The Xiaomi Mi 10 series was a formidable smartphone device. It showed the world that you do not need to spend a fortune to get a flagship level smartphone that will set your pants on fire. No, the Xiaomi Mi 10 does not really set your pants alight. There is a new one though from Xiaomi and surprise, surprise, they named it the Mi 11. Technically we saw this device before the end of 2020 when Xiaomi launched it in China.
The new Xiaomi Mi 11, like its predecessor is a powerful little beast that packs the most powerful System on a Chip (SoC) that Qualcomm can pack into a modern smartphone. That is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. This is also the first smartphone of 2021 in Malaysia that packs a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC with 5nm build process. Obviously, it is 5G capable too for some futureproofing.
Helping the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC trundle along and handle whatever Android on MIUI 12.5 can throw at the Xiaomi Mi 11 is 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. 256GB may not sound plenty when you put it up against a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra with 512GB options. Though 256GB is a lot even for 4K video recordings.
Of course, you will not have to worry too much if you have some cloud storage to work with. For that, you will want to have fast internet packed into this device. On top of 5G then, the Xiaomi Mi 11 packs a WiFi 6 antenna to take full advantage of WiFi 6 technology for faster and more stable internet.
All of this helps deliver a smooth and snappy Android 11 experience via the large 6.81-inch AMOLED display that pushes MIUI 12.5 in WQHD+ glory at variable refresh rate at up to 120Hz. Of course, the display contains the usual in-display fingerprint technology. It also packs an in-display heart rate sensor, so you do not need your smartwatch to track your heart rate now. With better display also comes better, more natural feeling haptic feedback engine within the device. The brilliant immersive display is not complete without great audio, so Xiaomi got Harman Kardon working on the speakers to make it even better to enjoy movies or music on the device without a headphone.
Of course, a brilliant display also needs a brilliant camera. For that you get the very high-resolution 108-Megapixel camera that you saw on the Xiaomi Mi 10 and the Samsung Galaxy S21. Flanking the 108-Megapixel camera is a 13-Megapixel ultrawide angle camera and a 5-Megapixel macro lens. Telelens? Why do you need a telelens when you can just zoom into the 108-Megapixel camera and still get amazing photos out of it?
Of course, you need a big battery to power all these all day long. For that, you get a 4,600mAh battery packed into the Xiaomi Mi 11 smarpthone. The large battery is capable of being charged from empty to full in just 50 minutes via its USB Type-C port with a 55W charger. The 55W GaN charger will be included with the device in-the-box, which is good news. The battery can be charged wirelessly too at 50W, if you can find the right wireless charger for that kind of speeds. It is also capable of sharing its power wirelessly too at 10W if you need it to.
The Xiaomi Mi 11 will be available soon globally. There are no specific dates just yet, but we think we might see it launched in Malaysia by the end of February 2021 or early March 2021. The Xiaomi Mi 11 will start at EU€ 749 at launch (Approximately MYR 3,662). There are no mentions yet as well on the local Malaysian pricing of the device just yet. Whatever it is, we are excited about the device. Stay tuned for more updates.

Samsung’s flagships have always been something to look forward to. This year is no different. With the Samsung Galaxy S21 series, Samsung is looking to push the boundaries of their flagships while striking the right balance with their experiences. For 2021, they are doing this with more variations in screen and phone size with features that complete the overall experience.
That said, like years past, the Galaxy S21 series is launching with three smartphones: the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+ and the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The latter of the three is Samsung’s technological flagship while the S21 and the S21+ remain their “everyday flagships” which will come with top of the line experiences.
Samsung Galaxy S21 & S21+: Pushing the Boundaries for Everyday Flagships
The Samsung Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ are the “Everyday” flagships of Samsung’s new Galaxy S line up. They come with Samsung’s new Exynos 2100 chipset with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage internationally. In the U.S., they will come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. Powering the smartphone is a 4,000mAh battery in the Galaxy S21 and a 4,500mAh in the Galaxy S21+.
The Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ both come with Samsung’s most intelligent display yet: the Dynamic AMOLED 2X which boasts an impressive 120Hz refresh rate. That’s not where the intelligence ends though. Samsung’s new display adapts to the content that you have on-screen. For the S21 and S21+, this feature, known as dynamic refresh, ranges from 48Hz to 120Hz. It also comes equipped with Eye comfort shield which utilises AI to intelligently adapt the amount of blue light emitted to ensure that your circadian rhythm is unaffected. The S21 will come with a smaller 6.2-inch display while the S21+ has a larger 6.7-inch display. Both come with FHD+ resolutions.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra: Packing the Tech for the Flagship series
The Galaxy S21 Ultra is this year’s big update. It packs the tech for the flagship series and comes with a big update that could indicate the end of the Galaxy Note line up. Of course, like the S21 and the S21+, the Ultra comes with the top of the line Exynos 2100 chipset internationally and the Snapdragon 888 for the U.S. However, it also comes with a whopping 16GB of RAM with 512GB of memory. If that seems a tad too much, it also has a 12GB variant with 256GB of memory.
