CGTN: World gathers for 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing

BEIJING, Feb. 5, 2022 — The opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games was held at the National Stadium in Beijing on Friday night.

Chinese President Xi Jinping declared the Winter Games open after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach delivered a speech.

"This Year of the Tiger is also an Olympic Year," Bach said. "Both the Year of the Tiger and the Olympic Tiger stand for ambition, courage and strength. Today, thanks to this ambition, China is a winter sport country. Well over 300 million people are engaged in winter sports in about 2,000 ski resorts and ice rinks."

"Dear athletes," he added, "We are all standing with you. We are all supporting you. We are all cheering you on."

Zhang Yimou, who’s behind the epic opening ceremony of the Beijing Summer Olympics in 2008, was again the chief director for the 2022 Winter Games opening ceremony. Snowflakes were at the heart of his central idea for Friday night’s show, which featured them in two programs. The lighting of the Olympic flame also carried the same motif.

"Different snowflakes come to Beijing and assemble into a giant snowflake of humankind," Zhang said of his concept for the opening ceremony in an interview with China Media Group (CMG).

Delegations from over 90 countries and regions attended the ceremony, together with world leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Argentine President Alberto Fernández, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres among others.

As part of the Olympic tradition, members of Team Greece were the first to enter the stadium during the parade of athletes, followed by Team Turkey. As the host of the Winter Olympics, Team China were the last to march. Speed skater Gao Tingyu and skeleton athlete Zhao Dan carried the Chinese national flag for the squad.

At the end of the ceremony, the Olympic Cauldron was lit at the center of the stadium by the torch that had passed through the hands of some 1,200 torchbearers, including Bach himself, during a three-day relay in the three competition zones of Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou.

In the following 16 days, some 2,900 athletes will compete in 109 events of 15 disciplines under seven sports at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

CGTN: Exclusive with Spokesperson of Beijing Winter Olympics Organising Committee Zhao Weidong on Beijing 2022 Winter Games

BEIJING, Jan. 12, 2022 — When Beijing first won the hosting rights for the 2022 Winter Games, the Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) made a promise to turn 300 million Chinese people into winter sports lovers. Zhao Weidong is a spokesperson of Beijing Winter Olympics Organising Committee and also the Director of the Media & Communications Department of Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Zhao did his best to get into the Olympic spirit by learning to ski, a sport unfamiliar to many in China. Zhao’s first foray into skiing was full of falling and frustration, but after a few lessons he gradually got the hang of it. His own experience of mastering skiing sets an example for many more Chinese to take up this activity, no matter the learning curve.

However, the global Covid-19 pandemic presents a hurdle that cannot be overcome with enthusiasm alone. With the pandemic still ongoing, the Beijing Winter Olympics Organising Committee is taking no chances with the safety of the competitors and staff. Beginning with the Tokyo Games last year, the IOC and the host city’s organizing committee have released playbooks to athletes and officials to ensure that all participants and residents remain safe and healthy. The second edition of the Beijing 2022 Playbook was released last month, which covered all COVID-19 countermeasures, including vaccination, customs entry requirements and game-time health monitoring and isolation. Beijing will deploy a closed-loop strategy to ensure that visiting athletes and officials can compete in a comparatively safe zone which is isolated from the general public. This strict strategy will ensure public safety and can serve as a template for future sporting events. Tickets for the upcoming Games will not be sold to overseas spectators or any spectators from high risk areas within China. In response to these restrictions, Beijing Winter Olympics Organising Committee has done trial runs for spectators at test events at the venues. Zhao and the rest of the Organising Committee are adamant that the Games can entertain fans of winter sports.

Counting down to Beijing 2022: Lighting up hope for a shared future

BEIJING, Oct. 29, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics:

The Shougang Park was once a steel plant, but now it is one of the venues for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Just over there, young freestyle skier Gu Ailing will be competing in the big air event in her first Winter Olympics.

