SK Telecom Showcases Green ICT at CES 2022

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 2, 2022 — SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM, hereinafter referred to as "SKT") today announced that it will participate in CES 2022, which will be held in Las Vegas from January 5 to 8, 2022, to showcase green ICT in the era of Net Zero.

SKT Showcases Green ICT at CES 2022

SKT will operate a joint exhibition booth with SK Inc., SK Innovation, SK hynix, SK E&S and SK Ecoplant under the theme of ‘SK’s 2030 Net Zero Pledge’ and offer a chance for visitors to experience its innovative green technologies.

  • Environmentally friendly AI and telecommunications network technologies

AI and telecommunications networks stand at the core of ICT innovation. However, they are also pointed out as a cause of environmental pollution due to the large amount of power they consume. Against this backdrop, SKT is accelerating an ICT revolution through the development and application of low-power high-efficiency semiconductors and energy-saving telecommunications network technologies.

At CES 2022, SKT will be showcasing its self-developed AI chip named SAPEON. SAPEON is optimally designed to process artificial intelligence tasks faster, using less power by efficiently processing large amounts of data in parallel.

With the rapid spread of AI services in people’s daily lives and industries, the amount of data that needs to be processed is growing exponentially. However, the existing AI data centers that use Graphics Processing Units (GPU) for inference are receiving criticism for consuming a great amount of energy. SAPEON is an environmentally-friendly solution as it uses 20% less power than GPU, while supporting 1.5 times faster deep learning computation.

SKT will also introduce Single RAN, a technology that reduces the amount of power usage by approximately 53% through integrated operation of 3G and LTE network equipment. The company either replaced the outdated 3G and LTE equipment with new equipment applied with Single RAN or upgraded the software of its existing LTE equipment with Single RAN to operate as both 3G and LTE equipment.

By successfully applying Single RAN to all applicable base stations and repeaters installed in 78 cities in Korea including Seoul in 2020, SKT earned around 10,000 tons of carbon credits.

  • ICT solutions for reducing carbon generation in daily lives

At CES 2022, SKT will invite visitors to experience its metaverse service, multi-use cup project and other ICT services that can help reduce CO2 emissions such as optimal route navigation service.

The company will introduce its metaverse platform Ifland as a new promising path towards a low carbon society. Ifland allows users to take carbon generating activities such as conferences, presentations and business trips to the virtual world.

It provides a wide variety of virtual spaces including conference halls, outdoor stages and rooftops, and enables users to enjoy rich communication by sharing documents (PDF) and video files (MP4). It can accommodate up to 130 users simultaneously, which makes it an ideal place for large-scale events.

Ifland has been providing users with a new and environmentally friendly experience by migrating diverse offline events to the virtual world ranging from the D-100 event for 2021 Seoul UN Peacekeeping Ministerial and K-pop concerts.

SKT will also present the Habit Cup Project that promotes the use of multi-use cups to reduce plastic waste. Coffee shops participating in the project are serving beverages in multi-use cups named ‘Habit Cups’ that can be later returned via smart kiosks capable of identifying and accepting only Habit Cups through the use of SKT’s vision AI technology. Returned cups are collected everyday to be cleaned and sanitized, and then delivered back to cafes.

At present, SKT is carrying out a trial project joined by around 20 cafes located in central areas of Seoul, where there is a large floating population. The company expects to eliminate the use of 1.2 million disposable cups during the three-month project period. It is also implementing a trial project in Jeju Island, and expects to reduce the use of 630,000 disposable cups per year.

Korea’s No.1 mobility platform T Map will also be on display. By providing an optimal route, T Map contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving fuel. The service also helps save social costs by decreasing the risk of traffic accidents through enhanced safety features like sudden brake alert.

"At CES 2022, we will be showcasing cutting-edge technologies that can drive the green ICT revolution, along with innovative services that hold the power to reduce carbon generation in our daily lives," said SKT. "Through multifaceted efforts, SKT will become a solid leader in the era of Net Zero."

KT SAT CEO Kyungmin David Song suggested establishing a LEO alliance between regional operators in order to reinforce their business competitiveness at Euroconsult’s WBSW(World Satellite Business Week) 2021 held in Paris, France.

KT SAT CEO Kyungmin David Song attended as a panelist in the panel discussion by online with its topic of "How regional operators can adapt and differentiate in this increasingly competitive market environment?". He drew audiences’ attention as he shared KT SAT’s vision for LEO business with creating a global alliance. Four panelists attended the discussion including Song, C-level executives from Hispasat(Spain), Turksat(Turkey) and Yahsat(Arab Emirates) respectively.

