics means we can help international developers identify challenges accurately and efficiently."

About AppGallery

AppGallery is an innovative ecosystem that allows developers to create unique experiences for consumers. Its HMS Core allows apps to integrate across different devices, delivering a smoother experience – part of the wider "1+8+N" strategy at Huawei.

Sony’s ALPHA 7 IV (α7 IV) Redefines the ‘Basic’ Necessities of a Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera

The Sony ALPHA 7, or rather the α7 marks Sony’s first foray into the high-end camera market with a full-frame DSLR that is a lot smaller and lighter than regular DSLR devices. While it is smaller and lighter than the regular full-frame body, it comes with its own sets of limitations, one of them is battery life. Ergonomics for the first α7 was not the best either with Sony placing more focus on making the camera as compact as possible. Because there is less space on the body for buttons, there is only so much Sony can do to give users a sense of finer control with physical knob and buttons.

The ALPHA 7 platform is a popular choice among content creators though. The third iteration was everything you could ever need from a mirrorless camera. It had sophisticated Autofocus system that was a lot more reliable than before, it had features that reduces the rolling shutter effect that plagued previous Sony α7 cameras, it was also bigger than the first iteration with better ergonomics and much longer battery life.

Sony just announced a replacement model though, its fourth iteration of the ‘Basic’ full-frame mirrorless camera. If you know Sony’s existing line-up of ALPHA 7 cameras though, you will not call them ‘basic’. The new one is even better.

The New ‘Basic’

Upgraded image size A7IV landscape 2000x700
Source: Sony

The ALPHA 7 IV, as they know it, is Sony’s interpretation to what the new ‘basic’ standard is for an entry-level full-frame camera. Apparently ‘basic’ means 33-Megapixel on the Exmor R CMOS full-frame sensor. That 33-Megapixel sensor packs sensitivity of up to ISO 204800 at its highest and ISO 50 at its lowest for 15-stops in dynamic range. That should mean that the Sony ALPHA 7 IV is an admirable performer in low-light conditions.

BIONZ XR Advantage

e9efa94e526e695a7381439b0a1485aa

The impressive new sensor is assisted by a Sony’s latest BIONZ XR imaging chip, the same one you find on Sony’s range topping ALPHA 1 mirrorless camera. It allows the Sony ALPHA 7 IV to shoot at up to 10fps with AF/AE tracking. Thanks to BIONZ XR as well the camera has up to 759 phase-detection Autofocus (AF) points that covers up to 94% of the image area and tracks subjects in Real-Time Tracking as accurately as you can get cameras to track subjects. Of course, there is Real-time Eye AF function as well that now tracks birds and animal eyes in both photo and movie modes.

The Hybrid Cinematic and Still Shooter

Source: Sony

They call this a hybrid camera, a still and movie camera packed in one compact body. The ALPHA 7 IV now has S-Cinetone colour profile, something that was only reserved for Sony’s very famous Cinema cameras. That means you now get 10-bit 4:2:2 colour sampling for even better colours than before. It records at up to 4K 60 fps in Super 35mm mode, and up to 4K 30fps with 7K oversampling in full-frame mode. For the first time ever as well, the Sony ALPHA 7 IV features a new Focus Map that helps you with finding the right focus point while shooting videos. It also now features a Breathing Compensation feature to eliminate focus breathing and maintain a smooth, consistent focus change. You can turn off that feature too in case you want some focus breathing for creative contexts.

You still get Sony’s very famous 5-axis stabiliser built into the body of the compact mirrorless. The stabiliser allows for the camera to have up to 5.5 steps in shutter speed advantage. At the same time, the viewfinder is an even higher resolution one as well with 3.68 million dots compared to the ALPHA 7 III. For videos, content creators will appreciate the 3.0-inch vari-angle display.

  • 74e27e2105e07fcc8f040fd192de6c20
  • b6d820f242d6670cdb7ea35fc56678ae

On its body as well, the Sony ALPHA 7 IV features a clever dual layer mode dial to allow you to quickly switch from pure photo mode to movie recording mode, and S& Q mode. The top layer is now reserved to Auto/P/A/S/M and Memory Recall mode. It records to either a CFexpress Type A card, or a regular SDXC card too for ultimate convenience in recording medium.

