Phoenix Contact, Quectel and Ericsson jointly develop the first industrial 5G router for private networks

SHANGHAI, June 26, 2020Phoenix Contact, Quectel and Ericsson have worked together to develop and deploy the first industrial 5G router for local industrial applications in a private 5G network.

With the help of the newly developed 5G Router, industrial applications, such as machines, controls and other equipment, can now be connected to a private 5G network and thus be orchestrated in their resource usage, priority and behavior. They therefore offer a decisive advantage compared to previous mobile radio solutions, which can only use all – mostly license-free – radio bands with a best effort principle and which have to accept performance losses in equal measure when the radio spectrum is heavily occupied.

To achieve this, all three companies brought their strengths together: Phoenix Contact as the first choice supplier of WLAN, Bluetooth and mobile radio routers for industrial applications, Quectel as the leading global supplier of cellular and GNSS modules and Ericsson supporting the product development as a network supplier and a leading force of the 5G technology development. By starting to interact at an early stage, the three companies have been able to rapidly develop a solution that provides industrial-grade performance over private 5G networks. The collaboration between Quectel, Phoenix Contact and Ericsson has seen extensive interoperability testing at the Ericsson lab to ensure the reliable commercial performance of the 5G router. The experience made is highly important for Ericsson following the strategic approach offering 5G solutions jointly with mobile network operators towards the industry. In addition, all three companies cooperated closely to enable Industry 4.0 applications with this 5G standalone private network.

About Quectel

Quectel is the leading global supplier of cellular and GNSS modules, with a broad product portfolio covering 5G, LTE/LTE-A, NB-IoT/LTE-M, UMTS/HSPA(+), GSM/GPRS and GNSS. After KT and Hyundai Robotics contracts to speed up collaboration for digital transformation based on 5G, AI and smart factory, KT president Ku Hyeonmo and Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings Senior Executive Vice President (SEVP) Chung Kisun are taking photo at the signing ceremony.

Under the contracts, KT will acquire a 10 percent equity stake in Hyundai Robotics, the leader in the Korean industrial robotics market, for 50 billion won.

KT also signed a business cooperation agreement with Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings for joint efforts toward digital transformation.

The signing ceremony, held at the KT headquarters in central Seoul, was attended by KT President Ku Hyeonmo, Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings Senior Executive Vice President (SEVP) Chung Kisun and Hyundai Robotics CEO Seo Yoo-seong, and other senior executives.

The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding in May 2019 and the new contracts solidify their ongoing collaboration to spread digital transformation based on 5G, AI and smart factory. They intend to quicken joint development of intelligent service robots, technological research in autonomous driving, and smart factory solutions.

“In the post-COVID 19 era, KT is prepared to contribute to strengthening the Republic of Korea’s industrial competitiveness and the transformation of our nation’s manufacturing industry, taking advantage of our 5G and AI capability in cooperation with Hyundai Heavy Industries Group,” said KT President Ku. “Beginning with Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, we will do our utmost to expand digital transformation in diverse areas.”

KT will undertake software development and applications related to intelligent service robots and autonomous driving, while Hyundai Robotics will be responsible for hardware development and manufacturing. This is expected to lead to the introduction of intelligent robots that not only provide hotel amenities but also serve food and beverages at restaurants, and cleaning patrol robots loaded with cleaning and security functions. For entry into the service robot market, the two parties also plan to develop collaborative robots for small factories and large franchise stores.

For a smart factory, KT will provide communication technology, cloud, ICT solutions, and related bundle products, while Hyundai Robotics will supply robots and relevant solutions. The toolkits of both sides will also be applied jointly for smart hospitals and logistics.

Along with its equity participation in Hyundai Robotics, KT will seek an exchange of human resources to help refine elevation of Hyundai Robotics’ competitiveness in robotics and smart factory.

“Beyond mere production, the competitiveness of manufacturers will be determined in the future by the ability of individual businesses to read market trends and transform themselves.” said Chung Kisun, Senior Executive Vice President (SEVP) of Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings. “Through expansive business cooperation with KT, we believe that not only Hyundai Robotics but the entire Hyundai Heavy Industries Group will be able to achieve digital transformation and thereby improve our competitiveness as leading enterprises in the world.”

