Cogent Deploys PoP in HostDime’s Guadalajara Mexico Data Center

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, May 28, 2021 — HostDime, a pioneer in global edge data center infrastructure, has announced that Cogent Communications, one of the top five backbone networks in the world, has deployed a Point of Presence (PoP) in HostDime’s Tier III data center in Guadalajara, Mexico. Cogent’s large global network footprint brings enhanced global connectivity options to HostDime’s Mexico clients and expands Cogent’s on-net network presence in Mexico.

Cogent is a multinational, Tier-1 facilities-based ISP that has built one of the largest and highest capacity IP networks in existence, with 210+ markets in 48 countries around the world.

The addition of Cogent bolsters HostDime’s lineup of multiple diverse connections from leading bandwidth providers, carriers, and exchanges that run into their Mexico data center facility. The carriers in the demarc meet-me/PoP room can link straight to the equipment racks from the source, avoiding all other network switches; this provides added redundancy, lower latency in Mexico, and the flexibility to switch carriers within the facility. Cogent has an extensive peering and inter-connectivity with all local major Mexico telecom providers to achieve this high-performance routing within Mexico to reach 90% of all end-users and enterprises at lightning speeds.

Guadalajara, the second-largest metropolitan area in Mexico, is leading the charge of interconnectivity throughout the country. HostDime’s edge data center in Guadalajara was constructed with the purpose of delivering reliable and scalable data center infrastructure services to Mexico at the lowest possible latency.

"We’re proud and honored to welcome Cogent on-net into our Guadalajara, Mexico data center. Cogent’s superior global network architecture and high interconnectivity in Mexico allows us to offer our clients exceptional connectivity at an unbeatable price. We look forward to continuing to expand this strategic partnership with Cogent across our entire fleet of global data centers," says Manny Vivar, HostDime’s Chief Executive Officer & President of Global Operations.

"We are pleased to be able to provide Internet services to HostDime’s customers in Guadalajara," said Vincent Teissier, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at Cogent Communications. "Reliable and scalable Internet connectivity will help ensure these companies can reach their customers across Mexico and the world."

This isn’t the first time Cogent and HostDime have linked up. HostDime also provisioned a Cogent PoP in their current Orlando data center, and will deploy a similar set-up in their upcoming 100,000 square foot Orlando, Florida flagship data center coming in summer 2022.

HostDime has carrier-neutral data centers strategically placed around the world to be able to service the demands of localized data around the world. Enterprises looking for colocation in global locations can buy just space and power they need from the data center, while purchasing the bandwidth directly from their provider of choice. As the digital transformation around the world continues to evolve and adopt globally, the need for networks and enterprises to interconnect will be more in demand. HostDime is positioned to service those needs through its suite of products and services.

Contrast Security’s State of Application Security in Financial Services Report Finds 75% of Application Security Budgets Are Rising in 2021 Due to Frequent Application Attacks

98% of financial services respondents admit they have experienced at least three successful application exploits in the last 12 months that have caused an operational disruption and/or a data breach leading to the increase in application security budgets

LOS ALTOS, Calif., May 27, 2021 — Contrast Security, a leader in modernizing application security, today announced the findings of its 2021 State of Application Security in Financial Services Report based on a comprehensive survey of development, operations, and security professionals and executives at enterprise-level financial services institutions. The report explores the state of application security at these organizations, and the findings indicate that the security of these applications — that have access and control over consumers’ finances — is not a priority or major concern for most of them.

With most attacks on financial services institutions executed at the application layer at a time when customers demand more digital services and customer-facing applications are developed in-house, application security is mission-critical. Methodologies like Agile and DevOps — and a growing use of open-source code and application programming interfaces (APIs) — have accelerated the development process, enabling financial institutions to speed up digital transformation initiatives that had been planned for months or years in the future. However, the financial services industry, including banking, insurance, and investment firms, has long been a target of cyber criminals, and this has only accelerated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

When multiple serious vulnerabilities are present in an application, cyber criminals have many opportunities to mount a successful attack. Almost all respondents (98%) admit that they have experienced at least three successful application exploits in the past year that have caused an operational disruption and/or a data breach. Astoundingly, more than half of organizations (52%) saw 10 or more successful attacks over 12 months. As a result, 99% of respondents in organizations with more than 15,000 employees peg the cost of each attack at $1 million or above.

