The Acer Swift 5 was one of the most desirable thin-and-light laptops in its day. It was not hard to see why that was the case. It was pretty, it was light, it was compact, and for what its worth, it is powerful. It is not what you want to call a budget option for the masses though, it was more of a premium workhorse you can bring around anywhere you want to work at.
It is 2023 though, and the Swift 5 platform, while still relevant and powerful, is outdated. We need a new Swift, a modern Swift. For some reason, we need two different swifts too.
Welcome to the successor to the Swift 5, the Swift 14. To be fair, the Swift 14 is not necessarily a new thing, they launched it in their previous Next@Acer conference late last year. Gone is the single number moniker of old. The new Swift 14 is an indication to what you are technically getting out of the Swift. Is it confusing? Yes. Is it a welcome change? Well, yes. But is it necessary? We do not think so. No matter, the Swift 14 is here.
Acer Swift 14
The Acer Swift 14 builds on whatever that made the Swift 5 a desirable laptop in the first place. It is a great-looking piece of slab with sharp aggressive lines that somehow just appeals. To be fair, it still looks very much like a Swift 5, just that you won’t find the number 5 anywhere on the laptop. You get new colours though, Steam Blue and Green.
What matters though is what you get inside the new laptop. The 12th Generation Intel Core processor is retired and replaced with a slew of options from the latest 13th Generation Intel Core processors. There is no discrete GPU, as with the traditional Swift 5. You still get the proven Intel Iris XE graphics within the new laptop though. You also get up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM to ensure that you get the best out of the processors. To keep everything running smoothly and snappily, you have up to 1TB of SSD storage.
There is also a new cooling system to keep the powerful processor running at its optimum clock speeds. They call it the TwinAir dual fan system with D6 copper heat pipes to increase airflow for better cooling.
As with the old Swift 5, the Swift 14 features a touch sensitive display with an Antimicrobial coating on a protective glass. Underneath the protective Glass is a 14-inch IPS display boasting 2,560 by 1,600 pixels for your viewing pleasure. You can look at your screen at up to 10 hours at a time without attaching yourself to a wall socket. With WiFi 6E as well, you can keep yourself untethered for a very long time.
Considering all that, it is impressive that the Swift 5 only weighs 1.2kg. It is a rigid body too, since the Swift 5 is made entirely out of CNC machined aluminium. It is also still as compact as before whilst still offering full sized ports on the laptops.
Acer Swift Go 14
Stemming out from the Swift 5 lineage is another Swift product. Welcome to the Swift Go 14, the new Swift for the young and active generation. It offers the same good looks as the Swift 5 with minor design differences.
It is just 14.9mm thick at its thickest point. It also only weighs 1.25kg, just a little heavier than the Swift 14. It offers more battery life with the weight though at up to 13 hours on a single.
You still get a 14-inch IPS display offering Full HD in resolution. The Windows 11 Home that you see on the display is powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 7730U (up to) processor. No discrete GPU business here still, but the integrated graphics from AMD should prove potent for light-hearted games. You also get up to 16GB LPDDR4X RAM and up to 512GB in SSD storage to keep things lightning fast even when multitasking. It also offers a good selection of modern ports like USB Type-C and HDMI 2.1.
Price and Availability
Acer’s Swift 14 and Swift Go 14 will be available by the end of April 2023 from Acer’s own eStore and official stores on Shopee and Lazada. The new Swifts will be priced from MYR 4,299 and 3,199 respectively. More on the Acer Swift laptops can be found on their website.
Acer makes some of the most compelling thin and light laptops in the market. One of the most popular one in their stables is the Swift 5. Unlike the Swift 3 or the Swift X, the Swift 5 is made to be a full on thin and light laptop for the masses. It also does not have a discrete GPU, to ensure that it keeps to minimum weight and thickness. It also features a very pretty and handy touch sensitive display for added navigation options. There is a problem with the past two generations of Acer’s Swift 5. They both look exactly the same save for different colour options. Not the new one.