Hyundai Robotics, spun off from Hyundai Heavy Industries in April 2017, became a separate corporation specialized for robotics and smart solutions in May this year. It provides smart factory and smart logistics services, and has two subsidiaries – Hyundai Robotics Shanghai and Hyundai L&S (Logistics and Solutions). The company aims for an initial public offering in 2022.

In accordance with their business cooperation agreement, KT and Hyundai Heavy Industries Group will delineate details of their collaboration, particularly through a new senior committee on joint efforts in smart solutions, digital transformation, AI and ICT, as well as other business opportunities. The group will include KT President Ku and Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings Senior Executive Vice President (SEVP) Chung Kisun.

Last year November, KT and Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings conducted a joint presentation on their 5G-based business cooperation, focusing on smart factory and smart shipbuilding. In February this year, they launched “AI One Team,” aiming to lift Korea to global leadership in AI, and two months later, KT and Hyundai Robotics introduced “N Bot,” an upgrade from KT’s second-generation GiGA Genie hotel robot in terms of both function and design, at the Novotel Ambassador Seoul Dongdaemun Hotel. It was followed by the signing with Hyundai Construction Equipment of a memorandum of understanding for “joint development and commercialization of 5G smart construction equipment and industrial vehicle platform.”

KT expects that its cooperation with Hyundai Heavy Industries Group will expand digital transformation into diverse industrial fields, eventually enhancing national competitiveness. To that end, KT is exerting corporation-wide efforts for digital transformation to help maximize efficiency and widen business opportunities of companies on the basis of its expertise in 5G network, AI, Big Data, cloud and ICT solution.

KT Commercializes 5G Self-Driving Freight Carts

SEOUL, South Korea, May 26, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — KT Corp. (KRX: 030200; NYSE: KT), South Korea’s largest telecommunications company, announced today that it is using 5G self-driving carts at its logistics center, enabling a nearly 50 percent reduction in employees’ travel range for loading and transporting inventory.

5G autonomous carts transport smartphones and other devices to designated locations, as requested by the control center and the person in charge, at KT’s Seobu Distribution Center.
5G autonomous carts transport smartphones and other devices to designated locations, as requested by the control center and the person in charge, at KT’s Seobu Distribution Center.

The new system of the leading Korean telecom provider is the first use of next-generation smart logistics vehicles in the Korean communications industry. Two types of 5G self-driving carts, “NarGo” and “TarGo,” are being employed in collaboration with Twinny, a company specializing in indoor autonomous robots and online platforms.

KT incorporated its autonomous intelligent vehicle (AIV) service to NarGo and Targo. AIV service is an integrated control system that processes instructions and assesses operating conditions by using pre-installed maps and real-time information on automated carts. It also facilitates latency-free collection and analysis of operational data as well as statistics compilation.

“In preparation for the post-COVID era, technologies to minimize person-to-person contact are increasingly demanded throughout industries,” said Choi Kangrim, Head of KT’s Connected Car Biz Center. “By applying AIV service based on our advanced communication networks and platforms in a wider scope of industries and leading relevant technological advancement, we at KT will do our utmost to help our customers enjoy the benefits in their everyday lives.”

The AIV usage follows meticulous experiments in minimizing person-to-person contact between employees while improving their productivity at work. As a result, KT explained, loading cellphones and other items for transport requires 47 percent less travel range by employees at KT’s Seobu Distribution Center.

The self-driving logistics vehicles and AIV service are based on KT’s integrated mobility platform, dubbed “5G Mobility Makers.” The platform is at the core of KT’s connected car services, which feature automated driving control by collecting and analyzing data produced by different vehicles. Utilizing this capability can lead to real-time remote control of AIV cloud control centers developed by partner companies and various business sites. This will help minimize movement of and personal contact between employees and boost their throughput at large-scale distribution centers as well as small-scale warehouses.