The high rate of false positives combined with the lack of actionable information in scan reports creates a major time sink for both development and security teams. More than eight in 10 respondents (81%) say that their application security teams spend three or more hours per false positive to identify it as such. So, when a legitimate vulnerability is identified, 72% of respondents said their organization’s application security team spends six or more hours to triage, diagnose, and prioritize remediation for the development team. The baton then is passed to developers, who spend 10 or more hours per vulnerability to perform remediation and verification, according to 69% of respondents. With a scan report potentially containing hundreds of alerts, with a majority being false positives, these staff hours add up quickly for both the development and the security teams.

Given application security is an increasing concern for enterprises, 75% of respondents report that their application security budget is increasing in 2021, and 24% say that increase is more than 15%. Despite this emphasis on application security, only 40% of organizations place direct responsibility for application security under the CISO. So, while budgets are increasing at many organizations, some may not have a solid strategy in place to use those funds wisely. A crucial starting point will be to ensure security keeps up with the pace of development.

"It is clear that application security strategies have not matured at most of the financial services organizations represented in this survey," said Jeff Williams, CTO and co-founder at Contrast Security. "The good news for institutions looking to build out their strategy is that implementing a modern application security platform can dramatically accelerate their program and produce real improvement quickly. Instrumentation-powered application security can provide continuous security testing at massive scale, providing highly accurate feedback to developers in real time, empowering them to find and fix their own vulnerabilities without direct help from application security specialists."

The Contrast Application Security Platform uses instrumentation to observe, analyze, and protect software from within the application. In doing so, Contrast makes security continuous and integrates seamlessly with modern software — from development into production. In addition, this approach offers an unprecedented application security orchestration layer for financial services institutions to improve enterprisewide risk reporting and policy enforcement. Contrast Security has worked with financial services institutions of all types around the world. Customers include leading global Fortune 500 and financial industry regulatory enterprises.

BLOG POST: Contrast Study Finds Significant Application Security Risk at Financial Services Enterprises

PODCAST: Digital Transformation in Financial Services Accelerates, Application Security Struggles to Keep Up

WEBINAR: New Report Highlights Digital Acceleration in Financial Services Is Creating Application Cyber Risks

Methodology:
This report is based on a comprehensive survey of business leaders, developers, and security professionals at financial services enterprises in North America. Conducted in April and May 2021, the survey sought to gauge the maturity of both the software development operations and application security programs, how organizations are using application security tools, and what outcomes they are seeing. The results of each question were analyzed for the whole cohort, and many answers were also grouped by background data like job title, company size, and application security methodology. From this analysis, we identified several insights about application development and security specific to the financial services vertical.

About Contrast Security:
Contrast Security is the leader in modernizing application security, embedding code analysis and attack prevention directly into software. Contrast’s patented deep security instrumentation completely disrupts traditional application security approaches with integrated, comprehensive security observability that delivers highly accurate assessment and continuous protection of an entire application portfolio. This eliminates the need for disruptive scanning, expensive infrastructure workloads, and specialized security experts. The Contrast Application Security Platform accelerates development cycles, improves efficiencies and cost, and enables rapid scale while protecting applications from known and unknown threats.

US politicization of tech supply chains is both risky and costly

BEIJING, May 25, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on US politicization of tech supply chains is both risky and costly.

In 2019, the Trump administration unleashed its "tech war" on China, with the goal of blocking China’s development in high tech sectors by preventing targeted companies from procuring components manufactured in the United States.

As the White House ramped up its hostility toward Beijing, it intensified its measures. The most notable target was the Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei, which was first placed on the commerce department’s "entity list" putting it under export controls. Later, it was also subjected to the "foreign direct product rule," which unilaterally banned overseas companies who use U.S. patents in their own semiconductor production from supplying the company.

Even though President Joe Biden has since taken office, he has yet to reverse these decisions. Instead, he has pressed on in the mold of an "America First" policy when it comes to semiconductors with the goal of consolidating a U.S. monopoly of the industry and controlling "technologies of the future."