Acer Swift 5
The only thing the new Swift 5 made for 2022 with Intel’s 12th Generation processors shares with its predecessor is its Olive Green colour option which we find quite attractive on the new design. It is still made entirely out of aluminium for that premium feel and finish. This time, the Acer Swift 5 is made from a unibody aerospace grade aluminium that has been precisely CNC-machined. That also means that it should be even more durable than before.
There is a small trade off with the new Acer Swift 5 with more premium build material. The laptop has gained some weight. Instead of weighing just below 1kg, it now weighs in at 1.2kg. It is not the end of the world though, 200g of weight gain is understandable considering the build material.
While it has grown in heft a little, it remains the same 14.95mm thick as before, which is still mighty thin for a laptop with full-sized USB Type-A and HDMI ports. The new construction and some new hardware within the laptop also mean that the body is slightly more compact than before. All these and you are still getting the best Intel can offer within the body.
The Intel Evo device is powered by Intel’s latest 12th Generation Core processors with Intel Iris Xe Graphics. You get up to an Intel Core i7-1260P processor for thin and light laptops. You also get up to 16GB of LPDDR4X RAM to go with the powerful CPU. Unfortunately, the RAM is not expandable. Storage comes in the form of a 1TB NVMe SSD, which is plenty enough for all kinds of work you can do with the Swift 5 plus a few movies for your entertainment needs. Keeping everything cool and comfortable is a brilliantly designed backlit keyboard which also acts as the air inlet for the laptop.
All of these power keeps Windows 11 running smoothly on its brilliant 14-inch touch-sensitive display. The IPS panel boasts 2,560 by 1,600 pixels, effectively a WQXGA 16:10 panel for improved productivity and flexibility with more real estate. If you need to quickly get a photo or video edited, the 100% sRGB rating should do your photos and videos justice. The thin bezels surrounding the 14-inch panel is kept to a minimum too, just to get the device to fit as snuggly in your bag as before. The Corning Gorilla Glass with Antimicrobial coating to ensure that the display is protected from all kinds of abuse.
Other than the two full-sized ports mentioned above, you get two more USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 4 and 65W PD support and a 3.5mm combo jack. To ensure that you look your best in video calls, you get a Full HD webcam with SHDR support. You also do not need to carry your charger around too much with up to 9 hours of quoted battery life.
Acer Aspire Series
Alongside the new Swift 5, Acer also launches their new Aspire series laptops. The Aspire series are not made to be as thin and as light as the Swift 5. They are not made to be the most premium laptops in the market either. They are built to be value-for-money laptops for the mainstream market.
Update to Intel’s 12th Generation processors, the 15.6-inch Aspire series also receives an update in the looks department. The Acer logo is now smaller than before and placed at the top part of the shell instead of the middle. To be fair, most of Acer’s newer laptops feature similar design language.
Alongside the powerful Intel processors, you get up to 8GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. The RAM is expandable with an extra slot, while the storage can be expanded as well with a SATA SSD or HDD. You also get to spec your Aspire 3 with up to NVIDIA’s GeForce MX550 discrete GPU for some extra processing power for quick games or video editing use cases. The Aspire 5 with up to an Intel Iris Xe Graphics also features two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 4 support so that you can hook up two more 4K displays.

The Acer Aspire 3 and Aspire 5 comes in a few attractive colours, including the new Willow Green colour scheme. The Aspire 3 retails from MYR 2,499 while the Aspire 5 starts from MYR 2,599. The working environment and requirements today is vastly different from before. Especially in the conditions that we know today, the workspace has really shifted from the office, to home, or to anywhere else you are comfortable. Work has shifted from an office only affair to a remote situation. The key phrase here is “anywhere, anytime”.
