ZTE, China Mobile and NR Electric win GTI 2022 Market Development Award

SHENZHEN, China, March 4, 2022 — ZTE Corporation (0763.HK / 000063.SZ), a major international provider of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the mobile internet, today announced that it has won the GTI 2022 "Market Development Award" for its 5G TSN Deterministic Network for Green Power Grid, which was designed and developed together with China Mobile and NR Electric.

In the power grid field, greenhouse gas emissions are huge, and efficient use of clean new energy such as wind and solar energy is an effective means to achieve "Emission peak and carbon neutrality". However, wind power and solar energy are easily affected by the weather and regions, bringing challenges to new energy integration into the grid. Consequently, accurate measurement, control, and real-time interaction are required when conventional mobile network mechanism cannot meet the strict network requirements of the power industry.

To solve this problem, ZTE has released the Time Promised Communication (TPC) solution, which integrates 5G TSN/5G LAN/URLLC/SLA accurate control related to time-sensitive networks as defined by 3GPP Release 16. The TPC solution combines software and hardware to effectively solve the network latency and jitter caused by traffic conflicts. It is combined with the slicing technology to reduce 5G end-to-end latency, guarantees the determinacy of the communication network, and satisfies the super-high reliability requirements of the power grid.

Instead of optical cables, the TPC solution enables flexible access to the last mile, greatly reducing communication network construction costs. The solution can be widely used in power grid scenarios, such as power differential protection, power distribution automation, phasor measurement technology (PMU), and accurate grid load scheduling. It accelerates the deployment of new energy such as solar energy and wind energy, achieves efficient coordination of power storage, and helps the power industry achieve strategic objectives of "emission peak and carbon neutrality."

GTI is dedicated to building a global platform of communication technology and promoting a prosperous ecosystem. GTI summit 2022, with the theme of "5G & Decarbonization" has focused on the current situation and strategy of 5G development, as well as how technology innovation will play a role in reaching the goal of carbon neutral and Net Zero. This award is highly recognized in the fields of 5G technology innovation, end-to-end product capability and network architecture verification.

This award further verifies the high application values and the broad prospects of 5G TSN technology. ZTE and China Mobile will promote TPC solution maturity together with R17 technology evolution. The TPC solution can be widely used in the industrial Internet field, including applications in key industries such as power, industry, logistics and healthcare, to significantly improve industrial productivity, operational efficiency and accelerate 5G business innovations.

ZTE has carried out deep cooperation with industry partners to achieve in-depth integration of IT and OT, help enterprises achieve flexible production, improve resources usage efficiency, and build a green and low-carbon industrial ecosystem.

Huawei will Unveil Brand-new Networking Solutions for Home & SME at MWC 2022

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 28, 2022 — Huawei will attend the 2022 MWC held in Spain from February 28 to March 3 and release the fiber-based Wi-Fi networking solution – FTTR (Fiber To The Room) gigabit all-optical room solution, and discuss with industry partners on how to resolve the current network bottlenecks of home and enterprises and how to provide better connection experience for users.

Since the breakout of COVID-19, digitalization and intelligence have developed rapidly. People require smoother communication, more convenient life, and more efficient work. On the one hand, homes have gradually transformed from entertainment centers to diversified production centers. New services such as online education, live broadcast, 8K HD movies, immersive entertainment (VR/cloud games), and smart-home are rapidly emerging. On the other hand, digital transformation and cloudification of small and micro enterprises have become a trend. High-bandwidth and low-latency applications, such as video conferencing and cloud desktop, are becoming popular. These new services pose higher requirements on network latency, bandwidth, and jitter, bringing greater challenges to home and enterprise networks.

However, home users and SMEs are still facing problems caused by poor network experience. According to statistics, 60% of broadband faults are caused by poor Wi-Fi experience. The Wi-Fi coverage ratio of more than half of home users reaches only 55%. Some users say that the Wi-Fi rate near an access point is 500Mbps, but gradually decreases to less than 20 Mbps from the living room to other rooms. According to a survey, the current network problems are mainly caused by the following four aspects:

  1. The rate cannot reach gigabit. Due to the outdated networking cable, the bandwidth can reach only 100Mbps.
  2. Seamless roaming cannot be implemented. There are multiple indoor Wi-Fi points. Traditional networking does not support intelligent switching between devices or the switching time is longer than 200ms. As a result, services are frequently interrupted when users move around.
  3. Multi-user concurrency is not supported. If more than 100 network devices access the Internet at the same time, they will go offline frequently.
  4. Whole-home coverage is not supported. Because fibers are usually routed to ELV boxes or living rooms, Wi-Fi performance deteriorates greatly after wall penetration. As a result, some rooms have no network coverage.

Huawei’s FTTR gigabit all-optical room solution is an innovative solution for home and enterprise networking. Different from traditional networking solutions, this solution extends fibers to every room, leading the newest optical network revolution. Fibers are recognized as the fastest transmission media in the industry. With four advantages, fiber has become a "dark horse" in the communications industry. Fast speed: Fibers are recognized as the fastest transmission media in the industry and can achieve 10Gbps or even 100Gbps transmission capability. Fibers deployed in the entire home can be upgraded to 10Gbps in the future, without the need of re-cabling. Low cost: The fiber industry is mature and the market is stable. The average price of fibers is 50% lower than that of network cables, reducing the reconstruction cost. Easy reconstruction: The size of fibers is about 15% of that of normal network cables. Fibers are thin and easy to be routed through pipes. Environment-friendly: Sand (silicon dioxide) is used as raw material, which is more environment-friendly and sustainable.