"KT SAT will engage in not only HTS satellite but also LEO business in order to occupy sufficient satellite capacity which is basic condition of competitiveness in satellite business.", Song said. He also insisted that regional operators should survive from competitive threat of LEO through an alliance. Considering profitability and time to market, He said regional operators have to prepare diverse service portfolios by offering multi-orbit satellite connectivity which helps them to compete with global players like SpaceX, Amazon. In earlier times, KT SAT has already finished LEO constellation design and submitted ITU filings for LEO constellation to cope with market challenges.

Fierce competition in satellite market is currently expected as many operators participate in LEO business including World top IT companies. LEO satellite features its High through-put and low latency as its strong points compared to traditional GEO satellite. But still, it contains technology issues which have to be solved like gateways, ISL(Inter Satellite Link) and so on.

KT SAT also introduced its Hybrid solution developed by KT group with its in-house technology. Hybrid solution provides stable network connections and true seamlessness without any glitch. Moreover, the solution can be applied to any type of satellite and terrestrial network such as LEO, GEO, mobile network and etc. As multi-orbit satellites keep emerging, Hybrid solution is considered as a key for service providers to integrate diverse networks as a whole.

Smart links up with PH government on war vs organized global syndicate on SMS spamming

MANILA, Philippines, Nov. 23, 2021 — PLDT’s wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) fully supports the move of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), the National Privacy Commission (NPC), and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to investigate and stop the proliferation of SMS spam-based scam and fraud.

From October 21 to November 20, Smart has blocked a daily average of 400 to 500 mobile numbers found to be related to SMS spam, and some 40 domains and IP addresses used by online scammers.

These follow the recent sudden spike in SMS spam, where mobile users receive unsolicited but enticing messages from strange numbers, that then lead to an elaborate online phishing scam where the target mobile users end up falling victims to fraud.

"We are one with the NTC, NPC, and DTI in protecting our customers from these unscrupulous individuals. As we work tirelessly to ensure the integrity of our own cybersecurity systems, we encourage our customers to be vigilant and alert so that we can work with the authorities to prevent these scams and eventually stop these cybercriminals," according to PLDT and Smart President and CEO Al Panlilio.

Mobile users are reminded to not entertain questions or surveys from unknown senders, and to never provide their personal information to strangers. Those who receive suspicious and unsolicited SMS may also report the scammers and their numbers direct to the NTC (https://ntc.gov.ph/complaint). The NTC, after due process, may then order Smart to cut the cybercriminals’ numbers.

Smart has also implemented blocking access to domains and IP addresses evidently found to be related to these fraudulent schemes.

"We protect our customers and block accounts based on mobile numbers associated with fraud. But since mobile numbers may be easily replaced, we also block on the domain and IP address levels, as soon as we have evidence that a specific domain is used as a platform by scammers," according to PLDT and Smart Chief Information and Security Officer Angel T. Redoble.

"In fact we have identified and blocked about 40 domains and IP addresses involved in this scam, which leads us to believe that this is a huge and sophisticated scam by an organized global syndicate. We urge our customers to be very paranoid and to never share sensitive information especially with strangers no matter how enticing the offer may sound," added Redoble.

Smart leads Philippine 5G adoption in fast-growing APAC market

MANILA, Philippines, Nov. 4, 2021 — As 5G adoption picks up globally, Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), a subsidiary of PLDT, Inc., is at the forefront of driving 5G adoption in the Philippines.

Between the second and third quarter, data traffic on Smart’s 5G network also posted triple-digit growth, as average monthly data traffic grew by nearly 20x between the 4th quarter of 2020 and the 3rd quarter of 2021. Smart also delivered a three-fold increase in 5G data traffic in the first quarter and second quarter of 2021.

This is bolstered by recent data from YouGov, a London-based international research data and analytics group, which reported countries in the Asia-Pacific region are the world’s largest and quickest growing smartphone markets, and they also lead the way in 5G adoption compared to other parts of the world.

In the Philippines, Smart–the country’s fastest and most reliable 5G network, delivering the most consistent and most available 5G service, according to Ookla–leads the way in 5G adoption and network deployment.

Smart operates the country’s widest 5G network at more than 4,400 sites nationwide. Most recently, Smart fired up the country’s first commercial 5G Stand-alone (SA) cell sites in business hub Makati City. 5G SA technology paves the way for new industrial applications as it provides super-fast response times and faster access to higher data rates that are critical in advancing Internet of Things solutions for businesses, health care, and smart cities.

To benefit from the best 5G experience in the country, more customers have been making the move to the Smart network without having to change their numbers, as enabled by Mobile Number Portability.

Customers who want to switch to the Smart network must first secure a Unique Subscriber Code from their originating provider to serve as clearance and bring it to the nearest Smart Store along with a valid ID and any proof of mobile ownership. From there, Smart shall begin processing their application without any charges.

To know more about switching to Smart, interested switchers may also visit x.smart/switch or head to the nearest Smart Store. Users may also make the switch via the GigaLife App.