But it is not just the working class that has shifted, the classrooms have shifted too. The classroom is not a location anymore. The progress has started since Google introduced their suite of Classroom and learning focused tools, to be fair. The Acer Swift 5

The Acer Swift 5 is still the symbol of power and portability in Acer’s stable of devices. It is still the same size and weight of the previous Acer Swift 5 for 2019. There are some differences here though.
The Acer Swift 5 for 2020 packs a one-piece glass protected 14-inch Full HD display up front with integrated bezel instead of the plastic bezel casing of the 2019 version. It is still a touch display too. We think that it looks very cool too, in its 2020 skin. Oh yes, there are some new colours too.
Visually then, the differences are subtle enough that you might not notice. Technically as well, the rest of the Swift 5 is no different from the 2019 version, including its keyboard. Most of the differences are kept within the lightweight 1.05kg body though.
You get a new 11th generation Intel Core processor up to a Core i7-1165G7. The Core i7 is paired to Intel’s latest Iris X Graphics. Technically, the Swift 5 should be able to handle 4K video processing smoothly enough with the combination of the processor and GPU. Just do not expect the Acer Swift 5 to destroy your table with the processing speed.
The Intel Evo platform notebook PC with the new processor allows the Acer Swift 5’s battery to last up to 15 hours on a single charge. The battery is a fast-charging one too, just so that you do not have to be stuck near a wall socket and enjoy the weather at your pool area or balcony.
The Antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass covered display ensures that your display stays bacteria free and your fingers clean too when you interact with the touch screen. As we all know, touch screens can be very gross under the microscope. Of course, you will appreciate the 100% sRGB colour gamut too if you need to work with videos and photos.

The Acer Swift 3

If you need something a little more budget friendly you can get the Acer Swift 3. You do not get the touch screen of the Swift 5 mind you. It is also slightly heavier at 1.2kg, and at 15.95mm, thicker than the Swift 5.
You still get a beautiful IPS display with Full HD resolution though. Within the aluminium and magnesium body construction is still a powerful 11th generation Intel Core i7 (up to). With the powerful new CPU is an Intel Iris X Graphics integrated GPU that should be able to handle even light video editing. With 16GB of RAM (up to) and 512GB off SSD storage (up to), you should not be left wanting more in speed and power from a lightweight and ultra-portable package.
Like the Swift 5, it comes with WiFi 6 technology too for an extra stable and speedy wireless internet connection in your home (if you have a WiFi 6 router). On top of that, it packs 11 hours of battery life and it even fast charges. No, that is not as long as the Acer Swift 5, but 11 hours is still more than a full workday, technically.

Thin and light is the new normal. We’re seeing more and more laptops try to set themselves apart from the crowd with more powerful insides and features that, at times, don’t really make sense. Then we have one of Acer’s golden boys – the Swift 5 which has refined Acer’s approach to the Swift series and hit a goldilocks intermediate that makes it a serious contender. In fact, it could be one of the best laptops that Acer has made to date under it’s Acer brand. I know – high praise for an introduction – but you’ll see why when we dive into the review.
Design
The Swift 5 is unremarkable when it comes to its overall design; it doesn’t turn into a tablet, it doesn’t have a stylus nor does it have any obvious design queues that make you go “WOW!”. But, that’s what makes the Swift 5 all the more appealing. Its unassuming design is one of the laptop’s strong points. The simplistic approach Acer has used in designing the thin and light laptop allowed the company to focus on what matters – the touch and feel of the laptop.
That said, you can’t say the Swift 5 isn’t a looker. The design has clean lines and doesn’t carry any of those jarring, flashy lines that can be such an eyesore. The sleek, clean approach that Acer has taken allows the laptop to feel and look more premium. We had the Charcoal Blue version in the office for review and it was a real beaut! The deep blue colour gives it a slightly mysterious allure while the gold accent on the hinge looks and feels like it’s a treasured book in a library. In fact, the gold accent actually looks like a book spine. It makes the Swift 5 feel like a really important book that you tuck away so no one can destroy it.