What have been the consequences of these decisions? In fact, they have had adverse effects for America and the world at large.

The aggressive politicization of the semiconductor sector against the world’s second largest economy is disrupting a global supply chain, reversing globalization and creating an effect of "localization."

China has massively boosted its investment in semiconductor capabilities on a whole-of-society scale, while America has created political risks for tech firms who rely on their supplies. On an organizational level, firms have been bulk buying semiconductor and lithography manufacturing equipment from the Netherlands, Japan and South Korea, as well as panic buying semiconductors to hedge against potential future restrictions. Companies are losing confidence in traditional suppliers.

This uncertainty has created a global shortage in semiconductors, which is causing risks to the global economy. The shortage has created delays in the manufacturing and supply of electronic consumer goods and automobiles, which has forced many factories around the world to postpone production and furlough workers. For example, Nissan’s Sunderland factory in the U.K. was forced to slow production for three weeks due to a lack of semiconductors. Another consequence has been growing inflation, which undoubtedly contributed to the unexpected surge in the U.S. consumer price index, which jittered global markets last week.

These adverse outcomes show that weaponizing technology supply chains against China will not make America better off. Localized supply chains are more expensive and will cost the U.S. considerable market share as Beijing develops its own industry. This year, China will commence production of 7-nanometer nodes and quickly cede dependency on lower nodes, with Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) investing in a $2.35 billion chip foundry in Shenzhen set to produce 28-nm integrated circuits. This has allowed companies such as Huawei to continue developing their 5G networks despite U.S. sanctions.

In China, government investment in the sector has already amounted to $150 billion, while earmarked investment for the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25) extends to $1 trillion. While this is seen as a political necessity, few disagree that an open-ended global industry remains preferential. Leading foreign semiconductor companies still seek to compete within the Chinese semiconductor market due to its growing economy and surging demand, showing the dangers of upheaving this market.

In this case, it is worth noting that one thing is certain when it comes to current U.S. policy: Weaponizing semiconductors creates a "lose-lose" situation, carving up a global industry into localized spheres, creating a fractured market and raising prices. That being said, it will still not block China’s technological advances.

For all involved, it is a costly and unpredictable path with knock on effects all the way down to the ordinary consumer.

Quectel unveils new 5G NR modules to accelerate commercial use of 5G SA devices

SHANGHAI, May 21, 2021Quectel Wireless Solutions, the leading global supplier of IoT modules has announced the release of two new 5G New Radio (NR) module series, the RG500S and RM500S. Based on the new Qualcomm 315 5G IoT Modem-RF System, both modules are able to support customers in building dedicated 5G devices for a variety of verticals including industrial IoT, retail, smart energy, private 5G networks, and many others.

Utilizing the powerful Qualcomm 315 5G IoT modem, the RG500S and RM500S support extended life software maintenance, helping create long-lasting IoT devices for the duration of their life span. Offering seamless integration, the RM500S is pin to pin compatible with Quectel’s LTE Cat 4 module EM05, Cat 6 module EM06, Cat 12 modules EM12-G/EM12xR-GL, Cat 16 module EM160R-GL as well as 5G module RM500Q, which provides more competitive 5G solutions to the IoT market. These features will help accelerate the 5G IoT market in the industrial and consumer IoT segments with use cases across robotics, automation, intelligent manufacturing, energy distribution, precision agriculture, construction, and mining.

The RG500S and RM500S modules support 5G NR Sub-6GHz bands in stand-alone (SA) mode offering backward compatibility with LTE networks. With network slicing in SA mode, the two modules are able to offer end-to-end traffic isolation for critical traffic, guaranteed data rates and bandwidth as well as lower latency than in non-standalone (NSA) mode, which meets the demands of ultra-reliability and SLAs (service level agreement) of typical industrial and enterprise scenarios.

The two modules are embedded with rich interfaces and incorporate high-speed USB 3.0/3.1, PCIe 3.0, U(SIM), RGMII and more. Additionally, the RG500S and RM500S integrate a multi-constellation GNSS receiver, which simplifies the product design and provides accurate positioning services for users.