"Something I’m dreaming about right now is to be able to compete in each (Alpine skiing) event (at the Beijing Winter Olympics) in China," said America’s two-time Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin. After suffering from the death of her father and serious injuries in 2020, Shiffrin is finding her way back, hoping to rise to the challenge and surpass herself at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Polish ski jumper Kamil Stoch, also an Olympic champion at the Sochi and Pyeongchang Winter Games, said he can’t wait for Beijing 2022, which will be his fifth Games. To this end, the 34-year-old has been training and competing strictly as planned. The British Olympic Association also recently announced their first batch of athletes for the Games. Team GB curler Bruce Mouat said that being able to participate in Beijing 2022 is the best evidence of all the hard work during the past four years.

Just like these athletes, many more are expecting the Beijing Winter Olympics. According to reports, the Australian Olympic Committee will take 41 athletes to Beijing, and Paralympics Australia will take nine athletes and two guides. Countries including the United States, Australia, Britain and Japan have all expressed their high expectations for the Games. Enabling the world’s best athletes to compete at the largest arena and carrying forward the Olympic spirit — these have become a global consensus.

With athletes from all over the world participating in the Games, the host city Beijing has been making all-out efforts to ensure everyone’s safety amid the pandemic. Regarding athletes’ needs for pre-contest training, a bio-secure bubble will be established for the Games. This means that all participants and staff members — from athletes and coaches, to drivers and chefs — will form a closed-loop, or to say, a moving and invisible "bubble" in all Olympic venues from Beijing to Zhangjiakou. Before entering the bio-secure bubble, overseas participants will either be fully vaccinated, or undergo a 21-day quarantine upon arrival in China, so as to prevent possible infections. Meanwhile, those inside the bubble can train and compete normally and receive medical tests, but without making contact with the world outside. In this way, the health of participants would receive maximum guarantee, at the same time, the expectations of athletes and spectators for the Games can be fulfilled as much as possible.

The world has long been under the shadow of the pandemic. As winter falls, the world needs dreams and passion to help ignite hope and light up the way forward. In February, let’s meet at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, "Together for a Shared Future."

China.org.cn: National Games inject new vitality into ancient capital

BEIJING, Aug. 23, 2021 — A news report by China.org.cn on China’s 14th National Games:

China’s 14th National Games are scheduled to be held between Sept. 15 and 27 in Shaanxi province. The National Games are China’s largest multi-sport event at the highest level of athletic competition. Therefore, Xi’an, the main host city of this year’s Games, has been attracting a lot of attention.

Xi’an is one of the 10 oldest cities in the world. Around 1.15 million years ago, Lantian man, a subspecies of Homo erectus, lived in the area, marking one of the earliest stages of human civilization. Historically known as Chang’an, the city served as the imperial capital of 13 dynasties, including the Qin, Han and Tang. For several millennia, Xi’an has created a rich sporting heritage, represented by Chen-style tai chi, Xingyi Six-harmony Broadsword and Fuxing lion dance. Its time-honored history has also added charm to modern sporting events. For example, the Xi’an City Wall International Marathon has been held for more than 20 years on the ancient city wall constructed during the Ming dynasty.

The upcoming 14th National Games will also feature a blend of history and modernity. The Xi’an Olympic Sports Center, the venue for the opening ceremony of the Games, is shaped like a pomegranate flower, which bears witness to the development of the ancient Silk Road. Xi’an was the starting point of the ancient Silk Road. Through this route, the pomegranate was introduced into China and its flower became the official city flower of Xi’an. The pomegranate flower-shaped stadium is equipped with a range of modern technologies. It is the first sports center in China to feature full 5G network coverage, and utilizes VR, AR and other new technologies.

In its preparations for the Games, Xi’an also enhanced its urban infrastructure: Construction of metro lines accelerated; several expressways and interchanges opened to traffic; and Xi’an Railway Station was expanded, more than doubling the number of passengers it can handle annually.

At the same time, Xi’an has been injecting new vitality into its historical and cultural heritage. Heritage parks at the Xiaoyan Pagoda and Duling Mausoleum sites opened to the public; the "Belt and Road" Urban Exhibition Center and Cultural Exchange Center will be completed soon; and many night runs have been held at the city’s landmarks, such as the Daming Palace National Heritage Park. All these demonstrate the unique charm of Xi’an, where history and tradition blend with modernity and fashion.

Despite the impact of COVID-19, Xi’an completed its preparations and will hold the Games as scheduled, sending a cordial invitation to the world with perseverance and practical actions.

Xi’an looks forward to meeting guests this September for the 14th National Games!