Opening the laptop, it feels like the display melds into the body thanks to the minimal bezel. The backlit keyboard actually looked really good on the deep blue of the laptop. The back light made the keys have a white accent when they were on and it made the laptop feel a little bit more special. The elegant contrast of the colours on the Charcoal blue felt like the final finesse of a painting. It complemented the muted gold of the keyboard and the hinge quite elegantly. I would go so far as to say, Acer should have called this Royal Blue instead.
Hardware
The elegantly unremarkable outsides hides power packed insides – especially by thin and light standards. On the version we had to review, the Swift 5 was packing an Intel Core i7 with Intel IRIS Plus graphics and it had 16GB of RAM to boot. On paper you’d be scratching your head wondering how these specifications justify the title in anyway, but I’ll dive into that in the performance section of the review.
The display on the Swift 5 is a crisp Full HD 1080p IPS panel which is more than sufficient for the 14-inch screen size. Acer did really well holding back on putting a 4K UHD panel in the Swift 5. Any more pixels and you’d be dealing the atrocity of Window’s scaling to make it useable. The touch screen is also a very welcomed touch.
Acer also made the Swift 5 feel a lot more premium with magnesium-aluminium and magnesium-lithium alloys. These materials give the laptop a sturdiness that not many of its direct competitors have. In fact, it was a smart choice cause the alloy actually helps with dissipating heat to keep the laptop performing really well.

Features
As I mentioned in the beginning, thin and light laptops have always been hit an miss when it comes to features. However, Acer has taken a very minimalist approach even with features for the Swift 5. They’ve taken some laser sharp focus on a few features that improve the overall user experience of the laptop and worked on perfecting it. While that means that the laptop isn’t very feature rich – it also means that the features that do come for the ride are there cause they have a major impact overall.
Quick Unlock with Windows Hello
The first feature that made a pretty big difference is the inclusion of a fingerprint reader which works with Windows Hello. The fingerprint reader actually comes in handy particularly when you want to use your laptop in public without typing in your password or if you simply need it to unlock quick. It’s simple swipe of the finger on the sensor and you’re golden.
Throughout the review period, there weren’t many instances when the fingerprint unlock actually failed. If any it was a Windows 10 failure due to some update or it just not detecting the sensor after an update. Thankfully, when this happened, there were options to unlock using the account password or a PIN which was set during Windows’ setup.
Ports, ports and more ports
You’d think me crazy to say that this was one of the BIGGEST assets when it came to features on the Swift 5. But I’m not exaggerating. In a day and age where we have super thin and light laptops, we’ve also lost the convenience of having ports which are even more important – particularly if you’re running between client meetings and dealing with USB drives all day. Instead, we’ve been relegated to being content with having to buy an additional dongle for the connectivity features we need to be productive.
If you’re like me, the lack of a HDMI port would be a deal breaker. If you don’t have an HDMI, it’s very likely you’ll be relegated to the bottom of the consideration pile and guess what? The Swift 5 comes with an HDMI port! It’s something you don’t expect when you’re dealing with a laptop of its build. While wireless projecting and online storage are modern conveniences, there is a comfort in knowing you’re not being held captive by the cloud and have the freedom to connect and project even without WiFi. In addition, it also meant that a larger screen was always an option which is very important for people who are dealing with design and also if you’re like me and have 2 screens to keep up with the number of windows you have while working.
The array of ports supported by the Swift 5 makes is more versatile and better equipped to handle the many different technological environments a working professional is thrust into. You’ll never know when you enter a client’s office and their projector isn’t ready for wireless connection. That said, even with the Thunderbolt support and even the HDMI, you’re left depending on a converter if you encounter the dreaded VGA port – but that’s cause it’s an ancient spirit of evil. Aside from this, the USB-C, USB-A and HDMI ports allow you excellent versatility with the laptop.