Better Workflow

Source: Sony

The new camera is also much easier to work with than before. It now has 5GHz Wi-Fi for super-fast data transfers between the camera and your smartphone via Imaging Edge Mobile. You can even use Bluetooth for remote access this time. You can now use the Sony ALPHA 7 IV seamlessly with your PC as well as a Live Stream camera or use the PC as a remote. All these is done without using an additional software now and simply by connecting the ALPHA 7 IV via USB Type-C cable. In that case you can even make video calls with up to 4K 15p resolution, or even use the ALPHA 7 IV as an audio interface.

Pricing and Availability

Sony’s ALPHA 7 IV will be available in December 2021 onward. It will retail for about EUR€ 2,800 for its body only. If you opt for an ALPHA 7 IV with a kit lens, it will set you back EUR€ 3,000. It is not a bad kit lens though; it is a 28-70mm (SEL2870) lens. We can only speculate its pricing too at this point. More information on the Sony ALPHA 7 IV (α7 IV) can be found on Sony’s website.

CGTN: Yellow River: A Chinese tale of ecological protection, high-quality development

BEIJING, Oct. 22, 2021 — Deemed China’s "Mother River" and "the cradle of Chinese civilization," the Yellow River basin has seen remarkable improvements in its ecological environment over the last few years as the Chinese government attaches increasing importance to the conservation of China’s second-longest watercourse.

Hailing the Yellow River’s importance as an ecological barrier, an economic zone and a cultural heritage site in China, Chinese President Xi Jinping has reiterated efforts to promote its ecological protection and high-quality development.

On Wednesday, President Xi inspected the estuary of the Yellow River in the city of Dongying, east China’s Shandong Province. He visited a dock at the estuary, an ecological monitoring center and a national-level nature reserve of the Yellow River Delta.

National strategy

"The protection of the Yellow River is critical to the great rejuvenation and sustainable development of the Chinese nation," President Xi said. This explains why China has set the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River basin as a major national strategy.

Starting from Qinghai Province, the Yellow River runs through nine provinces and autonomous regions before emptying itself into the Bohai Sea in Shandong.

As an "ecological corridor," the Yellow River, linking the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Loess Plateau and plains in northern China with severe water scarcity, plays an important role in improving the ecological environment, combating desertification and providing water supply.

The 5,464-kilometer-long waterway feeds about 12 percent of China’s population, irrigates some 15 percent of the arable land, supports 14 percent of the national GDP, and supplies water to more than 60 cities.

Since the 18th Communist Party of China (CPC) National Congress, the Chinese president has visited all of the basin’s provinces and autonomous regions, sharing his concerns about China’s "Mother River." In less than a year from August 2019 to June 2020 alone, he inspected the Yellow River basin four times.

What are the challenges?

President Xi pointed out difficulties and problems in protecting the Yellow River during his inspection tours, such as the fragile ecological environment, the severe condition of water resources preservation and the need to improve development quality.

According to Xi, the peace of the Yellow River is significant to the stability of China. Although the river has not seen major dangers for many years, Xi has repeatedly told the nation not to relax its vigilance.

The river’s natural and geological conditions have led to frequent flooding since ancient times. Over the past 2,500 years, the Yellow River has broken its dikes more than 1,500 times and made 26 major changes in its course on the lower reaches.

Still, busy industrial activities along the Yellow River once put it on the map as one of the world’s most polluted rivers about 10 years ago, which also resulted in ecological degradation.

Turning a blueprint into practice

To deal with major challenges facing the Yellow River basin, the central government and the local governments along the river have taken a series of measures, exemplifying how a national strategy is transforming from a blueprint into concrete practice while showing China’s determination to purse high-quality development.

Over the past 70 years, China has carried out four large-scale embankment projects, built water conservancy projects, implemented two phases of flood control projects on the lower reaches of the waterway and completed the standard levee construction. By 2019, the accumulated amount of silt and sand into the Yellow River has been reduced by nearly 30 billion tonnes and the sediment of the downstream river has been reduced by 11.2 billion tonnes.

High-quality development of the Yellow River basin started with adjustment and transformation of old industrial cities on the upper stream, developing modern agriculture in major grain-producing regions as well as exploring ways to help the impoverished residents along the riversides.

The country has also built more than 400 wetland nature reserves and national parks in the basin. The Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve, the one President Xi visited on Wednesday, is one of the examples.

The Reserve spanning about 153,000 hectares, with wetlands making up over 70 percent of its total area, is an important wintering and stopover site for migratory birds, including oriental storks, an endangered bird species.