When it comes to the display, the Galaxy S21 Ultra comes with the largest screen of the bunch – a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X. It comes with the same dynamic refresh feature of its siblings but has a larger refresh range of 4Hz to 128Hz. On paper, the display is a 120Hz display. The screen is also equipped with a Wacom digitizer. Yes, this does mean that it supports the S-pen which comes as an additional add-on. It comes with a case to stowaway the S-Pen.
The Galaxy S21 Ultra comes equipped with a few more tricks than its siblings. It supports Ultrawide Band (UWB) technology which allows it to be used as a digital car key and it also has Android Auto compatibility. It is also one of the few devices which brings the new version of SmartThings which allows you to control your devices from the Android Auto interface. The S21 Ultra is also the only device in the new series to support WiFi 6E. It also has the capability to support Dual Bluetooth. All this is powered by a 5,000mAh battery.
New Features for a Feature-packed Content Experience
Samsung renews its emphasis on content creation with the S21 series. The devices come equipped with a triple camera setup on the S21 and S21+; while the S21 Ultra comes with a flagship quad camera setup. The triple camera setup comes with a 64-megapixel telephoto sensor, a 12-megapixel wide sensor and a 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor. The Ultra’s quad-camera setup comes with a 108-megapixel wide sensor complemented by a 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor and two 10-megapixel telephoto sensor. On the front, the S21 Ultra comes with a 40-megapixel sensor while the S21 and the S21+ both come with 10-megapixel sensor.
The camera experience isn’t only focused on the hardware this year. Samsung has augmented the experience with new software features including an improved Space Zoom feature. The augmented Space Zoom has a new Zoom Lock feature which provides “tripod like stabilization” when using Space Zoom. Similar to last year, the S21 and the S21+ come with up to 30x Space Zoom while the Ultra goes all the way to 100x.
Aside from Space Zoom, the new camera experience comes with an updated Single Take experience. Single Take 2.0 comes with even more options from the single-shot taken. Also, the video recording experience comes with a new Director’s View feature which allows users to preview shots from multiple lenses and shift lenses on the fly for the best shot. Vlogger view allows users to capture footage on the front and back cameras simultaneously. You also have the capability to shoot 8K footage in higher frame rates than before as well as 8K video snap. This allows users to capture frames when recording their videos.

New Aspirations with a new Flagship
The Mi 11 isn’t just a new flagship from Xiaomi, it marks the company’s move to push boundaries and start taking on giant brands like Samsung and Apple. Most obviously, Xiaomi has its software aspirations fixed squarely on Apple. With the announcement of their new flagship, the company also announced a new update to their signature MIUI interface: MIUI 12.5. The updated MIUI interface continues to focus on user experience with new features focused on increasing performance, reducing load times, optimizing app compatibility, and improving security.
Xiaomi’s focus on creating a performance centric flagship doesn’t wane when it comes to the Mi 11. It’s the first commercially available smartphone equipped with Qualcomm’s latest flagship processor the Snapdragon 888. The processor is equipped with 5G connectivity on both mmWave and Sub5 spectra with a new 1+3+4 architecture which promises better performance and battery life. The Mi 11 is also equipped with faster UFS3.1 storage for and faster 4600MHz LPDDR5 RAM. In addition, the new Mi flagship also comes with a 4,600 mAh battery that supports 55W fast charging, 50W wireless fast charging and 10W reverse wireless charging.
The Xiaomi Mi 11 has a 4-curve design with AG coating which the company claims to make it more ergonomic and easier to handle. The flagship has also been given a sleeker design coming in at only 8.06mm thick and weighing only 169g. In addition to this, the Mi 11 comes with a 2K AMOLED display with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and 480Hz touch sampling. The panel comes with E4 OLED technology which allows Xiaomi to fine tune the colour accuracy with a ΔE value of about 0.4. The display employs the latest Gorilla Glass Victus when it comes to shatter- and scratch-proofing.
It’s All in the Details from Camera setup to Content Immersion
The Mi 11 comes with a brand-new triple camera setup which Xiaomi claims brings all the features you need to get great video and pictures. The setup comes with a large 1/1.3” 108-megapixel main sensor paired with a 13-megapixel ultrawide sensor and a 5-megapixel telemacro sensor. While it may seem like Xiaomi has opted to not have optical zoom on the Mi 11, their inclusion of a telemacro lens allows users to get some optical zoom while also enabling the camera to capture the finer details.
MIUI 12.5, which debuts on the Mi 11, focuses on immersion with features that help make the user experience more immersive than ever before. One of these features is a huge improvement to the haptic engine of the Mi 11. The enhancement allows users to experience more discerning features when it is utilized. Xiaomi touted the many different surfaces the engine can emulate during their presentation. In addition, the company has also added touch sensors which detect how the phone is being held to prevent unwanted screen rotations. Xiaomi is also upping the ante when it comes to sound with a partnership with Harman/Kardon. The Mi 11 comes with stereo speakers calibrated by Harman/Kardon for a more immersive sound experience.