Performance
The Swift 5 was a pleasant surprise when it came to performance. It was able to handle a lot of what we threw at it. In fact, it was, at one point, editing 4K UHD videos with overlays on Adobe Premiere Pro without much problem – albeit, it was definitely a little bit on the slower end. However, unless you’re looking for an editing rig on the go, the Swift 5 handles pretty much everything you’d want it to as a laptop on-the-go from emails to processing large excel sheets.
The Intel Core i7 processor in the Swift 5 we reviewed was pretty capable. It could handle running large excel sheets with complicated equations. It was even able to handle simple photo editing and video rendering on the go. Of course, with size, cooling was a big consideration when dealing with large data sets. However, thanks to the design of the laptop and the many vents, it was able to cool itself pretty well. That said, if it overheats, you’d be stuck waiting for it to cool to a usable temperature. But this didn’t happen during our review.
Working on the go is one thing that is really a compromise between size, comfort and power. The Swift 5 was striding the compromise pretty well with its keyboard. Its design allows you type comfortably for long periods of time even if the laptop is literally on your lap in a train. The keys had enough travel to ensure that you are not fatigued and enough feedback to make sure you know you clicked something. It is a fine line that Acer has stridden commendably with this laptop.
Connectivity on the Swift 5 is also commendable. It supports up to WiFi 6 and while WiFi 6 networks are pretty rare, it was really stable when it was able to connect to it. On regular WiFi a/b/g/n/ac networks the connection was pretty stable and didn’t have random disconnects. Even when I was jumping networks the downtime was barely noticeable.
IRIS Plus Indeed
The IRIS Plus integrated graphics of the Intel Core i7 was definitely a boon to the laptop’s performance. Unlike it’s Intel UHD Graphics brethren, it was able to handle a lot more without struggling. I was able to play games such as Cuphead and even a little bit of LA Noire on the laptop without it dying or the graphics being unbearable.
However, the best demonstration of the IRIS Plus graphics definitely came when I decided to edit a 4K UHD video on the laptop. It was able to handle it surprisingly well. In fact, I was expecting the laptop to overheat when I was editing and more so when I was exporting the video. While it did take a while for overlays and complex transitions to render, it was able to do it nonetheless.
Great Quality Sound even without Dolby certification
The sound experience isn’t something many people would be considering when they look at laptops like this one. However, it was something that needed highlighting when it came to the Swift 5. The laptop was able to produce pretty good sound with its stereo speakers. It was pretty surprising to have warm, full sound coming from the laptop when we’re used to thin and lights without Dolby certification sounding tinny with scratchy highs and hollow lows. While it’s not audiophile quality, Acer did a good job ensuring that the sound is a little better than pleasant to the ears with the Swift 5.
Enough Battery to Run A Marathon
Battery life is quickly becoming a pretty important criteria for any laptop and while, to be honest, it really depends on your usage – it doesn’t make it any less important. On average, the Swift 5 lasted about 8 to 10 hours on a single charge. When we really put the laptop through its paces with the 4K video editing it still lasted about 6 hours. With lower workloads like emails, surfing and word processing, we easily got about 10-12 hours as Acer claimed.
However, the best part of the Swift 5 is the laptop’s support of charging via USB-C. This was one feature I was using quite often with a power bank with USB-C power delivery. If your power bank can charge a Nintendo Switch, you can charge the Swift 5. The laptop will charge with anything above 15W. I was using one with 45W power delivery this could result in the laptop getting a little warm at the USB C port but it did give me about 45 minutes of extra power.
Display
Acer showed some restraint in not kitting the Swift 5 with a 4K UHD screen and to be honest, it’s one of the best decisions they’ve made when it comes to the laptop – aside from kitting it out with a good assortment of ports. The 14-inch, Full HD 1080p IPS display is crisp, sharp and has decent colour reproduction. This made it easy to work with design and colour sensitive workloads when on-the-go.
The fact that it covers over 86% of the laptop’s body is another feat. The slim bezels allow you to focus on the screen. It really makes you feel immersed in what your doing in the screen be it work, a Netflix or even a YouTube Video.