Earlier in October, China released an outline for the Yellow River Basin’s protection and development through 2030, serving as a guide for policymaking and engineering project planning in the basin to address challenges. The country is also speeding up its legislation to advance ecological conservation and high-quality development in the Yellow River basin.

Industry Experts Gary Gruver and David Farley Partner to Help Organizations Learn How to Improve Digital Transformations

New computer-based training program from Gruver and Farley teaches software organizations how to address their own unique challenges instead of copying what others have done

SUN VALLEY, Idaho, Oct. 21, 2021 — Today, Gary Gruver (https://garygruver.com/), author and president of Gruver Consulting, announces the "Engineering the Digital Transformation Training and Certification" (EDT) program. EDT is a digital, self-paced training program for teaching software leaders and practitioners how to guide their own approach to continuous improvement. The goal is to help as many people as possible reduce the barriers to organizational change by making waste and inefficiencies visible.

As part of the new program, Gruver has partnered with Dave Farley, co-author of "Continuous Delivery," to supply trainees with key software design patterns and an understanding of how to avoid common mistakes along the way. This curated, wiki-style content library is based on Farley’s breadth of knowledge and decades of experience.

Join the Engineering the Digital Transformation Training and Certification Program at https://www.engineeringthedigitaltransformation.com/

The EDT training program leverages certain principles from the manufacturing industry that have proven to deliver dramatic results. Instead of creating complex frameworks designed to solve someone else’s problem, which manufacturing organizations eventually realized didn’t work, EDT focuses on creating a systematic approach to continuous improvement. This approach leverages some of what was done in manufacturing but is modified to address the unique characteristics and capabilities of software.

"This is not a complex methodology to be implemented based on what practices worked for another team or organization," said Gruver. "Additionally, to help overcome the resistance to change, we help people learn how to understand and address their own unique challenges instead of telling them what to do. By focusing on providing visibility into inefficiencies, it enables teams to use that insight to align on the improvements they are most passionate about addressing. Then, to ensure success, we help people transition from principles to implementation recommendations based on David’s years of experience."

Organizations can’t replicate exactly what others are doing as transformation journeys aren’t a "one size fits all" approach. "Every company is on a different journey, in a different time and place. Teams need to learn how to do this themselves by analyzing their own unique problems," explained Gruver. "If they’re not their own ideas, they are less likely to embrace new ways of working. People need to be empowered to create improvement plans and take ownership of the process. And, when software practitioners and leaders start on the continuous improvement path, they also need design patterns to avoid common mistakes along the way. It helps them avoid struggles that hamper motivation and progress."

"Gary and I are at the point in our careers where we want to help as many people as possible throughout the transformation process with training we believe helps address unique challenges of the organization," said Dave Farley, founder and director of Continuous Delivery Ltd. "Instead of providing expensive hands-on consulting to a limited number of clients, we realized if we could capture our experiences in computer-based training it would enable us to help a lot more organizations and it would be much cheaper for the clients."

Engineering the Digital Transformation Training Offerings

White Belt
There are two online White Belt Certification courses — one for leaders ($250) and one for practitioners ($200). Both versions provide an approach that enables people to quickly align on their specific priorities for driving improvements. The white belt helps participants understand how to take a systematic approach to continuous improvement and identify the best opportunities for improvement. This computer-based training program can easily integrate with learning management systems, and be used across a large organization quickly and efficiently, motivating people to further complete Green and Black Belt Certifications.

One of the biggest challenges with any transformation is getting alignment across the leadership team. Global 2000 companies have used the white belt training with executives to make their issues visible so they can agree on improvement plans. Gruver believes this step is so important to any successful transformation that he is willing to provide a free prototype of the training to any organization that can commit. The requirements are to provide a lead to run the training and make their company-specific issues visible, and get an executive team committed to completing the training.  If interested, visit: https://www.engineeringthedigitaltransformation.com/prototype/.

Green Belt
Green Belt Certification is designed for leaders and practitioners to be able to apply White Belt training principles in their own organization. After the Green Belt training, people can help their organization eliminate waste and inefficiencies with support from David Farley. This important step helps people to document and share the impact of their improvement project where the development and delivery process is made visible, the biggest sources of waste are identified, and a change to remove said waste is implemented.

Black Belt
There are two types of Black Belt Certifications. First, there is a certification that ensures that people proficient in White Belt principles can certify their own Green Belts, enabling companies to be more self-sufficient. Second is to recognize larger and longer continuous improvement projects that can last years instead of months, and are projects that are of interest once the Green Belt Certification is completed.