In addition to the main exhibition area, Huawei will also build a gigabit Wi-Fi experience center consisting of two exhibition points: FTTR-Home for home scenarios and FTTR-SME for enterprise scenarios. Online service scenarios, such as cloud VR, remote conferencing, IPTV, and 8K HD videos, will be set up to enable users to experience smooth gigabit Wi-Fi networks onsite.

Huawei’s FTTR gigabit all-optical room solution has set off a boom in China. Chinese operators released FTTR services and launched packages in 65 provinces and cities in China last year. Up to now, the number of FTTR users in China has exceeded 150,000. In addition, 20 operators outside China have started pilot projects. About the unique features of Huawei’s FTTR gigabit all-optical room solution and the extraordinary Internet surfing experience to bring to people, February 28, 2022 MWC will give the answer.

SKT will operate a joint exhibition booth with SK Inc., SK Innovation, SK hynix, SK E&S and SK Ecoplant under the theme of ‘SK’s 2030 Net Zero Pledge’ and offer a chance for visitors to experience its innovative green technologies.

  • Environmentally friendly AI and telecommunications network technologies

AI and telecommunications networks stand at the core of ICT innovation. However, they are also pointed out as a cause of environmental pollution due to the large amount of power they consume. Against this backdrop, SKT is accelerating an ICT revolution through the development and application of low-power high-efficiency semiconductors and energy-saving telecommunications network technologies.

At CES 2022, SKT will be showcasing its self-developed AI chip named SAPEON. SAPEON is optimally designed to process artificial intelligence tasks faster, using less power by efficiently processing large amounts of data in parallel.

With the rapid spread of AI services in people’s daily lives and industries, the amount of data that needs to be processed is growing exponentially. However, the existing AI data centers that use Graphics Processing Units (GPU) for inference are receiving criticism for consuming a great amount of energy. SAPEON is an environmentally-friendly solution as it uses 20% less power than GPU, while supporting 1.5 times faster deep learning computation.

SKT will also introduce Single RAN, a technology that reduces the amount of power usage by approximately 53% through integrated operation of 3G and LTE network equipment. The company either replaced the outdated 3G and LTE equipment with new equipment applied with Single RAN or upgraded the software of its existing LTE equipment with Single RAN to operate as both 3G and LTE equipment.

By successfully applying Single RAN to all applicable base stations and repeaters installed in 78 cities in Korea including Seoul in 2020, SKT earned around 10,000 tons of carbon credits.

  • ICT solutions for reducing carbon generation in daily lives

At CES 2022, SKT will invite visitors to experience its metaverse service, multi-use cup project and other ICT services that can help reduce CO2 emissions such as optimal route navigation service.

It provides a wide variety of virtual spaces including conference halls, outdoor stages and rooftops, and enables users to enjoy rich communication by sharing documents (PDF) and video files (MP4). It can accommodate up to 130 users simultaneously, which makes it an ideal place for large-scale events.

Ifland has been providing users with a new and environmentally friendly experience by migrating diverse offline events to the virtual world ranging from the D-100 event for 2021 Seoul UN Peacekeeping Ministerial and K-pop concerts.

SKT will also present the Habit Cup Project that promotes the use of multi-use cups to reduce plastic waste. Coffee shops participating in the project are serving beverages in multi-use cups named ‘Habit Cups’ that can be later returned via smart kiosks capable of identifying and accepting only Habit Cups through the use of SKT’s vision AI technology. Returned cups are collected everyday to be cleaned and sanitized, and then delivered back to cafes.

At present, SKT is carrying out a trial project joined by around 20 cafes located in central areas of Seoul, where there is a large floating population. The company expects to eliminate the use of 1.2 million disposable cups during the three-month project period. It is also implementing a trial project in Jeju Island, and expects to reduce the use of 630,000 disposable cups per year.

Korea’s No.1 mobility platform T Map will also be on display. By providing an optimal route, T Map contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving fuel. The service also helps save social costs by decreasing the risk of traffic accidents through enhanced safety features like sudden brake alert.

"At CES 2022, we will be showcasing cutting-edge technologies that can drive the green ICT revolution, along with innovative services that hold the power to reduce carbon generation in our daily lives," said SKT. "Through multifaceted efforts, SKT will become a solid leader in the era of Net Zero."

KT SAT CEO Kyungmin David Song attended as a panelist in the panel discussion by online with its topic of "How regional operators can adapt and differentiate in this increasingly competitive market environment?". He drew audiences’ attention as he shared KT SAT’s vision for LEO business with creating a global alliance. Four panelists attended the discussion including Song, C-level executives from Hispasat(Spain), Turksat(Turkey) and Yahsat(Arab Emirates) respectively.

"KT SAT will engage in not only HTS satellite but also LEO business in order to occupy sufficient satellite capacity which is basic condition of competitiveness in satellite business.", Song said. He also insisted that regional operators should survive from competitive threat of LEO through an alliance. Considering profitability and time to market, He said regional operators have to prepare diverse service portfolios by offering multi-orbit satellite connectivity which helps them to compete with global players like SpaceX, Amazon. In earlier times, KT SAT has already finished LEO constellation design and submitted ITU filings for LEO constellation to cope with market challenges.

Fierce competition in satellite market is currently expected as many operators participate in LEO business including World top IT companies. LEO satellite features its High through-put and low latency as its strong points compared to traditional GEO satellite. But still, it contains technology issues which have to be solved like gateways, ISL(Inter Satellite Link) and so on.

KT SAT also introduced its Hybrid solution developed by KT group with its in-house technology. Hybrid solution provides stable network connections and true seamlessness without any glitch. Moreover, the solution can be applied to any type of satellite and terrestrial network such as LEO, GEO, mobile network and etc. As multi-orbit satellites keep emerging, Hybrid solution is considered as a key for service providers to integrate diverse networks as a whole.