So touchy, So nice
The touch capabilities of the screen are a welcomed addition to the already impressive laptop. While you would think that a touch screen on a laptop that doesn’t have a tablet mode is a bit of waste, it really isn’t. To be very honest, I was in that club until I started using the Swift 5. I found myself relying on the touch screen for things like scrolling and scribing. The touchscreen actually allowed me to be more productive and even made things easier by reducing my reliance on the touchpad.
That said, given the size of the screen I found myself increasing the scaling of Windows to the screen to help with the touch feature. If you’re running on the native 100%, you’ll be clicking and selecting too many icons at one go. For me, it was at 125% that I was most comfortable using the touch screen.
The Perfect, Well Thought Out Package for the Modern Worker
The Swift 5 successfully combines the needs of an on-the-go worker with a well thought out package. Acer’s willingness to meet their customers needs while maintaining a relatively affordable price point makes the laptop very appealing. The fact that it brings together a set of features that makes life easier for their consumers with hardware that is both premium and affordable makes it one of the better options in the market.
When it comes to the bottom line, we have to admit, the Swift 5 is one of the most complete packages when it comes to laptops for people on-the-go. That’s why we’re giving Acer’s Swift 5 the recognition as an Editor’s Choice when it comes to laptops.

While the over all design hearkens back to the Swift 5 of last year, the new refresh comes with a new hinge design which lifts the laptop ever so slightly to increase the airflow. The increased airflow allows the components to be cooled more efficiently as more heat is able to be dissipated. The display on the new Swift is a 14-inch, Full HD IPS panel with a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels. The screen is touch enabled and also comes with options for an antimicrobial coating and Corning Gorilla Glass. The bezels of the Swift 5 are slim which allows the display to cover a whopping 90% of the upper clam of the laptop.
The biggest change with the Swift 5 is the inclusion of Intel’s brand new generation of processors with their new Xe architecture. The new Xe architecture ups the ante when it comes to performance and power efficiency. It has a new 7nm process which allows the processors to draw more performance with less power. Of particular interest, is the increase in graphical performance from the integrated graphics component of the processor. However, if you need even more graphical prowess, the Swift 5 also comes with versions with a discreet NVIDIA GeForce MX350 graphics processor.
The refreshed Swift 5 comes with the same all day battery life that Acer has been touting since last year. However, this year, you’ll be able to get up to 4 hours of use with 30 minutes of charge. The increased power efficiency of the next generation Intel cores also allows it a slightly longer battery life, allowing it to be a trusty companion when it comes to working on the go.
Pricing & Availability
The new Swift 5 will be available starting in October 2020 with prices starting at USD$999 (MYR4,271.30) in North America, EUR 1,099 (MYR5,323.54) in Europe, Middle East and Asia (EMEA); and RMB 6,999 (MYR4,238.50) in China.
Specification will vary according to region. The Swift 5 will be available in Mist Green and Safari Gold.

The new Acer Swift 5 comes with specifications starting with a 10th generation Intel Core i5 paired with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage (PCIe SSD). A step up gets you a discreet graphics card with the NVIDIA MX250; and at the top of the line is a 10th generation Intel Core i7 with the latest Intel IRIS Plus Graphics.
The Acer Swift 5 comes with a 14-inch Full HD 1080p IPS display. The display is also touch enabled and has a 170° viewing angle. The Acer Swift 5 has a sleek silhouette with a thinness of only 14.95mm. It is also Windows Hello enabled with a fingerprint sensor. The hinge of the Swift 5 is highlighted in gold and has a little more than 150° of motion. Acer claims it has 12.5 hours of battery life, enough to last you a full working day.
The laptop comes with 2 regular USB ports, one of which is USB 3.1; 1 USB C port with USB 3.1; a 3.5mm audio jack and an HDMI port. It charges via a proprietary charging port. However, you will also able to charge the laptop through the USB-C port.