Beyond the application of its autonomous driving technology at the Seobu Distribution Center, KT will continue its research and development efforts to lead the technological advances required to reduce person-to-person contact throughout the logistics industry in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to the pandemic, KT will start providing 5G autonomous carts and control systems for small-scale logistics operations at hospitals, libraries and various other industrial sites.

KT announces collaboration on ICT-based Epidemic Preparedness

SEOUL, South Korea, May 17, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — KT Corporation (KRX: 030200; NYSE: KT), South Korea’s largest telecommunications company, announced a three-year research study today funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for ICT-based global epidemic response using artificial intelligence (AI) and Big Data.

The 10-million-dollar project stems from the recognition of South Korea’s advanced information and communication technology (ICT) as well as its proven ability to cope with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The three-year research collaboration builds off discussions between the Gates Foundation and KT in 2019 and the research will be conducted in South Korea, which possesses a high mobile phone penetration rate and 5G infrastructure.

“With this contribution from the Gates Foundation, KT hopes to enhance our opportunity to lead the global effort toward outbreak prevention and response by taking advantage of AI and Big Data,” said Jeon Hongbeom, KT’s head of AI/DX Business Unit. “We also expect to contribute further to the Republic of Korea’s capabilities for epidemic response and preparedness, which has already been globally recognized.”

With Gates Foundation grant funding, KT will develop Big Data algorithms to improve early-diagnosis based on AI during an epidemic and prediction of viral infections spread using mobile data. Research expenses will be divided equally between the two organizations.

“The use of mobile technology and sensors paired with smart data analysis can help address some of the challenges countries face in timely and effective response to disease outbreaks,” said Andrew Trister, deputy director of digital health innovation at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. “Knowing where a disease is moving and being able to predict spread can help save time and save lives. We’re pleased to be providing co-funding alongside Korea Telecom for this consortium of research partners. These will be valuable learnings for South Korea, and applicable to other geographies.”

The collaboration between KT and the Gates Foundation on improving global health has its origins at the data innovation working group by the World Economic Forum in 2018. Since then, the organizations have discussed collaboration on innovative epidemic response using ICT. In April 2019, KT introduced its Global Epidemic Prevention Platform (GEPP), which is to prevent the spread of infectious diseases using mobile data, at the ICT forum hosted by Research Investment for Global Health Technology Fund (RIGHT Fund), South Korea’s first funding agency dedicated to the Global Health R&D through the partnership between the Korean Government, Life Science companies, and the Gates Foundation, and the RIGHT Fund facilitated the discussions between the parties resulted in this three year partnership.

The project calls for KT to first develop a mobile app to automatically input symptoms typically associated with viral infections. An Internet of Things (IoT) body temperature sensor will be among the tools. Symptoms and body temperature will be analyzed with AI to create an algorithm that will calculate the probability of infection.

KT will also use mobile data to examine human mobility patterns and regions with epidemics to determine the direction of the infection spread. At the same time, it will analyze virus trends by region and develop forecasting models to predict seasonal outbreak for each region.

KT expects the research will contribute to global management of epidemics and pandemics. Technically, it will sound an alarm when an infectious disease appears to help prevent massive outbreaks and improve chances of treatment and survival through self-testing.

On one hand, KT forms a consortium with its domestic partners. Korea University Hospital will be tasked with analyzing pathogen genome sequencing; Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information with forecasting models of viral inflow and proliferation; Mobile Doctor with conducting app-based diagnostic data analysis; and MediBloc with developing a blockchain-based platform for sharing user data.

South Korea’s advanced ICT infrastructure has made decisive contributions to the tract-tracing of virus infection as well as social distancing through work from home, remote education and teleconferencing. Those who are infected are isolated at home and monitored through a smartphone app for “self-quarantine safety protection.”

In the wake of the 2015 outbreak of MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), KT developed its GEPP service in collaboration with the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Ministry of Science and ICT. The multifunction platform warns of epidemic outbreaks and offers relevant information to travelers while tracing their movement to help stop disease transmission.

The global health area, where KT is partnering, aims for better public health in developing countries through development and application of innovative solutions.
